Rectification of the lateral Casimir force in a vibrating non-contact rack and pinion

The nonlinear dynamics of a cylindrical pinion that is kept at a distance from a vibrating rack is studied, and it is shown that the lateral Casimir force between the two corrugated surfaces can be rectified. The effects of friction and external load are taken into account and it is shown that the pinion can do work against loads of up to a critical value, which is set by the amplitude of the lateral Casimir force. We present a phase diagram for the rectified motion that could help its experimental investigations, as the system exhibits a chaotic behavior in a large part of the parameter space.

Non-contact rack and pinion powered by the lateral Casimir force

The lateral Casimir force is employed to propose a design for a potentially wear-proof rack and pinion with no contact, which can be miniaturized to nano-scale. The robustness of the design is studied by exploring the relation between the pinion velocity and the rack velocity in the different domains of the parameter space. The effects of friction and added external load are also examined. It is shown that the device can hold up extremely high velocities, unlike what the general perception of the Casimir force as a weak interaction might suggest.

Orientational Ordering and Dynamics of Rodlike Polyelectrolytes

The interplay between electrostatic interactions and orientational correlations is studied for a model system of charged rods positioned on a chain, using Monte Carlo simulation techniques. It is shown that the coupling brings about the notion of {\em electrostatic frustration}, which in turn results in: (i) a rich variety of novel orientational orderings such as chiral phases, and (ii) an inherently slow dynamics characterized by stretched-exponential behavior in the relaxation functions of the system.

Propulsion of a molecular machine by asymmetric distribution of reaction--products

A simple model for the reaction-driven propulsion of a small device is proposed as a model for (part of) a molecular machine in aqueous media. Motion of the device is driven by an asymmetric distribution of reaction products. The propulsive velocity of the device is calculated as well as the scale of the velocity fluctuations. The effects of hydrodynamic flow as well as a number of different scenarios for the kinetics of the reaction are addressed.

Elastic Correlations in Nucleosomal DNA Structure

The structure of DNA in the nucleosome core particle is studied using an elastic model that incorporates anisotropy in the bending energetics and twist-bend coupling. Using the experimentally determined structure of nucleosomal DNA [T.J. Richmond and C.A. Davey, Nature {\bf 423}, 145 (2003)], it is shown that elastic correlations exist between twist, roll, tilt, and stretching of DNA, as well as the distance between phosphate groups. The twist-bend coupling term is shown to be able to capture these correlations to a large extent, and a fit to the experimental data yields a new estimate of G=25 nm for the value of the twist-bend coupling constant.

Lifshitz Interaction between Dielectric Bodies of Arbitrary Geometry

A formulation is developed for the calculation of the electromagnetic--fluctuation forces for dielectric objects of arbitrary geometry at small separations, as a perturbative expansion in the dielectric contrast. The resulting Lifshitz energy automatically takes on the form of a series expansion of the different many-body contributions. The formulation has the advantage that the divergent contributions can be readily determined and subtracted off, and thus makes a convenient scheme for realistic numerical calculations, which could be useful in designing nano-scale mechanical devices.

Can non-linear elasticity explain contact-line roughness at depinning?

We examine whether cubic non-linearities, allowed by symmetry in the elastic energy of a contact line, may result in a different universality class at depinning. Standard linear elasticity predicts a roughness exponent zeta=1/3 (one loop), zeta=0.39 (numerics) while experiments give zeta of about 0.5. Within functional RG we find that a non-local KPZ-type term is generated at depinning and grows under coarse graining. A fixed point with zeta=0.45 (one loop) is identified, showing that large enough cubic terms increase the roughness. This fixed point is unstable, revealing a rough strong-coupling phase. Experimental study of contact angles theta near pi/2, where cubic terms vanish in the energy, is suggested.

A Simplest Swimmer at Low Reynolds Number: Three Linked Spheres

We propose a very simple one-dimensional swimmer consisting of three spheres that are linked by rigid rods whose lengths can change between two values. With a periodic motion in a non-reciprocal fashion, which breaks the time-reversal symmetry as well as the translational symmetry, we show that the model device can swim at low Reynolds number. This model system could be used in constructing molecular-size machines.

Anomalous Buckling of Charged Rods

Unscreened electrostatic interactions exert a profound effect on the onset of the buckling instability of a charged rod. When this interaction is unscreened, the threshold value of the compressional force needed to induce buckling is independent of rod length for sufficiently long rods. In the case of rods of intermediate length, the critical buckling force crosses over from the classic inverse-square length dependence to asymptotic length-independent form with increasing rod length. It is suggested that this effect might lead to the possibility of the ``electromechanical'' stiffening of nanotubes, which would allow relatively long segments of them to be used as atomic force probes.

Forces Induced by Non-Equilibrium Fluctuations: The Soret-Casimir Effect

The notion of fluctuation-induced forces is generalized to the cases where the fluctuations have nonequilibrium origin. It is shown that a net force is exerted on a single flat plate that restricts scale-free fluctuations of a scalar field in a temperature gradient. This force tends to push the object to the colder regions, which is a manifestation of thermophoresis or the Soret effect. In the classic two-plate geometry, it is shown that the Casimir forces exerted on the two plates differ from each other, and thus the Newton's third law is violated.

