Stability of stationary reaction diffusion-degenerate Nagumo fronts I: spectral analysis

This paper establishes the spectral stability of monotone, stationary front solutions for reaction-diffusion equations where the reaction function is of Nagumo (or bistable) type and with diffusion coefficients which are density dependent and degenerate at zero (one of the equilibrium points of the reaction). These stationary profiles connect the non-degenerate equilibrium point with the degenerate state at zero, they are monotone, and arrive to the degenerate state at a finite point. They are neither sharp nor smooth. The degeneracy of the diffusion precludes the application of standard techniques to locate the essential spectrum of the linearized operator around the wave in the energy space $L^2$. This difficulty is overcome with a suitable partition of the spectrum, the analysis of singular sequences, a generalized convergence of operators technique and refined energy estimates. It is shown that the $L^2$-spectrum of the linearized operator around the front is real and with a spectral gap, that is, a positive distance between the imaginary axis and the rest of the spectrum, with the exception of the origin. Moreover, the origin is a simple isolated eigenvalue, associated to the derivative of the profile as eigenfunction (the translation eigenvalue). Finally, it is shown that the linearization generates an analytic semigroup that decays exponentially outside a one-dimensional eigenspace associated to the zero eigenvalue.

Layer dynamics for the Allen-Cahn equation with nonlinear phase-dependent diffusion

The goal of this paper is to describe the metastable dynamics of the solutions to the reaction-diffusion equation with nonlinear phase-dependent diffusion $u_t=\varepsilon^2(D(u)u_x)_x-f(u)$, where $D$ is a strictly positive function and $f$ is a bistable reaction term. We derive a system of ordinary differential equations describing the slow evolution of the metastable states, whose existence has been proved by Folino et al. (Z. Angew. Math. Phys., 2020). Such a system generalizes the one derived in the pioneering work of Carr and Pego (Comm. Pure Appl. Math., 1989) to describe the metastable dynamics for the classical Allen-Cahn equation, which corresponds to the particular case $D\equiv1$.

Stability properties of solutions to convection-reaction equations with nonlinear diffusion

In this paper we study a convection-reaction-diffusion equation of the form \begin{equation*} u_t=\varepsilon(h(u)u_x)_x-f(u)_x+f'(u), \quad t>0, \end{equation*} with a nonlinear diffusion in a bounded interval of the real line. In particular, we first focus our attention on the existence of stationary solutions with at most one zero inside the interval, studying their behavior with respect to the viscosity coefficient $\varepsilon>0$ and their stability/instability properties. Then, we investigate the large time behavior of the solutions for finite times and the asymptotic regime. We also show numerically that, for a particular class of initial data, the so-called metastable behavior occurs, meaning that the time-dependent solution persists for an exponentially long (with respect to $\varepsilon$) time in a transition non-stable phase, before converging to a stable configuration.

Instability of periodic waves for the Korteweg-de Vries-Burgers equation with monostable source

In this paper, it is proved that the KdV-Burgers equation with a monostable source term of Fisher-KPP type has small-amplitude periodic traveling wave solutions with finite fundamental period. These solutions emerge from a subcritical local Hopf bifurcation around a critical value of the wave speed. Moreover, it is shown that these periodic waves are spectrally unstable as solutions to the PDE, that is, the Floquet (continuous) spectrum of the linearization around each periodic wave intersects the unstable half plane of complex values with positive real part. To that end, classical perturbation theory for linear operators is applied in order to prove that the spectrum of the linearized operator around the wave can be approximated by that of a constant coefficient operator around the zero solution, which intersects the unstable complex half plane.

