Recent advances in the global theory of constant mean curvature surfaces

The theory of complete surfaces of (nonzero) constant mean curvature in $\RR^3$ has progressed markedly in the last decade. This paper surveys a number of these developments in the setting of Alexandrov embedded surfaces; the focus is on gluing constructions and moduli space theory, and the analytic techniques on which these results depend. The last section contains some new results about smoothing the moduli space and about CMC surfaces in asymptotically Euclidean manifolds.

Analytic continuation of the resolvent of the Laplacian on SL(3)/SO(3)

In this paper we continue our program of extending the methods of geometric scattering theory to encompass the analysis of the Laplacian on symmetric spaces of rank greater than one and their geometric perturbations. In our previous work we described the resolvent, and specifically the asymptotic behavior of the Green's function, on SL(3)/SO(3) using methods from three-particle scattering. Here we extend the technique of complex scaling to symmetric spaces to show that the resolvent continues analytically across the spectrum.

Gluing and wormholes for the Einstein constraint equations

We establish a general gluing theorem for constant mean curvature solutions of the vacuum Einstein constraint equations. This allows one to take connected sums of solutions or to glue a handle (wormhole) onto any given solution. Away from this handle region, the initial data sets we produce can be made as close as desired to the original initial data sets. These constructions can be made either when the initial manifold is compact or asymptotically Euclidean or asymptotically hyperbolic, with suitable corresponding conditions on the extrinsic curvature. In the compact setting a mild nondegeneracy condition is required. In the final section of the paper, we list a number ways this construction may be used to produce new types of vacuum spacetimes.

Bifurcating nodoids

All complete, axially symmetric surfaces of constant mean curvature in R^3 lie in the one-parameter family D_tau of Delaunay surfaces. The elements of this family which are embedded are called unduloids; all other elements, which correspond to parameter value tau element in R^-, are immersed and are called nodoids. The unduloids are stable in the sense that the only global constant mean curvature deformations of them are to other elements of this Delaunay family. We prove here that this same property is true for nodoids only when tau is sufficiently close to zero (this corresponds to these surfaces having small `necksizes'). On the other hand, we show that as tau decreases to negative infinity, infinitely many new families of complete, cylindrically bounded constant mean curvature surfaces bifurcate from this Delaunay family. The surfaces in these branches have only a discrete symmetry group.

The conformal theory of Alexandrov embedded constant mean curvature surfaces in $R^3$

We first prove a general gluing theorem which creates new nondegenerate constant mean curvature surfaces by attaching half Delaunay surfaces with small necksize to arbitrary points of any nondegenerate CMC surface. The proof uses the method of Cauchy data matching from \cite{MP}, cf. also \cite{MPP}. In the second part of this paper, we develop the consequences of this result and (at least partially) characterize the image of the map which associates to each complete, Alexandrov-embedded CMC surface with finite topology its associated conformal structure, which is a compact Riemann surface with a finite number of punctures. In particular, we show that this `forgetful' map is surjective when the genus is zero. This proves in particular that the CMC moduli space has a complicated topological structure. These latter results are closely related to recent work of Kusner \cite{Ku}.

Poincare-Einstein metrics and the Schouten tensor

We examine here the space of conformally compact metrics $g$ on the interior of a compact manifold with boundary which have the property that the $k^{th}$ elementary symmetric function of the Schouten tensor $A_g$ is constant. When $k=1$ this is equivalent to the familiar Yamabe problem, and the corresponding metrics are complete with constant negative scalar curvature. We show for every $k$ that the deformation theory for this problem is unobstructed, so in particular the set of conformal classes containing a solution of any one of these equations is open in the space of all conformal classes. We then observe that the common intersection of these solution spaces coincides with the space of conformally compact Einstein metrics, and hence this space is a finite intersection of closed analytic submanifolds.

Curvature and Uniformization

We approach the problem of uniformization of general Riemann surfaces through consideration of the curvature equation, and in particular the problem of constructing Poincaré metrics (i.e., complete metrics of constant negative curvature) by solving the equation $Δu - e^{2u} = K_0(z)$ on general open surfaces. A few other topics are discussed, including boundary behavior of the conformal factor $e^{2u}$ giving the Poincaré metric when the Riemann surface has smoothly bounded compact closure, and also a curvature equation proof of Koebe's disk theorem.

