Maps, sheaves, and K3 surfaces

The conjectural equivalence of curve counting on Calabi-Yau 3-folds via stable maps and stable pairs is discussed. By considering Calabi-Yau 3-folds with K3 fibrations, the correspondence naturally connects curve and sheaf counting on K3 surfaces. New results and conjectures (with D. Maulik) about descendent integration on K3 surfaces are announced. The recent proof of the Yau-Zaslow conjecture is surveyed. The paper accompanies my lecture at the Clay research conference in Cambridge, MA in May 2008.

The 3-fold vertex via stable pairs

The theory of stable pairs in the derived category yields an enumerative geometry of curves in 3-folds. We evaluate the equivariant vertex for stable pairs on toric 3-folds in terms of weighted box counting. In the toric Calabi-Yau case, the result simplifies to a new form of pure box counting. The conjectural equivalence with the DT vertex predicts remarkable identities. The equivariant vertex governs primary insertions in the theory of stable pairs for toric varieties. We consider also the descendent vertex and conjecture the complete rationality of the descendent theory for stable pairs.

Abelian Hurwitz-Hodge integrals

Hodge classes on the moduli space of admissible covers with monodromy group G are associated to irreducible representations of G. We evaluate all linear Hodge integrals over moduli spaces of admissible covers with abelian monodromy in terms of multiplication in an associated wreath group algebra. In case G is cyclic and the representation is faithful, the evaluation is in terms of double Hurwitz numbers. In case G is trivial, the formula specializes to the well-known result of Ekedahl-Lando-Shapiro-Vainshtein for linear Hodge integrals over the moduli space of curves in terms of single Hurwitz numbers.

Quantum cohomology of the Hilbert scheme of points in the plane

We determine the ring structure of the equivariant quantum cohomology of the Hilbert scheme of points in the complex plane. The operator of quantum multiplication by the divisor class is a nonstationary deformation of the quantum Calogero-Sutherland many-body system. A relationship between the quantum cohomology of the Hilbert scheme and the Gromov-Witten/Donaldson-Thomas correspondence for local curves is proven.

Enumerative Geometry of Calabi-Yau 5-Folds

Gromov-Witten theory is used to define an enumerative geometry of curves in Calabi-Yau 5-folds. We find recursions for meeting numbers of genus 0 curves, and we determine the contributions of moving multiple covers of genus 0 curves to the genus 1 Gromov-Witten invariants. The resulting invariants, conjectured to be integral, are analogous to the previously defined BPS counts for Calabi-Yau 3 and 4-folds. We comment on the situation in higher dimensions where new issues arise. Two main examples are considered: the local Calabi-Yau P^2 with balanced normal bundle 3O(-1) and the compact Calabi-Yau hypersurface X_7 in P^6. In the former case, a closed form for our integer invariants has been conjectured by G. Martin. In the latter case, we recover in low degrees the classical enumeration of elliptic curves by Ellingsrud and Stromme.

Disk enumeration on the quintic 3-fold

Holomorphic disk invariants with boundary in the real Lagrangian of a quintic 3-fold are calculated by localization and proven mirror transforms. A careful discussion of the underlying virtual intersection theory is included. The generating function for the disk invariants is shown to satisfy an extension of the Picard-Fuchs differential equations associated to the mirror quintic. The Ooguri-Vafa multiple cover formula is used to define virtually enumerative disk invariants. The results may also be viewed as providing a virtual enumeration of real rational curves on the quintic.

Enumerative geometry of Calabi-Yau 4-folds

Gromov-Witten theory is used to define an enumerative geometry of curves in Calabi-Yau 4-folds. The main technique is to find exact solutions to moving multiple cover integrals. The resulting invariants are analogous to the BPS counts of Gopakumar and Vafa for Calabi-Yau 3-folds. We conjecture the 4-fold invariants to be integers and expect a sheaf theoretic explanation. Several local Calabi-Yau 4-folds are solved exactly. Compact cases, including the sextic Calabi-Yau in CP5, are also studied. A complete solution of the Gromov-Witten theory of the sextic is conjecturally obtained by the holomorphic anomaly equation.

