Spin-wave excitation spectra and spectral weights in square lattice antiferromagnets

Using a recently developed method for calculating series expansions of the excitation spectra of quantum lattice models, we obtain the spin-wave spectra for square lattice, $S=1/2$ Heisenberg-Ising antiferromagnets. The calculated spin-wave spectrum for the Heisenberg model is close to but noticeably different from a uniformly renormalized classical (large-$S$) spectrum with the renormalization for the spin-wave velocity of approximately $1.18$. The relative weights of the single-magnon and multi-magnon contributions to neutron scattering spectra are obtained for wavevectors throughout the Brillouin zone.

The Spin Stiffness and the Transverse Susceptibility of the Half-filled Hubbard Model

The $T=0$ spin stiffness $ρ_{s}$ and the transverse susceptibility $χ_{\perp }$ of the square lattice half-filled Hubbard model are calculated as a function of the Hubbard parameter ratio $U/t$ by series expansions around the Ising limit. We find that the calculated spin-stiffness, transverse susceptibility, and sublattice magnetization for the Hubbard model smoothly approach the Heisenberg values for large $U/t$. The results are compared for different $U/t$ with RPA and other numerical studies.

Ising Expansion for the Hubbard Model

We develop series expansions for the ground state properties of the Hubbard model, by introducing an Ising anisotropy into the Hamiltonian. For the two-dimensional (2D) square lattice half-filled Hubbard model, the ground state energy, local moment, sublattice magnetization, uniform magnetic susceptibility and spin stiffness are calculated as a function of $U/t$, where $U$ is the Coulomb constant and $t$ is the hopping parameter. Magnetic susceptibility data indicate a crossover around $U\approx 4$ between spin density wave antiferromagnetism and Heisenberg antiferromagnetism. Comparisons with Monte Carlo simulations, RPA result and mean field solutions are also made.

Crossover Phase Diagram of 2D Heisenberg Ferro- and Antiferromagnets

We propose a single crossover phase diagram applicable to 2D collinear Heisenberg antiferromagnets (AFMs) and ferromagnets (FMs), and show that the scaling regimes of AFMs and FMs are in one-to-one correspondence. The phase diagram is split into classical and quantum regions. Our two key results are: (i) in the classical region, the AFMs and FMs exhibit nearly identical behavior near their respective ordering wavevectors, which we observe for S=1 and higher using series expansions; and (ii) in the quantum region, quantum critical (QC) regime is present not only for the AFMs, but for FMs as well.

Phase Transitions in the Symmetric Kondo Lattice Model in Two and Three Dimensions

We present an application of high-order series expansion in the coupling constants for the ground state properties of correlated lattice fermion systems. Expansions have been generated up to order $(t/J)^{14}$ for $d=1$ and $(t/J)^8$ for $d=2,\ 3$ for certain properties of the symmetric Kondo lattice model. Analyzing the susceptibility series, we find evidence for a continuous phase transition from the ``spin liquid'' phase characteristic of a ``Kondo Insulator'' to an antiferromagnetically ordered phase in dimensions $d\ge2$ as the antiferromagnetic Kondo coupling is decreased. The critical point is estimated to be at $(t/J)_c\approx0.7$ for square lattice and $(t/J)_c\approx0.5$ for simple-cubic lattice.

A Plane of Weakly Coupled Heisenberg Chains: Theoretical Arguments and Numerical Calculations

The $S=1/2$, nearest-neighbor, quantum Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the square lattice with spatially anisotropic couplings is reconsidered, with particular attention to the following question: at T=0, does Néel orderdevelop at infinitesimal interchain coupling, or is there a nonzero critical coupling? A heuristic renormalization group argument is presented which suggests that previous theoretical answers to that question are incorrect or at least incomplete, and that the answer is not universal but rather depends on the microscopic details of the model under consideration. Numerical investigations of the nearest-neighbor model are carried out {\it via} zero-temperature series expansions about Ising and dimer Hamiltonians. The results are entirely consistent with a vanishing critical interchain coupling ratio $R_c$; if $R_c$ is finite, it is unlikely to substantially exceed 0.02.

Quantum Critical Scaling in a Moderately Doped Antiferromagnet

Using high temperature expansions for the equal time correlator $S(q)$ and static susceptibility $χ(q)$ for the t-J model, we present evidence for quantum critical (QC), $z\!=\!1$, behavior at intermediate temperatures in a broad range of $t/J$ ratio, doping, and temperatures. We find that the dynamical susceptibility is very close to the universal scaling function computable for the asymptotic QC regime, and that the dominant energy scale is temperature. Our results are in excellent agreement with measurements of the spin-echo decay rate, $1/T_{\rm 2G}$, in La$_2$CuO$_4$, and provide qualitative understanding of both $1/T_1$ and $1/T_{\rm 2G}$ nuclear relaxation rates in doped cuprates.
