Are the $J/ψ$ and $χ_c A$ Dependencies the Same?

It has been empirically observed that the dependence of $J/ψ$ and $ψ'$ production on nuclear mass number $A$ is very similar. This has been postulated to be due to the predominance of color octet pre-resonant states in charmonium production and absorption. Two new experiments, NA60 at CERN and HERA-B at DESY, will measure the $χ_c$ $A$ dependence for the first time. These measurements should shed new light on the charmonium production and absorption mechanisms.

Shadowing Effects on Vector Boson Production

We explore how nuclear modifications to the nucleon structure functions, shadowing, affect massive gauge boson production in heavy ion collisions at different impact parameters. We calculate the dependence of $Z^0$, $W^+$ and $W^-$ production on rapidity and impact parameter to next-to-leading order in Pb+Pb collisions at 5.5 TeV/nucleon to study quark shadowing at high $Q^2$. We also compare our Pb+Pb results to the $pp$ rapidity distributions at 14 TeV.

Sudakov Resummation and Finite Order Expansions of Heavy Quark Hadroproduction Cross Sections

We resum Sudakov threshold enhancements in heavy quark hadroproduction for single-heavy quark inclusive and pair-inclusive kinematics. We expand these resummed results and derive analytical finite-order cross sections through next-to-next-to-leading order. This involves the construction of next-to-leading order matching conditions in color space. For the scale dependent terms we derive exact results using renormalization group methods. We study the effects of scale variations, scheme and kinematics choice on the partonic and hadronic cross sections, and provide estimates for top and bottom quark production cross sections.

Obtaining the nuclear gluon distribution from heavy quark decays to lepton pairs in p$A$ collisions

We have studied how lepton pairs from decays of heavy-flavoured mesons produced in p$A$ collisions can be used to determine the modifications of the gluon distribution in the nucleus. Since heavy quark production is dominated by the $gg$ channel, the ratio of correlated lepton pair cross sections from $D\bar D$ and $B\bar B$ decays in p$A$ and pp collisions directly reflects the ratio $R_g^A \equiv f_g^A/f_g^p$. We have numerically calculated the lepton pair cross sections from these decays in pp and p$A$ collisions at SPS, RHIC and LHC energies. We find that ratio of the p$A$ to pp cross sections agrees quite well with the input $R_g^A.$ Thus, sufficiently accurate measurements could be used to determine the nuclear modification of the gluon distribution over a greater range of $x$ and $Q^2$ than presently available, putting strong constraints on models.

Physics of the Nucleon Sea Quark Distributions

Sea quark distributions in the nucleon have naively been expected to be generated perturbatively by gluon splitting. In this case, there is no reason for the light quark and anti-quark sea distributions to be different. No asymmetries in the strange or heavy quark sea distributions are predicted in the improved parton model. However, recent experiments have called these naive expectations into question. A violation of the Gottfried sum rule has been measured in several experiments, suggesting that $\bar u < \bar d$ in the proton. Additionally, other measurements, while not definitive, show that there may be an asymmetry in the strange and anti-strange quark sea distributions. These effects may require nonperturbative explanations. In this review we first discuss the perturbative aspects of the sea quark distributions. We then describe the experiments that could point to nonperturbative contributions to the nucleon sea. Current phenomenological models that could explain some of these effects are reviewed.

Bottom Production Asymmetries at the LHC

We present results on bottom hadron production asymmetries at the LHC within both the Lund string fragmentation model and the intrinsic bottom model. The main aspects of the models are summarized and specific predictions for pp collisions at 14 TeV are given. Asymmetries are found to be very small at central rapidities increasing to a few percent at forward rapidities. At very large rapidities intrinsic production could dominate but this region is probably out of reach of any experiment.

Higher Twist Contributions To R-Hadron Phenomenology In The Light Gluino Scenario

The open light gluino window allows non-trivial higher twist gluino contributions to the proton wave function. Using a two-component model originally developed for charm hadroproduction, higher twist intrinsic gluino contributions to final state R-hadron formation are shown to enhance leading twist production in the forward $x_{F}$ region. We calculate R-hadron production at $p_{\rm{lab}}=800$ GeV in pp, pBe, and pCu interactions with light gluino masses of 1.2, 1.5, 3.5, and 5.0 GeV.

The Effect of Shadowing on Initial Conditions, Transverse Energy and Hard Probes in Ultrarelativistic Heavy Ion Collisions

The effect of shadowing on the early state of ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions is investigated along with transverse energy and hard process production, specifically Drell-Yan, $J/ψ$, and $Υ$ production. We choose several parton distributions and parameterizations of nuclear shadowing, as well as the spatial dependence of shadowing, to study the influence of shadowing on relevant observables. Results are presented for Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 200$ GeV and Pb+Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 5.5$ TeV.

