Electronic structure studies of BaFe2As2 by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy

We report high resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) studies of the electronic structure of BaFe$_2$As$_2$, which is one of the parent compounds of the Fe-pnictide superconductors. ARPES measurements have been performed at 20 K and 300 K, corresponding to the orthorhombic antiferromagnetic phase and the tetragonal paramagnetic phase, respectively. Photon energies between 30 and 175 eV and polarizations parallel and perpendicular to the scattering plane have been used. Measurements of the Fermi surface yield two hole pockets at the $Γ$-point and an electron pocket at each of the X-points. The topology of the pockets has been concluded from the dispersion of the spectral weight as a function of binding energy. Changes in the spectral weight at the Fermi level upon variation of the polarization of the incident photons yield important information on the orbital character of the states near the Fermi level. No differences in the electronic structure between 20 and 300 K could be resolved. The results are compared with density functional theory band structure calculations for the tetragonal paramagnetic phase.

Proximity of LaOFeAs to a magnetic instability

We investigate the effect of external pressure on the Fe magnetic moment in undoped LaOFeAs within the framework of density functional theory and show that this system is close to a magnetic instability: The Fe moment is found to drop by nearly a factor of 3 within a pressure range of $\pm$ 5 GPa around the calculated equilibrium volume. While the Fe moments show an unusually strong sensitivity to the spin arrangement (type of anti-ferromagnetic structure), the low temperature structural distortion is found to have only a minor influence on them. Analysis of the Fermi surface topology and nesting features shows that these properties change very little up to pressures of at least 10 GPa. We discuss the magnetic instability in terms of the itinerancy of this system.

First principles perspective on the microscopic model for Cs2CuCl4 and Cs2CuBr4

We investigate the microscopic model for the frustrated layered antiferromagnets Cs2CuCl4 and Cs2CuBr4 by performing ab initio density functional theory (DFT) calculations and with the help of the tight-binding method. The combination of both methods provide the relevant interaction paths in these materials, and we estimate the corresponding exchange constants. We find for Cs2CuCl4 that the calculated ratio of the strongest in-plane exchange constants J'/J between the spin-1/2 Cu ions agrees well with neutron scattering experiments. The microscopic model based on the derived exchange constants is tested by comparing the magnetic susceptibilities obtained from exact diagonalization with experimental data. The electronic structure differences between Cs2CuCl4 and Cs2CuBr4 are also analyzed.

Tetrahedra system Cudaca: high-temperature manifold of molecular configurations governing low-temperature properties

The Cudaca system composed of isolated Cu2+ S=1/2 tetrahedra with antiferromagnetic exchange should exhibit properties of a frustrated quantum spin system. ab initio density functional theory calculations for electronic structure and molecular dynamics computations suggest a complex interplay between magnetic exchange, electron delocalization and molecular vibrations. Yet, extensive experimental characterization of Cudaca by means of synchrotron x-ray diffraction, magnetization, specific heat and inelastic neutron scattering reveal that properties of the real material can be only partly explained by proposed theoretical models as the low temperature properties seem to be governed by a manifold of molecular configurations coexisting at high temperatures.

Effects of Two Energy Scales in Weakly Dimerized Antiferromagnetic Quantum Spin Chains

By means of thermal expansion and specific heat measurements on the high-pressure phase of (VO)$_2$P$_2$O$_7$, the effects of two energy scales of the weakly dimerized antiferromagnetic $S$ = 1/2 Heisenberg chain are explored. The low energy scale, given by the spin gap $Δ$, is found to manifest itself in a pronounced thermal expansion anomaly. A quantitative analysis, employing T-DMRG calculations, shows that this feature originates from changes in the magnetic entropy with respect to $Δ$, $\partial S^{m}/ \partial Δ$. This term, inaccessible by specific heat, is visible only in the weak-dimerization limit where it reflects peculiarities of the excitation spectrum and its sensitivity to variations in $Δ$.