Resolvents and Martin boundaries of product spaces

In this paper we examine the Laplacian on the product of two asymptotically hyperbolic (or conformally compact, as they are often called) spaces from the point of view of geometric scattering theory. In particular, we describe the asymptotic behavior of the resolvent applied to Schwartz functions and that of the resolvent kernel itself. We use these results to find the Martin boundary of the product space. This behaves (nearly) as expected when the factors have no $L^2$ eigenvalues, but it experiences a substantial collapse in the presence of such eigenvalues.

Connected sums of constant mean curvature surfaces in Euclidean 3 space

We establish a general `gluing theorem', which states roughly that if two nondegenerate constant mean curvature surfaces are juxtaposed, so that their tangent planes are parallel and very close to one another, but oppositely oriented, then there is a new constant mean curvature surface quite near to this configuration (in the Hausdorff topology), but which is a topological connected sum of the two surfaces. Here nondegeneracy refers to the invertibility of the linearized mean curvature operator. This paper treats the simplest context for our result namely when the surfaces are compact with nonempty boundary, however the construction applies in the complete, noncompact setting as well. The surfaces we produce here are nondegenerate for generic choices of the free parameters in the construction.

Pseudodifferential operators on manifolds with fibred boundaries

Let $X$ be a compact manifold with boundary. Suppose that the boundary is fibred, $ϕ:\pa X\longrightarrow Y,$ and let $x\in\CI(X)$ be a boundary defining function. This data fixes the space of `fibred cusp' vector fields, consisting of those vector fields $V$ on $X$ satisfying $Vx=O(x^2)$ and which are tangent to the fibres of $ϕ;$ it is a Lie algebra and $\CI(X)$ module. This Lie algebra is quantized to the `small calculus' of pseudodifferential operators $\PsiF*(X).$ Mapping properties including boundedness, regularity, Fredholm condition and symbolic maps are discussed for this calculus. The spectrum of the Laplacian of an `exact fibred cusp' metric is analyzed as is the wavefront set associated to the calculus.

Constant mean curvature surfaces with Delaunay ends

We construct a new class of complete constant mean curvature surfaces in R^3. These are geometrically different than the surfaces constructed by Kapouleas' gluing technique. These are obtained by piecing together half-Delaunay surfaces to the truncations of minimal k-noids. The gluing techniques are new: the surfaces are obtained by matching Cauchy data from the infinite dimensional family of exact solutions of the problem on each of the component pieces. These surfaces are also proved to be nondegenerate in the CMC moduli space.

Dirac operators, heat kernels and microlocal analysis Part II: analytic surgery

Let X be a closed Riemannian manifold and let H\hookrightarrow X be an embedded hypersurface. Let X=X_+ \cup_H X_- be a decomposition of X into two manifolds with boundary, with X_+ \cap X_- = H. In this expository article, surgery -- or gluing -- formulæfor several geometric and spectral invariants associated to a Dirac-type operator ð_X on X are presented. Considered in detail are: the index of ð_X, the index bundle and the determinant bundle associated to a family of such operators, the eta invariant and the analytic torsion. In each case the precise form of the surgery theorems, as well as the different techniques used to prove them, are surveyed.

Refined asymptotics for constant scalar curvature metrics with isolated singularities

We consider the asymptotic behaviour of positive solutions u of the conformal scalar curvature equation, Δu + n(n-2)/4 u^{(n+2)(n-2) = 0, in the neighbourhood of isolated singularities in the standard Euclidean ball. Although asymptotic radial symmetry for such solutions was proved some time ago, by Caffarelli, Gidas and Spruck, we present a much simpler and more geometric derivation of this fact. We also discuss a refinement, showing that any such solution is asymptotic to one of the deformed radial singular solutions. Finally we give some applications of these refined asymptotics, first to computing the global Pohozaev invariants of solutions on the sphere with isolated singularities, and then to the regularity of the moduli space of all such solutions.

