Near-room-temperature ferromagnetic ordering in the pressure-induced collapsed-tetragonal phase in SrCo2P2

We present high pressure electrical transport, magnetization, and single crystal X-ray diffraction data on SrCo2P2 single crystals. X-ray diffraction data show that there is a transition to a collapsed tetragonal structure for p ~> 10 GPa and measurements of resistance show that above ~ 10 GPa, a clear transition-like feature can be observed at temperatures up to 260 K. Further magnetization, magnetoresistance and Hall measurements made under pressure all indicate that this transition is to a ferromagnetic ground state. First principles-based density functional theory (DFT) calculations also show that there is a first-order transition between tetragonal and collapsed tetragonal (cT) phases, with an onset near ~ 10 GPa as well as the appearance of the ferromagnetic (FM) ordering in the cT phase. Above ~ 30 GPa, the experimental signatures of the magnetic ordering vanish in a first-order-like manner, consistent with the theoretical calculation results, indicating that SrCo2P2 is another example of the avoidance of quantum criticality in ferromagnetic intermetallic compounds. SrCo2P2 provides clear evidence that the structural, electronic and magnetic properties associated with the cT transition are strongly entangled and are not only qualitatively captured by our first principles-based calculations but are quantitatively reproduced as well.

The electronic structure of EuPd$_2$Si$_2$ in the vicinity of the critical endpoint

Hard X-ray angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy reveals significant alterations in the valence band states of EuPd$_2$Si$_2$ at a temperature $T_V$, where the Eu ions undergo a temperature-induced valence crossover from a magnetic Eu$^{2+}$ state to a low-temperature valence-fluctuating state. The introduction of small amounts of Au on Pd lattice sites and Ge on Si sites, respectively, results in a decrease in $T_V$ and the emergence of an antiferromagnetic state at low temperatures without valence fluctuations. It has been proposed that the boundary between AFM order and valence crossover represents a first-order phase transition associated with a specific type of second-order critical end point. In this scenario, strong coupling effects between fluctuating charge, spin, and lattice degrees of freedom are to be expected. In the case of EuPd$_2$(Si$_{1-x}$Ge$_x$)$_2$ with x=0.13, which is situated close to the critical end point, a splitting of conduction band states and the emergence of flat bands with one-dimensional character have been observed. A comparison with ab initio theory demonstrates a high degree of correlation with experimental findings, particularly in regard to the bands situated in proximity to the critical end point.

Symmetric Kondo Lattice States in Doped Strained Twisted Bilayer Graphene

We use the topological heavy fermion (THF) model and its Kondo Lattice (KL) formulation to study the symmetric Kondo state in twisted bilayer graphene. Via a large-N approximation, we find a symmetric Kondo (SK) state in KL mode at fillings $\nu=0,\pm 1,\pm 2$. In the SK state, all symmetries are preserved and the local moments are Kondo screened by the conduction electrons. At the mean-field level of the THF model at $\nu=0,\pm 1, \pm 2, \pm 3$, we also find a similar symmetric state. We study the stability of the symmetric state by comparing its energy with the ordered states and find the ordered states to have lower energy. However, moving away from integer fillings by doping holes to the light bands, we find the energy difference is reduced, which suggests the loss of ordering and a tendency towards Kondo screening. In order to include many-body effects beyond the mean-field approximation, we perform dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) calculations on the THF model. We find the spin susceptibility follows a Curie behavior at $\nu=0, \pm 1,\pm 2$ down to $\sim 2\text{K}$ where the onset of screening of the local moment becomes visible. This hints to very low Kondo temperatures at these fillings, in agreement with the outcome of our mean-field calculations. At non-integer filling $\nu=\pm 0.5,\pm 0.8,\pm 1.2$ DMFT shows deviations from a $1/T$-susceptibility at much higher temperatures, suggesting a more effective screening of local moments with doping. Finally, we study the effect of a $C_{3z}$-rotational-symmetry-breaking strain via mean-field approaches and find that a symmetric phase (that only breaks $C_{3z}$ symmetry) can be stabilized at sufficiently large strain at $\nu=0,\pm 1, \pm 2$. Our results suggest that a symmetric Kondo phase is strongly suppressed at integer fillings, but could be stabilized either at non-integer fillings or by applying strain.

Novel magnetic stoichiometric superconductor EuRbFe4As4

In the novel stoichiometric iron-based material RbEuFe4As4 superconductivity coexists with a peculiar long-range magnetic order of Eu 4f states; their coexistance is puzzling and represents a challenge for both experiment and theory. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, resonant photoemission spectroscopy, Andreev reflection spectroscopy and scanning tunneling spectroscopy we have addressed this puzzle and unambigously shown that Fe- and Eu-derived states are largely decoupled and that superconducting and a long range magnetic orders exist almost independently from each other.

