The magic square of reflections and rotations

We show how Coxeter's work implies a bijection between complex reflection groups of rank two and real reflection groups in $O(3)$. We also consider this magic square of reflections and rotations in the framework of Clifford algebras: we give an interpretation using (s)pin groups and explore these groups in small dimensions.

McKay quivers and Lusztig algebras of some finite groups

We are interested in the McKay quiver $Γ(G)$ and skew group rings $A*G$, where $G$ is a finite subgroup of $\mathrm{GL}(V)$, where $V$ is a finite dimensional vector space over a field $K$, and $A$ is a $K-G$-algebra. These skew group rings appear in Auslander's version of the McKay correspondence. In the first part of this paper we consider complex reflection groups $G \subseteq \mathrm{GL}(V)$ and find a combinatorial method, making use of Young diagrams, to construct the McKay quivers for the groups $G(r,p,n)$. We first look at the case $G(1,1,n)$, which is isomorphic to the symmetric group $S_n$, followed by $G(r,1,n)$ for $r >1$. Then, using Clifford theory, we can determine the McKay quiver for any $G(r,p,n)$ and thus for all finite irreducible complex reflection groups up to finitely many exceptions. In the second part of the paper we consider a more conceptual approach to McKay quivers of arbitrary finite groups: we define the Lusztig algebra $\widetilde A(G)$ of a finite group $G \subseteq \mathrm{GL}(V)$, which is Morita equivalent to the skew group ring $A*G$. This description gives us an embedding of the basic algebra Morita equivalent to $A*G$ into a matrix algebra over $A$.

Tilting theory for Gorenstein rings in dimension one

For a $Z$-graded Gorenstein ring $R$, we study the stable category $CM^ZR$ of $Z$-graded maximal Cohen-Macaulay $R$-modules, which is canonically triangle equivalent to the singularity category of Buchweitz and Orlov. Its thick subcategory given as the stable category of $CM_0^ZR$ is central in representation theory since it enjoys Auslander-Reiten-Serre duality and has almost split triangles. In the case $dim R=1$, we prove that the stable category of $CM_0^ZR$ always admits a silting object, and that it admits a tilting object if and only if either $R$ is regular or the $a$-invariant of $R$ is non-negative.

A McKay correspondence for reflection groups

We construct a noncommutative desingularization of the discriminant of a finite reflection group $G$ as a quotient of the skew group ring $A=S*G$. If $G$ is generated by order two reflections, then this quotient identifies with the endomorphism ring of the reflection arrangement $\mathcal{A}(G)$ viewed as a module over the coordinate ring $S^G/(Δ)$ of the discriminant of $G$. This yields, in particular, a correspondence between the nontrivial irreducible representations of $G$ to certain maximal Cohen--Macaulay modules over the coordinate ring $S^G/(Δ)$. These maximal Cohen--Macaulay modules are precisely the nonisomorphic direct summands of the coordinate ring of the reflection arrangement $\mathcal{A} (G)$ viewed as a module over $S^G/(Δ)$. We identify some of the corresponding matrix factorizations, namely the so-called logarithmic (co-)residues of the discriminant.

Noncommutative resolutions of discriminants

We give an introduction to the McKay correspondence and its connection to quotients of $\mathbb{C}^n$ by finite reflection groups. This yields a natural construction of noncommutative resolutions of the discriminants of these reflection groups. This paper is an extended version of E.F.'s talk with the same title delivered at the ICRA.

Lifting free divisors

Let $φ:X\to S$ be a morphism between smooth complex analytic spaces, and let $f=0$ define a free divisor on $S$. We prove that if the deformation space $T^1_{X/S}$ of $φ$ is a Cohen-Macaulay $\mathcal{O}_X$-module of codimension 2, and all of the logarithmic vector fields for $f=0$ lift via $φ$, then $f\circ φ=0$ defines a free divisor on $X$; this is generalized in several directions. Among applications we recover a result of Mond-van Straten, generalize a construction of Buchweitz-Conca, and show that a map $φ:\mathbb{C}^{n+1}\to \mathbb{C}^n$ with critical set of codimension $2$ has a $T^1_{X/S}$ with the desired properties. Finally, if $X$ is a representation of a reductive complex algebraic group $G$ and $φ$ is the algebraic quotient $X\to S=X// G$ with $X// G$ smooth, we describe sufficient conditions for $T^1_{X/S}$ to be Cohen-Macaulay of codimension $2$. In one such case, a free divisor on $\mathbb{C}^{n+1}$ lifts under the operation of "castling" to a free divisor on $\mathbb{C}^{n(n+1)}$, partially generalizing work of Granger-Mond-Schulze on linear free divisors. We give several other examples of such representations.

Moore Matrices and Ulrich Bundles on an Elliptic Curve

We give normal forms of determinantal representations of a smooth projective plane cubic in terms of Moore matrices. Building on this, we exhibit matrix factorizations for all indecomposable vector bundles of rank 2 and degree 0 without nonzero sections, also called Ulrich bundles, on such curves.

On the derived category of Grassmannians in arbitrary characteristic

In this paper we consider Grassmannians in arbitrary characteristic. Generalizing Kapranov's well-known characteristic-zero results we construct dual exceptional collections on them (which are however not strong) as well as a tilting bundle. We show that this tilting bundle has a quasi-hereditary endomorphism ring and we identify the standard, costandard, projective and simple modules of the latter.

