Spin-orbit interactions mediated negative differential resistance in a quasi-two-dimensional electron gas with finite thickness

Effects of the spin-orbit interactions on the energy spectrum, Fermi surface and spin dynamics are studied in structural- and bulk-inversion asymmetric quasi-two-dimensional structures with a finite thickness in the presence of a parabolic transverse confining potential. One-particle quantum mechanical problem in the presence of an in-plane magnetic field is solved numerically exact. Interplay of the spin-orbit interactions, orbital- and Zeeman-effects of the in-plane magnetic field yields a multi-valley subband structure, typical for realization of the Gunn effect. A possible Gunn-effect-mediated spin accumulation is discussed.

Disorder-driven superconductor-normal metal phase transition in quasi-one-dimensional organic conductors

Effects of non-magnetic disorder on the critical temperature T_c and on diamagnetism of quasi-one-dimensional superconductors are reported. The energy of Josephson-coupling between wires is considered to be random, which is typical for dirty organic superconductors. We show that this randomness destroys phase coherence between wires and that T_c vanishes discontinuously at a critical disorder-strength. The parallel and transverse components of the penetration-depth are evaluated. They diverge at different critical temperatures T_c^{(1)} and T_c, which correspond to pair-breaking and phase-coherence breaking respectively. The interplay between disorder and quantum phase fluctuations is shown to result in quantum critical behavior at T=0, which manifests itself as a superconducting-normal metal phase transition of first-order at a critical disorder strength.

Critical disorder effects in Josephson-coupled quasi-one-dimensional superconductors

Effects of non-magnetic randomness on the critical temperature T_c and diamagnetism are studied in a class of quasi-one dimensional superconductors. The energy of Josephson-coupling between wires is considered to be random, which is typical for dirty organic superconductors. We show that this randomness destroys phase coherence between the wires and T_c vanishes discontinuously when the randomness reaches a critical value. The parallel and transverse components of the penetration depth are found to diverge at different critical temperatures T_c^{(1)} and T_c, which correspond to pair-breaking and phase-coherence breaking. The interplay between disorder and quantum phase fluctuations results in quantum critical behavior at T=0, manifesting itself as a superconducting-normal metal phase transition of first-order at a critical disorder strength.

Construction and purpose of effective field theories for frustrated magnetic order

This article reviews recent years' progress in the low temperature analysis of standard models of spin glass order such as the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick (SK) model. Applications to CdTe/CdMnTe layered systems and explanation of glassy antiferromagnetic order at lowest temperatures stimulated us to study in detail the beautifully complex physical effects of replica symmetry breaking (RSB).We discuss analytical ideas based on highly precise numerical data which lead to the construction of relatively simple effective field theories for the SK model and help to understand the mysterious features of its exact solution. The goal is to find construction principles for the theory of interplay between frustrated magnetic order and various relevant physical degrees of freedom. The emphasis in this article is on the role of Parisi's RSB, which surprisingly creates critical phenomena in the low temperature limit despite the absence of a standard phase transition.

Bound hole states in a ferromagnetic (Ga,Mn)As environment

A numerical technique is developed to solve the Luttinger-Kohn equation for impurity states directly in k-space and is applied to calculate bound hole wave functions in a ferromagnetic (Ga,Mn)As host. The rich properties of the band structure of an arbitrarily strained, ferromagnetic zinc-blende semiconductor yields various features which have direct impact on the detailed shape of a valence band hole bound to an active impurity. The role of strain is discussed on the basis of explicit calculations of bound hole states.

Scaling and Renormalization Group in Replica Symmetry Breaking space: Evidence for a simple analytical solution of the SK model at zero temperature

Using numerical self-consistent solutions of a sequence of finite replica symmetry breakings (RSB) and Wilson's renormalization group but with the number of RSB-steps playing a role of decimation scales, we report evidence for a non-trivial T->0-limit of the Parisi order function q(x) for the SK spin glass. Supported by scaling in RSB-space, the fixed point order function is conjectured to be q*(a)=sqrt{π/2} a/ξerf(ξ/a) on 0\leq a\leq infty where x/T->a at T=0 and ξ\approx 1.13\pm 0.01. ξplays the role of a correlation length in a-space. q*(a) may be viewed as the solution of an effective 1D field theory.