Thermodynamic perspective on the field-induced behavior of $α$-RuCl$_3$

Measurements of the magnetic Grüneisen parameter ($Γ_B$) and specific heat on the Kitaev material candidate $α$-RuCl$_3$ are used to access in-plane field- and temperature-dependence of the entropy up to 12 T and down to 1 K. No signatures corresponding to phase transitions are detected beyond the boundary of the magnetically ordered region, but only a shoulder-like anomaly in $Γ_B$, involving an entropy increment as small as $10^{-5} R\log 2$. These observations put into question the presence of a thermodynamic phase transition between the purported quantum spin liquid and the field-polarized state of $α$-RuCl$_3$. We show theoretically that at low temperatures $Γ_B$ is sensitive to crossings in the lowest excitations within gapped phases, and identify the measured shoulder-like anomaly as being of such origin. Exact diagonalization calculations demonstrate that the shoulder-like anomaly can be reproduced in extended Kitaev models that gain proximity to an additional phase at finite field without entering it. We discuss manifestations of this proximity in other measurements.

Giant pressure-enhancement of multiferroicity in CuBr2

Type-II multiferroic materials, in which ferroelectric polarization is induced by inversion non-symmetric magnetic order, promise new and highly efficient multifunctional applications based on the mutual control of magnetic and electric properties. Although this phenomenon has to date been limited to low temperatures, here we report a giant pressure-dependence of the multiferroic critical temperature in CuBr$_2$. At 4.5 GPa, $T_\mathrm{C}$ is enhanced from 73.5 to 162 K, to our knowledge the highest value yet reported for a non-oxide type-II multiferroic. This growth shows no sign of saturating and the dielectric loss remains small under these high pressures. We establish the structure under pressure and demonstrate a 60\% increase in the two-magnon Raman energy scale up to 3.6 GPa. First-principles structural and magnetic energy calculations provide a quantitative explanation in terms of dramatically pressure-enhanced interactions between CuBr$_2$ chains. These large, pressure-tuned magnetic interactions motivate structural control in cuprous halides as a route to applied high-temperature multiferroicity.

High-Field Quantum Disordered State in $α$-RuCl3: Spin Flips, Bound States, and a Multi-Particle Continuum

Layered $α$-RuCl3 has been discussed as a proximate Kitaev spin liquid compound. Raman and THz spectroscopy of magnetic excitations confirm that the low-temperature antiferromagnetic ordered phase features a broad Raman continuum, together with two magnon-like excitations at 2.7 and 3.6 meV, respectively. The continuum strength is maximized as long-range order is suppressed by an external magnetic field. The state above the field-induced quantum phase transition around 7.5 T is characterized by a gapped multi-particle continuum out of which a two-particle bound state emerges, together with a well-defined single-particle excitation at lower energy. Exact diagonalization calculations demonstrate that Kitaev and off-diagonal exchange terms in the Fleury-Loudon operator are crucial for the occurrence of these features in the Raman spectra. Our study firmly establishes the partially-polarized quantum disordered character of the high-field phase.

Chemical tuning between triangular and honeycomb structures in a 5$d$ spin-orbit Mott insulator

We report structural studies of the spin-orbit Mott insulator family K$_x$Ir$_y$O$_2$, with triangular layers of edge-sharing IrO$_6$ octahedra bonded by potassium ions. The potassium content acts as a chemical tuning parameter to control the amount of charge in the Ir-O layers. Unlike the isostructural families with Ir replaced by Co or Rh ($y=1$), which are metallic over a range of potassium compositions $x$, we instead find insulating behaviour with charge neutrality achieved via iridium vacancies, which order in a honeycomb supercell above a critical composition $x_c$. By performing density functional theory calculations we attribute the observed behaviour to a subtle interplay of crystal-field environment, local electronic correlations and strong spin-orbit interaction at the Ir$^{4+}$ sites, making this structural family a candidate to display Kitaev magnetism in the experimentally unexplored regime that interpolates between triangular and honeycomb structures.

