Influence of rare regions on magnetic quantum phase transitions

The effects of quenched disorder on the critical properties of itinerant quantum magnets are considered. Particular attention is paid to locally ordered rare regions that are formed in the presence of quenched disorder even when the bulk system is still in the nonmagnetic phase. It is shown that these local moments or instantons destroy the previously found critical fixed point in the case of antiferromagnets. In the case of itinerant ferromagnets, the critical behavior is unaffected by the rare regions due to an effective long-range interaction between the order parameter fluctuations.

Universal Scaling of the Chiral Condensate in Finite-Volume Gauge Theories

We confront exact analytical predictions for the finite-volume scaling of the chiral condensate with data from quenched lattice gauge theory simulations. Using staggered fermions in both the fundamental and adjoint representations, and gauge groups SU(2) and SU(3), we are able to test simultaneously all of the three chiral universality classes. With overlap fermions we also test the predictions for gauge field sectors of non-zero topological charge. Excellent agreement is found in most cases, and the deviations are understood in the others.

Quantum critical behavior of clean itinerant ferromagnets

We consider the quantum ferromagnetic transition at zero temperature in clean itinerant electron systems. We find that the Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson order parameter field theory breaks down since the electron-electron interaction leads to singular coupling constants in the Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson functional. These couplings generate an effective long-range interaction between the spin or order parameter fluctuations of the form 1/r^{2d-1}, with d the spatial dimension. This leads to unusual scaling behavior at the quantum critical point in 1 < d\leq 3, which we determine exactly. We also discuss the quantum-to-classical crossover at small but finite temperatures, which is characterized by the appearance of multiple temperature scales. A comparison with recent results on disordered itinerant ferromagnets is given.

Breakdown of Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson theory for certain quantum phase transitions

The quantum ferromagnetic transition of itinerant electrons is considered. It is shown that the Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson theory described by Hertz and others breaks down due to a singular coupling between fluctuations of the conserved order parameter. This coupling induces an effective long-range interaction between the spins of the form 1/r^{2d-1}. It leads to unusual scaling behavior at the quantum critical point in $1<d\leq 3$ dimensions, which is determined exactly.

Finite size corrections in two dimensional gauge theories and a quantitative chiral test of the overlap

An argument is presented for a certain universality of finite size corrections in two dimensional gauge theories. In the abelian case a direct calculation is carried out for a particular chiral model. The analytical result confirms the above universality and that the 't Hooft vertex previously measured using the overlap smoothly approaches the correct continuum limit within statistical errors.

Massless Composite Fermions in Two Dimensions and the Overlap

There exist chiral gauge models in two dimensions that have massless composite fermions. Two examples are presented and it is suggested that they be accepted as benchmark test-cases for generic proposals of non-perturbatively regulating chiral gauge theories in any dimension. We apply the overlap to the simpler of the two benchmarks and present the results of a numerical simulation of modest size.

Some Applications of the Overlap Formalism

The massless vector Schwinger model with $N_f=1,2,3,4$ number of flavors is studied on the lattice using the overlap formalism. A full Monte Carlo simulation yields values for the bilinear fermion condensate that are in agreement with the exact solution of the continuum Schwinger model with an added Thirring interaction.

Chiral determinant on the lattice -- Anomalies and Instantons

An expression for the lattice effective action induced by chiral fermions in any even dimensions in terms of an overlap of two states is shown to have promising properties in two and four dimensions: The correct abelian anomaly is reproduced and gauge field configurations with non-zero topological charge are completely suppressed.
