Sphericality and Smoothness of Schubert Varieties

We consider the action of the Levi subgroup of a parabolic subgroup that stabilizes a Schubert variety. We show that a smooth Schubert variety is a homogeneous space for a parabolic subgroup, or it has a smooth Schubert divisor. Further, we show that all smooth Schubert varieties in a (partial) flag variety of a rank two simple algebraic group are spherical.

Toroidal Schubert Varieties

Levi subgroup actions on Schubert varieties are studied. In the case of partial flag varieties, the horospherical actions are determined. This leads to a characterization of the toroidal and horospherical partial flag varieties with Picard number 1. In the more general case, we provide a set of necessary conditions for the action of a Levi subgroup on a Schubert variety to be toroidal. The singular locus of a (co)minuscule Schubert variety is shown to contain all the $L_{max}$-stable Schubert subvarieties, where $L_{max}$ is the standard Levi subgroup of the maximal parabolic which acts on the Schubert variety by left multiplication. In type A, the effect of the Billey-Postnikov decomposition on toroidal Schubert varieties is obtained.

A classification of spherical Schubert varieties in the Grassmannian

Let $L$ be a Levi subgroup of $GL_N$ which acts by left multiplication on a Schubert variety $X(w)$ in the Grassmannian $G_{d,N}$. We say that $X(w)$ is a spherical Schubert variety if $X(w)$ is a spherical variety for the action of $L$. In earlier work we provide a combinatorial description of the decomposition of the homogeneous coordinate ring of $X(w)$ into irreducible $L$-modules for the induced action of $L$. In this work we classify those decompositions into irreducible $L$-modules that are multiplicity-free. This is then applied towards giving a complete classification of the spherical Schubert varieties in the Grassmannian.

Free Resolutions of Some Schubert Singularities in the Lagrangian Grassmannian

In this paper we construct free resolutions of certain class of closed subvarieties of affine space of symmetric matrices (of a given size). Our class covers the symmetric determinantal varieties (i.e., determinantal varieties in the space of symmetric matrices), whose resolutions were first constructed by Józefiak-Pragacz-Weyman. Our approach follows the techniques developed in Free Resolutions of Some Schubert Singularities by Kummini-Lakshmibai-Sastry-Seshadri, and uses the geometry of Schubert varieties.

Levi Subgroup Actions on Schubert Varieties, Induced Decompositions of their Coordinate Rings, and Sphericity Consequences

Let $L_w$ be the Levi part of the stabilizer $Q_w$ in $GL_N$ (for left multiplication) of a Schubert variety $X(w)$ in the Grassmannian $G_{d,N}$. For the natural action of $L_w$ on $\mathbb{C}[X(w)]$, the homogeneous coordinate ring of $X(w)$ (for the Plücker embedding), we give a combinatorial description of the decomposition of $\mathbb{C}[X(w)]$ into irreducible $L_w$-modules; in fact, our description holds more generally for the action of the Levi part $L$ of any parabolic subgroup $Q$ that is contained in $Q_w$. This decomposition is then used to show that all smooth Schubert varieties, all determinantal Schubert varieties, and all Schubert varieties in $G_{2,N}$ are spherical $L_w$-varieties.
