Distorting General Relativity: Gravity's Rainbow and f(R) theories at work

We compute the Zero Point Energy in a spherically symmetric background combining the high energy distortion of Gravity's Rainbow with the modification induced by a f(R) theory. Here f(R) is a generic analytic function of the Ricci curvature scalar R in 4D and in 3D. The explicit calculation is performed for a Schwarzschild metric. Due to the spherically symmetric property of the Schwarzschild metric we can compare the effects of the modification induced by a f(R) theory in 4D and in 3D. We find that the final effect of the combined theory is to have finite quantities that shift the Zero Point Energy. In this context we setup a Sturm-Liouville problem with the cosmological constant considered as the associated eigenvalue. The eigenvalue equation is a reformulation of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation which is analyzed by means of a variational approach based on gaussian trial functionals. With the help of a canonical decomposition, we find that the relevant contribution to one loop is given by the graviton quantum fluctuations around the given background. A final discussion on the connection of our result with the observed cosmological constant is also reported.

Finite Zero Point Gravitational Energy in the context of Modified Dispersion Relations

We compute the Zero Point Energy in a spherically symmetric background distorted at high energy as predicted by Gravity's Rainbow. In this context we setup a Sturm-Liouville problem with the cosmological constant considered as the associated eigenvalue. The eigenvalue equation is a reformulation of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation. We find that the ordinary divergences can here be handled by an appropriate choice of the rainbow's functions, in contrast to what happens in other conventional approaches.

Self-sustained traversable wormholes in modified gravity theories

We consider the possibility that wormhole geometries are sustained by their own quantum fluctuations, in the context of noncommutative geometry and Gravity's Rainbow models. More specifically, the energy density of the graviton one-loop contribution to a classical energy in a wormhole background is considered as a self-consistent source for wormholes. In this semi-classical context, we consider the effects of a smeared particle-like source in noncommutative geometry and of the Rainbow's functions in sustaining wormhole geometries.

Effects of Modified Dispersion Relations and Noncommutative Geometry on the Cosmological Constant Computation

We compute Zero Point Energy in a spherically symmetric background with the help of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation. This last one is regarded as a Sturm-Liouville problem with the cosmological constant considered as the associated eigenvalue. The graviton contribution, at one loop is extracted with the help of a variational approach together with Gaussian trial functionals. The divergences handled with a zeta function regularization are compared with the results obtained using a Noncommutative Geometry (NCG) and Modified Dispersion Relations (MDR). In both NCG and MDR no renormalization scheme is necessary to remove infinities in contrast to what happens in conventional approaches. Effects on photon propagation are briefly discussed.

Self Sustained Traversable Wormholes Induced by Gravity's Rainbow and Noncommutative Geometry

We compare the effects of Noncommutative Geometry and Gravity's Rainbow on traversable wormholes which are sustained by their own gravitational quantum fluctuations. Fixing the geometry on a well tested model, we find that the final result shows that the wormhole is of the Planckian size. This means that the traversability of the wormhole is in principle, but not in practice.

The cosmological constant as an eigenvalue of the Hamiltonian constraint in Horava-Lifshits theory

In the framework of Horava-Lifshitz theory, we study the eigenvalues associated with the Wheeler-DeWitt equation representing the vacuum expectation values associated with the cosmological constant. The explicit calculation is performed with the help of a variational procedure with trial wave functionals of the Gaussian type. We analyze both the case with the detailed balanced condition and the case without it. In the case without the detailed balance, we find the existence of an eigenvalue depending on the set of coupling constants (g2,g3) and (g4,g5,g6), respectively, and on the physical scale.

Modified Dispersion Relations: from Black-Hole Entropy to the Cosmological Constant

Quantum Field Theory is plagued by divergences in the attempt to calculate physical quantities. Standard techniques of regularization and renormalization are used to keep under control such a problem. In this paper we would like to use a different scheme based on Modified Dispersion Relations (MDR) to remove infinities appearing in one loop approximation in contrast to what happens in conventional approaches. In particular, we apply the MDR regularization to the computation of the entropy of a Schwarzschild black hole from one side and the Zero Point Energy (ZPE) of the graviton from the other side. The graviton ZPE is connected to the cosmological constant by means of of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation.

Self-sustained wormholes in modified dispersion relations

In this work, we consider the possibility that wormhole geometries are sustained by their own quantum fluctuations, in the context of modified dispersion relations. More specifically, the energy density of the graviton one-loop contribution to a classical energy in a wormhole background is considered as a self-consistent source for wormholes. In this semi-classical context, we consider specific choices for the Rainbow's functions and find solutions for wormhole geometries in the cis-planckian and trans-planckian regimes. In the former regime, the wormhole spacetimes are not asymptotically flat and need to be matched to an exterior vacuum solution. In the latter trans-planckian regime, we find that the quantum corrections are exponentially suppressed, which provide asymptotically flat wormhole geometries with a constant shape function, i.e., b(r)=r_t, where r_t is the wormhole throat. In addition to this analysis, we also fix the geometry by considering the behaviour of a specific shape function through a variational approach which imposes a local analysis to the problem at the wormhole throat. We further explore the respective parameter range of the Rainbow's functions, and find a good agreement with previous work.

