Jet Photoproduction in Peripheral Heavy-Ion Collisions

In peripheral relativistic heavy ion collisions at the Large Hadron Collider, jet+jet and photon+jet final states can be produced when a photon from the virtual photon field surrounding the nucleus interacts with a parton in the opposite nucleus (direct production). The virtual photon may also fluctuate into states with multiple gluons and q-qbar pairs (resolved production), opening more channels for jet photoproduction. We compare the rates for direct and resolved jet+jet and photon+jet production to explore the sensitivity to the nuclear and photon parton distribution functions. We calculate the transverse momentum distributions of both partonic jets and leading hadrons produced by jet fragmentation.

Enhanced charm hadroproduction due to nonlinear corrections to the DGLAP equations

We have studied the effects of nonlinear scale evolution of the parton distribution functions to charm production in $pp$ collisions at center-of-mass energies of 5.5, 8.8 and 14 TeV. We find that the differential charm cross section can be enhanced up to a factor of 4-5 at low $p_T$. The enhancement is quite sensitive to the charm quark mass and the renormalization/factorization scales.

Hard probes in heavy ion collisions at the LHC: heavy flavour physics

We present the results from the heavy quarks and quarkonia working group. This report gives benchmark heavy quark and quarkonium cross sections for $pp$ and $pA$ collisions at the LHC against which the $AA$ rates can be compared in the study of the quark-gluon plasma. We also provide an assessment of the theoretical uncertainties in these benchmarks. We then discuss some of the cold matter effects on quarkonia production, including nuclear absorption, scattering by produced hadrons, and energy loss in the medium. Hot matter effects that could reduce the observed quarkonium rates such as color screening and thermal activation are then discussed. Possible quarkonium enhancement through coalescence of uncorrelated heavy quarks and antiquarks is also described. Finally, we discuss the capabilities of the LHC detectors to measure heavy quarks and quarkonia as well as the Monte Carlo generators used in the data analysis.

Enhancement of charm quark production due to nonlinear corrections to the DGLAP equations

We have studied how parton distributions based on the inclusion of nonlinear scale evolution and constraints from HERA data affect charm production in $pp$ collisions at center-of-mass energies of 5.5, 8.8 and 14 TeV. We find that, while the resulting enhancement can be substantial, it is very sensitive to the charm quark mass and the scale entering the parton densities and the strong coupling constant.

Hard probes in heavy ion collisions at the LHC: PDFs, shadowing and $pA$ collisions

This manuscript is the outcome of the subgroup ``PDFs, shadowing and $pA$ collisions'' from the CERN workshop ``Hard Probes in Heavy Ion Collisions at the LHC''. In addition to the experimental parameters for $pA$ collisions at the LHC, the issues discussed are factorization in nuclear collisions, nuclear parton distributions (nPDFs), hard probes as the benchmark tests of factorization in $pA$ collisions at the LHC, and semi-hard probes as observables with potentially large nuclear effects. Also, novel QCD phenomena in $pA$ collisions at the LHC are considered. The importance of the $pA$ program at the LHC is emphasized.

Inhomogeneous Shadowing Effects on J/ψProduction in dA Collisions

We study the effect of spatially homogeneous and inhomogeneous shadowing on $J/ψ$ production in deuterium-nucleus collisions. We discuss how the shadowing and its spatial dependence may be measured by comparing central and peripheral $dA$ collisions. These event classes may be selected by using gray protons from heavy ion breakup and events where the proton or neutron in the deuterium does not interact. We find that inhomogenous shadowing has a significant effect on central $dA$ collisions, larger than is observed in central $AA$ collisions. The inhomogeneity may be measured by comparing the rapidity dependence of $J/ψ$ production in central and peripheral collisions. Results are presented for $d$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200$ GeV and $d$Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 6.2$ TeV.

Threshold Effects in Charm Hadroproduction

We describe calculations of $c \bar c$ production to next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) and next-to-next-to-leading logarithm (NNLL) near threshold in $pp$ and $π^- p$ interactions. We study the relevance of these calculations for existing $c \bar c$ total cross section data by examining their sensitivity to partonic threshold kinematics, their convergence properties and scale dependence.

