Low-energy theory and RKKY interaction for interacting quantum wires with Rashba spin-orbit coupling

We present the effective low-energy theory for interacting 1D quantum wires subject to Rashba spin-orbit coupling. Under a one-loop renormalization group scheme including all allowed interaction processes for not too weak Rashba coupling, we show that electron-electron backscattering is an irrelevant perturbation. Therefore no gap arises and electronic transport is described by a modified Luttinger liquid theory. As an application of the theory, we discuss the RKKY interaction between two magnetic impurities. Interactions are shown to induce a slower power-law decay of the RKKY range function than the usual 1D noninteracting $\cos(2k_F x)/|x|$ law. Moreover, in the noninteracting Rashba wire, the spin-orbit coupling causes a twisted (anisotropic) range function with several different spatial oscillation periods. In the interacting case, we show that one special oscillation period leads to the slowest decay, and therefore dominates the RKKY interaction for large separation.

Artifical atoms in interacting graphene quantum dots

We describe the theory of few Coulomb-correlated electrons in a magnetic quantum dot formed in graphene. While the corresponding nonrelativistic (Schrödinger) problem is well understood, a naive generalization to graphene's "relativistic" (Dirac-Weyl) spectrum encounters divergencies and is ill-defined. We employ Sucher's projection formalism to overcome these problems. Exact diagonalization results for the two-electron quantum dot, i.e., the artificial helium atom in graphene, are presented.

Critical Josephson current through a bistable single-molecule junction

We compute the critical Josephson current through a single-molecule junction. As a model for a molecule with a bistable conformational degree of freedom, we study an interacting single-level quantum dot coupled to a two-level system and weakly connected to two superconducting electrodes. We perform a lowest-order perturbative calculation of the critical current and show that it can significantly change due to the two-level system. In particular, the π-junction behavior, generally present for strong interactions, can be completely suppressed.

Nonequilibrium dephasing in Coulomb blockade quantum dots

We present a theory of zero-bias anomalies and dephasing rates for a Coulomb-blockaded quantum dot, driven out of equilibrium by coupling to voltage biased source and drain leads. We interpret our results in terms of the statistics of voltage fluctuations in the system.

Analytical solution of the bosonic three-body problem

We revisit the problem of three identical bosons in free space, which exhibits a universal hierarchy of bound states (Efimov trimers). Modelling a narrow Feshbach resonance within a two-channel description, we map the integral equation for the three-body scattering amplitude to a one-dimensional Schrödinger-type single-particle equation, where an analytical solution of exponential accuracy is obtained. We give exact results for the trimer binding energies, the three-body parameter, the threshold to the three-atom continuum, and the recombination rate.

Electron-electron interaction effects in quantum point contacts

We consider interaction effects in quantum point contacts on the first quantization plateau, taking into account all non momentum-conserving processes. We compute low-temperature linear and non-linear conductance, shot noise, and thermopower by perturbation theory, and show that they are consistent with experimental observations on the so-called "0.7 anomaly". The full temperature-dependent conductance is obtained from self-consistent second-order perturbation theory and approaches ~ e^2/h at higher temperatures, but still smaller than the Fermi temperature.

From Luttinger liquid to Altshuler-Aronov anomaly in multi-channel quantum wires

A crossover theory connecting Altshuler-Aronov electron-electron interaction corrections and Luttinger liquid behavior in quasi-1D disordered conductors has been formulated. Based on an interacting non-linear sigma model, we compute the tunneling density of states and the interaction correction to the conductivity, covering the full crossover.

Destruction of interference by many-body interactions in cold atomic Bose gases

We study the effects of many-body interactions on the interference in a Mach-Zehnder interferometer for matter waves of ultracold Bose atoms. After switching off an axial trapping potential, the thermal initial wavepacket expands, and subsequently interference fringes may be observed in a circular 1D trap. These are computed for axial harmonic or $δ$-function traps, and for interaction strengths from the Thomas-Fermi regime to the Tonks-Girardeau limit. It is shown that many-body correlations in a realistic setup destroy interference to a large degree. Analytical expressions allowing to infer the observability of phase coherence and interference are provided.

Spin-dependent transport in a Luttinger liquid

We develop a detailed theory for spin transport in a one-dimensional quantum wire described by Luttinger liquid theory. A hydrodynamic description for the quantum wire is supplemented by boundary conditions taking into account the exchange coupling between the magnetization of ferromagnetic reservoirs and the boundary magnetization in the wire. Spin-charge separation is shown to imply drastic and qualitative consequences for spin-dependent transport. In particular, the spin accumulation effect is quenched except for fine-tuned parameter regimes. We propose several feasible setups involving an external magnetic field to detect this phenomenon in transport experiments on single-wall carbon nanotubes. In addition, electron-electron backscattering processes, which do not have an important effect on thermodynamic properties or charge transport, are shown to modify spin-dependent transport through long quantum wires in a crucial way.

