Factoring the Adjoint and Maximal Cohen--Macaulay Modules over the Generic Determinant

A question of Bergman asks whether the adjoint of the generic square matrix over a field can be factored nontrivially as a product of square matrices. We show that such factorizations indeed exist over any coefficient ring when the matrix has even size. Establishing a correspondence between such factorizations and extensions of maximal Cohen--Macaulay modules over the generic determinant, we exhibit all factorizations where one of the factors has determinant equal to the generic determinant. The classification shows not only that the Cohen--Macaulay representation theory of the generic determinant is wild in the tame-wild dichotomy, but that it is quite wild: even in rank two, the isomorphism classes cannot be parametrized by a finite-dimensional variety over the coefficients. We further relate the factorization problem to the multiplicative structure of the $\Ext$--algebra of the two nontrivial rank-one maximal Cohen--Macaulay modules and determine it completely.

Linear free divisors and quiver representations

Linear free divisors are free divisors, in the sense of K.Saito, with linear presentation matrix (example: normal crossing divisors). Using techniques of deformation theory on representations of quivers, we exhibit families of linear free divisors as discriminants in representation spaces for real Schur roots of a finite quiver. We review some basic material on quiver representations, and explain in detail how to verify whether the discriminant is a free divisor and how to determine its components and their equations, using techniques of A. Schofield. As an illustration, the linear free divisors that arise as the discriminant from the highest roots of Dynkin quivers of type E7 and E8 are treated explicitly.

Multiplicative structures for Koszul algebras

Let $Λ=kQ/I$ be a Koszul algebra over a field $k$, where $Q$ is a finite quiver. An algorithmic method for finding a minimal projective resolution $\mathbb{F}$ of the graded simple modules over $Λ$ is given in Green-Solberg. This resolution is shown to have a "comultiplicative" structure in Green-Hartman-Marcos-Solberg, and this is used to find a minimal projective resolution $\mathbb{P}$ of $Λ$ over the enveloping algebra $Λ^e$. Using these results we show that the multiplication in the Hochschild cohomology ring of $Ł$ relative to the resolution $\mathbb{P}$ is given as a cup product and also provide a description of this product. This comultiplicative structure also yields the structure constants of the Koszul dual of $Ł$ with respect to a canonical basis over $k$ associated to the resolution $\mathbb{F}$. The natural map from the Hochschild cohomology to the Koszul dual of $Λ$ is shown to be surjective onto the graded centre of the Koszul dual.

The adjoint of an even size matrix factors

We show that the adjoint matrix of a generic square matrix of even size can be factored nontrivially, answering a question of G. Bergman. This note is a preliminary report on work in progress.

Morita Contexts, Idempotents, and Hochschild Cohomology - with Applications to Invariant Rings -

We investigate how to compare Hochschild cohomology of algebras related by a Morita context. Interpreting a Morita context as a ring with distinguished idempotent, the key ingredient for such a comparison is shown to be the grade of the Morita defect, the quotient of the ring modulo the ideal generated by the idempotent. Along the way, we show that the grade of the stable endomorphism ring as a module over the endomorphism ring controls vanishing of higher groups of selfextensions, and explain the relation to various forms of the Generalized Nakayama Conjecture for Noetherian algebras. As applications of our approach we explore to what extent Hochschild cohomology of an invariant ring coincides with the invariants of the Hochschild cohomology.

A Semiregularity Map for Modules and Applications to Deformations

This paper contains the details and complete proofs of our earlier announcement in math.AG/9907004 . We construct a general semiregularity map for algebraic cycles as asked for by S. Bloch in 1972. The existence of such a semiregularity map has well known consequences for the structure of the Hilbert scheme and for the variational Hodge conjecture. Aside from generalizing and extending considerably previously known results in this direction, we give new applications to deformations of modules that encompass, for example, results of Artamkin and Mukai. The formation of the semiregularity map here involves powers of the cotangent complex, Atiyah classes, and trace maps, and is defined not only for subspaces of manifolds but for perfect complexes on arbitrary complex spaces. It generalizes in particular Illusie's treatment of the Chern character to the analytic context and specializes to Bloch's earlier description of the semiregularity map for locally complete intersections as well as to the infinitesimal Abel-Jacobi map for submanifolds.

Hilbert-Kunz functions of cubic curves and surfaces

We determine the Hilbert-Kunz function of plane elliptic curves in odd characteristic, as well as over arbitrary fields the generalized Hilbert-Kunz functions of nodal cubic curves. Together with results of K. Pardue and P. Monsky, this completes the list of Hilbert-Kunz functions of plane cubics. Combining these results with the calculation of the (generalized) Hilbert-Kunz function of Cayley's cubic surface, it follows that in each degree and over any field of positive characteristic there are curves resp. surfaces taking on the minimally possible Hilbert-Kunz multiplicity.

Laurent coefficients and Ext of finite graded modules

Let $R=\bigoplus_{n\ges0}R_n$ be a graded commutative ring generated over a field $K=R_0$ by homogeneous elements $x_1,\dots,x_e$ of positive degrees $d_1,\dots,d_e$. The Hilbert-Serre Theorem shows that for each finite graded $R$--module $M=\bigoplus_{n\in\BZ}M_n$ the {\it Hilbert series\/} $\sum_{n\in\BZ}(\rank_K M_n)t^n$ is the Laurent expansion around $0$ of a rational function $$ H_M(t)=\frac{q_M(t)}{\prod_{i=1}^e(1-t^{d_i})} $$ with $q_M(t)\in\BZ[t,\ti]$. We demonstrate that Laurent expansions $\left[M\right]_z$ of $H_M(t)$ around other points $z$ of the extended complex plane $\overline\BC$ also carry important structural information.
