Ricci flow on surfaces with cusps

We consider the normalized Ricci flow $\del_t g = (ρ- R)g$ with initial condition a complete metric $g_0$ on an open surface $M$ where $M$ is conformal to a punctured compact Riemann surface and $g_0$ has ends which are asymptotic to hyperbolic cusps. We prove that when $χ(M) < 0$ and $ρ< 0$, the flow $g(t)$ converges exponentially to the unique complete metric of constant Gauss curvature $ρ$ in the conformal class.

Constant Mean Curvature Hypersurfaces Condensing to Geodesic Segments and Rays in Riemannian Manifolds

We construct examples of compact and one-ended constant mean curvature surfaces with large mean curvature in Riemannian manifolds with axial symmetry by gluing together small spheres positioned end-to-end along a geodesic. Such surfaces cannot exist in Euclidean space, but we show that the gradient of the ambient scalar curvature acts as a `friction term' which permits the usual analytic gluing construction to be carried out.

Renormalized area and properly embedded minimal surfaces in hyperbolic 3-manifolds

If $Y$ is a properly embedded minimal surface in a convex cocompact hyperbolic 3-manifold $M$ with boundary at infinity an embedded curve $γ$, then Graham and Witten showed how to define a renormalized area $\calA$ of $Y$ via Hadamard regularization. We study renormalized area as a functional on the space of all such minimal surfaces. This requires a closer examination of these moduli spaces; following White and Coskunuzer, we prove these are Banach manifolds and that the natural map taking $Y$ to $γ$ is Fredholm of index zero and proper, which leads to the existence of a $\ZZ$-valued degree theory for this mapping. We show that $\calA(Y)$ can be expressed as a sum of the Euler characteristic of $Y$ and the total integral of norm squared of the trace-free second fundamental form of $Y$. An extension of renormalized area to a wider class of nonminimal surfaces has a similar formula also involving the integral of mean curvature squared. We prove a formula for the first variation of renormalized area, and characterize the critical points when $M = \HH^3$ and $γ$ has a single component. All of these results have analogues for 4-dimensional Poincaré-Einstein metrics. We conclude by discussing the relationship of $\calA$ to the Willmore functional.

Symmetry for solutions of two-phase semilinear elliptic equations on hyperbolic space

Assume that $f(s) = F'(s)$ where $F$ is a double-well potential. Under certain conditions on the Lipschitz constant of $f$ on $[-1,1]$, we prove that arbitrary bounded global solutions of the semilinear equation $Δu = f(u)$ on hyperbolic space $\HH^n$ must reduce to functions of one variable provided they admit asymptotic boundary values on the infinite boundary of $\HH^n$ which are invariant under a cohomogeneity one subgroup of the group of isometries of $\HH^n$. We also prove existence of these one-dimensional solutions.

Constant curvature foliations on asymptotically hyperbolic spaces

Let $(M,g)$ be an asymptotically hyperbolic manifold with a smooth conformal compactification. We establish a general correspondence between semilinear elliptic equations of scalar curvature type on $\del M$ and Weingarten foliations in some neighbourhood of infinity in $M$. We focus mostly on foliations where each leaf has constant mean curvature, though our results apply equally well to foliations where the leaves have constant $σ_k$-curvature. In particular, we prove the existence of a unique foliation near infinity in any quasi-Fuchsian 3-manifold by surfaces with constant Gauss curvature. There is a subtle interplay between the precise terms in the expansion for $g$ and various properties of the foliation. Unlike other recent works in this area, by Rigger \cite{Ri} and Neves-Tian \cite{NT1}, \cite{NT2}, we work in the context of conformally compact spaces, which are more general than perturbations of the AdS-Schwarzschild space, but we do assume a nondegeneracy condition.

Some remarks on conic degeneration and bending of Poincaré-Einstein metrics

Let $(M,g)$ be a compact Kähler-Einstein manifold with $c_1 > 0$. Denote by $K\to M$ the canonical line-bundle, with total space $X$, and $X_0$ the singular space obtained by blowing down $X$ along its zero section. We employ a construction by Page and Pope and discuss an interesting multi-parameter family of Poincaré--Einstein metrics on $X$. One 1-parameter subfamily $\{g_t\}_{t>0}$ has the property that as $t\searrow 0$, $g_t$ converges to a PE metric $g_0$ on $X_0$ with conic singularity, while $t^{-1}g_t$ converges to a complete Ricci-flat Kähler metric $\hat{g}_0$ on $X$. Another 1-parameters subfamily has an edge singularity along the zero section of $X$, with cone angle depending on the parameter, but has constant conformal infinity. These illustrate some unexpected features of the Poincaré-Einstein moduli space.

Self similar expanding solutions of the planar network flow

We prove the existence of self-similar expanding solutions of the curvature flow on planar networks where the initial configuration is any number of half-lines meeting at the origin. This generalizes recent work by Schnürer and Schulze which treats the case of three half-lines. There are multiple solutions, and these are parametrized by combinatorial objects, namely Steiner trees with respect to a complete negatively curved metric on the unit ball which span $k$ specified points on the boundary at infinity. We also provide a sharp formulation of the regularity of these solutions at $t=0$.

A nonlinear Poisson transform for Einstein metrics on product spaces

We consider the Einstein deformations of the reducible rank two symmetric spaces of noncompact type. If $M$ is the product of any two real, complex, quaternionic or octonionic hyperbolic spaces, we prove that the family of nearby Einstein metrics is parametrized by certain new geometric structures on the Furstenberg boundary of $M$.

