Kleber's conjecture and complementary products of symmetric functions

We prove Kleber's rectangular-complement conjecture for Schur functions over an arbitrary commutative ring $R$, showing that, for a fixed rectangle, the products $s_\lambda s_{\lambda^\vee}$, indexed by unordered complementary pairs, are linearly independent in $\Lambda_R$. The proof rests on a general independence theorem for componentwise splittings, which asserts that for every partition $\theta$, the products $s_\alpha s_\beta$ are linearly independent as $\{\alpha,\beta\}$ ranges over unordered pairs of partitions satisfying $\alpha+\beta=\theta$. The independence of the products $s_\lambda s_{\lambda^\vee}$ also yields linear independence of the Koike--Terada universal-character products over any field, answering a question of Gao--Orelowitz--Yong. We also prove the analogous result for monomial symmetric functions over fields of characteristic zero, as well as integral linear independence over $\mathbb{Z}$.

The record statistic and forward stability of Schubert products

We initiate a probabilistic study of forward stability for products of Schubert polynomials through the record statistic (left-to-right maxima) of permutations. Building on the explicit record formula for forward stability obtained by Hardt and Wallach, we study random pairs of permutations drawn from three natural families: uniform permutations, Grassmannian permutations, and Boolean permutations. For each family, we determine record probabilities and use them to analyze the asymptotic behavior of forward stability. For uniform and Grassmannian permutations, we obtain asymptotics for the mean together with limiting distribution results. For Boolean permutations, we prove linear-order growth of the mean, and our analysis also produces an explicit time-inhomogeneous Markov chain that yields an exact linear-time uniform sampler. Beyond these cases, we prove that the record-set statistic is equidistributed on the avoidance classes of $132$ and $231$, and consequently the corresponding forward stability distributions coincide. We conclude with conjectures for numerous further permutation classes and a conjectural recursive criterion for when two avoidance classes have the same record-set distribution.

Comparability in Bruhat orders

We determine the sharp asymptotic scale of the probability that two uniformly random permutations are comparable in weak Bruhat order, showing that $\mathbb{P}(\sigma_1 \preceq_W \sigma_2)=\exp\Bigl(\bigl(-\tfrac12+o(1)\bigr)\,n\log n\Bigr)$. This significantly improves both of the best known bounds, due to Hammett and Pittel, which placed this probability between $\exp((-1+o(1))n\log n)$ and $\exp(-\Theta(n))$. We also improve the best known lower bound for strong Bruhat-order comparability, due to the same authors, by proving a subexponential lower bound. The Bruhat orders are natural partial orders on the symmetric group, appearing in wide-reaching settings including the geometry of flag manifolds, the representation theory of $\mathfrak{S}_{n}$, and the combinatorics of the permutohedron. To analyze weak Bruhat order, we combine classic analytic, tableau-theoretic, and poset-theoretic tools, including the Plancherel measure and the RSK bijection. For strong Bruhat order we construct large families where members are comparable with high probability. Our proof that members are comparable combines the tableau criterion with an associated random-walk-type deviation process.

A non-iterative straightening algorithm and orthogonality for skew Schur modules

We generalize Fulton's determinantal construction of Schur modules to the skew setting, providing an explicit and functorial presentation using only elementary linear algebra and determinantal identities, in parallel with the partition case. Building on the non-iterative straightening formula of the first author for partition shapes, we develop a non-iterative straightening algorithm for skew Schur modules that expresses arbitrary elements in a new D-basis with an explicit closed coefficient formula. We then show that this D-basis is the result of applying Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization to the semistandard tableau basis, which identifies a natural inner product on the skew Schur module and recasts straightening as an orthogonal projection.

Kohnert posets and polynomials of northeast diagrams

Kohnert polynomials and their associated posets are combinatorial objects with deep geometric and representation theoretic connections, generalizing both Schubert polynomials and type A Demazure characters. In this paper, we explore the properties of Kohnert polynomials and their posets indexed by northeast diagrams. We give separate classifications of the bounded, ranked, and multiplicity-free Kohnert posets for northeast diagrams, each of which can be computed in polynomial time with respect to the number of cells in the diagram. As an initial application, we specialize these classifications to simple criteria in the case of lock diagrams.

Orbit structures and complexity in Schubert and Richardson Varieties

The goal of this paper is twofold. Firstly, we provide a type-uniform formula for the torus complexity of the usual torus action on a Richardson variety, by developing the notion of algebraic dimensions of Bruhat intervals, strengthening a type $A$ result by Donten-Bury, Escobar and Portakal. In the process, we give an explicit description of the torus action on any Deodhar component as well as describe the root subgroups that comprise the component. Secondly, when a Levi subgroup in a reductive algebraic group acts on a Schubert variety, we exhibit a codimension preserving bijection between the Levi-Borel subgroup (a Borel subgroup in the Levi subgroup) orbits in the big open cell of that Schubert variety and torus orbits in the big open cell of a distinguished Schubert subvariety. This bijection has many applications including a type-uniform formula for the Levi-Borel complexity of the usual Levi-Borel subgroup action on a Schubert variety. We conclude by extending the Levi-Borel complexity results to a large class of Schubert varieties in the partial flag variety.

Levi-spherical Schubert varieties

We prove a short, root-system uniform, combinatorial classification of Levi-spherical Schubert varieties for any generalized flag variety $G/B$ of finite Lie type. We apply this to the study of multiplicity-free decompositions of a Demazure module into irreducible representations of a Levi subgroup.

