Effect of the Heterogeneity of Metamaterials on Casimir-Lifshitz Interaction

The Casimir-Lifshitz interaction between metamaterials is studied using a model that takes into account the structural heterogeneity of the dielectric and magnetic properties of the bodies. A recently developed perturbation theory for the Casimir-Lifshitz interaction between arbitrary material bodies is generalized to include non-uniform magnetic permeability profiles, and used to study the interaction between the magneto-dielectric heterostructures within the leading order. The metamaterials are modeled as two dimensional arrays of domains with varying permittivity and permeability. In the case of two semi-infinite bodies with flat boundaries, the patterned structure of the material properties is found to cause the normal Casimir-Lifshitz force to develop an oscillatory behavior when the distance between the two bodies is comparable to the wavelength of the patterned features in the metamaterials. The non-uniformity also leads to the emergence of lateral Casimir-Lifshitz forces, which tend to strengthen as the gap size becomes smaller. Our results suggest that the recent studies on Casimir-Lifshitz forces between metamaterials, which have been performed with the aim of examining the possibility of observing the repulsive force, should be revisited to include the effect of the patterned structure at the wavelength of several hundred nanometers that coincides with the relevant gap size in the experiments.

Synthetic Mechanochemical Molecular Swimmer

A minimal design for a molecular swimmer is proposed that is a based on a mechanochemical propulsion mechanism. Conformational changes are induced by electrostatic actuation when specific parts of the molecule temporarily acquire net charges through catalyzed chemical reactions involving ionic components. The mechanochemical cycle is designed such that the resulting conformational changes would be sufficient for achieving low Reynolds number propulsion. The system is analyzed within the recently developed framework of stochastic swimmers to take account of the noisy environment at the molecular scale. The swimming velocity of the device is found to depend on the concentration of the fuel molecule according to the Michaelis-Menten rule in enzymatic reactions.

Coherent Hydrodynamic Coupling for Stochastic Swimmers

A recently developed theory of stochastic swimming is used to study the notion of coherence in active systems that couple via hydrodynamic interactions. It is shown that correlations between various modes of deformation in stochastic systems play the same role as the relative internal phase in deterministic systems. An example is presented where a simple swimmer can use these correlations to hunt a non-swimmer by forming a hydrodynamic bound state of tunable velocity and equilibrium separation. These results highlight the significance of coherence in the collective behavior of nano-scale stochastic swimmers.

Synchronization and Collective Dynamics in a Carpet of Microfluidic Rotors

We study synchronization of an array of rotors on a substrate that are coupled by hydrodynamic interaction. The rotors that are modeled by an effective rigid body, are driven by an internal torque and exerts an active force on the surrounding fluid. The long-ranged nature of the hydrodynamic interaction between the rotors causes a rich pattern of dynamical behaviors including phase ordering and turbulent spiral waves. The model provides a novel example of coupled oscillators with long-range interaction. Our results suggest strategies for designing controllable microfluidic mixers using the emergent behavior of hydrodynamically coupled active components.

Synchronization in A Carpet of Hydrodynamically Coupled Rotors with Random Intrinsic Frequency

We investigate synchronization caused by long-range hydrodynamic interaction in a two-dimensional, substrated array of rotors with random intrinsic frequencies. The rotor mimics a flagellated bacterium that is attached to the substrate ("bacterial carpet") and exerts an active force on the fluid. Transition from coherent to incoherent regimes is studied numerically, and the results are compared to a mean-field theory. We show that quite a narrow distribution of the intrinsic frequency is required to achieve collective motion in realistic cases. The transition is gradual, and the critical behavior is qualitatively different from that of the conventional globally coupled oscillators. The model not only serves as a novel example of non-locally coupled oscillators, but also provides insights into the role of intrinsic heterogeneities in living and artificial microfluidic actuators.

Casimir-Lifshitz Interaction between Dielectrics of Arbitrary Geometry: A Dielectric Contrast Perturbation Theory

The general theory of electromagnetic--fluctuation--induced interactions in dielectric bodies as formulated by Dzyaloshinskii, Lifshitz, and Pitaevskii is rewritten as a perturbation theory in terms of the spatial contrast in (imaginary) frequency dependent dielectric function. The formulation can be used to calculate the Casimir-Lifshitz forces for dielectric objects of arbitrary geometry, as a perturbative expansion in the dielectric contrast, and could thus complement the existing theories that use perturbation in geometrical features. We find that expansion in dielectric contrast recasts the resulting Lifshitz energy into a sum of the different many-body contributions. The limit of validity and convergence properties of the perturbation theory is discussed using the example of parallel semi-infinite objects for which the exact result is known.

Casimir-Lifshitz Interaction between Dielectric Heterostructures

The interaction between arbitrary dielectric heterostructures is studied within the framework of a recently developed dielectric contrast perturbation theory. It is shown that periodically patterned dielectric or metallic structures lead to oscillatory lateral Casimir-Lifshitz forces, as well as modulations in the normal force as they are displaced with respect to one another. The strength of these oscillatory contributions increases with decreasing gap size and increasing contrast in the dielectric properties of the materials used in the heterostructures.

Anomalous Diffusion of Symmetric and Asymmetric Active Colloids

The stochastic dynamics of colloidal particles with surface activity--in the form of catalytic reaction or particle release--and self-phoretic effects is studied analytically. Three different time scales corresponding to inertial effects, solute redistribution, and rotational diffusion are identified and shown to lead to a plethora of different regimes involving inertial, propulsive, anomalous, and diffusive behaviors. For symmetric active colloids, a regime is found where the mean-squared displacement has a super-diffusive $t^{3/2}$ behavior. At the longest time scales, an effective diffusion coefficient is found which has a non-monotonic dependence on the size of the colloid.

