Bulk and surface spin conductivity in topological insulators with hexagonal warping

We investigate the spin conductivity of topological insulators taking into account both the surface and quasi-two-dimensional bulk states. We apply a low-energy expansion of the Hamiltonian up to the third order in momentum and take into account the vertex corrections arising due to the short range disorder. Hexagonal warping gives rise to the additional anisotropic components in the spin conductivity tensor. Typically, isotropic part of the spin conductivity is larger than anisotropic one. The helical regime for the bulk states, in which the electrons in the Fermi level have the same projection of the spin on the direction of momentum, have been studied in a more detail. In this regime, a substantial increase of the spin conductivity contribution from the bulk states at the Fermi level is observed. We find that the bulk spin conductivity is insensitive to disorder if Rashba spin-orbit coupling is larger than disorder strength, otherwise, it is strongly suppressed. The contribution to the spin conductivity from the surface states is almost independent of the chemical potential, robust to disorder and its value is comparable to the spin conductivity contribution from the bulk states per layer. The obtained results are in agreement with experimental data.

Majorana fermion from Landau quantization in 2D topological superconductors

We study the generation of Majorana fermions in a two-dimensional topological superconductor placed in a transverse magnetic field B. A topological insulator/superconductor heterostructure and a two-dimensional p-wave superconductor are discussed. It is demonstrated that in these systems a single vortex creates two Majorana fermions, one hosted at the vortex core. The wave function of the second Majorana state is localized in the superconductor volume along a circle of radius $r^* \propto B^{-1}$ centered at the vortex core. In the case of many vortices, the sensitivity of $r^*$ to the magnetic field B may be used to control the coupling between the Majorana fermions. The latter property could be an asset for quantum computations.

Topological phase transition induced by Zeeman field in topological insulator/superconductor heterostructure

We investigate a topological insulator -- superconductor heterostructure with an Abrikosov vortex in a magnetic field. Large Zeeman field causes a topological phase transition in the system. We found that a Majorana fermion exists at the vortex core in the phase with zero first Chern number and does not exist at the phase with non-trivial first Chern number. This result is supported by the index theorem. This system provides an example in which a Majorana fermion emerges in a system with zero first Chern number.

Decoherence of Majorana qubits caused by particle-hole conjugation asymmetry

We investigate effects of the particle-hole asymmetry on the properties of Majorana qubtis. Particle-hole asymmetric pertrubation shifts Majorana zero mode from zero-energy. This type of asymmetry can act as a source of decoherence in Majorana qubits. We find that particle-hole asymmetric pertrubation causes phase-shifts and bit-flips decoherence processes in Majorana qubits. However, these sources of decoherence are negligible in uniform system with spatially separated Majorana zero modes.

Majorana fermions at the edge of superconducting islands

We investigate the properties of electron states localized at the edge of a superconducting island placed on the surface of a topological insulator in a magnetic field. In such systems, Majorana fermions emerge if an odd number of vortices (or odd multivortex vorticity) is hosted by the island; otherwise, no Majorana states exist. Majorana states emerge in pairs: one state is localized near the vortex core, and another at the island edge. We analyze in detail the robustness of Majorana fermions at the edge of the island threaded by a single vortex. If the system parameters are optimized, the energy gap between the Majorana fermion and the first excited state at the edge is of the order of the superconducting gap induced on the surface of the topological insulator. The stability of the Majorana fermion state against a variation of the gate voltage and its sensitivity to the magnetic field allows one to distinguish experimentally the edge Majorana fermion from conventional Dirac fermions.

Generation of localized magnetic moments in the charge-density-wave state

We propose a mechanism explaining the generation of localized magnetic moments in charge-density-wave compounds. Our model Hamiltonian describes an Anderson impurity placed in a host material exhibiting the charge-density wave. There is a region of the model's parameter space, where even weak Coulomb repulsion on the impurity site is able to localize the magnetic moment on the impurity. The phase diagram of a single impurity at T=0 is mapped. To establish the connection with experiment thermodynamic properties of a random impurity ensemble is studied. Magnetic susceptibility of the ensemble diverges at low temperature; heat capacity as a function of the magnetic field demonstrates pronounced low field peak. Both features are consistent with experiments on orthorhombic TaS3 and blue bronze.

AA-stacked bilayer graphene in an applied electric field: Tunable antiferromagnetism and coexisting exciton order parameter

We study the electronic properties of AA-stacked bilayer graphene in a transverse electric field. The strong on-site Coulomb repulsion stabilizes the antiferromagnetic order in such a system. The antiferromagnetic order is suppressed by the transverse bias voltage, at least partially. The inter-plane Coulomb repulsion and non-zero voltage stabilize an exciton order parameter. The exciton order parameter coexists with the antiferromagnetism and can be as large as several tens of meV for realistic values of the bias voltage and interaction constants. The application of a transverse bias voltage can be used to control the transport properties of the bilayer.

Tunneling spectrum of a pinned vortex with a robust Majorana state

We study a heterostructure which consists of a topological insulator and a superconductor with a hole. The hole pins a vortex. The system supports a robust Majorana fermion state bound to the vortex core. We investigate the possibility of using scanning tunneling spectroscopy (i) to detect the Majorana fermion in the proposed setup and (ii) to study excited states bound to the vortex core. The Majorana fermion manifests itself as a magnetic-field dependent zero-bias anomaly of the tunneling conductance. Optimal parameters for detecting Majorana fermions have been obtained. In the optimal regime, the Majorana fermion is separated from the excited states by a substantial gap. The number of zero-energy states equals the number of flux quanta in the hole; thus, the strength of the zero-bias anomaly depends on the magnetic field. The lowest energy excitations bound to the core are also studied. The excited states spectrum differs from the spectrum of a typical Abrikosov vortex, providing additional indirect confirmation of the Majorana state observation.
