Dynamical Structure Factor for the Alternating Heisenberg Chain: A Linked Cluster Calculation

We develop a linked cluster method to calculate the spectral weights of many-particle excitations at zero temperature. The dynamical structure factor is expressed as a sum of exclusive structure factors, each representing contributions from a given set of excited states. A linked cluster technique to obtain high order series expansions for these quantities is discussed. We apply these methods to the alternating Heisenberg chain around the dimerized limit ($λ=0$), where complete wavevector and frequency dependent spectral weights for one and two-particle excitations (continuum and bound-states) are obtained. For small to moderate values of the inter-dimer coupling parameter $λ$, these lead to extremely accurate calculations of the dynamical structure factors. We also examine the variation of the relative spectral weights of one and two-particle states with bond alternation all the way up to the limit of the uniform chain ($λ=1$). In agreement with Schmidt and Uhrig, we find that the spectral weight is dominated by 2-triplet states even at $λ=1$, which implies that a description in terms of triplet-pair excitations remains a good quantitative description of the system even for the uniform chain.

Hysteresis loops of Co-Pt perpendicular magnetic multilayers

We develop a phenomenological model to study magnetic hysteresis in two samples designed as possible perpendicular recording media. A stochastic cellular automata model captures cooperative behavior in the nucleation of magnetic domains. We show how this simple model turns broad hysteresis loops into loops with sharp drops like those observed in these samples, and explains their unusual features. We also present, and experimentally verify, predictions of this model, and suggest how insights from this model may apply more generally.

Simulations of Oligomeric Intermediates in Prion Diseases

We extend our previous stochastic cellular automata based model for areal aggregation of prion proteins on neuronal surfaces. The new anisotropic model allow us to simulate both strong beta-sheet and weaker attachment bonds between proteins. Constraining binding directions allows us to generate aggregate structures with the hexagonal lattice symmetry found in recently observed in vitro experiments. We argue that these constraints on rules may correspond to underlying steric constraints on the aggregation process. We find that monomer dominated growth of the areal aggregate is too slow to account for some observed doubling time-to-incubation time ratios inferred from data, and so consider aggregation dominated by relatively stable but non-infectious oligomeric intermediates. We compare a kinetic theory analysis of oligomeric aggregation to spatially explicit simulations of the process. We find that with suitable rules for misfolding of oligomers, possibly due to water exclusion by the surrounding aggregate, the resulting oligomeric aggregation model maps onto our previous monomer aggregation model. Therefore it can produce some of the same attractive features for the description of prion incubation time data. We propose experiments to test the oligomeric aggregation model.

Specific heat of quasi-2D antiferromagnetic Heisenberg models with varying inter-planar couplings

We have used the stochastic series expansion (SSE) quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) method to study the three-dimensional (3D) antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on cubic lattices with in-plane coupling J and varying inter-plane coupling J_perp < J. The specific heat curves exhibit a 3D ordering peak as well as a broad maximum arising from short-range 2D order. For J_perp << J, there is a clear separation of the two peaks. In the simulations, the contributions to the total specific heat from the ordering across and within the layers can be separated, and this enables us to study in detail the 3D peak around T_c (which otherwise typically is dominated by statistical noise). We find that the peak height decreases with decreasing J_perp, becoming nearly linear below J_perp = 0.2J. The relevance of these results to the lack of observed specific heat anomaly at the ordering transition of some quasi-2D antiferromagnets is discussed.

High-energy magnon dispersion in the half-filled Hubbard model: A comparison with La$_2$CuO$_4$

We use quantum Monte Carlo methods and single-mode approximation to study the magnon dispersion in the 2D half-filled Hubbard and phonon-coupled Heisenberg models. We find that in the Hubbard model with $U/t< 8$, high-energy magnon dispersion is similar to those observed in inelastic neutron scattering experiments in ${La}_2{CuO}_4$. On the other hand, our studies of a 2D Heisenberg model coupled to dynamic optical bond phonons, fails to reproduce the experimental dispersion. These results can be interpreted as evidence for intermediate $U/t$ and charge fluctuations in the cuprate materials.

Spinons in a Crossed-Chains Model of a 2D Spin Liquid

Using Random Phase Approximation, we show that a crossed-chains model of a spin-1/2 Heisenberg spins, with frustrated interchain couplings, has a non-dimerized spin-liquid ground state in 2D, with deconfined spinons as the elementary excitations. The results are confirmed by a bosonization study, which shows that the system is an example of a `sliding Luttinger liquid'. In an external field, the system develops an incommensurate field-induced long range order with a finite transition temperature.

