Measurement and control of a Coulomb-blockaded parafermion box

Parafermionic zero modes are fractional topologically protected quasiparticles expected to arise in various platforms. We show that Coulomb charging effects define a parafermion box with unique access options via fractional edge states and/or quantum antidots. Basic protocols for the detection, manipulation, and control of parafermionic quantum states are formulated. With those tools, one may directly observe the dimension of the zero-mode Hilbert space, prove the degeneracy of this space, and perform on-demand digital operations satisfying a parafermionic algebra.

Majorana qubits in topological insulator nanoribbon architecture

We describe designs for the realization of topological Majorana qubits in terms of proximitized topological insulator nanoribbons pierced by a uniform axial magnetic field. This platform holds promise for particularly robust Majorana bound states, with easily manipulable inter-state couplings. We propose proof-of-principle experiments for initializing, manipulating, and reading out Majorana box qubits defined in floating devices dominated by charging effects. We argue that the platform offers design advantages which make it particularly suitable for extension to qubit network structures realizing a Majorana surface code.

Low-dimensional approach to pair production in an oscillating electric field: Application to bandgap graphene layers

The production of particle-antiparticle pairs from the quantum field theoretic ground state in the presence of an external electric field is studied. Starting with the quantum kinetic Boltzmann-Vlasov equation in four-dimensional spacetime, we obtain the corresponding equations in lower dimensionalities by way of spatial compactification. Our outcomes in $2+1$-dimensions are applied to bandgap graphene layers, where the charge carriers have the particular property of behaving like light massive Dirac fermions. We calculate the single-particle distribution function for the case of an electric field oscillating in time and show that the creation of particle-hole pairs in this condensed matter system closely resembles electron-positron pair production by the Schwinger effect.

Majorana box qubits

Quantum information protected by the topology of the storage medium is expected to exhibit long coherence times. Another feature are topologically protected gates generated through braiding of Majorana bound states. However, braiding requires structures with branched topological segments which have inherent difficulties in the semiconductor-superconductor heterostructures now believed to host Majorana bound states. In this paper, we construct quantum bits taking advantage of the topological protection and non-local properties of Majorana bound states in a network of parallel wires, but without relying on braiding for quantum gates. The elementary unit is made from three topological wires, two wires coupled by a trivial superconductor and the third acting as an interference arm. Coulomb blockade of the combined wires spawns a fractionalized spin, non-locally addressable by quantum dots used for single-qubit readout, initialization, and manipulation. We describe how the same tools allow for measurement-based implementation of the Clifford gates, in total making the architecture universal. Proof-of-principle demonstration of topologically protected qubits using existing techniques is therefore within reach.

Interaction-induced conductance from zero modes in a clean magnetic graphene waveguide

We consider a waveguide formed in a clean graphene monolayer by a spatially inhomogeneous magnetic field. The single-particle dispersion relation for this waveguide exhibits a zero-energy Landau-like flat band, while finite-energy bands have dispersion and correspond, in particular, to snake orbits. For zero-mode states, all matrix elements of the current operator vanish, and a finite conductance can only be caused by virtual transitions to finite-energy bands. We show that Coulomb interactions generate such processes. In stark contrast to finite-energy bands, the conductance is not quantized and shows a characteristic dependence on the zero-mode filling. Transport experiments thereby offer a novel and highly sensitive probe of electron-electron interactions in clean graphene samples. We argue that this interaction-driven zero-mode conductor may also appear in other physical settings and is not captured by the conventional Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid description.

Tunneling spectroscopy of Majorana-Kondo devices

We study the local density of states (LDOS) in systems of Luttinger-liquid nanowires connected to a common mesoscopic superconducting island, in which Majorana bound states give rise to different types of topological Kondo effects. We show that electron interactions enhance the low-energy LDOS in the leads close to the island, with unusual exponents due to Kondo physics that can be probed in tunneling experiments.