A non-iterative formula for straightening fillings of Young diagrams

Young diagrams are fundamental combinatorial objects in representation theory and algebraic geometry. Many constructions that rely on these objects depend on variations of a straightening process that expresses a filling of a Young diagram as a sum of semistandard tableaux subject to certain relations. This paper solves the long standing open problem of giving a non-iterative formula for straightening a filling. We apply our formula to give a complete generalization of a theorem of Gonciulea and Lakshmibai.

Coxeter combinatorics and spherical Schubert geometry

For a finite Coxeter system and a subset of its diagram nodes, we define spherical elements (a generalization of Coxeter elements). Conjecturally, for Weyl groups, spherical elements index Schubert varieties in a flag manifold G/B that are spherical for the action of a Levi subgroup. We evidence the conjecture, employing the combinatorics of Demazure modules, and work of R. Avdeev-A. Petukhov, M. Can-R. Hodges, R. Hodges-V. Lakshmibai, P. Karuppuchamy, P. Magyar-J. Weyman-A. Zelevinsky, N. Perrin, J. Stembridge, and B. Tenner. In type A, we establish connections with the key polynomials of A. Lascoux- M.-P. Schützenberger, multiplicity-freeness, and split-symmetry in algebraic combinatorics. Thereby, we invoke theorems of A. Kohnert, V. Reiner-M. Shimozono, and C. Ross-A. Yong.

Proper elements of Coxeter groups

We extend the notion of proper elements to all Coxeter groups. For all infinite families of finite Coxeter groups we prove that the probability a random element is proper goes to zero in the limit. This proves a conjecture of the third author and A. Yong regarding the proportion of Schubert varieties that are Levi spherical for all infinite families of Weyl groups. We also enumerate the proper elements in the exceptional Coxeter groups.

Equations for GL invariant families of polynomials

We provide an algorithm that takes as an input a given parametric family of homogeneous polynomials, which is invariant under the action of the general linear group, and an integer $d$. It outputs the ideal of that family intersected with the space of homogeneous polynomials of degree $d$. Our motivation comes from open problems, which ask to find equations for varieties of cubic and quartic symmetroids. The algorithm relies on a database of specific Young tableaux and highest weight polynomials. We provide the database and the implementation of the database construction algorithm. Moreover, we provide a julia implementation to run the algorithm using the database, so that more varieties of homogeneous polynomials can easily be treated in the future.

Approximate counting of standard set-valued tableaux

We present a randomized algorithm for generating standard set-valued tableaux by extending the Green-Nijenhuis-Wilf hook walk algorithm. In the case of asymptotically rank two partitions, we use this algorithm to give a fully polynomial almost uniform sampler (FPAUS) for standard set-valued tableaux. This FPAUS is then used to construct a fully polynomial randomized approximation scheme (FPRAS) for counting the number of standard set-valued tableaux for such shapes. We also construct a FPAUS and FPRAS for standard set-valued tableaux when either the size of the partition or the difference between the maximum value and the size of the partition is fixed. Our methods build on the work of Jerrum-Valiant-Vazirani and provide a framework for constructing FPAUS's and FPRAS's for other counting problems in algebraic combinatorics.

Classification of Levi-spherical Schubert varieties

A Schubert variety in the complete flag manifold $GL_n/B$ is Levi-spherical if the action of a Borel subgroup in a Levi subgroup of a standard parabolic has a dense orbit. We give a combinatorial classification of these Schubert varieties. This establishes a conjecture of the latter two authors, and a new formulation in terms of standard Coxeter elements. Our proof uses the theory of key polynomials (type A Demazure module characters).

Proper permutations, Schubert geometry, and randomness

We define and study proper permutations. Properness is a geometrically natural necessary criterion for a Schubert variety to be Levi-spherical. We prove the probability that a random permutation is proper goes to zero in the limit.

Multiplicity-free skew Schur polynomials

We provide a non-recursive, combinatorial classification of multiplicity-free skew Schur polynomials. These polynomials are $GL_n$, and $SL_n$, characters of the skew Schur modules. Our result extends work of H. Thomas--A. Yong, and C. Gutschwager, in which they classify the multiplicity-free skew Schur functions.

Multiplicity-free key polynomials

The key polynomials, defined by A. Lascoux-M.-P. Schützenberger, are characters for the Demazure modules of type A. We classify multiplicity-free key polynomials. The proof uses two combinatorial models for key polynomials. The first is due to A. Kohnert. The second is by S. Assaf-D. Searles, in terms of quasi-key polynomials. Our argument proves a sufficient condition for a quasi-key polynomial to be multiplicity-free.

Sphericality and Smoothness of Schubert Varieties

We consider the action of the Levi subgroup of a parabolic subgroup that stabilizes a Schubert variety. We show that a smooth Schubert variety is a homogeneous space for a parabolic subgroup, or it has a smooth Schubert divisor. Further, we show that all smooth Schubert varieties in a (partial) flag variety of a rank two simple algebraic group are spherical.

Toroidal Schubert Varieties

Levi subgroup actions on Schubert varieties are studied. In the case of partial flag varieties, the horospherical actions are determined. This leads to a characterization of the toroidal and horospherical partial flag varieties with Picard number 1. In the more general case, we provide a set of necessary conditions for the action of a Levi subgroup on a Schubert variety to be toroidal. The singular locus of a (co)minuscule Schubert variety is shown to contain all the $L_{max}$-stable Schubert subvarieties, where $L_{max}$ is the standard Levi subgroup of the maximal parabolic which acts on the Schubert variety by left multiplication. In type A, the effect of the Billey-Postnikov decomposition on toroidal Schubert varieties is obtained.
