Restoring Coherence Lost to a Slow Interacting Mesoscopic Bath

For a two-state quantum object interacting with a slow mesoscopic interacting spin bath, we show that a many-body solution of the bath dynamics conditioned on the quantum-object state leads to an efficient control scheme to recover the lost quantum-object coherence through disentanglement. We demonstrate the theory with the realistic problem of one electron spin in a bath of many interacting nuclear spins in a semiconductor quantum dot. The spin language is easily generalized to a quantum object in contact with a bath of interacting multi-level quantum units with the caveat that it is mesoscopic and its dynamics is slow compared with the quantum object.

Theory of electron spin decoherence by interacting nuclear spins in a quantum dot

We present a quantum solution to the electron spin decoherence by a nuclear pair-correlation method for the electron-nuclear spin dynamics under a strong magnetic field and a temperature high for the nuclear spins but low for the electron. The theory incorporates the hyperfine interaction, the intrinsic (both direct and indirect) nuclear interactions, and the extrinsic nuclear coupling mediated by the hyperfine interaction with the single electron in question. The last is shown to be important in free-induction decay (FID) of the single electron spin coherence. The spin echo eliminates the hyperfine-mediated decoherence but only reduces the decoherence by the intrinsic nuclear interactions. Thus, the decoherence times for single spin FID and ensemble spin echo are significantly different. The decoherence is explained in terms of quantum entanglement, which involves more than the spectral diffusion.

Stimulated and spontaneous optical generation of electron spin coherence in charged GaAs quantum dots

We report on the coherent optical excitation of electron spin polarization in the ground state of charged GaAs quantum dots via an intermediate charged exciton (trion) state. Coherent optical fields are used for the creation and detection of the Raman spin coherence between the spin ground states of the charged quantum dot. The measured spin decoherence time, which is likely limited by the nature of the spin ensemble, approaches 10 ns at zero field. We also show that the Raman spin coherence in the quantum beats is caused not only by the usual stimulated Raman interaction but also by simultaneous spontaneous radiative decay of either excited trion state to a coherent combination of the two spin states.

A Unified Theory of Consequences of Spontaneous Emission in a $Λ$ System

In a $Λ$ system with two nearly degenerate ground states and one excited state in an atom or quantum dot, spontaneous radiative decay can lead to a range of phenomena, including electron-photon entanglement, spontaneously generated coherence, and two-pathway decay. We show that a treatment of the radiative decay as a quantum evolution of a single physical system composed of a three-level electron subsystem and photons leads to a range of consequences depending on the electron-photon interaction and the measurement. Different treatments of the emitted photon channel the electron-photon system into a variety of final states. The theory is not restricted to the three-level system.

Ultrafast initialization and QND-readout of a spin qubit via control of nanodot-vacuum coupling

Ultrafast initialization enables fault-tolerant processing of quantum information while QND readout enables scalable quantum computation. By spatially assembling photon resonators and wave-guides around an n-doped nanodot and by temporally designing optical pump pulses, an efficient quantum pathway can be established from an electron spin to a charged exciton to a cavity photon and finally to a flying photon in the waveguide. Such control of vacuum-nanodot coupling can be exploited for ultrafast initialization and QND readout of the spin, which are particularly compatible with the optically driven spin quantum computers.

Theory of control of spin/photon interface for quantum networks

A cavity coupling a charged nanodot and a fiber can act as a quantum interface, through which a stationary spin qubit and a flying photon qubit can be inter-converted via cavity-assisted Raman process. This Raman process can be controlled to generate or annihilate an arbitrarily shaped single-photon wavepacket by pulse-shaping the controlling laser field. This quantum interface forms the basis for many essential functions of a quantum network, including sending, receiving, transferring, swapping, and entangling qubits at distributed quantum nodes as well as a deterministic source and an efficient detector of a single photon wavepacket with arbitrarily specified shape and average photon number. Numerical study of noise effects on the operations shows high fidelity.

Tunable terahertz emission from difference-frequency in biased superlattices

The terahertz emission from difference-frequency in biased superlattices is calculated with the excitonic effect included. Owing to the doubly resonant condition and the excitonic enhancement, the typical susceptibility can be as large as $10^{-5}$ m/V. The doubly resonant condition can always be realized by adjusting the bias voltage and the laser frequencies, thus the in-situ tunable emission is efficient in a range of several terahertz. Continuous wave operation with 1% quantum efficiency and $μ$W output power is feasible as the signal absorption in undoped superlattices is negligible.

Nonlinear optics of semiconductors under an intense terahertz field

A theory for nonlinear optics of semiconductors in the presence of an intense terahertz electric field is constructed based on the double-line Feynman diagrams, in which the nonperturbative effect of the intense terahertz field is fully taken into account through using the Floquet states as propagating lines in the Feynman diagrams.

Adiabatic stabilization of excitons in intense terahertz laser

High-precise calculation of near-infrared absorption and transient spectra in bulk semiconductors irradiated by an intense terahertz (THz) laser shows that, the ionization rate of the ground-state exciton, probed through the dynamic Fano resonance, may decrease with the increase of the THz laser intensity. This counterintuitive effect indicates the excitons are stabilized against the field-ionization. The much lower Rydberg energy and ``atomic unit'' of laser intensity for excitons, and the possibility of creating excitons from the ``vacuum state'' allow observing the excitonic stabilization in experiments, in contrast to the case of atomic stabilization.

Dynamic Fano Resonance of Quasienergy Excitons in Superlattices

The dynamic Fano resonance (DFR) between discrete quasienergy excitons and sidebands of their ionization continua is predicted and investigated in dc- and ac-driven semiconductor superlattices. This DFR, well controlled by the ac field, delocalizes the excitons and opens an intrinsic decay channel in nonlinear four-wave mixing signals.

Bloch Oscillation under a Bichromatic Laser: Quasi-Miniband Formation, Collapse, and Dynamical Delocalization and Localization

A novel DC and AC driving configuration is proposed for semiconductor superlattices, in which the THz AC driving is provided by an intense bichromatic cw laser. The two components of the laser, usually in the visible light range, are near but not exactly resonant with interband Wannier-Stark transitions, and their frequency difference equals the Wannier-Stark ladder spacing. Multi-photon processes with the intermediate states in the conduction (valence) band cause dynamical delocalization and localization of valence (conduction) electrons, and the corresponding formation and collapse of the quasi-minibands.