The index of Dirac operators on manifolds with fibered boundaries

Let X be a compact manifold with boundary, and suppose that the boundary is the total space of a fibration with base Y and fibre Z. Let D be a generalized Dirac operator associated to a Phi-metric g on X. Under the assumption that D is fully elliptic we prove an index formula for D. The proof is in two steps: first, using results of Melrose and Rochon, we show that the index is unchanged if we pass to a certain b-metric h(s), with s a positive real number. Next we write the b- (i.e. the APS) index formula for h(s); the Phi-index formula follows by analyzing the limiting behaviour as s goes to zero of the two terms in the formula. The interior term is studied directly whereas the adiabatic limit formula for the eta invariant follows from work of Bismut and Cheeger.

Harmonic forms on manifolds with edges

Let $(X,g)$ be a compact Riemannian stratified space with simple edge singularity. Thus a neighbourhood of the singular stratum is a bundle of truncated cones over a lower dimensional compact smooth manifold. We calculate the various polynomially weighted de Rham cohomology spaces of $X$, as well as the associated spaces of harmonic forms. In the unweighted case, this is closely related to recent work of Cheeger and Dai \cite{CD}. Because the metric $g$ is incomplete, this requires a consideration of the various choices of ideal boundary conditions at the singular set. We also calculate the space of $L^2$ harmonic forms for any complete edge metric on the regular part of $X$.

Constant mean curvature hypersurfaces condensing along a submanifold

Given any nondegenerate k-dimensional minimal submanifold K of codimension greater than 1, we prove the existence of families of constant mean curvature submanifolds, with mean curvature varying from one member of the family to another, which `condense' to K. In particular, our result proves the existence of constant mean curvature hypersurfaces with nontrivial topology in any Riemannian manifold.

Hodge cohomology of gravitational instantons

We study the space of L^2 harmonic forms on complete manifolds with metrics of fibred boundary or fibred cusp type. These metrics generalize the geometric structures at infinity of several different well-known classes of metrics, including asymptotically locally Euclidean manifolds, the (known types of) gravitational instantons, and also Poincaré metrics on Q-rank 1 ends of locally symmetric spaces and on the complements of smooth divisors in Kähler manifolds. The answer in all cases is given in terms of intersection cohomology of a stratified compactification of the manifold. The L^2 signature formula implied by our result is closely related to the one proved by Dai [dai] and more generally by Vaillant [Va], and identifies Dai's tau invariant directly in terms of intersection cohomology of differing perversities. This work is also closely related to a recent paper of Carron [Car] and the forthcoming paper of Cheeger and Dai [CD]. We apply our results to a number of examples, gravitational instantons among them, arising in predictions about L^2 harmonic forms in duality theories in string theory.

Foliations by constant mean curvature tubes

Let $Γ$ be a nondegenerate geodesic in a compact Riemannian manifold $M$. We prove the existence of a partial foliation of a neighbourhood of $Γ$ by CMC surfaces which are small perturbations of the geodesic tubes about $Γ$. There are gaps in this foliation, which correspond to a bifurcation phenomenon. Conversely, we also prove, under certain restrictions, that the existence of a partial CMC foliation of this type about a submanifold $Γ$ of any dimension implies that $Γ$ is minimal.

Scattering Theory on SL(3)/SO(3): Connections with Quantum 3-Body Scattering

In this paper we continue our program of extending the methods of geometric scattering theory to encompass the analysis of the Laplacian on symmetric spaces of rank greater than one and their geometric perturbations. Our goal here is to explain how analysis of the Laplacian on the globally symmetric space $\SL(3,\RR)/\SO(3,\RR)$ is very closely related to quantum three-body scattering. In particular, we adapt geometric constructions from recent advances in that field by one of us (A.V.), as well as from our previous work [Mazzeo-Vasy:Resolvents] concerning resolvents for product spaces, to give a precise description of the resolvent and the spherical functions on this space. Amongst the many technical advantages, these methods give results which are uniform up to the walls of the Weyl chambers.

Maskit combinations of Poincare-Einstein metrics

We establish a boundary connected sum theorem for asymptotically hyperbolic Einstein metrics; this requires no nondegeneracy hypothesis. We also show that if the two metrics have scalar positive conformal infinities, then the same is true for this boundary join.

On "many black hole" space-times

We analyze the horizon structure of families of space times obtained by evolving initial data sets containing apparent horizons with several connected components. We show that under certain smallness conditions the outermost apparent horizons will also have several connected components. We further show that, again under a smallness condition, the maximal globally hyperbolic development of the many black hole initial data constructed by Chrusciel and Delay, or of hyperboloidal data of Isenberg, Mazzeo and Pollack, will have an event horizon, the intersection of which with the initial data hypersurface is not connected. This justifies the "many black hole" character of those space-times.

On the topology of vacuum spacetimes

We prove that there are no restrictions on the spatial topology of asymptotically flat solutions of the vacuum Einstein equations in (n+1)-dimensions. We do this by gluing a solution of the vacuum constraint equations on an arbitrary compact manifold to an asymptotically Euclidean solution of the constraints on R^n. For any compact manifold which does not admit a metric of positive scalar curvature, this provides for the existence of asymptotically flat vacuum spacetimes with no maximal slices. Our main theorem is a special case of a more general gluing construction for nondegenerate solutions of the vacuum constraint equations which have some restrictions on the mean curvature, but for which the mean curvature is not necessarily constant. This generalizes the construction [IMP] (gr-qc/0109045), which is restricted to constant mean curvature data.