Spin transport in interacting quantum wires and carbon nanotubes

We present a general formulation of spin-dependent transport through a clean one-dimensional interacting quantum wire or carbon nanotube, connected to non-collinear ferromagnets via tunnel junctions. We show that the low energy description of each junction is given by a conformally-invariant boundary condition representing *exchange coupling*, in addition to a pair of electron tunneling operators. The effects of the exchange coupling are strongly enhanced by interactions, leading to a dramatic suppression of spin accumulation. This is a direct signature of spin-charge separation in a Luttinger liquid. Furthermore, we demonstrate that magnetic polarization can lead to oscillations in the non-linear current-voltage relation. This phenomena is a surprising purely nonequilibrium effect due to backscattering interactions, which are thus dangerously marginally irrelevant in the repulsively-interacting Luttinger liquid.

Applying voltage sources to a Luttinger liquid with arbitrary transmission

The Landauer approach to transport in mesoscopic conductors has been generalized to allow for strong electronic correlations in a single-channel quantum wire. We describe in detail how to account for external voltage sources in adiabatic contact with a quantum wire containing a backscatterer of arbitrary strength. Assuming that the quantum wire is in the Luttinger liquid state, voltage sources lead to radiative boundary conditions applied to the displacement field employed in the bosonization scheme. We present the exact solution of the transport problem for arbitrary backscattering strength at the special Coulomb interaction parameter g=1/2.

Correlated transport and non-Fermi liquid behavior in single-wall carbon nanotubes

We derive the effective low-energy theory for single-wall carbon nanotubes including the Coulomb interactions among electrons. The generic model found here consists of two spin-1/2 fermion chains which are coupled by the interaction. We analyze the theory using bosonization, renormalization-group techniques, and Majorana refermionization. Several experimentally relevant consequences of the breakdown of Fermi liquid theory observed here are discussed in detail, e.g., magnetic instabilities, anomalous conductance laws, and impurity screening profiles.

Nonequilibrium transport for crossed Luttinger liquids

Transport through two one-dimensional interacting metals (Luttinger liquids) coupled together at a single point is analyzed. The dominant coupling mechanism is shown to be of electrostatic nature. Describing the voltage sources by boundary conditions then allows for the full solution of the transport problem. For weak Coulomb interactions, transport is unperturbed by the coupling. In contrast, for strong interactions, unusual nonlinear conductance laws characteristic for the correlated system can be observed.

Scaling and criticality of the Kondo effect in a Luttinger liquid

A quantum Monte Carlo simulation method has been developed and applied to study the critical behavior of a single Kondo impurity in a Luttinger liquid. This numerically exact method has no finite-size limitations and allows to simulate the whole temperature range. Focusing on the impurity magnetic susceptibility, we determine the scaling functions, in particular for temperatures well below the Kondo temperature. In the absence of elastic potential scattering, we find Fermi-liquid behavior for strong electron-electron interactions, g_c < 1/2, and anomalous power laws for 1/2<g_c < 1, where g_c is the correlation parameter of the Luttinger liquid. These findings resolve a recent controversy. If elastic potential scattering is present, we find a logarithmically divergent impurity susceptibility at g_c<1/2 which can be rationalized in terms of the two-channel Kondo model.

Electroneutrality and the Friedel sum rule in a Luttinger liquid

Screening in one-dimensional metals is studied for arbitrary electron-electron interactions. It is shown that for finite-range interactions (Luttinger liquid) electroneutrality is violated. This apparent inconsistency can be traced to the presence of external screening gates responsible for the effectively short-ranged Coulomb interactions. We also draw attention to the breakdown of linear screening for wavevectors close to 2 K_f.

Effective low-energy theory for correlated carbon nanotubes

The low-energy theory for single-wall carbon nanotubes including Coulomb interactions is derived and analyzed. It describes two fermion chains without interchain hopping but coupled in a specific way by the interaction. The strong-coupling properties are studied by bosonization, and consequences for experiments on single armchair nanotubes are discussed.

Coulomb charging energy for arbitrary tunneling strength

The Coulomb energy of a small metallic island coupled to an electrode by a tunnel junction is investigated. We employ Monte Carlo simulations to determine the effective charging energy for arbitrary tunneling strength. For small tunneling conductance, the data agree with analytical results based on a perturbative treatment of electron tunneling, while for very strong tunneling recent semiclassical results for large conductance are approached. The data allow for an identification of the range of validity of various analytical predictions.

Exact Fermi-edge singularity exponent in a Luttinger liquid

We report the exact calculation of the Fermi-edge singularity exponent for correlated electrons in one dimension (Luttinger liquid). Focusing on the special interaction parameter g=1/2, the asymptotic long-time behavior can be obtained using the Wiener-Hopf method. The result confirms the previous assumption of an open boundary fixed point. In addition, a dynamic k-channel Kondo impurity is studied via Abelian bosonization for k=2 and k=4. It is shown that the corresponding orthogonality exponents are related to the orthogonality exponent in a Luttinger liquid.
