Saturation and forward jets at HERA

We analyse forward-jet production at HERA in the framework of the Golec-Biernat and Wusthoff saturation models. We obtain a good description of the forward jet cross sections measured by the H1 and ZEUS collaborations in the two-hard-scale region kT ~ Q >> Lambda_QCD with two different parametrisations with either significant or weak saturation effects. The weak saturation parametrization gives a scale compatible with the one found for the proton structure function F_2. We argue that Mueller-Navelet jets at the Tevatron and the LHC could help distinguishing between both options.

Sensitivity to the Standard Model Higgs Boson in Exclusive Double Diffraction

We use a Monte Carlo implementation of recently developed models of double diffraction to assess the sensitivity of the LHC experiments to Standard Model Higgs bosons produced in exclusive double diffraction. The signal is difficult to extract, due to experimental limitations related to the first level trigger, and to contamination by inclusive double diffractive background. Assuming the above difficulties can be overcome, the expected signal-to-background ratio is presented as a function of the experimental resolution on the missing mass. Injecting a missing mass resolution of 2 GeV, a signal-to-background ratio of about 0.5 is obtained; a resolution of 1 GeV brings a signal to background ratio of 1. This result is lower than previous estimates, and the discrepancy is explained.

Saturation and Traveling waves

High parton density effects with energy obey non-linear QCD evolution equations for which exact solutions are not known. The mathematical class to which the non-linear Balitsky-Kovchegov equation belongs is identified, proving the existence of asymptotic in energy traveling wave solutions which are ``universal'' i.e. independent of the initial conditions and of the precise form of the non-linearities. This has an direct impact on geometrical scaling and the diffusive transition to saturation, which is shown to be ``normal'' for constant QCD coupling and ``abnormal'' for running coupling.

QCD Saturation Equations including Dipole-Dipole Correlation

We derive two coupled non-linear evolution equations corresponding to the truncation of the Balitsky infinite hierarchy of saturation equations after inclusion of dipole-dipole correlations, i.e. one step beyond the Balitsky-Kovchegov (BK) equation. We exhibit an exact solution for maximal correlation which still satisfies the same asymptotic geometric scaling as BK but with the S-matrix going to 1/2 (instead of 0) in the full saturation region.

Saturation at Hadron Colliders

We extend the saturation models a la Golec-Biernat and Wusthoff to cross-sections of hard processes initiated by virtual-gluon probes separated by large rapidity intervals at hadron colliders. We derive their analytic expressions and apply them to physical examples, such as saturation effects for Mueller-Navelet forward jets. By comparison to gamma*-gamma* cross-sections we find a more abrupt transition to saturation. We propose to study observables with a potentially clear saturation signal and to use heavy vector and flavored mesons as alternative hard probes to forward jets.

Universality and tree structure of high energy QCD

Using non-trivial mathematical properties of a class of nonlinear evolution equations, we obtain the universal terms in the asymptotic expansion in rapidity of the saturation scale and of the unintegrated gluon density from the Balitsky-Kovchegov equation. These terms are independent of the initial conditions and of the details of the equation. The last subasymptotic terms are new results and complete the list of all possible universal contributions. Universality is interpreted in a general qualitative picture of high energy scattering, in which a scattering process corresponds to a tree structure probed by a given source.

Popping out the Higgs boson off vacuum at Tevatron and LHC

In the prospect of diffractive Higgs production at the LHC collider, we give an extensive study of Higgs boson, dijet, diphoton and dilepton production at hadronic colliders via diffraction at both hadron vertices. Our model, based on non factorizable Pomeron exchange, describes well the observed dijet rate observed at Tevatron Run I. Taking the absolute normalization from data, our predictions are given for diffractive processes at Tevatron and LHC. Stringent tests of our model and of its parameters using data being taken now at Tevatron Run II are suggested. These measurements will also allow to discriminate between various models and finally to give precise predictions on diffractive Higgs boson production cross-section at the LHC.

Traveling wave fronts and the transition to saturation

We propose a general method to study the solutions to nonlinear QCD evolution equations, based on a deep analogy with the physics of traveling waves. In particular, we show that the transition to the saturation regime of high energy QCD is identical to the formation of the front of a traveling wave. Within this physical picture, we provide the expressions for the saturation scale and the gluon density profile as a function of the total rapidity and the transverse momentum. The application to the Balitsky-Kovchegov equation for both fixed and running coupling constants confirms the effectiveness of this method.

Dijets with 2,1 or 0 rapidity gap: Factorization breaking at the Tevatron

Central production cross-sections of hard dijets with 2,1 or 0 rapidity gap at Tevatron are analyzed in terms of diffractive (``a la Good-Walker'') and non diffractive fluctuations of the incident particles. The observed large factorization breaking and the unexpected high value of the 2 to 1 gap cross-section ratio are explained in terms of scattering with and between the incident particles.

