Metastable patterns for a reaction-diffusion model with mean curvature-type diffusion

Reaction-diffusion equations are widely used to describe a variety of phenomena such as pattern formation and front propagation in biological, chemical and physical systems. In the one-dimensional model with a balanced bistable reaction function, it is well-known that there is persistence of metastable patterns for an exponentially long time, i.e. a time proportional to $\exp(C/\e)$ where $C,\e$ are strictly positive constants and $\e^2$ is the diffusion coefficient. In this paper, we extend such results to the case when the linear diffusion flux is substituted by the mean curvature operator both in Euclidean and Lorentz--Minkowski spaces. More precisely, for both models, we prove existence of metastable states which maintain a transition layer structure for an exponentially long time and we show that the speed of the layers is exponentially small. Numerical simulations, which confirm the analytical results, are also provided.

On the speed rate of convergence of solutions to conservation laws with nonlinear diffusions

In this paper we analyze the long-time behavior of solutions to conservation laws with nonlinear diffusion terms of different types: saturating dissipation (monotone and non monotone) and singular nonlinear diffusions are considered. In particular, the cases of mean curvature-type diffusions both in the Euclidean space and in Lorentz-Minkowski space enter in our framework. After dealing with existence and stability of monotone steady states in a bounded interval of the real line with Dirichlet boundary conditions, we discuss the speed rate of convergence to the asymptotic limit as $t\to+\infty$. Finally, in the particular case of a Burgers flux function, we show that the solutions exhibit the phenomenon of metastability.

Slow motion for one-dimensional nonlinear damped hyperbolic Allen-Cahn systems

We consider a nonlinear damped hyperbolic reaction-diffusion system in a bounded interval of the real line with homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions and we study the metastable dynamics of the solutions. Using an "energy approach" introduced by Bronsard and Kohn [CPAM 1990] to study slow motion for Allen-Cahn equation and improved by Grant [SIAM J. Math. Anal. 1995] in the study of Cahn-Morral systems, we improve and extend to the case of systems the results valid for the hyperbolic Allen-Cahn equation. In particular, we study the limiting behavior of the solutions as $\varepsilon\to0^+$, where $\varepsilon^2$ is the diffusion coefficient, and we prove existence and persistence of metastable states for a time $T_\varepsilon>\exp(A/\varepsilon)$. Such metastable states have a transition layer structure and the transition layers move with exponentially small velocity.

Motion of interfaces for a damped hyperbolic Allen-Cahn equation

Consider the Allen-Cahn equation $u_t=\varepsilon^2Δu-F'(u)$, where $F$ is a double well potential with wells of equal depth, located at $\pm1$. There are a lot of papers devoted to the study of the limiting behavior of the solutions as the diffusion coefficient $\varepsilon\to0^+$, and it is well known that, if the initial datum $u(\cdot,0)$ takes the values $+1$ and $-1$ in the regions $Ω_+$ and $Ω_-$, then the "interface" connecting $Ω_+$ and $Ω_-$ moves with normal velocity equal to the sum of its principal curvatures, i.e. the interface moves by mean curvature flow. This paper concerns with the motion of the inteface for a damped hyperbolic Allen-Cahn equation, in a bounded domain of $\mathbb{R}^n$, for $n=2$ or $n=3$. In particular, we focus the attention on radially simmetric solutions, studying in detail the differences with the classic parabolic case, and we prove that, under appropriate assumptions on the initial data $u(\cdot,0)$ and $u_t(\cdot,0)$, the interface moves by mean curvature as $\varepsilon\to0^+$ also in the hyperbolic framework.

Slow motion for a hyperbolic variation of Allen-Cahn equation in one space dimension

The aim of this paper is to prove that, for specific initial data $(u_0,u_1)$ and with homogeneous Neumann boundary conditions, the solution of the IBVP for a hyperbolic variation of Allen-Cahn equation on the interval $[a,b]$ shares the well-known dynamical metastability valid for the classical parabolic case. In particular, using the "energy approach" proposed by Bronsard and Kohn [8], if $\varepsilon\ll 1$ is the diffusion coefficient, we show that in a time scale of order $\varepsilon^{-k}$ nothing happens and the solution maintains the same number of transitions of its initial datum $u_0$. The novelty consists mainly in the role of the initial velocity $u_1$, which may create or eliminate transitions in later times. Numerical experiments are also provided in the particular case of the Allen-Cahn equation with relaxation.