Minimization of a Ginzburg-Landau functional with mean curvature operator in 1-D

The aim of this paper is to investigate the minimization problem related to a Ginzburg-Landau energy functional, where in particular a nonlinear diffusion of mean curvature-type is considered, together with a classical double well potential. A careful analysis of the corresponding Euler-Lagrange equation, equipped with natural boundary conditions and mass constraint, leads to the existence of an unique Maxwell solution, namely a monotone increasing solution obtained for small diffusion and close to the so-called Maxwell point. Then, it is shown that this particular solution (and its reversal) has least energy among all the stationary points satisfying the given mass constraint. Moreover, as the viscosity parameter tends to zero, it converges to the increasing (decreasing for the reversal) single interface solution, namely the constrained minimizer of the corresponding energy without diffusion. Connections with Cahn-Hilliard models, obtained in terms of variational derivatives of the total free energy considered here, are also presented.

Layered patterns in reaction-diffusion models with Perona-Malik diffusions

In this paper we deal with a reaction-diffusion equation in a bounded interval of the real line with a nonlinear diffusion of Perona-Malik's type and a balanced bistable reaction term. Under very general assumptions, we study the persistence of layered solutions, showing that it strongly depends on the behavior of the reaction term close to the stable equilibria $\pm1$, described by a parameter $θ>1$. If $θ\in(1,2)$, we prove existence of steady states oscillating (and touching) $\pm1$, called $compactons$, while in the case $θ=2$ we prove the presence of $metastable$ $solutions$, namely solutions with a transition layer structure which is maintained for an exponentially long time. Finally, for $θ>2$, solutions with an unstable transition layer structure persist only for an algebraically long time.

Spectral stability of weak dispersive shock profiles for quantum hydrodynamics with nonlinear viscosity

This paper studies the stability of weak dispersive shock profiles for a quantum hydrodynamics system in one space dimension with nonlinear viscosity and dispersive (quantum) effects due to a Bohm potential. It is shown that, if the shock amplitude is sufficiently small, then the profiles are spectrally stable. This analytical result is consistent with numerical estimations of the location of the spectrum (Lattanzio, Zhelyazov, Math. Models Methods Appl. Sci. 31, 2021). The proof is based on energy estimates at the spectral level, on the choice of an appropriate weighted energy function for the perturbations involving both the dispersive potential and the nonlinear viscosity, and on the montonicity of the dispersive profiles in the small-amplitude regime.

Spectral stability of small-amplitude dispersive shocks in quantum hydrodynamics with viscosity

A compressible viscous-dispersive Euler system in one space dimension in the context of quantum hydrodynamics is considered. The dispersive term is due to quantum effects described through the Bohm potential and the viscosity term is of linear type. It is shown that small-amplitude viscous-dispersive shock profiles for the system under consideration are spectrally stable, proving in this fashion a previous numerical observation by Lattanzio et al. (Phys. D 402, 2020, p. 132222; Appl. Math. Comput. 385, 2020, p. 125450). The proof is based on spectral energy estimates which profit from the monotonicty of the profiles in the small-amplitude regime.

On a generalized Cahn-Hilliard model with p-Laplacian

A generalized Cahn-Hilliard model in a bounded interval of the real line with no-flux boundary conditions is considered. The label "generalized" refers to the fact that we consider a concentration dependent mobility, the $p$-Laplace operator with $p>1$ and a double well potential of the form $F(u)=\frac{1}{2θ}|1-u^2|^θ$, with $θ>1$; these terms replace, respectively, the constant mobility, the linear Laplace operator and the $C^2$ potential satisfying $F"(\pm1)>0$, which are typical of the standard Cahn-Hilliard model. After investigating the associated stationary problem and highlighting the differences with the standard results, we focus the attention on the long time dynamics of solutions when $θ\geq p>1$. In the $critical$ $θ=p>1$, we prove $exponentially$ $slow$ $motion$ of profiles with a transition layer structure, thus extending the well know results of the standard model, where $θ=p=2$; conversely, in the $supercritical$ case $θ>p>1$, we prove $algebraic$ $slow$ $motion$ of layered profiles.