Electrostatic Contribution to Twist Rigidity of DNA

The electrostatic contribution to twist rigidity of DNA is studied, and it is shown that the Coulomb self-energy of the double-helical sugar-phosphate backbone contributes considerably to twist rigidity of DNA--the electrostatic twist rigidity of DNA is found as $C_{\rm elec}\approx 5$ nm, which makes up about 7% of its total twist rigidity ($C_{\rm DNA}\approx 75$ nm). The electrostatic twist rigidity is found, however, to only weakly depend on the salt concentration, because of a competition between two different screening mechanisms: (1) Debye screening by the salt ions in the bulk, and (2) structural screening by the periodic charge distribution along the backbone of the helical polyelectrolyte. It is found that depending on the parameters, the electrostatic contribution could stabilize or destabilize the structure of a helical polyelectrolyte.

Anomalous bending of a polyelectrolyte

We report on a study of the shape of a stiff, charged rod that is subjected to equal and opposite force couples at its two ends. Unlike a neutral elastic rod, which forms a constant curvature configuration under such influences, the charged rod tends to flatten in the interior and accumulate the curvature in the end points, to maximally reduce the electrostatic self-repulsion. The effect of this nonuniform bending on the effective elasticity and on the statistical conformations of a fluctuating charged rod is discussed. An alternative definition for the electrostatic persistence length is suggested. This new definition is found to be consistent with a corresponding length that can be deduced from the end-to-end distribution function of a fluctuating polyelectrolyte.

Probing Polyelectrolyte Elasticity Using Radial Distribution Function

We study the effect of electrostatic interactions on the distribution function of the end-to-end distance of a single polyelectrolyte chain in the rodlike limit. The extent to which the radial distribution function of a polyelectrolyte is reproduced by that of a wormlike chain with an adjusted persistence length is investigated. Strong evidence is found for a universal scaling formula connecting the effective persistence length of a polyelectrolyte with its linear charge density and the Debye screening of its self-interaction. An alternative definition of the electrostatic persistence length is proposed based on matching of the maximum of the distribution with that of an effective wormlike chain, as opposed to the traditional matching of the first or the second moments of the distributions. It is shown that this definition provides a more accurate probe of the affinity of the distribution to that of the wormlike chains, as compared to the traditional definition. It is also found that the length of a polyelectrolyte segment can act as a crucial parameter in determining its elastic properties.

Normal and Lateral Casimir Forces between Deformed Plates

The Casimir force between macroscopic bodies depends strongly on their shape and orientation. To study this geometry dependence in the case of two deformed metal plates, we use a path integral quantization of the electromagnetic field which properly treats the many-body nature of the interaction, going beyond the commonly used pairwise summation (PWS) of van der Waals forces. For arbitrary deformations we provide an analytical result for the deformation induced change in Casimir energy, which is exact to second order in the deformation amplitude. For the specific case of sinusoidally corrugated plates, we calculate both the normal and the lateral Casimir forces. The deformation induced change in the Casimir interaction of a flat and a corrugated plate shows an interesting crossover as a function of the ratio of the mean platedistance H to the corrugation length λ: For λ\ll H we find a slower decay \sim H^{-4}, compared to the H^{-5} behavior predicted by PWS which we show to be valid only for λ\gg H. The amplitude of the lateral force between two corrugated plates which are out of registry is shown to have a maximum at an optimal wavelength of λ\approx 2.5 H. With increasing H/λ\gtrsim 0.3 the PWS approach becomes a progressively worse description of the lateral force due to many-body effects. These results may be of relevance for the design and operation of novel microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) and other nanoscale devices.

Fluctuations of Fluctuation-Induced "Casimir" Forces

The force experienced by objects embedded in a correlated medium undergoing thermal fluctuations--the so-called fluctuation--induced force--is actually itself a fluctuating quantity. We compute the corresponding probability distribution and show that it is a Gaussian centered on the well-known Casimir force, with a non-universal standard deviation that can be typically as large as the mean force itself. The relevance of these results to the experimental measurement of fluctuation-induced forces is discussed, as well as the influence of the finite temporal resolution of the measuring apparatus.

Radial Distribution Function of Rodlike Polyelectrolytes

We study the effect of electrostatic interactions on the distribution function of the end-to-end distance of a single polyelectrolyte chain in a rodlike configuration. We investigate the validity of the concept of electrostatic persistence length for uniformly charged wormlike chains for both screened and unscreened Coulomb interactions. We find that the distribution function of a polyelectrolyte often differs significantly from the distribution function of a wormlike chain.

Nonlinear Mechanical Response of DNA due to Anisotropic Bending Elasticity

The response of a short DNA segment to bending is studied, taking into account the anisotropy in the bending rigidities caused by the double-helical structure. It is shown that the anisotropy introduces an effective nonlinear twist-bend coupling that can lead to the formation of kinks and modulations in the curvature and/or in the twist, depending on the values of the elastic constants and the imposed deflection angle. The typical wavelength for the modulations, or the distance between the neighboring kinks is found to be set by half of the DNA pitch.

Phonon-Mediated Anomalous Dynamics of Defects

Dynamics of an array of line defects interacting with a background elastic medium is studied in the linear regime. It is shown that the inertial coupling between the defects and the ambient phonons leads to an anomalous response behavior for the deformation modes of a defect-lattice, in the form of anisotropic and anomalous mass and elastic constants, resonant dissipation through excitation of phonons, and instabilities. The case of a single fluctuating line defect is also studied, and it is shown that it could lead to formation of shock waves in the elastic medium for sufficiently high frequency deformation modes.