Particle propagation and effective space-time in Gravity's Rainbow

Basing on the results obtained in a our previous study on Gravity's Rainbow, we determine the quantum corrections to the space-time metric for the Schwarzschild and the de Sitter background, respectively. We analyze how quantum fluctuations alter these metrics inducing modifications on the propagation of test particles. Significantly enough we find that quantum corrections can become relevant not only for particles approaching the Planck energy but, due to the one loop contribution, even for low-energy particles as far as Planckian length scales are considered. We briefly compare our results with others obtained in similar studies and with the recent experimental OPERA announcement of superluminal neutrino propagation.

A noncommutative approach to the cosmological constant problem

In this paper we study the cosmological constant emerging from the Wheeler-DeWitt equation as an eigenvalue of the related Sturm-Liouville problem. We employ Gaussian trial functionals and we perform a mode decomposition to extract the transverse-traceless component, namely, the graviton contribution, at one loop. We implement a noncommutative-geometry- induced minimal length to calculate the number of graviton modes. As a result, we find regular graviton fluctuation energies for the Schwarzschild, de Sitter, and anti-de Sitter backgrounds. No renormalization scheme is necessary to remove infinities, in contrast to what happens in conventional approaches.

Gravitational Zero Point Energy and the Induced Cosmological Constant

We discuss how to extract information about the cosmological constant from the Wheeler-DeWitt equation, considered as an eigenvalue of a Sturm-Liouville problem in a generic spherically symmetric background. The equation is approximated to one loop with the help of a variational approach with Gaussian trial wave functionals. A canonical decomposition of modes is used to separate transverse-traceless tensors (graviton) from ghosts and scalar. We show that no ghosts appear in the final evaluation of the cosmological constant. A zeta function regularization and a ultra violet cutoff are used to handle with divergences. A renormalization procedure is introduced to remove the infinities. We compare the result with the one obtained in the context of noncommutative geometries

Linearized stability analysis of gravastars in noncommutative geometry

In this work, we find exact gravastar solutions in the context of noncommutative geometry, and explore their physical properties and characteristics. The energy density of these geometries is a smeared and particle-like gravitational source, where the mass is diffused throughout a region of linear dimension $\sqrt{(α)}$ due to the intrinsic uncertainty encoded in the coordinate commutator. These solutions are then matched to an exterior Schwarzschild spacetime. We further explore the dynamical stability of the transition layer of these gravastars, for the specific case of $β=M^2/α<1.9$, where M is the black hole mass, to linearized spherically symmetric radial perturbations about static equilibrium solutions. It is found that large stability regions exist and, in particular, located sufficiently close to where the event horizon is expected to form.

Gravitational Zero Point Energy induces Physical Observables

We consider the contribution of Zero Point Energy on the induced Cosmological Constant and on the induced Electric/Magnetic charge in absence of matter fields. The method is applicable to every spherically symmetric background. Extensions to a generic $f(R) $ theory are also allowed. Only the graviton appears to be fundamental to the determination of Zero Point Energy.

Modified Dispersion Relations and Black Hole Entropy

We compute the black hole entropy in the context of the Modified Dispersion Relations using the brick wall model. An explicit dependence of the radial coordinate approaching the horizon is shown to analyze the behavior of the divergence. We find that, due to the modification of the density of states, the brick wall can be eliminated. By assuming a specific form for the radial coordinate $r(E/E_{P}) $, we examine a possible candidate for $r(E/E_{P}) $. A comparison with the 't Hooft approach is presented.

Wormholes or Gravastars?

The one loop effective action in a Schwarzschild background is here used to compute the Zero Point Energy (ZPE) which is compared to the same one generated by a gravastar. We find that only when we set up a difference between ZPE in these different background we can have an indication on which configuration is favored. Such a ZPE difference represents the Casimir energy. It is shown that the expression of the ZPE is equivalent to the one computed by means of a variational approach. To handle with ZPE divergences, we use the zeta function regularization. A renormalization procedure to remove the infinities together with a renormalization group equation is introduced. We find that the final configuration is dependent on the ratio between the radius of the wormhole augmented by the "brick wall" and the radius of the gravastar.

Running Cosmological Constant and Running Newton Constant in Modified Gravity Theories

We discuss how to extract information about the cosmological constant from the Wheeler-DeWitt equation, considered as an eigenvalue of a Sturm-Liouville problem in a de Sitter and Anti-de Sitter background. A zeta function regularization is used to handle with divergences. A renormalization procedure is introduced to remove the infinities together with a renormalization group equation. We apply this procedure on the induced cosmological constant $Λ$ and, as an alternative, on the Newton constant $G$. A brief discussion on the extension to a $f(R)$ theory is considered.