Non-Fermi liquid manifold in a Majorana device

We propose and study a setup realizing a stable manifold of non-Fermi liquid states. The device consists of a mesoscopic superconducting island hosting $N \ge 3$ Majorana bound states tunnel-coupled to normal leads, with a Josephson contact to a bulk superconductor. We find a nontrivial interplay between multi-channel Kondo and resonant Andreev reflection processes, which results in the fixed point manifold. The scaling dimension of the leading irrelevant perturbation changes continuously within the manifold and determines the power-law scaling of the temperature dependent conductance.

Orbital ferromagnetism in interacting few-electron dots with strong spin-orbit coupling

We study the ground state of $N$ weakly interacting electrons (with $N\le 10$) in a two-dimensional parabolic quantum dot with strong Rashba spin-orbit coupling. Using dimensionless parameters for the Coulomb interaction, $λ\lesssim 1$, and the Rashba coupling, $α\gg 1$, the low-energy physics is characterized by an almost flat single-particle dispersion. From an analytical approach for $α\to \infty$ and $N=2$, and from numerical exact diagonalization and Hartree-Fock calculations, we find a transition from a conventional unmagnetized ground state (for $λ<λ_c$) to an orbital ferromagnet (for $λ>λ_c$), with a large magnetization and a circulating charge current. We show that the critical interaction strength, $λ_c=λ_c(α,N)$, vanishes in the limit $α\to \infty$.

Nonequilibrium Rashba field driven domain wall motion in ferromagnetic nanowires

We study the effects of spin-orbit interaction (SOI) on the current-induced motion of a magnetic (Bloch) domain wall in ultrathin ferromagnetic nanowires. The conspiracy of spin relaxation and SOI is shown to generate a novel strong nonequilibrium Rashba field, which is dominant even for moderate SOI. This field causes intricate spin precession and a transition from translatory to oscillatory wall dynamics with increasing SOI. We show that current pulses of different lengths can efficiently be used to control the domain wall motion.

Multi-Terminal Coulomb-Majorana Junction

We study multiple helical nanowires in proximity to a common mesoscopic superconducting island, where Majorana fermion bound states are formed. We show that a weak finite charging energy of the center island may dramatically affect the low-energy behavior of the system. While for strong charging interactions, the junction decouples the connecting wires, interactions lower than a non-universal threshold may trigger the flow towards an exotic Kondo fixed point. In either case, the ideally Andreev reflecting fixed point characteristic for infinite capacitance (grounded) devices gets destabilized by interactions.

Emerging Dirac and Majorana fermions for carbon nanotubes with proximity-induced pairing and spiral magnetic field

We study the low-energy bandstructure of armchair and small-bandgap semiconducting carbon nanotubes with proximity-induced superconducting pairing when a spiral magnetic field creates strong effective spin-orbit interactions from the Zeeman term and a periodic potential from the orbital part. We find that gapless Dirac fermions can be generated by variation of a single parameter. For a semiconducting tube with the field in the same plane, a non-degenerate zero mode at momentum k=0 can be induced, allowing for the generation of topologically protected Majorana fermion end states.

Current-induced forces in mesoscopic systems: a scattering matrix approach

Nanoelectromechanical systems are characterized by an intimate connection between electronic and mechanical degrees of freedom. Due to the nanoscopic scale, current flowing through the system noticeably impacts the vibrational dynamics of the device, complementing the effect of the vibrational modes on the electronic dynamics. We employ the scattering matrix approach to quantum transport to develop a unified theory of nanoelectromechanical systems out of equilibrium. For a slow mechanical mode, the current can be obtained from the Landauer-Büttiker formula in the strictly adiabatic limit. The leading correction to the adiabatic limit reduces to Brouwer's formula for the current of a quantum pump in the absence of the bias voltage. The principal result of the present paper are scattering matrix expressions for the current-induced forces acting on the mechanical degrees of freedom. These forces control the Langevin dynamics of the mechanical modes. Specifically, we derive expressions for the (typically nonconservative) mean force, for the (possibly negative) damping force, an effective "Lorentz" force which exists even for time reversal invariant systems, and the fluctuating Langevin force originating from Nyquist and shot noise of the current flow. We apply our general formalism to several simple models which illustrate the peculiar nature of the current-induced forces. Specifically, we find that in out of equilibrium situations the current induced forces can destabilize the mechanical vibrations and cause limit-cycle dynamics.

