Optical responses and optical activity of ultrathin films of topological insulator

We investigate the optical properties of an ultrathin film of a topological insulator in the presence of an in-plane magnetic field. We show that due to the combination of the overlap between the surface states of the two layers and the magnetic field, the optical conductivity can show strong anisotropy. This leads to the effective optical activity of the ultrathin film by influencing the circularly polarized incident light. Intriguingly, for a range of magnetic fields, the reflected and transmitted lights exhibit elliptic character. Even for certain values almost linear polarizations are obtained, indicating that the thin film can act as a polaroid in reflection. All these features are discussed in the context of the time reversal symmetry breaking as one of key ingredients for the optical activity.

Valley- and spin-filter in monolayer MoS$_2$

We propose a valley- and spin-filter based on a normal/ferromagnetic/normal molybdenum disulfide (MoS$_2$) junction where the polarizations of the valley and the spin can be inverted by reversing the direction of the exchange field in the ferromagnetic region. By using a modified Dirac Hamiltonian and the scattering formalism, we find that the polarizations can be tuned by applying a gate voltage and changing the exchange field in the structure. We further demonstrate that the presence of a topological term ($β$) in the Hamiltonian results in an enhancement or a reduction of the charge conductance depending on the value of the exchange field.

Valley- and spin-switch effects in molybdenum disulfide superconducting spin valve

We propose a hole-doped molybdenum disulfide (MoS$_2$) superconducting spin valve (F/S/F) hybrid structure in which the Andreev reflection process is suppressed for all incoming waves with a determined range of the chemical potential in ferromagnetic (F) region and the cross-conductance in the right F region depends crucially on the configuration of magnetizations in the two F regions. Using the scattering formalism, we find that the transport is mediated purely by elastic electron cotunneling (CT) process in a parallel configuration and changes to the pure crossed Andreev reflection (CAR) process in the low-energy regime, without fixing of a unique parameter, by reversing the direction of magnetization in the right F region. This suggests both valley- and spin-switch effects between the perfect elastic CT and perfect CAR processes and makes the nonlocal charge current to be fully valley- and spin-polarized inside the right F region where the type of the polarizations can be changed by reversing the magnetization direction in the right F region. We further demonstrate that the presence of the strong spin-orbit interaction $λ$ and an additional topological term ($β$) in the Hamiltonian of MoS$_2$ result in an enhancement of the charge conductance of the CT and CAR processes and make them to be present for long lengths of the superconducting region. Besides, we find that the thermal conductance of the structure with a small length of the highly doped superconducting region exhibits linear dependence on the temperature at low temperatures whereas it enhances exponentially at higher temperatures. In particular, we demonstrate that the thermal conductance versus the strength of the exchange field ($h$) in F region displays a maximum value at $h<λ$, which moves towards larger exchange fields by increasing the temperature.

Magnetoresistance of double layer hybrid system in tilted magnetic field

Magnetoresistance and Hall coefficient of a graphene layer are investigated in the presence of a tilted magnetic field. We consider the graphene layer is assembled by either another graphene layer or a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) and an interlayer electron-electron interaction is modeled within Random Phase Approximation. Our calculated magnetoresistances show different interlayer screening effects between decoupled graphene-graphene and graphene-2DEG systems. We also analyze the dependence of dielectric materials as well as the distance between layers on magnetoresistances. The angle dependence of the Hall coefficient is studied and we show that a quite large Hall resistivity occurs in the graphene layer.

Quantum capacitance and Landau parameters of massless Dirac fermions in graphene

We present extensive numerical results for the thermodynamic density of states (i.e. quantum capacitance) of a two-dimensional massless Dirac fermion fluid in a doped graphene sheet. In particular, by employing the random phase approximation, we quantify the impact of screening exerted by a metal gate located nearby a graphene flake. Finally, we calculate the spin- and circularly-symmetric Landau parameter, which can be experimentally extracted from independent measurements on the same setup of the quantum capacitance and quasiparticle velocity.

Intrinsic optical conductivity of modified-Dirac fermion systems

We analytically calculate the intrinsic longitudinal and transverse optical conductivities of electronic systems which govern by a modified-Dirac fermion model Hamiltonian for materials beyond graphene such as monolayer MoS$_2$ and ultrathin film of the topological insulator. We analyze the effect of a topological term in the Hamiltonian on the optical conductivity and transmittance. We show that the optical response enhances in the non-trivial phase of the ultrathin film of the topological insulator and the optical Hall conductivity changes sign at transition from trivial to non-trivial phases which has significant consequences on a circular polarization and optical absorption of the system.