Cluster Dynamical Mean-field calculations for TiOCl

Based on a combination of cluster dynamical mean field theory (DMFT) and density functional calculations, we calculated the angle-integrated spectral density in the layered $s=1/2$ quantum magnet TiOCl. The agreement with recent photoemission and oxygen K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy experiments is found to be good. Th e improvement achieved with this calculation with respect to previous single-site DMFT calculations is an indication of the correlated nature and low-dimensionality of TiOCl.

Density functional study of the electronic and vibrational properties of TiOCl

We present the phonon spectrum of TiOCl computed using hybrid density functional theory (DFT). A complete analysis of the spectrum is performed for the space group Pmmn (high symmetry phase) and the space group P2_1/m (low symmetry phase), which is the symmetry of the spin-Peierls phase. We show that the nonlocal correlations present in the hybrid DFT approach are important for understanding the electron-lattice interactions in TiOCl. The computed frequencies compare well with those observed in Raman and infrared spectroscopy experiments and we identify the origin of an anomalous phonon observed in Raman spectroscopy. The relationship between relevant zone boundary phonons in the high symmetry phase and the zone center counterparts in the P2_1/m symmetry allow us to speculate about the origin of the spin-Peierls phonon.

One-dimensional versus two-dimensional correlation effects in the oxyhalides TiOCl and TiOBr

We have performed a comparative study of the electronic structures of the spin-Peierls systems TiOCl and TiOBr by means of photoemission spectroscopy and density functional calculations. While the overall electronic structure of these isostructural compounds is qualitatively similar, the bromide appears to be less one-dimensional. We present a quantitative analysis of the experimental dispersions in terms of exchange constant J and hopping integral t as well as a discussion of the qualitative spectral features. From that we conclude that despite the one-dimensional physics triggering the ground state in both compounds a proper description of the normal state electronic structure has to take into account the anisotropic frustrated interchain interactions on the underlying triangular lattice.

Comparative investigation of the coupled-tetrahedra quantum spin systems Cu2Te2O5X2, X=Cl, Br and Cu4Te5O12Cl4

We present a comparative study of the coupled-tetrahedra quantum spin systems Cu2Te2O5X2, X=Cl, Br (Cu-2252(X)) and the newly synthesized Cu4Te5O12Cl4 (Cu-45124(Cl)) based on ab initio Density Functional Theory calculations. The magnetic behavior of Cu-45124(Cl) with a phase transition to an ordered state at a lower critical temperature T$_c$=13.6K than in Cu-2252(Cl) (T$_c$=18K) can be well understood in terms of the modified interaction paths. We identify the relevant structural changes between the two systems and discuss the hypothetical behavior of the not yet synthesized Cu-45124(Br) with an ab initio relaxed structure using Car-Parrinello Molecular Dynamics.

Unusual quasi-one-dimensional electron dispersions in the spin-1/2 quantum magnet TiOCl

We have studied the electronic structure of the spin-1/2 quantum magnet TiOCl by polarization-dependent momentum-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy. From that, we confirm the quasi-one-dimensional nature of the electronic structure along the crystallographic b-axis and find no evidence for sizable phonon-induced orbital fluctuations as origin for the non-canonical phenomenology of the spin-Peierls transition in this compound. A comparison of the experimental data to our own LDA+U and Hubbard model calculations reveals a striking lack of understanding regarding the quasi-one-dimensional electron dispersions in the normal state of this compound.

Spin gap formation in the quantum spin systems TiOX, X=Cl and Br

In the layered quantum spin systems TiOCl and TiOBr the magnetic susceptibility shows a very weak temperature dependence at high temperatures and transition-induced phenomena at low temperatures. There is a clear connection of the observed transition temperatures to the distortion of the octahedra and the layer separation. Band structure calculations point to a relation of the local coordinations and the dimensionality of the magnetic properties. While from magnetic Raman scattering only a small decrease of the magnetic exchange by -5-10% is derived comparing TiOCl with TiOBr, the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility favors a much bigger change.

Correlation effects on the electronic structure of TiOCl: a NMTO+DMFT study

Using the recently developed N-th order muffin-tin orbital-based downfolding technique in combination with the Dynamical Mean Field theory, we investigate the electronic properties of the much discussed Mott insulator TiOCl in the undimerized phase. Inclusion of correlation effects through this approach provides a description of the spectral function into an upper and a lower Hubbard band with broad valence states formed out of the orbitally polarized, lower Hubbard band. We find that these results are in good agreement with recent photo-emission spectra.