Slow dynamics for the hyperbolic Cahn-Hilliard equation in one space dimension

The aim of this paper is to study the metastable properties of the solutions to a hyperbolic relaxation of the classic Cahn-Hilliard equation in one space dimension, subject to either Neumann or Dirichlet boundary conditions. To perform this goal, we make use of an "energy approach", already proposed for various evolution PDEs, including the Allen-Cahn and the Cahn-Hilliard equations. In particular, we shall prove that certain solutions maintain a {\it $N$-transition layer structure} for a very long time, thus proving their metastable dynamics. More precisely, we will show that, for an exponentially long time, such solutions are very close to piecewise constant functions assuming only the minimal points of the potential, with a finitely number of transition points, which move with an exponentially small velocity.

Metastable dynamics for hyperbolic variations of the Allen-Cahn equation

Metastable dynamics of a hyperbolic variation of the Allen-Cahn equation with homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions are considered. Using the "dynamical approach" proposed by Carr-Pego [10] and Fusco-Hale [19] to study slow-evolution of solutions in the classic parabolic case, we prove existence and persistence of metastable patterns for an exponentially long time. In particular, we show the existence of an "approximately invariant" $N$-dimensional manifold $\mathcal{M}_0$ for the hyperbolic Allen-Cahn equation: if the initial datum is in a tubular neighborhood of $\mathcal{M}_0$, the solution remains in such neighborhood for an exponentially long time. Moreover, the solution has $N$ transition layers and the transition points move with exponentially small velocity. In addition, we determine the explicit form of a system of ordinary differential equations describing the motion of the transition layers and we analyze the differences with the corresponding motion valid for the parabolic case.

Long time dynamics of solutions to $p$-Laplacian diffusion problems with bistable reaction terms

This paper establishes the emergence of slowly moving transition layer solutions for the $p$-Laplacian (nonlinear) evolution equation, \[ u_t = \varepsilon^p(|u_x|^{p-2}u_x)_x - F'(u), \qquad x \in (a,b), \; t > 0, \] where $\varepsilon>0$ and $p>1$ are constants, driven by the action of a family of double-well potentials of the form \[ F(u)=\frac{1}{2n} |1-u^2|^{n}, \] indexed by $n>1$, $n\in\mathbb{R}$ with minima at two pure phases $u = \pm 1$. The equation is endowed with initial conditions and boundary conditions of Neumann type. It is shown that interface layers, or solutions which initially are equal to $\pm 1$ except at a finite number of thin transitions of width $\varepsilon$, persist for an exponentially long time in the critical case with $n=p$, and for an algebraically long time in the supercritical (or degenerate) case with $n > p$. For that purpose, energy bounds for a renormalized effective energy potential of Ginzburg-Landau type are established. In contrast, in the subcritical case with $n<p$, the transition layer solutions are stationary.

Long-time behavior of solutions to the generalized Allen-Cahn model with degenerate diffusivity

The generalized Allen-Cahn equation, \[ u_t=\varepsilon^2(D(u)u_x)_x-\frac{\varepsilon^2}2D'(u)u_x^2-F'(u), \] with nonlinear diffusion, $D = D(u)$, and potential, $F = F(u)$, of the form \[ D(u) = |1-u^2|^{m}, \quad \text{or} \quad D(u) = |1-u|^{m}, \quad m >1, \] and \[ F(u)=\frac{1}{2n}|1-u^2|^{n}, \qquad n\geq2, \] respectively, is studied. These choices correspond to a reaction function that can be derived from a double well potential, and to a generalized degenerate diffusivity coefficient depending on the density $u$ that vanishes at one or at the two wells, $u = \pm 1$. It is shown that interface layer solutions that are equal to $\pm 1$ except at a finite number of thin transitions of width $\varepsilon$ persist for an either exponentially or algebraically long time, depending upon the interplay between the exponents $n$ and $m$. For that purpose, energy bounds for a renormalized effective energy potential of Ginzburg-Landau type are derived.