Andreev reflection in monolayer MoS2

Andreev reflection in a monolayer molybdenum disulfide superconducting-normal (S/N) hybrid junction is investigated. We find, by using a modified-Dirac Hamiltonian and the scattering formalism, that the perfect Andreev reflection happens at normal incidence with $p$-doped S and N regions. The probability of the Andreev reflection and the resulting Andreev conductance, in this system, are demonstrated to be large in comparison with corresponding gapped graphene structure. We further investigate the effect of a topological term ($β)$ in the Hamiltonian and show that it results in an enhancement of the Andreev conductance with $p$-doped S and N regions, while in the corresponding structure with $n$-doped S region it is strongly reducible in comparison. This effect can be explained in terms of the dependence of the Andreev reflection probability on the sign of $β$ and the chemical potential in the superconducting region.

Valley polarized transport in strained graphene based Corbino disc

We study analytically and numerically the magnetotransport of strained graphene in a Corbino geometry gating in the presence of an external perpendicular magnetic field. The conductance of the Corbino disc of deformed graphene with a uniaxial and an inhomogeneous strain is calculated by using the Landauer-Büttiker method. We show that the oscillation period of the conductance as a function of the magnetic flux depends on uniaxial strain and the conductance sharply drops along the direction of graphene stretching. The conductance amplitude, on the other hand, can be manipulated by induced pseudomagnetic flux. A valley polarized regime, caused by the inhomogeneous strain, is obtained and in addition we find a wide energy interval in which the system is fully valley polarized.

Effective lattice Hamiltonian for monolayer MoS2 : Tailoring electronic structure with perpendicular electric and magnetic fields

We propose an effective lattice Hamiltonian for monolayer MoS$_2$ in order to describe the low-energy band structure and investigate the effect of perpendicular electric and magnetic fields on its electronic structure. We derive a tight-binding model based on the hybridization of the $d$ orbitals of molybdenum and $p$ orbitals of sulfur atoms and then introduce a modified two-band continuum model of monolayer MoS$_2$ by exploiting the quasi-degenerate partitioning method. Our theory proves that the low-energy excitations of the system are no longer massive Dirac fermions. It reveals a difference between electron and hole masses and provides trigonal warping effects. Furthermore, we predict a valley degeneracy breaking effect in the Landau levels. Besides, we also show that applying a gate voltage perpendicular to the monolayer modifies the electronic structure including the band gap and effective masses.

Electronic structure and layer-resolved transmission of bilayer graphene nanoribbon in the presence of vertical fields

Electronic properties of bilayer graphene are distinct from both the conventional two dimensional electron gas and monolayer graphene due to its particular chiral properties and excitation charge carrier dispersions. We study the effect of strain on the electronic structure, the edge-states and charge transport of bilayer graphene nanoribbon at zero-temperature. We demonstrate a valley polarized quantum Hall effect in biased bilayer graphene when the system is subjected to a perpendicular magnetic field. In this system a topological phase transition from a quantum valley Hall to a valley polarized quantum Hall phase can occur by tuning the interplanar strain. Furthermore, we study the layer-resolved transport properties by calculating the layer polarized quantity by using the recursive Green's function technique and show that the resulting layer polarized value confirms the obtained phases. These predictions can be verified by experiments and our results demonstrate the possibility for exploiting strained bilayer graphene in the presence of external fields for electronics and valleytronics devices.

Indirect exchange interaction between magnetic adatoms in a monolayer MoS2

We study the Ruderman-Kittle-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction in a monolayer MoS$_2$. We show that the rotation of the itinerant electron spin due to the spin-orbit coupling causes a twisted interaction between two magnetic adatoms which consists of different RKKY coupling terms, the Heisenberg, Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya and Ising interactions. We find that the interaction terms are very sensitive to the Fermi energy values and change dramatically from doped to undoped systems. A finite doping causes that all parts of the interaction oscillate with the distance of two magnetic impurities, $R$ and the interaction behaves like $R^{-2}$ for the long distance between two localized spins. We explore a beating pattern of oscillations of the RKKY interaction which occurs for the doped system.

Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interaction in biased bilayer graphene

We study the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction between two contact magnetic impurities placed on bilayer graphene (BLG). We compute the interaction mediated by the carriers of the pristine and biased BLG as well as the conduction electrons of the doped system. The results are obtained from the linear-response expression for the susceptibility written in terms of the integral over lattice Green's functions. For the unbiased system, we obtain some analytical expressions in terms of the Meijer G-functions, which consist of the product of two oscillatory terms, one coming from the interference between the two Dirac points and the second coming from the Fermi momentum. In particular, for the undoped BLG, the system exhibits the RKKY interaction commensurate with its bipartite nature as expected from the particle-hole symmetry of the system. Furthermore, we explore a beating pattern of oscillations of the RKKY interaction in a highly doped BLG system within the four-band continuum model. Besides, we discuss the discrepancy between the short-range RKKY interaction calculated from the two-band model and that obtained from the four-band continuum model. The final results for the applied gate voltage are obtained numerically and are fitted with the functional forms based on the results for the unbiased case. In this case, we show that the long-range behavior is scaled with a momentum that depends on Fermi energy and gate voltage, allowing the possibility of tuning of the RKKY interaction by gate voltage.

Anisotropic RKKY interaction in spin polarized graphene

We study the Ruderman-Kittle-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction in the presence of spin polarized two dimensional Dirac fermions. We show that a spin polarization along the z-axis mediates an anisotropic interaction which corresponds to a XXZ model interaction between two magnetic moments. For undoped graphene, while the $x$ part of interaction keeps its constant ferromagnetic sign, its $z$ part oscillates with the distance of magnetic impurities, $R$. A finite doping causes that both parts of the interaction oscillate with $R$. We explore a beating pattern of oscillations of the RKKY interaction along armchair and zigzag lattice directions, which occurs for some certain values of the chemical potential. The two characteristic periods of the beating are determined by inverse of the difference and the sum of the chemical potential and the spin polarization.

Electronic ground state properties of strained graphene

We consider the effect of the Coulomb interaction in strained graphene using tight-binding approximation together with the Hartree-Fock interactions. The many-body energy dispersion relation, anisotropic Fermi velocity renormalization and charge compressibility in the presence of uniaxial strain are calculated. We show that the quasiparticle quantities are sensitive to homogenous strain and indeed, to its sign. The charge compressibility is enhanced by stretching and suppressed by compressing a graphene sheet. We find a reduction of Fermi velocity renormalization along the direction of graphene deformation, in good agreement with the recent experimental observation.

Ground-state and dynamical properties of two-dimensional dipolar Fermi liquids

We study the ground-state properties of a two-dimensional spin-polarized fluid of dipolar fermions within the Euler-Lagrange Fermi-hypernetted-chain approximation. Our method is based on the solution of a scattering Schrödinger equation for the "pair amplitude" $\sqrt{g(r)}$, where $g(r)$ is the pair distribution function. A key ingredient in our theory is the effective pair potential, which includes a bosonic term from Jastrow-Feenberg correlations and a fermionic contribution from kinetic energy and exchange, which is tailored to reproduce the Hartree-Fock limit at weak coupling. Very good agreement with recent results based on quantum Monte Carlo simulations is achieved over a wide range of coupling constants up to the liquid-to-crystal quantum phase transition (QPT). Using a certain approximate model for the dynamical density-density response function, we furthermore demonstrate that: i) the liquid phase is stable towards the formation of density waves up to the liquid-to-crystal QPT and ii) an undamped zero-sound mode exists for any value of the interaction strength, down to infinitesimally weak couplings.

Theory of correlations in strongly interacting fluids of two-dimensional dipolar bosons

Ground-state properties of a two-dimensional fluid of bosons with repulsive dipole-dipole interactions are studied by means of the Euler-Lagrange hypernetted-chain approximation. We present a self-consistent semi-analytical theory of the pair distribution function $g(r)$ and ground-state energy of this system. Our approach is based on the solution of a zero-energy scattering Schrödinger equation for the "pair amplitude" $\sqrt{g(r)}$ with an effective potential from Jastrow-Feenberg correlations. We find excellent agreement with quantum Monte Carlo results over a wide range of coupling strength, nearly up to the critical coupling for the liquid-to-crystal quantum phase transition. We also calculate the one-body density matrix and related quantities, such as the momentum distribution function and the condensate fraction.

Plasmons and Coulomb drag in Dirac/Schroedinger hybrid electron systems

We show that the plasmon spectrum of an ordinary two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) hosted in a GaAs heterostructure is significantly modified when a graphene sheet is placed on the surface of the semiconductor in close proximity to the 2DEG. Long-range Coulomb interactions between massive electrons and massless Dirac fermions lead to a new set of optical and acoustic intra-subband plasmons. Here we compute the dispersion of these coupled modes within the Random Phase Approximation, providing analytical expressions in the long-wavelength limit that shed light on their dependence on the Dirac velocity and Dirac-fermion density. We also evaluate the resistivity in a Coulomb-drag transport setup. These Dirac/Schroedinger hybrid electron systems are experimentally feasible and open new research opportunities for fundamental studies of electron-electron interaction effects in two spatial dimensions.