Frustrated Magnetism in Mott Insulating (V$_{1-x}$Cr$_x$)$_2$O$_3$

V2O3 famously features all four combinations of paramagnetic vs antiferromagnetic, and metallic vs insulating states of matter in response to %-level doping, pressure in the GPa range, and temperature below 300 K. Using time-of-flight neutron spectroscopy combined with density functional theory calculations of magnetic interactions, we have mapped and analyzed the inelastic magnetic neutron scattering cross section over a wide range of energy and momentum transfer in the chromium stabilized antiferromagnetic and paramagnetic insulating phases (AFI & PI). Our results reveal an important magnetic frustration and degeneracy of the PI phase which is relieved by the rhombohedral to monoclinic transition at $T_N=185$ K due to a significant magneto-elastic coupling. This leads to the recognition that magnetic frustration is an inherent property of the paramagnetic phase in $\rm (V_{1-x}Cr_x)_2O_3$ and plays a key role in suppressing the magnetic long range ordering temperature and exposing a large phase space for the paramagnetic Mott metal-insulator transition to occur.

Novel magnetism on a honeycomb lattice in a-RuCl3 studied by muon spin rotation

Muon spin rotation measurements have been performed on a powder sample of a-RuCl3, a layered material which previously has been proposed to be a quantum magnet on a honeycomb lattice close to a quantum spin liquid ground state. Our data reveal two distinct phase transitions at 11 K and 14 K which we interpret as originating from the onset of three-dimensional order and in-plane magnetic order, respectively. We identify, with the help of density functional theory calculations, likely muon stopping sites and combine these with dipolar field calculations to show that the two measured muon rotation frequencies are consistent with two inequivalent muon sites within a zig-zag antiferromagnetic structure proposed previously.

The monoclinic crystal structure of $α$-RuCl$_3$ and the zigzag antiferromagnetic ground state

The layered honeycomb magnet alpha-RuCl3 has been proposed as a candidate to realize a Kitaev spin model with strongly frustrated, bond-dependent, anisotropic interactions between spin-orbit entangled jeff=1/2 Ru4+ magnetic moments. Here we report a detailed study of the three-dimensional crystal structure using x-ray diffraction on untwinned crystals combined with structural relaxation calculations. We consider several models for the stacking of honeycomb layers and find evidence for a crystal structure with a monoclinic unit cell corresponding to a stacking of layers with a unidirectional in-plane offset, with occasional in-plane sliding stacking faults, in contrast with the currently-assumed trigonal 3-layer stacking periodicity. We report electronic band structure calculations for the monoclinic structure, which find support for the applicability of the jeff=1/2 picture once spin orbit coupling and electron correlations are included. We propose that differences in the magnitude of anisotropic exchange along symmetry inequivalent bonds in the monoclinic cell could provide a natural mechanism to explain the spin gap observed in powder inelastic neutron scattering, in contrast to spin models based on the three-fold symmetric trigonal structure, which predict a gapless spectrum within linear spin wave theory. Our susceptibility measurements on both powders and stacked crystals, as well as neutron powder diffraction show a single magnetic transition at TN ~ 13K. The analysis of the neutron data provides evidence for zigzag magnetic order in the honeycomb layers with an antiferromagnetic stacking between layers. Magnetization measurements on stacked single crystals in pulsed field up to 60T show a single transition around 8T for in-plane fields followed by a gradual, asymptotic approach to magnetization saturation, as characteristic of strongly anisotropic exchange interactions.

Liquid-like correlations in single crystalline Y2Mo2O7: an unconventional spin glass

The spin glass behavior of Y2Mo2O7 has puzzled physicists for nearly three decades. Free of bulk disorder within the resolution of powder diffraction methods, it is thought that this material is a rare realization of a spin glass resulting from weak disorder such as bond disorder or local lattice distortions. Here, we report on the single crystal growth of Y2Mo2O7. Using neutron scattering, we present unique isotropic magnetic diffuse scattering arising beneath the spin glass transition despite having a well-ordered structure at the bulk level. Despite our attempts to model the diffuse scattering using a computationally exhaustive search of a class of simple spin Hamiltonians, we were unable to replicate the experimentally observed energy-integrated (diffuse) neutron scattering. A T^2-temperature dependence in the heat capacity and density functional theory calculations hint at significant frozen degeneracy in both the spin and orbital degrees of freedom resulting from spin-orbital coupling (Kugel-Khomskii type) and random fluctuations in the Mo environment at the local level.

Field-induced nematic-like magnetic transition in an iron pnictide superconductor, Ca$_{10}$(Pt$_{3}$As$_{8}$)((Fe$_{1-x}$Pt$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$)$_{5}$

We report a high magnetic field study up to 55 T of the nearly optimally doped iron-pnictide superconductor Ca$_{10}$(Pt$_{3}$As$_{8}$) ((Fe$_{1-x}$Pt$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$)$_{5}$ (x=0.078(6)) with a Tc 10 K using magnetic torque, tunnel diode oscillator technique and transport measurements. We determine the superconducting phase diagram, revealing an anisotropy of the irreversibility field up to a factor of 10 near Tc and signatures of multiband superconductivity. Unexpectedly, we find a spin-flop like anomaly in magnetic torque at 22 T, when the magnetic field is applied perpendicular to the ab planes, which becomes significantly more pronounced as the temperature is lowered to 0.33 K. As our superconducting sample lies well outside the antiferromagnetic region of the phase diagram, the observed field-induced transition in torque indicates a spin-flop transition not of long-range ordered moments, but of nematic-like antiferromagnetic fluctuations.