Electron-phonon scattering in topological insulator thin films

We present a theoretical study of electron-phonon scattering effects in thin films made of a strong topological insulator. Phonons are modelled by isotropic elastic continuum theory with stress-free boundary conditions, and the interaction with the helical surface Dirac fermions is mediated by the deformation potential. We determine the temperature-dependent electrical resistivity $ρ(T)$ and the quasiparticle decay rate $Γ(T)$ observable in photoemission. The low- and high-temperature power laws for both quantities are obtained analytically. Detailed estimates covering the full temperature range are provided for Bi$_2$Se$_3$.

Finite-size version of the excitonic instability in graphene quantum dots

By a combination of Hartree-Fock simulations, exact diagonalization, and perturbative calculations, we investigate the ground-state properties of disorder-free circular quantum dots formed in a graphene monolayer. Taking the reference chemical potential at the Dirac point, we study N \leq 15 interacting particles, where the fine structure constant α parametrizes the Coulomb interaction. We explore three different theoretical concepts: (i) Sucher's positive projection ("no-pair") approach, (ii) a more general Hamiltonian conserving both N and the number of additional electron-hole pairs, and (iii) the full quantum electrodynamics (QED) problem, where only N is conserved. We find that electron-hole pair production is important for α 1. This corresponds to a reconstruction of the filled Dirac sea and is a finite-size version of the bulk excitonic instability. We also address the effects of an orbital magnetic field.

Scattering theory of current-induced forces in mesoscopic systems

We develop a scattering theory of current-induced forces exerted by the conduction electrons of a general mesoscopic conductor on slow "mechanical" degrees of freedom. Our theory describes the current-induced forces both in and out of equilibrium in terms of the scattering matrix of the phase-coherent conductor. Under general nonequilibrium conditions, the resulting mechanical Langevin dynamics is subject to both non-conservative and velocity-dependent Lorentz-like forces, in addition to (possibly negative) friction. We illustrate our results with a two-mode model inspired by hydrogen molecules in a break junction which exhibits limit-cycle dynamics of the mechanical modes.

Electron-phonon scattering in topological insulators

We formulate and apply a theory of electron-phonon interactions for the surface state of a strong topological insulator. Phonons are modelled using an isotropic elastic continuum theory with stress-free boundary conditions and interact with the Dirac surface fermions via the deformation potential. We discuss the temperature dependence of the quasi-particle lifetime in photoemission and of the surface resistivity.

Signatures of Wigner molecule formation in interacting Dirac fermion quantum dots

We study $N$ interacting massless Dirac fermions confined in a two-dimensional quantum dot. Physical realizations of this problem include a graphene monolayer and the surface state of a strong topological insulator. We consider both a magnetic confinement and an infinite mass confinement. The ground state energy is computed as a function of the effective interaction parameter $α$ from the Hartree-Fock approximation and, alternatively, by employing the Müller exchange functional. For N=2, we compare those approximations to exact diagonalization results. The Hartree-Fock energies are highly accurate for the most relevant interaction range $α\alt 2$, but the Müller functional leads to an unphysical instability when $α\agt 0.756$. Up to 20 particles were studied using Hartree-Fock calculations. Wigner molecule formation was observed for strong but realistic interactions, accompanied by a rich peak structure in the addition energy spectrum.

Exact solution of the three-boson problem at vanishing energy

A zero range approach is used to model resonant two-body interactions between three identical bosons. A dimensionless phase parametrizes the three-body boundary condition while the scattering length enters the Bethe-Peierls boundary condition. The model is solved exactly at zero energy for any value of the scattering length, positive or negative. From this solution, an analytical expression for the rate of three-body recombination to the universal shallow dimer is extracted.