$Ξ^-$ and $Ω$ Distributions in Hadron-Nucleus Interactions

Strange baryons have long been known to exhibit a leading particle effect. A recent comparison of $Ξ^-$ production in $π^-$, $n$, and $Σ^-$ interactions with nuclei show this effect clearly. These data are supplemented by earlier measurements of $Ξ^-$ and $Ω$ production by a $Ξ^-$ beam. We calculate the $Ξ^-$ and $Ω$ $x_F$ distributions and nuclear dependence in $hA$ interactions using the intrinsic model.

Nuclear Shadowing and High-$p_T$ Hadron Spectra in Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions

We explore how nuclear modifications to the nucleon parton distributions affect production of high-$p_T$ hadrons in heavy ion collisions. We perform a leading order calculation of the high-$p_T$ charged pion, kaon and proton spectra using standard fragmentation functions and shadowing parameterizations. We also consider alternate models of shadowing. Near midrapidity, shadowing is a small effect and cannot explain the large observed suppression of high-$p_T$ hadrons. We also consider the isospin difference between protons and nuclei and find that it is also a small effect on high-$p_T$ hadron production.

Understanding Bottom Production

We describe calculations of b b-bar production to next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) and next-to-next-to-leading logarithm (NNLL) near threshold in pp interactions. Our calculations are in good agreement with the b b-bar total cross section measured by HERA-B.

What is the Real K Factor?

The theoretical K factor, describing the difference between the leading and higher order cross sections, has no precise definition. The definition is sensitive to the order of the fit to the parton densities and the number of loops at which alpha_s is evaluated. We describe alternate ways to define the K factor and show how the definition affects its magnitude and shape for examples of hadroproduction of W^+ bosons, Drell-Yan lepton pairs, and heavy quarks. We discuss which definition is appropriate under certain circumstances.

Heavy Quark Production in Heavy Ion Colliders

We describe updated calculations of $Q \bar Q$ production in $pp$ and $π^- p$ interactions. We compare these results to total cross section data and discuss how the baseline cross sections extrapolate to heavy ion collider energies. We touch upon the differences between leading and next-to-leading order heavy quark production. Finally, we discuss the implications of our calculations for quarkonium production. Our discussion here focuses on bottom quarks.

The QCD/SM Working Group: Summary Report

This Report documents the results obtained by the Working Group on Quantum ChromoDynamics and the Standard Model for the Workshop ``Physics at TeV Colliders'', Les Houches, France, 21 May - 1 June 2001. The account of uncertainties in Parton Distribution Functions is reviewed. Progresses in the description of multiparton final states at Next-to-Leading Order and the extension of calculations for precision QCD observables beyond this order are summarized. Various issues concerning the relevance of resummation for observables at TeV colliders is examined. Improvements to algorithms of jet reconstruction are discussed and predictions for diphoton and photon pi-zero production at the LHC are made for kinematic variables of interest regarding searches for a Higgs boson decaying into two photons. Finally, several improvements implemented in Monte-Carlo event generators are documented.

Systematics of Heavy Quark Production at RHIC

We discuss a program for systematic studies of heavy quark production in $pp$, $pA$ and $AA$ interactions. The $Q \bar Q$ production cross sections themselves cannot be accurately predicted to better than 50% at RHIC. For studies of deviations in $Q \bar Q$ production such as those by nuclear shadowing and heavy quark energy loss, the $pp$ cross section thus needs to be measured. We then show that the ratio of $pA$ to $pp$ dilepton mass distributions can provide a measurement of the nuclear gluon distribution. With total rates and nuclear shadowing under control it is easier to study energy loss and to use $c \bar c$ as a normalization of $J/ψ$ production.

The A Dependence of Open Charm and Bottom Production

We study inclusive heavy quark and exclusive heavy quark pair production in pp, pA and AA interactions. Intrinsic transverse momentum is introduced in pp interactions. Nuclear effects, limited to $k_T$ broadening and nuclear shadowing, are introduced in pA and AA interactions. The nuclear dependence is studied over a range of energies, both in fixed target and collider setups.