Na2IrO3 as a molecular orbital crystal

Contrary to previous studies that classify Na2IrO3 as a realization of the Heisenberg-Kitaev model with dominant spin-orbit coupling, we show that this system represents a highly unusual case in which the electronic structure is dominated by the formation of quasi-molecular orbitals (QMOs), with substantial quenching of the orbital moments. The QMOs consist of six atomic orbitals on an Ir hexagon, but each Ir atom belongs to three different QMOs. The concept of such QMOs in solids invokes very different physics compared to the models considered previously. Employing density functional theory calculations and model considerations we find that both the insulating behavior and the experimentally observed zigzag antiferromagnetism in Na2IrO3 naturally follow from the QMO model.

Distinct magnetic regimes through site-selective atom substitution in the frustrated quantum antiferromagnet Cs$_2$CuCl$_{4-x}$Br$_x$

We report on a systematic study of the magnetic properties on single crystals of the solid solution Cs$_2$CuCl$_{4-x}$Br$_x$ (0 $\leq$ x $\leq$ 4), which include the two known end-member compounds Cs$_2$CuCl$_4$ and Cs$_2$CuBr$_4$, classified as quasi-two-dimensional quantum antiferromagnets with different degrees of magnetic frustration. By comparative measurements of the magnetic susceptibility $χ$($T$) on as many as eighteen different Br concentrations, we found that the inplane and out-of-plane magnetic correlations, probed by the position and height of a maximum in the magnetic susceptibility, respectively, do not show a smooth variation with x. Instead three distinct concentration regimes can be identified, which are separated by critical concentrations x$_{c1}$ = 1 and x$_{c2}$ = 2. This unusual magnetic behavior can be explained by considering the structural peculiarities of the materials, especially the distorted Cu-halide tetrahedra, which support a site-selective replacement of Cl- by Br- ions. Consequently, the critical concentrations x$_{c1}$ (x$_{c2}$) mark particularly interesting systems, where one (two) halidesublattice positions are fully occupied.

Orbital character variation of the Fermi surface and doping dependent changes of the dimensionality in BaFe2-xCoxAs2 from angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

From a combination of high resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and density functional calculations, we show that BaFe2As2 possesses essentially two-dimensional electronic states, with a strong change of orbital character of two of the Gamma-centered Fermi surfaces as a function of kz. Upon Co doping, the electronic states in the vicinity of the Fermi level take on increasingly three-dimensional character. Both the orbital variation with kz and the more three-dimensional nature of the doped compounds have important consequences for the nesting conditions and thus possibly also for the appearance of antiferromagnetic and superconducting phases.

Electronic structure of the two-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet VOCl: a multi-orbital Mott insulator

We have studied the electronic structure of the two-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet VOCl using photoemission spectroscopy and density functional theory including local Coulomb repulsion. From calculated exchange integrals and the observed energy dispersions we argue that the degree of one-dimensionality regarding both the magnetic and electronic properties is noticeably reduced compared to the isostructural compounds TiOCl and TiOBr. Also, our analysis provides conclusive justification to classify VOCl as a multi-orbital Mott insulator. In contrast to the titanium based compounds density functional theory here gives a better description of the electronic structure. However, a quantitative account of the low-energy features and detailed line shapes calls for further investigations including dynamical and spatial correlations.

Momentum-resolved single-particle spectral function for TiOCl from a combination of density functional and variational cluster calculations

We present results for the momentum-resolved single-particle spectral function of the low-dimensional system TiOCl in the insulating state, obtained by a combination of ab initio Density Functional Theory (DFT) and Variational Cluster (VCA) calculations. This approach allows to combine a realistic band structure and a thorough treatment of the strong correlations. We show that it is important to include a realistic two-dimensional band structure of TiOCl into the effective strongly-correlated models in order to explain the spectral weight behavior seen in angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) experiments. In particular, we observe that the effect of the interchain couplings is a considerable redistribution of the spectral weight around the Gamma point from higher to lower binding energies as compared to a purely one-dimensional model treatment. Hence, our results support a description of TiOCl as a two-dimensional compound with strong anisotropy and also set a benchmark on the spectral features of correlated coupled-chain systems.