High-energy magnon dispersion and multi-magnon continuum in the two-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet

We use quantum Monte Carlo simulations and numerical analytic continuation to study high-energy spin excitations in the two-dimensional S=1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet at low temperature. We present results for both the transverse and longitudinal dynamic spin structure factor S(q,w) at q=(pi,0) and (pi/2,pi/2). Linear spin-wave theory predicts no dispersion on the line connecting these momenta. Our calculations show that in fact the magnon energy at (pi,0) is 10% lower than at (pi/2,pi/2). We also discuss the transverse and longitudinal multi-magnon continua and their relevance to neutron scattering experiments.

Comment on "Kagome Lattice Antiferromagnet Stripped to Its Basics"

Density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations on large systems (up to 3096 spins) indicate that the ground state of the Heisenberg model on a 3-chain Kagome strip is spontaneously dimerized. This system has degenerate ground states and a gap to triplet and singlet excitations. These results are in direct contradiction with recent results of Azaria et al (Phys. Rev. Lett. 81, 1694 (1998)) and suggest a need for a reexamination of the underlying field theory.

Exact Demonstration of Magnetization Pleateaus and First Order Dimer-Néel Phase Transitions in a Modified Shastry-Sutherland Model for SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$

We study a generalized Shastry-Sutherland model for the material SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$. Along a line in the parameter space, we can show rigorously that the model has a first order phase transition between Dimerized and Néel-ordered ground states. Furthermore, when a magnetic field is applied in the Dimerized phase, magnetization plateaus develop at commensurate values of the magnetization. We also discuss various aspects of the phase diagram and properties of this model away from this exactly soluble line, which include gap-closing continuous transitions between Dimerized and magnetically ordered phases.

Dimer Order with Striped Correlations in the J_1-J_2 Heisenberg Model

Ground state energies for plaquette and dimer order in the $J_1-J_2$ square-lattice spin-half Heisenberg model are compared using series expansion methods. We find that these energies are remarkably close to each other at intermediate values of $J_2/J_1$, where the model is believed to have a quantum disordered ground state. They join smoothly with those obtained from the Ising expansions for the 2-sublattice Néel-state at $J_2/J_1 \approx 0.4$, suggesting a second order transition from a Néel state to a quantum disordered state, whereas they cross the energy for the 4-sublattice ordered state at $J_2/J_1 \approx 0.6$ at a large angle, implying a first order transition to the 4-sublattice magnetic state. The strongest evidence that the plaquette phase is not realized in this model comes from the analysis of the series for the singlet and triplet excitation spectra, which suggest an instability in the plaquette phase. Thus, our study supports the recent work of Kotov et al, which presents a strong picture for columnar dimer order in this model. We also discuss the striped nature of spin correlations in this phase, with substantial resonance all along columns of dimers.

Gapless Singlet modes in the Kagome strips: A study through DMRG and strong coupling analysis

Recently Azaria et al have studied strips of the Kagome-lattice in the weak-coupling limit, where they consist of two spin-half chains on the outside weakly coupled to an array of half-integer spins in the middle. Using a number of mappings they have arrived at the interesting result that in this system all spin excitations are gapped but there are gapless spinless modes. Here we study these Kagome strips in the limit where the interchain couplings are comparable to the coupling to the middle spins by density matrix renormalization group and by a strong coupling analysis. In the limit when the coupling to the middle-spin dominates, the 5-spins of the unit-cell reduce to a single S=3/2 spin, and the overall system has well known gapless spin excitations. We study the phase transition from this phase to the weak-coupling phase. We also carry out a strong coupling analysis away from the S=3/2 limit, where the five-spin blocks have four degenerate ground states with S=1/2, which can be thought of as two spin and two pseudospin degrees of freedom. A numerical study of this strong coupling model also suggests a finite spin-gap.

Alternating Spin and Orbital Dimerization in Strong-coupling Two-band Models

We study a one-dimensional Hamiltonian consisting of coupled SU(2) spin and orbital degrees of freedom. Using the density matrix renormalization group, we calculate the phase-diagram and the ground state correlation functions for this model. We find that, in addition to the ferromagnetic and power-law antiferromagnetic phases for spin and orbital degrees of freedom, this model has a gapless line extending from the ferromagnetic phase to the Bethe ansatz solvable SU(4) critical point, and a gapped phase with doubly degenerate ground states which form alternating spin and orbital singlets. The spin-gap and the order parameters are evaluated and the relevance to several recently discovered spin-gap materials is discussed.

