Three questions in Gromov-Witten theory

This article accompanies my ICM talk in August 2002. Three conjectural directions in Gromov-Witten theory are discussed: Gorenstein properties, BPS states, and Virasoro constraints. Each points to basic structures in the subject which are not yet understood.

A reconstruction theorem in quantum cohomology and quantum K-theory

A reconstruction theorem for genus 0 gravitational quantum cohomology and quantum K-theory is proved. A new linear equivalence in the Picard group of the moduli space of genus 0 stable maps relating the pull-backs of line bundles from the target via different markings is used for the reconstruction result. Examples of calculations in quantum cohomology and quantum K-theory are given.

The connectedness of the moduli space of maps to homogeneous spaces

We prove the connectedness of the moduli space of maps (of fixed genus and homology class) to the homogeneous space G/P by degeneration via the maximal torus action. In the genus 0 case, the irreducibility of the moduli of maps is a direct consequence of connectedness. An analysis of a related Bialynicki-Birula stratification of the map space yields a rationality result: the (coarse) moduli space of genus 0 maps to G/P is a rational variety. The rationality argument depends essentially upon rationality results for quotients of SL2 representations proven by Katsylo and Bogomolov.

Logarithmic series and Hodge integrals in the tautological ring (with an appendix by D. Zagier)

We describe a new perspective on the intersection theory of the moduli space of curves involving both Virasoro constraints and Gorenstein conditions. The main result of the paper is the computation of a basic 1-point Hodge integral series occurring in the tautological ring of the moduli space of nonsingular curves. In the appendix by D. Zagier, "Polynomials arising from the tautological ring", a detailed study is made of certain polynomials whose coefficients are intersection numbers on moduli space. The paper and the appendix together provide proofs of all previously conjectured formulas for 1-point integrals in the tautological ring, and of natural extensions of these formulas as well.

The Toda equations and the Gromov-Witten theory of the Riemann sphere

Consequences of the Toda equations arising from the conjectural matrix model for the Riemann sphere are investigated. The Toda equations determine the Gromov-Witten descendent potential (including all genera) of the Riemann sphere from the degree 0 part. Degree 0 series computations via Hodge integrals then lead to higher degree predictions by the Toda equations. First, closed series forms for all 1-point invariants of all genera and degrees are given. Second, degree 1 invariants are investigated with new applications to Hodge integrals. Third, a differential equation for the generating function of the classical simple Hurwitz numbers (in all genera and degrees) is found -- the first such equation. All these results depend upon the conjectural Toda equations. Finally, proofs of the Toda equations in genus 0 and 1 are given.

Stable maps and branch divisors

We construct a natural branch divisor for equidimensional projective morphisms where the domain has lci singularities and the target is nonsingular. The method involves generalizing a divisor contruction of Mumford from sheaves to complexes. The construction is valid in flat families. The generalized branch divisor of a stable map to a nonsingular curve X yields a canonical morphism from the space of stable maps to a symmetric product of X. This branch morphism (together with virtual localization) is used to compute the Hurwitz numbers of covers of P^1 for all genera and degrees in terms of Hodge integrals.

Hodge integrals and degenerate contributions

Degenerate contributions to higher genus Gromov-Witten invariants of Calabi-Yau 3-folds are computed via Hodge integrals. The vanishing of contributions of covers of elliptic curves conjectured by Gopakumar and Vafa is proven. A formula for degree 1 covers for all genus pairs is computed in agreement with M-theoretic calculations of Gopakumar and Vafa. Finally, these results lead to a proof of a formula in the tautological ring of the moduli space of curves previously conjectured by Faber.

Hodge integrals and Gromov-Witten theory

Integrals of the Chern classes of the Hodge bundle in Gromov-Witten theory are studied. We find a universal system of differential equations which determines the generating function of these integrals from the standard descendent potential (for any target X). We use virtual localization and classical degeneracy calculations to find trigonometric closed form solutions for special Hodge integrals over the moduli space of pointed curves. These formulas are applied to two computations in Gromov-Witten theory for Calabi-Yau 3-folds. The genus g, degree d multiple cover contribution of a rational curve is found to be simply proportional to the Euler characteristic of M_g. The genus g, degree 0 Gromov-Witten invariant is calculated (in agreement with recent string theoretic calculations of Gopakumar-Vafa and Marino-Moore). Finally, with Zagier's help, our Hodge integral formulas imply a general genus prediction of the punctual Virasoro constraints applied to the projective line.

Virasoro constraints and the Chern classes of the Hodge bundle

We analyse the consequences of the Virasoro conjecture of Eguchi, Hori and Xiong for Gromov-Witten invariants, in the case of zero degree maps to the manifolds CP^1 and CP^2 (or more generally, smooth projective curves and smooth simply-connected projective surfaces). We obtain predictions involving intersections of psi and lambda classes on the compactification of M_{g,n}. In particular, we show that the Virasoro conjecture for CP^2 implies the numerical part of Faber's conjecture on the tautological Chow ring of M_g.

Localization of virtual classes

We prove a localization formula for virtual fundamental classes in the context of torus equivariant perfect obstruction theories. As an application, the higher genus Gromov-Witten invariants of projective space are expressed as graph sums of tautological integrals over moduli spaces of stable pointed curves (generalizing Kontsevich's genus 0 formulas). Also, excess integrals over spaces of higher genus multiple covers are computed.

The Chow Ring of the Hilbert Scheme of Rational Normal Curves

Let H(d) be the (open) Hilbert scheme of rational normal curves of degree d in P^d. A presentation of the integral Chow ring of H(d) is given via equivariant Chow ring computations. Included also in the paper are algebraic computations of the integral equivariant Chow rings of the algebraic groups O(n), SO(2k+1). The results for S0(3)=PGL(2) are needed for the Hilbert scheme calculation.

The Symmetric Function h^0(\bar{M}_{0,n}, L_1^{x_1} \tensor...\tensor L_n^{x_n})

Let \bar{M}_{0,n} be the moduli space of pointed, genus 0 curves. Let L_i denote the line bundle on \bar{M}_{0,n} associated to the i-th marked point (the fiber of L_i is the cotangent space of the pointed curve at the i-th point). Y_n=h^0(\bar{M}_{0,n}, L_1^{x_1} \tensor... \tensor L_n^{x_n}) is a symmetric function of the variables x_1,... x_n. Let R be the ring of symmetric functions in infinitely many variables. An explicit linear transformation T: R-> R is found such that Y_n= T^{n-3} (1).

The Chow Ring of the Non-Linear Grassmannian

Let M_{P^k}(P^r, d) be the moduli space of unparameterized maps μ:P^k -> P^r satisfying μ^*(O(1))= O(d). M_{P^k}(P^r,d) is a quasi-projective variety, and, in case k=1, M_{P^1}(P^r,d) is the fundamental open cell of Kontsevich's space of stable maps \bar{M}_{0,0}(P^r,d). It is shown that the Q-coefficient Chow ring of M_{P^k}(P^r,d) is canonically isomorphic to the Chow ring of the Grassmannian Gr(P^k, P^r)= M_{P^k}(P^r,1).

A Note On Elliptic Plane Curves With Fixed j-Invariant

Let N_d be the number of degree d, nodal, rational plane curves through 3d-1 points in the complex projective plane. The number of degree d>=3, nodal, elliptic plane curves with a fixed (general) j-invariant through 3d-1 points is found to be {d-1 \choose 2}*N_d.