Constant scalar curvature metrics with isolated singularities

We extend the results and methods of \cite{MP} to prove the existence of constant positive scalar curvature metrics $g$ which are complete and conformal to the standard metric on $S^N \setminus Λ$, where $Λ$ is a disjoint union of submanifolds of dimensions between 0 and $(N-2)/2$. The existence of solutions with isolated singularities occupies the majority of the paper; their existence was previously established by Schoen \cite{S}, but the proof we give here, based on the techniques of \cite{MP}, is more direct, and provides more information about their geometry. When $Λ$ is discrete we also establish that these solutions are smooth points in the moduli spaces of all such solutions introduced and studied in \cite{MPU1} and \cite{MPU2}

Gluing and moduli for noncompact geometric problems

In this paper we survey a number of recent results concerning the existence and moduli spaces of solutions of various geometric problems on noncompact manifolds. The three problems which we discuss in detail are: I. Complete properly immersed minimal surfaces in $\RR^3$ with finite total curvature. II. Complete embedded surfaces of constant mean curvature in $\RR^3$ with finite topology. III. Complete conformal metrics of constant positive scalar curvature on $M^n \setminus Λ$, where $M^n$ is a compact Riemannian manifold, $n\geq3$ and $\Lam \subset M$ is closed. The existence results we discuss for each of these problems are ones whereby known solutions (sometimes satisfying certain nondegeneracy hypotheses) are glued together to produce new solutions. Although this sort of procedure is quite well-known, there have been some recent advances on which we wish to report here. We also discuss what has been established about the moduli spaces of all solutions to these problems, and report on some work in progress concerning global aspects of these moduli spaces. In the final section we present a new compactness result for the `unmarked moduli spaces' for problem III.

Connected sum constructions for constant scalar curvature metrics

We give a general procedure for gluing together possibly noncompact manifolds of constant scalar curvature which satisfy an extra nondegeneracy hypothesis. Our aim is to provide a simple paradigm for making `analytic' connected sums. In particular, we can easily construct complete metrics of constant positive scalar curvature on the complement of certain configurations of an even number of points on the sphere, which is a special case of Schoen's \cite{S1} well-known, difficult construction. Applications of this construction produces metrics with prescribed asymptotics. In particular, we produce metrics with cylindrical ends, the simplest type of asymptotic behaviour. Solutions on the complement of an infinite number of points are also constructed by an iteration of our construction.

A construction of singular solutions for a semilinear elliptic equation using asymptotic analysis

The aim of this paper is to prove the existence of weak solutions to the equation $Δu + u^p = 0$ which are positive in a domain $Ω\subset {\Bbb R}^N$, vanish at the boundary, and have prescribed isolated singularities. The exponent $p$ is required to lie in the interval $(N/(N-2), (N+2)/(N-2))$. We also prove the existence of solutions to the equation $Δu + u^p = 0$ which are positive in a domain $Ω\subset {\Bbb R}^n$ and which are singular along arbitrary smooth $k$-dimensional submanifolds in the interior of these domains provided $p$ lie in the interval $((n - k)/(n-k-2), (n-k+2)/(n-k-2))$. A particular case is when $p = (n+2)/(n-2)$, in which case solutions correspond to solutions of the singular Yamabe problem. The method used is a mixture of different ingredients used by both authors in their separate constructions of solutions to the singular Yamabe problem, along with a new set of scaling techniques.

The Moduli Space of Complete Embedded Constant Mean Curvature Surfaces

We examine the space of surfaces in $\RR^{3}$ which are complete, properly embedded and have nonzero constant mean curvature. These surfaces are noncompact provided we exclude the case of the round sphere. We prove that the space $\Mk$ of all such surfaces with $k$ ends (where surfaces are identified if they differ by an isometry of $\RR^{3}$) is locally a real analytic variety. When the linearization of the quasilinear elliptic equation specifying mean curvature equal to one has no $L^2-$nullspace we prove that $\Mk$ is locally the quotient of a real analytic manifold of dimension $3k-6$ by a finite group (iė\. a real analytic orbifold), for $k\geq 3$. This finite group is the isotropy subgroup of the surface in the group of Euclidean motions. It is of interest to note that the dimension of $\Mk$ is independent of the topology of the underlying punctured Riemann surface to which $\Sig$ is conformally equivalent. These results also apply to hypersurfaces of $\HH^{n+1}$ with nonzero constant mean curvature greater than that of a horosphere and whose ends are cylindrically bounded.