Geometric scaling as traveling waves

We show the relevance of the nonlinear Fisher and Kolmogorov-Petrovsky- Piscounov (KPP) equation to the problem of high energy evolution of the QCD amplitudes. We explain how the traveling wave solutions of this equation are related to geometric scaling, a phenomenon observed in deep-inelastic scattering experiments. Geometric scaling is for the first time shown to result from an exact solution of nonlinear QCD evolution equations. Using general results on the KPP equation, we compute the velocity of the wave front, which gives the full high energy dependence of the saturation scale.

Diffractive Production of the Higgs Boson

Diffractive production of the Higgs boson at hadron colliders is discussed in the light of the observed rate of hard diffractive dijet events at the Tevatron. The Higgs predictions of models successful for dijets are compared. LHC seems promising for a diffractive light Higgs boson and its mass determination. Hard diffractive dijets, diphotons and dileptons at the Tevatron (Run II) will be necessary to remove the remaining large uncertainties on cross-sections and signals.

On the AdS/CFT Dual of Deconstruction

We consider a class of non-supersymmetric gauge theories obtained by orbifolding the N=4 super-Yang-Mills theories. We focus on the resulting quiver theories in their deconstructed phase, both at small and large coupling, where a fifth dimension opens up. In particular we investigate the rôle played by this extra dimension when evaluating the rectangular Wilson loops encoding the interaction potential between quarks located at different points in the orbifold. The large coupling potential of the deconstructed quiver theory is determined using the AdS/CFT correspondence and analysing the corresponding minimal surface solution for the dual gravitational metric. At small coupling, the potential between quarks decreases with their angular distance while at strong coupling we find a linear dependence at large distance along the (deconstructed) fifth dimension.

Geometry of Reggeized amplitudes from AdS/CFT

String theory has long ago been initiated by the quest for a theoretical explanation of the observed high-energy ``Reggeization'' of strong interaction amplitudes. In terms of quantum field theory, it is the so-called ``soft'' regime, where the coupling constant is expected to be large and thus perturbative calculations inadequate. However, since then, no convincing derivation of the link between gauge field theory at strong coupling and string theory has come out. This 35-years-old puzzle is thus still unsolved. We discuss how modern tools like the AdS/CFT correspondence give a new insight on the problem by applying it to two-body elastic and inelastic scattering amplitudes. We obtain a geometrical interpretation of Reggeization and its relation with confinement in gauge theory.

Hard diffraction and the nature of the Pomeron

We ask the question whether the quark and gluon distributions in the Pomeron obtained from QCD fits to hard diffraction processes at HERA can be dynamically generated from a state made of ``valence-like'' gluons and sea quarks as input. By a method combining backward Q^2-evolution for data exploration and forward Q^2-evolution for a best fit determination, we find that the diffractive structure functions published by the H1 collaboration at HERA can be described by a simple ``valence-like'' input at an initial scale of order mu^2 ~ 2.3-2.7 GeV^2. The parton number sum rules at the initial scale mu^2 for the H1 fit gives 2.1\pm .1\pm .1 and .13\pm .01 \pm .02 for gluon and sea quarks respectively, corresponding to an initial Pomeron state made of (almost) only two gluons. It has flat gluon density leading to a plausible interpretation in terms of a gluonium state.

Regge amplitudes from AdS/CFT duality

String theory has long ago been initiated by the quest for a theoretical explanation of the observed high-energy ``Regge behaviour'' of strong interaction amplitudes, but this 35-years-old puzzle is still unsoved. We discuss how modern tools like the AdS/CFT correspondence give a new insight on the problem.

Higgs boson production via Double Pomeron Exchange at the LHC

We study Higgs boson production via Double Pomeron Exchange allowing for the presence of Pomeron remnants. We estimate the number of events produced at the LHC collider, as a function of the Higgs boson mass and its decay channel. The model which successfully describes the high mass dijet spectrum observed at Tevatron (run I) is used to predict rates of events with tagged protons for the acceptance range of the CMS/Totem experiments. Sizeable cross-sections and encouraging event selection signals are found, demonstrating especially for smaller Higgs boson masses the importance to study the diffractive channels. Tagging of the Pomeron remnants can be exploited to achieve a good resolution on the Higgs boson mass for inclusive diffractive events, by optimizing an intermediary analysis between higher cross-sections of the fully {\it inclusive} mode (all Pomeron remnants) and cleaner signals of the {\it exclusive} mode (without Pomeron remnants).