The $x_F$ Dependence of $ψ$ and Drell-Yan Production

We discuss the nuclear dependence of $ψ$ and $ψ'$ production in hadron-nucleus interactions as a function of longitudinal momentum fraction $x_F$. Nuclear effects such as final-state absorption, interactions with comovers, shadowing of parton distributions, energy loss, and intrinsic heavy-quark components are described separately and incorporated into the model which is then compared to the preliminary E866 data. The resulting nuclear dependence of Drell-Yan production at 800 GeV and proposed measurements of $ψ$, $ψ'$ and Drell-Yan production at 120 GeV are also calculated.

Relation of hard and total cross sections to centrality

We compare the fractions of the hard and geometric cross sections as a function of impact parameter. For a given definition of central collisions, we calculate the corresponding impact parameter and the fraction of the hard cross section contained within this cut. We use charm quark production as a definite example.

Modelling J/psi production and absorption in a microscopic nonequilibrium approach

Charmonium production and absorption in heavy ion collisions is studied with the Ultrarelativisitic Quantum Molecular Dynamics model. We compare the scenario of universal and time independent color-octet dissociation cross sections with one of distinct color-singlet J/psi, psi' and chi_c states, evolving from small, color transparent configurations to their asymptotic sizes. The measured J/psi production cross sections in pA and AB collisions at SPS energies are consistent with both - purely hadronic - scenarios. The predicted rapidity dependence of J/psi suppression can be used to discriminate between the two experimentally. The importance of interactions with secondary hadrons and the applicability of thermal reaction kinetics to J/psi absorption are investigated. We discuss the effect of nuclear stopping and the role of leading hadrons. The dependence of the psi' to J/psi ratio on the model assumptions and the possible influence of refeeding processes is also studied.

J/psi suppression in heavy ion collisions - interplay of hard and soft QCD processes

We study J/psi suppression in AB collisions assuming that the charmonium states evolve from small, color transparent configurations. Their interaction with nucleons and nonequilibrated, secondary hadrons is simulated using the microscopic model UrQMD. The Drell-Yan lepton pair yield and the J/psi/Drell-Yan ratio are calculated as a function of the neutral transverse energy in Pb+Pb collisions at 160 GeV and found to be in reasonable agreement with existing data.

Dissociation rates of J/psi's with comoving mesons - thermal vs. nonequilibrium scenario

We study J/psi dissociation processes in hadronic environments. The validity of a thermal meson gas ansatz is tested by confronting it with an alternative, nonequilibrium scenario. Heavy ion collisions are simulated in the framework of the microscopic transport model UrQMD, taking into account the production of charmonium states through hard parton-parton interactions and subsequent rescattering with hadrons. The thermal gas and microscopic transport scenarios are shown to be very dissimilar. Estimates of J/psi survival probabilities based on thermal models of comover interactions in heavy ion collisions are therefore not reliable.

Impact Parameter Dependence of $J/ψ$ and Drell-Yan Production in Heavy Ion Collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 17.3$ GeV

In heavy-ion collisions, $J/ψ$ and Drell-Yan production are expected to be affected by nuclear modifications to the free nucleon structure functions. If these modifications, known as shadowing, are proportional to the local nuclear density, the per nucleon cross sections will depend on centrality. Differences in quark and gluon shadowing will lead to a new source of impact parameter dependence of the $J/ψ$ to Drell-Yan production ratio. We calculate this ratio in the CERN NA50 acceptance with several shadowing parameterizations to explore its centrality dependence.

Iterated Monoidal Categories

We develop a notion of iterated monoidal category and show that this notion corresponds in a precise way to the notion of iterated loop space. Specifically the group completion of the nerve of such a category is an iterated loop space and free iterated monoidal categories give rise to finite simplicial operads of the same homotopy type as the classical little cubes operads used to parametrize the higher H-space structure of iterated loop spaces. Iterated monoidal categories encompass, as a special case, the notion of braided tensor categories, as used in the theory of quantum groups.

Leading Charm in Hadron-Nucleus Interactions in the Intrinsic Charm Model

Leading charm hadrons produced in hadron-nucleus interactions cannot be adequately described within the parton fusion model. Recent results on charm baryon production in $Σ^- A$ interactions at 330 GeV with the WA89 detector disagree with fusion predictions. Intrinsic heavy quark pairs in the $Σ^-(dds)$ wavefunction provide a simple mechanism for producing fast charm hadrons. We calculate leading charm baryon production from $Σ^-$, $π^-$ and $p$ projectiles in a two component model combining parton fusion with intrinsic charm. Final state $D^{-}$, $Σ_{c}^{0}$, $Ξ_{c}^{+}$, and $Λ_{c}^{+}$ $dσ/dx_{F}$ distributions and $D^-/D^+$, $D_s^-/D_s^+$ and $Λ_c^+/\bar Λ^+_c$ asymmetries are compared to WA89 data. Predictions are made for 650 GeV $Σ^- A$ and $π^- A$ interactions in the SELEX detector at Fermilab and for 800 GeV $pA$ interactions.