Dynamical solutions of a quantum Heisenberg spin glass model

We consider quantum-dynamical phenomena in the $\mathrm{SU}(2)$, $S=1/2$ infinite-range quantum Heisenberg spin glass. For a fermionic generalization of the model we formulate generic dynamical self-consistency equations. Using the Popov-Fedotov trick to eliminate contributions of the non-magnetic fermionic states we study in particular the isotropic model variant on the spin space. Two complementary approximation schemes are applied: one restricts the quantum spin dynamics to a manageable number of Matsubara frequencies while the other employs an expansion in terms of the dynamical local spin susceptibility. We accurately determine the critical temperature $T_c$ of the spin glass to paramagnet transition. We find that the dynamical correlations cause an increase of $T_c$ by 2% compared to the result obtained in the spin-static approximation. The specific heat $C(T)$ exhibits a pronounced cusp at $T_c$. Contradictory to other reports we do not observe a maximum in the $C(T)$-curve above $T_c$.

Dynamical CPA approach to an itinerant fermionic spin glass model

We study a fermionic version of the Sherrington-Kirkpatrick model including nearest-neighbor hopping on a $\infty$-dimensional simple cubic lattices. The problem is reduced to one of free fermions moving in a dynamical effective random medium. By means of a CPA method we derive a set of self-consistency equations for the spin glass order parameter and for the Fourier components of the local spin susceptibility. In order to solve these equations numerically we employ an approximation scheme which restricts the dynamics to a feasible number of the leading Fourier components. From a sequence of systematically improved dynamical approximations we estimate the location of the quantum critical point.

Modulated replica symmetry breaking schemes for antiferromagnetic spin glasses

We define modulated replica symmetry breaking (RSB)-schemes which combine tree- and wave-like structures. A modulated scheme and unmodulated RSB are applied at 1-step level to a semiconductor model with antiferromagnetic Korenblit-Shender interaction. By comparison of the free energies we find evidence that a T=0 phase transition in the ferrimagnetic phase leads to a transition between the different RSB-schemes. An embedding factor of Parisi block matrices with sublattice-asymmetrical size is employed as a new variational parameter in the modulated scheme.

Fermionic SK-models with Hubbard interaction: Magnetism and electronic structure

Models with range-free frustrated Ising spin- and Hubbard interaction are treated exactly by means of the discrete time slicing method. Critical and tricritical points, correlations, and the fermion propagator, are derived as a function of temperature T, chemical potential μ, Hubbard coupling U, and spin glass energy J. The phase diagram is obtained. Replica symmetry breaking (RSB)-effects are evaluated up to four-step order (4RSB). The use of exact relations together with the 4RSB-solutions allow to model exact solutions by interpolation. For T=0, our numerical results provide strong evidence that the exact density of states in the spin glass pseudogap regime obeys ρ(E)=const |E-E_F| for energies close to the Fermi level. Rapid convergence of ρ'(E_F) under increasing order of RSB is observed. The leading term resembles the Efros-Shklovskii Coulomb pseudogap of localized disordered fermionic systems in 2D. Beyond half filling we obtain a quadratic dependence of the fermion filling factor on the chemical potential. We find a half filling transition between a phase for U>μ, where the Fermi level lies inside the Hubbard gap, into a phase where μ(>U) is located at the center of the upper spin glass pseudogap (SG-gap). For μ>U the Hubbard gap combines with the lower one of two SG-gaps (phase I), while for μ<U it joins the sole SG-gap of the half-filling regime (phase II). We predict scaling behaviour at the continuous half filling transition. Implications of the half-filling transition between the deeper insulating phase II and phase I for delocalization due to hopping processes in itinerant model extensions are discussed and metal-insulator transition scenarios described.

Semi-fermionic representation of SU(N) Hamiltonians

We represent the generators of the SU(N) algebra as bilinear combinations of Fermi operators with imaginary chemical potential. The distribution function, consisting of a minimal set of discrete imaginary chemical potentials, is found for arbitrary N. This representation leads to the conventional temperature diagram technique with standard Feynman codex, except that the Matsubara frequencies are determined by neither integer nor half-integer numbers. The real-time Schwinger-Keldysh formalism is formulated in the framework of complex distribution functions. We discuss the continuous large N and SU(2) large spin limits. We illustrate the application of this technique for magnetic and spin-liquid states of the Heisenberg model.