Longitudinal magnon in the tetrahedral spin system Cu2Te2O5Br2 near quantum criticality

We present a comprehensive study of the coupled tetrahedra-compound Cu2Te2O5Br2 by theory and experiments in external magnetic fields. We report the observation of a longitudinal magnon in Raman scattering in the ordered state close to quantum criticality. We show that the excited tetrahedral-singlet sets the energy scale for the magnetic ordering temperature T_N. This energy is determined experimentally. The ordering temperature T_N has an inverse-log dependence on the coupling parameters near quantum criticality.

Comparative study between two quantum spin systems KCuCl$_{3}$ and TlCuCl$_{3}$

We have performed an {\it ab initio} study of the electronic structure of two isostructural quantum spin systems, KCuCl$_{3}$ and TlCuCl$_{3}$, which have recently attracted much attention due to their unconventional magnetic properties. Our first-principles analysis shows unambiguously the role of Tl, as opposed to structural differences between the two compounds, in making TlCuCl$_{3}$ a {\it strongly} coupled s=1/2 dimer system compared to KCuCl$_{3}$ which shows a {\it weakly} coupled s=1/2 dimer behavior. Good agreement with the existing analysis of inelastic neutron scattering results has been observed.

Low Energy Singlets in the Excitation Spectrum of the Spin Tetrahedra System Cu_2Te_2O_5Br_2

Low energy Raman scattering of the s=1/2 spin tetrahedra system Cu_2Te_2O_5Br_2 is dominated by an excitation at 18 cm^{-1} corresponding to an energy E_S=0.6Δ, with Δthe spin gap of the compound. For elevated temperatures this mode shows a soft mode-like decrease in energy pointing to an instability of the system. The isostructural reference system Cu_2Te_2O_5Cl_2 with a presumably larger inter-tetrahedra coupling does not show such a low energy mode. Instead its excitation spectrum and thermodynamic properties are compatible with long range Neel-ordering. We discuss the observed effects in the context of quantum fluctuations and competing ground states.

Evidence for an unconventional magnetic instability in the spin-tetrahedra system Cu_2Te_2O_5Br_2

Thermodynamic experiments as well as Raman scattering have been used to study the magnetic instabilities in the spin-tetrahedra systems Cu_2Te_2O_5X_2, X=Cl and Br. While the phase transition observed in the Cl system at T_o=18.2 K is consistent with 3D AF ordering, the phase transition at T_o=11.3 K in the Br system has several unusual features. We propose an explanation in terms of weakly coupled tetrahedra with a singlet-triplet gap and low lying singlets.

Modeling the electronic behavior of $γ$-LiV2O5: a microscopic study

We determine the electronic structure of the one-dimensional spin-1/2 Heisenberg compound $γ$-LiV$_2$O$_5$, which has two inequivalent vanadium ions, V(1) and V(2), via density-functional calculations. We find a relative V(1)-V(2) charge ordering of roughly $70:30$. We discuss the influence of the charge ordering on the electronic structure and the magnetic behavior. We give estimates of the basic hopping matrix elements and compare with the most studied $α'$-NaV$_2$O$_5$.

A Generalized Ginzburg-Landau Approach to Second Harmonic Generation

We develop a generalized Ginzburg-Landau theory for second harmonic generation (SHG) in magnets by expanding the free energy in terms of the order parameter in the magnetic phase and the susceptibility tensor in the corresponding high-temperature phase. The non-zero components of the SHG susceptibility in the ordered phase are derived from the symmetries of the susceptibility tensor in the high-temperature phase and the symmetry of the order parameter. In this derivation, the dependence of the SHG susceptibility on the order parameter follows naturally, and therefore its nonreciprocal optical properties. We examine this phenomenology for the magnetoelectric compound Cr$_2$O$_3$ as well as for the ferroelectromagnet YMnO$_3$.
