Komar energy and Smarr formula for noncommutative Schwarzschild black hole

We calculate the Komar energy $E$ for a noncommutative Schwarzschild black hole. A deformation from the conventional identity $E=2ST_H$ is found in the next to leading order computation in the noncommutative parameter $θ$ (i.e. $\mathcal{O}(\sqrtθe^{-M^2/θ})$) which is also consistent with the fact that the area law now breaks down. This deformation yields a nonvanishing Komar energy at the extremal point $T_{H}=0$ of these black holes. We then work out the Smarr formula, clearly elaborating the differences from the standard result $M=2ST_H$, where the mass ($M$) of the black hole is identified with the asymptotic limit of the Komar energy. Similar conclusions are also shown to hold for a deSitter--Schwarzschild geometry.

Lagrangian generators of the Poincare gauge symmetries

We have systematically computed the generators of the symmetries arising in Poincare gauge theory formulation of gravity, both in 2+1 and 3+1 dimensions. This was done using a completely Lagrangian approach. The results are expected to be valid in any dimensions, as seen through lifting the results of the 2+1 dimensional example into the 3+1 dimensional one.

A Superspace formulation of Yang-Mills theory on sphere

A superspace approach to the Becchi-Rouet-Stora-Tyutin (BRST) formalism for the Yang-Mills theory on an n-dimensional unit sphere, S_1^{n}, is developed in a manifestly covariant manner based on the rotational supersymmetry characterized by the supergroup OSp(n+1|2). This is done by employing an (n+2)-dimensional unit supersphere, S_1^{n|2}, parametrized by n commutative and 2 anticommutative coordinate variables so that it includes S_1^{n} as a subspace and realizes the OSp(n+1|2) supersymmetry. In this superspace formulation, referred to as the supersphere formulation, the so-called horizontality condition is concisely expressed in terms of the rank-3 field strength tensor of a Yang-Mills superfield on S_1^{n|2}. The supersphere formulation completely covers the BRST gauge-fixing procedure for the Yang-Mills theory on S_1^{n} provided by us [R. Banerjee and S. Deguchi, Phys. Lett. B 632 (2006) 579, arXiv:hep-th/0509161]. Furthermore, this formulation admits the (massive) Curci-Ferrari model defined on S_1^{n}, describing the gauge-fixing and mass terms on S_1^{n} together as a mass term on S_1^{n|2}.

From black holes to emergent gravity

Many inequivalent approaches to study black holes yield identical results. Any meaningful theory of gravity should explain the origin of this property. Here we show that the basic holomorphic modes characterising the underlying two dimensional conformal symmetry near the horizon bring about this universality. Moreover these modes lead to a law of equipartition of energy for black holes which suggests a statistical origin of gravity. This emergent nature of gravity is further bolstered by showing the equivalence of entropy with the action $\left(S=-\frac{i}{\hbar}\,I\right)$ and expressing the generalised Smarr formula for mass as a thermodynamic relation, $S=\frac{E}{2T}$ where $S$, $E$ and $T$ are the entropy, energy and temperature, respectively, of a black hole.

Statistical Origin of Gravity

Starting from the definition of entropy used in statistical mechanics we show that it is proportional to the gravity action. For a stationary black hole this entropy is expressed as $S = E/ 2T$, where $T$ is the Hawking temperature and $E$ is shown to be the Komar energy. This relation is also compatible with the generalised Smarr formula for mass.

Generalised Uncertainty Principle, Remnant Mass and Singularity Problem in Black Hole Thermodynamics

We have derived a new Generalised Uncertainty Principle (GUP) based on certain general assumptions. This GUP is consistent with predictions from string theory. It is then used to study Schwarzschild black hole thermodynamics. Corrections to the mass-temperature relation, area law and heat capacity are obtained. We find that the evaporation process stops at a particular mass, referred as the remnant mass. This is instrumental in bypassing the well known singularity problem that occurs in a semiclassical approach.

Quantum tunneling and black hole spectroscopy

The entropy-area spectrum of a black hole has been a long-standing and unsolved problem. Based on a recent methodology introduced by two of the authors, for the black hole radiation (Hawking effect) as tunneling effect, we obtain the entropy spectrum of a black hole. In Einstein's gravity, we show that both entropy and area spectrum are evenly spaced. But in more general theories (like Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity), although the entropy spectrum is equispaced, the corresponding area spectrum is not.

Voros product, Noncommutative Schwarzschild Black Hole and Corrected Area Law

We show the importance of the Voros product in defining a noncommutative Schwarzschild black hole. The corrected entropy/area-law is then computed in the tunneling formalism. Two types of corrections are considered; one, due to the effects of noncommutativity and the other, due to the effects of going beyond the semiclassical approximation. The leading correction to the semiclassical entropy/area-law is logarithmic and its coefficient involves the noncommutative parameter.

