The Cosmological constant and the Wheeler-DeWitt Equation

We discuss how to extract information about the cosmological constant from the Wheeler-DeWitt equation, considered as an eigenvalue of a Sturm-Liouville problem. The equation is approximated to one loop with the help of a variational approach with Gaussian trial wave functionals. A canonical decomposition of modes is used to separate transverse-traceless tensors (graviton) from ghosts and scalar. We show that no ghosts appear in the final evaluation of the cosmological constant. A zeta function regularization is used to handle with divergences. A renormalization procedure is introduced to remove the infinities together with a renormalization group equation. A brief discussion on the extension to a $f(R)$ theory is considered.

Point-like sources and the scale of quantum gravity

We review the General Relativistic model of a (quasi) point-like particle represented by a massive shell of neutral matter which has vanishing total energy in the small-volume limit. We then show that, by assuming a Generalised Uncertainty Principle, which implies the existence of a minimum length of the order of the Planck scale, the total energy instead remains finite and equal to the shell's proper mass both for very heavy and very light particles. This suggests that the quantum structure of space-time might be related to the classical Equivalence Principle and possible implications for the late stage of evaporating black holes are briefly mentioned.

Naked Singularity in a Modified Gravity Theory

The cosmological constant induced by quantum fluctuation of the graviton on a given background is considered as a tool for building a spectrum of different geometries. In particular, we apply the method to the Schwarzschild background with positive and negative mass parameter. In this way, we put on the same level of comparison the related naked singularity (-M) and the positive mass wormhole. We discuss how to extract information in the context of a f(R) theory. We use the Wheeler-De Witt equation as a basic equation to perform such an analysis regarded as a Sturm-Liouville problem . The application of the same procedure used for the ordinary theory, namely f(R)=R, reveals that to this approximation level, it is not possible to classify the Schwarzschild and its naked partner into a geometry spectrum.

The induced Cosmological Constant as a tool for exploring geometries

The cosmological constant induced by quantum fluctuation of the graviton on a given background is considered as a tool for building a spectrum of different geometries. In particular, we apply the method to the Schwarzschild background with positive and negative mass parameter. In this way, we put on the same level of comparison the related naked singularity (-M) and the positive mass wormhole. We use the Wheeler-De Witt equation as a basic equation to perform such an analysis regarded as a Sturm-Liouville problem . The cosmological constant is considered as the associated eigenvalue. The used method to study such a problem is a variational approach with Gaussian trial wave functionals. We approximate the equation to one loop in a Schwarzschild background. A zeta function regularization is involved to handle with divergences. The regularization is closely related to the subtraction procedure appearing in the computation of Casimir energy in a curved background. A renormalization procedure is introduced to remove the infinities together with a renormalization group equation.

Self-sustained traversable wormholes in noncommutative geometry

In this work, we find exact wormhole solutions in the context of noncommutative geometry, and further explore their physical properties and characteristics. The energy density of these wormhole geometries is a smeared and particle-like gravitational source, where the mass is diffused throughout a region of linear dimension $\sqrtα$ due to the intrinsic uncertainty encoded in the coordinate commutator. Furthermore, we also analyze these wormhole geometries considering that the equation governing quantum fluctuations behaves as a backreaction equation. In particular, the energy density of the graviton one loop contribution to a classical energy in a traversable wormhole background and the finite one loop energy density is considered as a self-consistent source for these wormhole geometries. Interesting solutions are found for an appropriate range of the parameters, validating the perturbative computation introduced in this semi-classical approach.

Phantom stars and topology change

In this work, we consider time-dependent dark energy star models, with an evolving parameter $ω$ crossing the phantom divide, $ω=-1$. Once in the phantom regime, the null energy condition is violated, which physically implies that the negative radial pressure exceeds the energy density. Therefore, an enormous negative pressure in the center may, in principle, imply a topology change, consequently opening up a tunnel and converting the dark energy star into a wormhole. The criteria for this topology change are discussed, in particular, we consider the Morse Index analysis and a Casimir energy approach involving quasi-local energy difference calculations that may reflect or measure the occurrence of a topology change. We denote these exotic geometries consisting of dark energy stars (in the phantom regime) and phantom wormholes as phantom stars. The final product of this topological change, namely, phantom wormholes, have far-reaching physical and cosmological implications, as in addition to being used for interstellar shortcuts, an absurdly advanced civilization may manipulate these geometries to induce closed timelike curves, consequently violating causality.