Field dependent thermodynamics and Quantum Critical Phenomena in the dimerized spin system Cu2(C5H12N2)2Cl4

Experimental data for the uniform susceptibility, magnetization and specific heat for the material Cu2(C5H12N2)2Cl4 (abbreviated CuHpCl) as a function of temperature and external field are compared with those of three different dimerized spin models: alternating spin-chains, spin-ladders and the bilayer Heisenberg model. It is shown that because this material consists of weakly coupled spin-dimers, much of the data is insensitive to how the dimers are coupled together and what the effective dimensionality of the system is. When such a system is tuned to the quantum critical point by application of a field, the dimensionality shows up in the power-law dependences of thermodynamic quantities on temperature. We discuss the temperature window for such a quantum critical behavior in CuHpCl.

Tests of magnetic Hamiltonians for CaV_4O_9

We study the uniform magnetic susceptibility and spin-gap for recently proposed Heisenberg model Hamiltonians for CaV_4O_9 based on the orbital ordering scenario of Marini and Khomskii and the LDA calculations of Pickett. We argue that the experimentally observed uniform susceptibility data is inconsistent with the weakly coupled dimer picture of Marini and Khomskii. The model proposed by Pickett can, with appropriate choice of parameters, lead to an explanation for the observed gap and uniform susceptibility. The resulting agreement with experiments is of a similar quality to previously studied models. We argue that this new model is best distinguished from previous ones by neutron or Raman scattering experiments, via the location of the excitation minimum in the Brillouin zone and by the possible existence or non-existence of sharply defined singlet excitations.

Field Dependence of the Magnetization for the spin-ladder material Cu_2(C_5H_{12}N_2)_2Cl_4

We have developed a series expansion method for calculating the uniform magnetization, M, as a function of the applied field h for Heisenberg systems at T=0. The method involves introducing Ising anisotropy along the z-axis together with an applied uniform field along the x-axis. On extrapolation to the isotropic limit, one recovers the magnetization for the Heisenberg system with an applied field along the x-axis. This method circumvents the difficulties in developing perturbation theory associated with the commuting nature of the uniform field. The results developed for two-chain ladders appropriate for the material Cu_2(C_5H_{12}N_2)_2Cl_4 are in good agreement with the experimental data. In addition, uniform susceptibility is calculated by high temperature expansions and also compared with the experimental data.

High Temperature Expansion Study of the Nishimori multicritical Point in Two and Four Dimensions

We study the two and four dimensional Nishimori multicritical point via high temperature expansions for the $\pm J$ distribution, random-bond, Ising model. In $2d$ we estimate the the critical exponents along the Nishimori line to be $γ=2.37\pm 0.05$, $ν=1.32\pm 0.08$. These, and earlier $3d$ estimates $γ=1.80\pm 0.15$, $ν=0.85\pm 0.08$ are remarkably close to the critical exponents for percolation, which are known to be $γ=43/18$, $ν=4/3$ in $d=2$ and $γ=1.805\pm0.02$ and $ν=0.875\pm 0.008$ in $d=3$. However, the estimated $4d$ Nishimori exponents $γ=1.80\pm 0.15$, $ν=1.0\pm 0.1$, are quite distinct from the $4d$ percolation results $γ=1.435\pm 0.015$, $ν=0.678\pm 0.05$.

Isotropic Spin Wave Theory of Short-Range Magnetic Order

We present an isotropic spin wave (ISW) theory of short-range order in Heisenberg magnets, and apply it to square lattice S=1/2 and S=1 antiferromagnets. Our theory has three identical (isotropic) spin wave modes, whereas the conventional spin wave theory has two transverse and one longitudinal mode. We calculate temperature dependences of various thermodynamic observables analytically and find good (several per cent) agreement with independently obtained numerical results in a broad temperature range.

Spinons, Solitons and Magnons in One-dimensional Heisenberg-Ising Antiferromagnets

We calculate the excitation spectra for the one-$d$ Heisenberg-Ising antiferromagnets by expansions around the Ising limit. For $S=1/2$, the calculated expansion coefficients for the spinon-spectra agree term by term with the solution of Johnson and McCoy. For $S=1$, the solitons become gapless before the Heisenberg limit is reached, signalling a transition to the Haldane phase. By applying a staggered field we calculate the one-magnon spectra for the $S=1$ Heisenberg chain. For $S=3/2$ the quantum renormalization of the spin-wave spectra is calculated to be approximately $1.16$.