Symmetries of topological gravity with torsion in the hamiltonian and lagrangian formalisms

A systematic analysis of the symmetries of topological 3D gravity with torsion and a cosmological term, in the first order formalism, has been performed in details - both in the hamiltonian and lagrangian formalisms. This illuminates the connection between the symmetries of curved spacetime (diffeomorphisms plus local Lorentz transformations) with the Poincare gauge transformations. The Poincare gauge symmetries of the action are shown to be inequivalent to its gauge symmetries. Finally, the complete analysis is compared with the metric formulation where the diffeomorphism symmetry is shown to be equivalent to the gauge symmetry.

Aspects of Diffeomorphism and Conformal invariance in classical Liouville theory

The interplay between the diffeomorphism and conformal symmetries (a feature common in quantum field theories) is shown to be exhibited for the case of black holes in two dimensional classical Liouville theory. We show that although the theory is conformally invariant in the near horizon limit, there is a breaking of the diffeomorphism symmetry at the classical level. On the other hand, in the region away from the horizon, the conformal symmetry of the theory gets broken with the diffeomorphism symmetry remaining intact.

Quantum Tunneling, Blackbody Spectrum and Non-Logarithmic Entropy Correction for Lovelock Black Holes

We show, using the tunneling method, that Lovelock black holes Hawking radiate with a perfect blackbody spectrum. This is a new result. Within the semiclassical (WKB) approximation the temperature of the spectrum is given by the semiclassical Hawking temperature. Beyond the semiclassical approximation the thermal nature of the spectrum does not change but the temperature undergoes some higher order corrections. This is true for both black hole (event) and cosmological horizons. Using the first law of thermodynamics the black hole entropy is calculated. Specifically the $D$-dimensional static, chargeless black hole solutions which are spherically symmetric and asymptotically flat, AdS or dS are considered. The interesting property of these black holes is that their semiclassical entropy does not obey the Bekenstein-Hawking area law. It is found that the leading correction to the semiclassical entropy for these black holes is not logarithmic and next to leading correction is also not inverse of horizon area. This is in contrast to the black holes in Einstein gravity. The modified result is due to the presence of Gauss-Bonnet term in the Lovelock Lagrangian. For the limit where the coupling constant of the Gauss-Bonnet term vanishes one recovers the known correctional terms as expected in Einstein gravity. Finally we relate the coefficient of the leading (non-logarithmic) correction with the trace anomaly of the stress tensor.

Exact Differential and Corrected Area Law for Stationary Black Holes in Tunneling Method

We give a new and conceptually simple approach to obtain the first law of black hole thermodynamics from a basic thermodynamical property that entropy (S) for any stationary black hole is a state function implying that dS must be an exact differential. Using this property we obtain some conditions which are analogous to Maxwell's relations in ordinary thermodynamics. From these conditions we are able to explicitly calculate the semiclassical Bekenstein-Hawking entropy, considering the most general metric represented by the Kerr-Newman spacetime. We extend our method to find the corrected entropy of stationary black holes in (3+1) dimensions. For that we first calculate the corrected Hawking temperature considering both scalar particle and fermion tunneling beyond the semiclassical approximation. Using this corrected Hawking temperature we compute the corrected entropy, based on properties of exact differentials. The connection of the coefficient of the leading (logarithmic) correction with the trace anomaly of the stress tensor is established . We explicitly calculate this coefficient for stationary black holes with various metrics, emphasising the role of Komar integrals.

Hawking Radiation, Covariant Boundary Conditions and Vacuum States

The basic characteristics of the covariant chiral current $ $ and the covariant chiral energy-momentum tensor $ $ are obtained from a chiral effective action. These results are used to justify the covariant boundary condition used in recent approaches \cite{Isowilczek,Isoumtwilczek,shailesh,shailesh2,Banerjee} of computing the Hawking flux from chiral gauge and gravitational anomalies. We also discuss a connection of our results with the conventional calculation of nonchiral currents and stress tensors in different (Unruh, Hartle-Hawking and Boulware) states.

Hawking black body spectrum from tunneling mechanism

We obtain, using a reformulation of the tunneling mechanism, the Hawking black body spectrum with the appropriate temperature for a black hole. This is a new result in the tunneling formalism of discussing Hawking effect. Our results are given for a spherically symmetric geometry that is asymptotically flat.

Quantum Tunneling and Trace Anomaly

We compute the corrections, using the tunneling formalisim based on a quantum WKB approach, to the Hawking temperature and Bekenstein-Hawking entropy for the Schwarzschild black hole. The results are related to the trace anomaly and are shown to be equivalent to findings inferred from Hawking's original calculation based on path integrals using zeta function regularization. Finally, exploiting the corrected temperature and periodicity arguments we also find the modification to the original Schwarzschild metric which captures the effect of quantum corrections.

Noncommutative Schwarzschild Black Hole and Area Law

Using a graphical analysis, we show that for the horizon radius $r_h\gtrsim 4.8\sqrtθ$, the standard semiclassical Bekenstein-Hawking area law for noncommutative Schwarzschild black hole exactly holds for all orders of $θ$. We also give the corrections to the area law to get the exact nature of the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy when $r_h<4.8\sqrtθ$ till the extremal point $r_h=3.0\sqrtθ$.