Algebraic cobordism revisited

We define a cobordism theory in algebraic geometry based on normal crossing degenerations with double point singularities. The main result is the equivalence of double point cobordism to the theory of algebraic cobordism previously defined by Levine and Morel. Double point cobordism provides a simple, geometric presentation of algebraic cobordism theory. As a corollary, the Lazard ring given by products of projective spaces rationally generates all nonsingular projective varieties modulo double point degenerations. Double point degenerations arise naturally in relative Donaldson-Thomas theory. We use double point cobordism to prove all the degree 0 conjectures in Donaldson-Thomas theory: absolute, relative, and equivariant.

New calculations in Gromov-Witten theory

We use a topological framework to study descendent Gromov-Witten theory in higher genus, non-toric settings. Two geometries are considered: surfaces of general type and the Enriques Calabi-Yau threefold. We conjecture closed formulas for surfaces of general type in classes K and 2K. For the Enriques Calabi-Yau, Gromov-Witten invariants are calculated in genus 0, 1, and 2. In genus 2, the holomorphic anomaly equation is found.

The local Donaldson-Thomas theory of curves

The local Donaldson-Thomas theory of curves is solved by localization and degeneration methods. The results complete a triangle of equivalences relating Gromov-Witten theory, Donaldson-Thomas theory, and the quantum cohomology of the Hilbert scheme of points of the plane. The quantum differential equation of the Hilbert scheme of points of the plane has a natural interpretation in the local Donaldson-Thomas theory of curves. The solution determines the 1-legged equivariant vertex.

A topological view of Gromov-Witten theory

We study relative Gromov-Witten theory via universal relations provided by the interaction of degeneration and localization. We find relative Gromov-Witten theory is completely determined by absolute Gromov-Witten theory. The relationship between the relative and absolute theories is guided by a strong analogy to classical topology. As an outcome, we present a mathematical determination of the Gromov-Witten invariants (in all genera) of the Calabi-Yau quintic 3-fold in terms of known theories.

Gromov-Witten theory and Donaldson-Thomas theory, II

We discuss the GW/DT correspondence for 3-folds in both the absolute and relative cases. Descendents in Gromov-Witten theory are conjectured to be equivalent to Chern characters of the universal sheaf in Donaldson-Thomas theory. Relative constraints in Gromov-Witten theory are conjectured to correspond in Donaldson-Thomas theory to cohomology classes of the Hilbert scheme of points of the relative divisor. Independent of the conjectural framework, we prove degree 0 formulas for the absolute and relative Donaldson-Thomas theories of toric varieties.

Gromov-Witten theory and Donaldson-Thomas theory, I

We conjecture an equivalence between the Gromov-Witten theory of 3-folds and the holomorphic Chern-Simons theory of Donaldson-Thomas. For Calabi-Yau 3-folds, the equivalence is defined by the change of variables, exp(iu)=-q, where u is the genus parameter of GW theory and q is charge parameter of DT theory. The conjecture is proven for local Calabi-Yau toric surfaces.

Hodge integrals, partition matrices, and the lambda_g conjecture

We prove a closed formula for integrals of the cotangent line classes against the top Chern class of the Hodge bundle on the moduli space of stable pointed curves. These integrals are computed via relations obtained from virtual localization in Gromov-Witten theory. An analysis of several natural matrices indexed by partitions is required.

Convex rationally connected varieties

Nonsingular projective varieties which are both convex and rationally connected are considered. We ask whether such varieties must be algebraic homogeneous spaces G/P. In case X is a complete intersection, an affirmative answer is obtained by an elementary argument.

Relative maps and tautological classes

The moduli space of stable relative maps to the projective line combines features of stable maps and admissible covers. We prove all standard Gromov-Witten classes on these moduli spaces of stable relative maps have tautological push-forwards to the moduli space of curves. In particular, the fundamental classes of all moduli spaces of admissible covers push-forward to tautological classes. Consequences for the tautological rings of the moduli spaces of curves include methods for generating new relations, uniform derivations of the socle and vanishing statements of the Gorenstein conjectures for the complete, compact type, and rational tail cases, tautological boundary terms for Ionel's, Looijenga's, and Getzler's vanishings, and applications to Gromov-Witten theory.