Orientationally ordered aggregates of stiff polyelectrolytes in the presence of multivalent salt

Aggregation of stiff polyelectrolytes in solution and angle- and distance-dependent potential of mean force between two like-charged rods are studied in the presence of 3-valent salt using molecular dynamics simulations. In the bulk solution, formation of long-lived metastable structures with similarities to the raft-like structures of actin filaments is observed within a range of salt concentration. The system finally goes to a state with lower free energy in which finite-sized bundles of parallel polyelectrolytes form. Preferred angle and interaction type between two like-charged rods at different separations and salt concentrations are also studied, which shed some light on the formation of orientationally ordered structures.

Stochastic Low Reynolds Number Swimmers

As technological advances allow us to fabricate smaller autonomous self-propelled devices, it is clear that at some point directed propulsion could not come from pre-specified deterministic periodic deformation of the swimmer's body and we need to develop strategies to extract a net directed motion from a series of random transitions in the conformation space of the swimmer. We present a theoretical formulation to describe the "stochastic motor" that drives the motion of low Reynolds number swimmers based on this concept, and use it to study the propulsion of a simple low Reynolds number swimmer, namely, the three-sphere swimmer model. When the detailed-balanced is broken and the motor is driven out of equilibrium, it can propel the swimmer in the required direction. The formulation can be used to study optimal design strategies for molecular-scale low Reynolds number swimmers.

Effect of Bending Anisotropy on the 3D Conformation of Short DNA Loops

The equilibrium three dimensional shape of relatively short loops of DNA is studied using an elastic model that takes into account anisotropy in bending rigidities. Using a reasonable estimate for the anisotropy, it is found that cyclized DNA with lengths that are not integer multiples of the pitch take on nontrivial shapes that involve bending out of planes and formation of kinks. The effect of sequence inhomogeneity on the shape of DNA is addressed, and shown to enhance the geometrical features. These findings could shed some light on the role of DNA conformation in protein--DNA interactions.

Soret Motion of a Charged Spherical Colloid

The thermophoretic motion of a charged spherical colloidal particle and its accompanying cloud of counterions and co-ions in a temperature gradient is studied theoretically. Using the Debye-Huckel approximation, the Soret drift velocity of a weakly charged colloid is calculated analytically. For highly charged colloids, the nonlinear system of electrokinetic equations is solved numerically, and the effects of high surface potential, dielectrophoresis, and convection are examined. Our results are in good agreement with some of the recent experiments on highly charged colloids without using adjustable parameters.

Analytic results for the three-sphere swimmer at low Reynolds number

The simple model of a low Reynolds number swimmer made from three spheres that are connected by two arms is considered in its general form and analyzed. The swimming velocity, force--velocity response, power consumption, and efficiency of the swimmer are calculated both for general deformations and also for specific model prescriptions. The role of noise and coherence in the stroke cycle is also discussed.

Three-Sphere Low Reynolds Number Swimmer with a Cargo Container

A recently introduced model for an autonomous swimmer at low Reynolds number that is comprised of three spheres connected by two arms is considered when one of the spheres has a large radius. The Stokes hydrodynamic flow associated with the swimming strokes and net motion of this system can be studied analytically using the Stokes Green's function of a point force in front of a sphere of arbitrary radius $R$ provided by Oseen. The swimming velocity is calculated, and shown to scale as $1/R^3$ with the radius of the sphere.

A frustrated nanomechanical device powered by the lateral Casimir force

The coupling between corrugated surfaces due to the lateral Casimir force is employed to propose a nanoscale mechanical device composed of two racks and a pinion. The noncontact nature of the interaction allows for the system to be made frustrated by choosing the two racks to move in the same direction and forcing the pinion to choose between two opposite directions. This leads to a rich and sensitive phase behavior, which makes the device potentially useful as a mechanical {\em sensor} or {\em amplifier}. The device could also be used to make a mechanical {\em clock} signal of tunable frequency.

Mechanical Response of a Small Swimmer Driven by Conformational Transitions

A conformation space kinetic model is constructed to drive the deformation cycle of a three-sphere swimmer to achieve propulsion at low Reynolds number. We analyze the effect of an external load on the performance of this kinetic swimmer, and show that it depends sensitively on where the force is exerted, so that there is no general force--velocity relation. We discuss how the conformational cycle of such swimmers should be designed to increase their performance in resisting forces applied at specific points.

Aggregation kinetics of stiff polyelectrolytes in the presence of multivalent salt

Using molecular dynamics simulations, the kinetics of bundle formation for stiff polyelectrolytes such as actin is studied in the solution of multivalent salt. The dominant kinetic mode of aggregation is found to be the case of one end of one rod meeting others at right angle due to electrostatic interactions. The kinetic pathway to bundle formation involves a hierarchical structure of small clusters forming initially and then feeding into larger clusters, which is reminiscent of the flocculation dynamics of colloids. For the first few cluster sizes, the Smoluchowski formula for the time evolution of the cluster size gives a reasonable account for the results of our simulation without a single fitting parameter. The description using Smoluchowski formula provides evidence for the aggregation time scale to be controlled by diffusion, with no appreciable energy barrier to overcome.

Self-motile colloidal particles: from directed propulsion to random walk

The motion of an artificial micro-scale swimmer that uses a chemical reaction catalyzed on its own surface to achieve autonomous propulsion is fully characterized experimentally. It is shown that at short times, it has a substantial component of directed motion, with a velocity that depends on the concentration of fuel molecules. At longer times, the motion reverts to a random walk with a substantially enhanced diffusion coefficient. Our results suggest strategies for designing artificial chemotactic systems.