Metastable dynamics for a hyperbolic variant of the mass conserving Allen-Cahn equation in one space dimension

In this paper, we consider some hyperbolic variants of the mass conserving Allen-Cahn equation, which is a nonlocal reaction-diffusion equation, introduced (as a simpler alternative to the Cahn-Hilliard equation) to describe phase separation in binary mixtures. In particular, we focus our attention on the metastable dynamics of some solutions to the equation in a bounded interval of the real line with homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions. It is shown that the evolution of profiles with $N+1$ transition layers is very slow and we derive a system of ODEs, which describes the exponentially slow motion of the layers. A comparison with the classical Allen-Cahn and Cahn-Hilliard equations and theirs hyperbolic variations is also performed.

Exponentially slow motion of interface layers for the one-dimensional Allen-Cahn equation with nonlinear phase-dependent diffusivity

This paper considers a one-dimensional generalized Allen-Cahn equation of the form \[ u_t = \varepsilon^2 (D(u)u_x)_x - f(u), \] where $\varepsilon>0$ is constant, $D=D(u)$ is a positive, uniformly bounded below diffusivity coefficient that depends on the phase field $u$ and $f(u)$ is a reaction function that can be derived from a double-well potential with minima at two pure phases $u = α$ and $u = β$. It is shown that interface layers (namely, solutions that are equal to $α$ or $β$ except at a finite number of thin transitions of width $\varepsilon$) persist for an exponentially long time proportional to $\exp(C/\varepsilon)$, where $C > 0$ is a constant. In other words, the emergence and persistence of \emph{metastable patterns} for this class of equations is established. For that purpose, we prove energy bounds for a renormalized effective energy potential of Ginzburg-Landau type. Numerical simulations, which confirm the analytical results, are also provided.

Metastability and layer dynamics for the hyperbolic relaxation of the Cahn-Hilliard equation

The goal of this paper is to accurately describe the metastable dynamics of the solutions to the hyperbolic relaxation of the Cahn-Hilliard equation in a bounded interval of the real line, subject to homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions. We prove the existence of an "approximately invariant manifold" $\mathcal{M}_0$ for such boundary value problem, that is we construct a narrow channel containing $\mathcal{M}_0$ and satisfying the following property: a solution starting from the channel evolves very slowly and leaves the channel only after an exponentially long time. Moreover, in the channel the solution has a "transition layer structure" and we derive a system of ODEs, which accurately describes the slow dynamics of the layers. A comparison with the layer dynamics of the classic Cahn-Hilliard equation is also performed.

Stability properties and dynamics of solutions to viscous conservation laws with mean curvature operator

In this paper we study the long time dynamics of the solutions to the initial-boundary value problem for a scalar conservation law with a saturating nonlinear diffusion. After discussing the existence of a unique stationary solution and its asymptotic stability, we focus our attention on the phenomenon of 'metastability', whereby the time-dependent solution develops into a layered function in a relatively short time, and subsequently approaches a steady state in a very long time interval. Numerical simulations illustrate the results.

Metastable patterns for a reaction-diffusion model with mean curvature-type diffusion

Reaction-diffusion equations are widely used to describe a variety of phenomena such as pattern formation and front propagation in biological, chemical and physical systems. In the one-dimensional model with a balanced bistable reaction function, it is well-known that there is persistence of metastable patterns for an exponentially long time, i.e. a time proportional to $\exp(C/\e)$ where $C,\e$ are strictly positive constants and $\e^2$ is the diffusion coefficient. In this paper, we extend such results to the case when the linear diffusion flux is substituted by the mean curvature operator both in Euclidean and Lorentz--Minkowski spaces. More precisely, for both models, we prove existence of metastable states which maintain a transition layer structure for an exponentially long time and we show that the speed of the layers is exponentially small. Numerical simulations, which confirm the analytical results, are also provided.