Non-commutative desingularization of determinantal varieties, II: Arbitrary minors

In our paper "Non-commutative desingularization of determinantal varieties, I" we constructed and studied non-commutative resolutions of determinantal varieties defined by maximal minors. At the end of the introduction we asserted that the results could be generalized to determinantal varieties defined by non-maximal minors, at least in characteristic zero. In this paper we prove the existence of non-commutative resolutions in the general case in a manner which is still characteristic free, and carry out the explicit description by generators and relations in characteristic zero. As an application of our results we prove that there is a fully faithful embedding between the bounded derived categories of the two canonical (commutative) resolutions of a determinantal variety, confirming a well-known conjecture of Bondal and Orlov in this special case.

Strong global dimension of commutative rings and schemes

The strong global dimension of a ring is the supremum of the length of perfect complexes that are indecomposable in the derived category. In this note we characterize the noetherian commutative rings that have finite strong global dimension. We also give a similar characterization for arbitrary noetherian schemes.

New free divisors from old

We present several methods to construct or identify families of free divisors such as those annihilated by many Euler vector fields, including binomial free divisors, or divisors with triangular discriminant matrix. We show how to create families of quasihomogeneous free divisors through the chain rule or by extending them into the tangent bundle. We also discuss whether general divisors can be extended to free ones by adding components and show that adding a normal crossing divisor to a smooth one will not succeed.

An Index Theorem for Modules on a Hypersurface Singularity

A topological interpretation of Hochster's Theta pairing of two modules on a hypersurface ring is given in terms of linking numbers. This generalizes results of M. Hochster and proves a conjecture of J. Steenbrink. As a corollary we get that the Theta pairing vanishes for isolated hypersurface singularities in an odd number of variables, as was conjectured by H. Dao.

Hochschild (Co-)Homology of Schemes with Tilting Object

Given a $k$--scheme $X$ that admits a tilting object $T$, we prove that the Hochschild (co-)homology of $X$ is isomorphic to that of $A= End_{X}(T)$. We treat more generally the relative case when $X$ is flat over an affine scheme $Y=\Spec R$ and the tilting object satisfies an appropriate Tor-independence condition over $R$. Among applications, Hochschild homology of $X$ over $Y$ is seen to vanish in negative degrees, smoothness of $X$ over $Y$ is shown to be equivalent to that of $A$ over $R$, and for $X$ a smooth projective scheme we obtain that Hochschild homology is concentrated in degree zero. Using the Hodge decomposition \cite{BFl2} of Hochschild homology in characteristic zero, for $X$ smooth over $Y$ the Hodge groups $H^{q}(X,Ω_{X/Y}^{p})$ vanish for $p < q$, while in the absolute case they even vanish for $p\neq q$. We illustrate the results for crepant resolutions of quotient singularities, in particular for the total space of the canonical bundle on projective space.

Non-commutative desingularization of determinantal varieties, I

We show that determinantal varieties defined by maximal minors of a generic matrix have a non-commutative desingularization, in that we construct a maximal Cohen-Macaulay module over such a variety whose endomorphism ring is Cohen-Macaulay and has finite global dimension. In the case of the determinant of a square matrix, this gives a non-commutative crepant resolution.

Class and rank of differential modules

A differential module is a module equipped with a square-zero endomorphism. This structure underpins complexes of modules over rings, as well as differential graded modules over graded rings. We establish lower bounds on the class--a substitute for the length of a free complex--and on the rank of a differential module in terms of invariants of its homology. These results specialize to basic theorems in commutative algebra and algebraic topology. One instance is a common generalization of the equicharacteristic case of the New Intersection Theorem of Hochster, Peskine, P. Roberts, and Szpiro, concerning complexes over noetherian commutative rings, and of a theorem of G. Carlsson on differential graded modules over graded polynomial rings.

Low-dimensional Singularities with Free Divisors as Discriminants

We present versal complex analytic families, over a smooth base and of fibre dimension zero, one, or two, where the discriminant constitutes a free divisor. These families include finite flat maps, versal deformations of reduced curve singularities, and versal deformations of Gorenstein surface singularities in C^5. It is shown that such free divisors often admit a "fast normalization", obtained by a single application of the Grauert-Remmert normalization algorithm. For a particular Gorenstein surface singularity in C^5, namely the simple elliptic singularity of type \tilde A_4, we exhibit an explicit discriminant matrix and show that the slice of the discriminant for a fixed j-invariant is the cone over the dual variety of an elliptic curve.

The global decomposition theorem for Hochschild (co-)homology of singular spaces via the Atiyah-Chern character

We generalize the decomposition theorem of Hochschild, Kostant and Rosenberg for Hochschild (co-)homology to arbitrary morphisms between complex spaces or schemes over a field of characteristic zero. To be precise, we show that for each such morphism, the Hochschild complex, as introduced in math.AG/0606593, decomposes naturally in the derived category into the direct sum of the derived symmetric powers of the shifted cotangent complex, a result due to Quillen in the affine case. Even in the affine case, our proof is new and provides further information. It shows that the decomposition is given explicitly and naturally by the universal Atiyah-Chern character, the exponential of the universal Atiyah class. We further use the decomposition theorem to show that the semiregularity map for perfect complexes factors through Hochschild homology and, in turn, factors the Atiyah-Hochschild character through the characteristic homomorphism from Hochschild cohomology to the graded centre of the derived category.