Ginzburg-Landau functional for nearly antiferromagnetic perfect and disordered Kondo lattices

Interplay between Kondo effect and trends to antiferromagnetic and spin glass ordering in perfect and disordered bipartite Kondo lattices is considered. Ginzburg-Landau equation is derived from the microscopic effective action written in three mode representation (Kondo screening, antiferromagnetic correlations and spin liquid correlations). The problem of local constraint is resolved by means of Popov-Fedotov representation for localized spin operators. It is shown that the Kondo screening enhances the trend to a spin liquid crossover and suppresses antiferromagnetic ordering in perfect Kondo lattices and spin glass ordering in doped Kondo lattices. The modified Doniach's diagram is constructed, and possibilities of going beyond the mean field approximation are discussed.

Schwinger-Keldysh semionic approach for quantum spin systems

We derive a path-integral Schwinger-Keldysh approach for quantum spin systems. This is achieved by means of a semionic representation of spins as fermions with imaginary chemical potential. The major simplifying feature in comparison with other representations (Holstein-Primakoff, Dyson-Maleev, slave bosons/fermions etc) is that the local constraint is taken into account exactly. As a result, the standard diagram technique with usual Feynman codex is constructed. We illustrate the application of this technique for the Néel and spin-liquid states of the AFM Heisenberg model.

Effect of Substitutional Impurities on the Electronic States and Conductivity of Crystals with Half-filled Band

Low temperature quantum corrections to the density of states (DOS) and the conductivity are examined for a two-dimensional(2D) square crystal with substitutional impurities. By summing the leading logarithmic corrections to the DOS its energy dependence near half-filling is obtained. It is shown that substitutional impurities do not suppress the van Hove singularity at the middle of the band, however they change its energy dependence strongly. Weak disorder due to substitutional impurities in the three-dimensional simple cubic lattice results in a shallow dip in the center of the band. The calculation of quantum corrections to the conductivity of a 2D lattice shows that the well-known logarithmic localization correction exists for all band fillings. Furthermore the magnitude of the correction increases as half-filling is approached. The evaluation of the obtained analytical results shows evidence for delocalized states in the center of the band of a 2D lattice with substitutional impurities.

Density of States of Disordered Two-Dimensional Crystals with Half-Filled Band

A diagrammatic method is applied to study the effects of commensurability in two-dimensional disordered crystalline metals by using the particle-hole symmetry with respect to the nesting vector P_0={\pmπ/a, π/a} for a half-filled electronic band. The density of electronic states (DoS) is shown to have nontrivial quantum corrections due to both nesting and elastic impurity scattering processes, as a result the van Hove singularity is preserved in the center of the band. However, the energy dependence of the DoS is strongly changed. A small offset from the middle of the band gives rise to disappearence of quantum corrections to the DoS .

Distribution function of the local density of states of a one-channel weakly disordered ring in an external magnetic field

A real space diagrammatic method, which is an extension of the Berezinskii technique to problems with periodic boundary condition, is formulated to study the density of states (DOS) ρ(ε,ϕ) and its moments for a one-channel weakly disordered ring threaded by an external magnetic flux ϕ. The exact result obtained for the average value of the DOS shows that ρ(ε,ϕ) oscillates with a period of the flux quantum ϕ_0=hc/e. However all higher moments of the DOS oscillate with the halved period ϕ_0/2. The exact expression for the DOS is valid for both weak localization (L >> l, where L is the rings circumference and l is the mean free path) and ballistic (L < l) regimes. In the weak localization regime the distribution function of the DOS is calculated, which turns out to be of logarithmic normal form.

Spin - glass transition in Kondo lattice with quenched disorder

We use the Popov-Fedotov representation of spin operators to construct an effective action for a Kondo lattice model with quenched disorder at finite temperatures. We study the competition between the Kondo effect and frozen spin order in Ising-like spin glass. We present the derivation of new mean-field equations for the spin-glass order parameter and analyze the effects of screening of localized spins by conduction electrons on the spin-glass phase transition.

Selforganized 3-band structure of the doped fermionic Ising spin glass

The fermionic Ising spin glass is analyzed for arbitrary filling and for all temperatures. A selforganized 3-band structure of the model is obtained in the magnetically ordered phase. Deviation from half filling generates a central nonmagnetic band, which becomes sharply separated at T=0 by (pseudo)gaps from upper and lower magnetic bands. Replica symmetry breaking effects are derived for several observables and correlations. They determine the shape of the 3-band DoS, and, for given chemical potential, influence the fermion filling strongly in the low temperature regime.