Extracting the Maxwell charge from the Wheeler-DeWitt equation

We consider the Wheeler-De Witt equation as a device for finding eigenvalues of a Sturm-Liouville problem. In particular, we will focus our attention on the electric (magnetic) Maxwell charge. In this context, we interpret the Maxwell charge as an eigenvalue of the Wheeler-De Witt equation generated by the gravitational field fluctuations. A variational approach with Gaussian trial wave functionals is used as a method to study the existence of such an eigenvalue. We restrict the analysis to the graviton sector of the perturbation. We approximate the equation to one loop in a Schwarzschild background and a zeta function regularization is involved to handle with divergences. The regularization is closely related to the subtraction procedure appearing in the computation of Casimir energy in a curved background. A renormalization procedure is introduced to remove the infinities together with a renormalization group equation.

Extracting the Cosmological Constant from the Wheeler DeWitt Equation in a Modified Gravity Theory

We discuss how to extract information about the cosmological constant from the Wheeler-DeWitt equation, considered as an eigenvalue of a Sturm-Liouville problem. Self sustained phantom wormholes in semi-classical gravity

A possible candidate for the late time accelerated expanding Universe is phantom energy, which possesses rather bizarre properties, such as the prediction of a Big Rip singularity and the violation of the null energy condition. The latter is a fundamental ingredient of traversable wormholes, and it has been shown that phantom energy may indeed sustain these exotic geometries. Inspired by the evolving dark energy parameter crossing the phantom divide, we consider in this work a varying equation of state parameter dependent on the radial coordinate, i.e., $ω(r)=p(r)/ρ(r)$. We shall impose that phantom energy is concentrated in the neighborhood of the throat, to ensure the flaring out condition, and several models are analyzed. We shall also consider the possibility that these phantom wormholes be sustained by their own quantum fluctuations. The energy density of the graviton one loop contribution to a classical energy in a phantom wormhole background and the finite one loop energy density are considered as a self-consistent source for these wormhole geometries. The latter semi-classical approach prohibits solutions with a constant equation of state parameter, which further motivates the imposition of a radial dependent parameter, $ω(r)$, and only permits solutions with a steep positive slope proportional to the radial derivative of the equation of state parameter, evaluated at the throat. The size of the wormhole throat as a function of the relevant parameters is also explored.

Self sustained traversable wormholes and the equation of state

We compute the graviton one loop contribution to a classical energy in a \textit{traversable} wormhole background. The form of the shape function considered is obtained by the equation of state $p=ωρ$. We investigate the size of the wormhole as a function of the parameter $ω$. The investigation is evaluated by means of a variational approach with Gaussian trial wave functionals. A zeta function regularization is involved to handle with divergences. A renormalization procedure is introduced and the finite one loop energy is considered as a \textit{self-consistent} source for the traversable wormhole. The case of the phantom region is briefly discussed.

Black hole pair creation and the stability of flat space

We extend the Gross-Perry-Yaffe approach of hot flat space instability to Minkowski space. This is done by a saddle point approximation of the partition function in a Schwarzschild wormhole background which is coincident with an eternal black hole. The appearance of an instability in the whole manifold is here interpreted as a black hole pair creation.

How Spacetime Foam modifies the brick wall

We re-examine the brick-wall model in the context of spacetime foam. In particular we consider a foam composed by wormholes of different sizes filling the black hole horizon. The contribution of such wormholes is computed via a scale invariant distribution. We obtain that the brick wall divergence appears to be logarithmic when the cutoff is sent to zero.

A simple model of spacetime foam, made by spherically symmetric wormholes, with or without a cosmological term is proposed. The black hole area quantization and its consequences are examined in this context. We open the possibility of probing Lorentz symmetry in this picture.
