Tribimaximal Neutrino Mixing from A_4 Replication

Motivated by dimensional deconstruction, we propose a model of tribimaximal neutrino mixing based on A_4 x A_4 symmetry. In this model, the two triplet symmetry-breaking fields of conventional A_4 models are taken to transform under different A_4 group factors, but are not distinguished by any other quantum numbers. An additional bi-triplet flavon field breaks A_4 x A_4 to its diagonal subgroup. If the bi-triplet transforms under an additional Z_3 symmetry, we show that one can construct a general, renormalizable superpotential that yields the desired pattern of symmetry breaking. We identify the features that this model has in common with a deconstructed 5D theory in which A_4 is a subgroup of a continuous gauged flavor symmetry in the bulk.

Baryon Magnetic Moments in Alternate 1/N_c Expansions

Recent work shows not only the necessity of a 1/N_c expansion to explain the observed mass spectrum of the lightest baryons, but also that at least two distinct large N_c expansions, in which quarks transform under either the color fundamental or the two-index antisymmetric representation of SU(N_c), work comparably well. Here we show that the baryon magnetic moments do not support this ambivalence; they strongly prefer the color-fundamental 1/N_c expansion, providing experimental evidence that nature decisively distinguishes among 1/N_c expansions for this observable.

Baryons in QCD_{AS} at Large N_c: A Roundabout Approach

QCD_{AS}, a variant of large N_c QCD in which quarks transform under the color two-index antisymmetric representation, reduces to standard QCD at N_c = 3 and provides an alternative to the usual large N_c extrapolation that uses fundamental representation quarks. Previous strong plausibility arguments assert that the QCD_{AS} baryon mass scales as N_c^2; however, the complicated combinatoric problem associated with quarks carrying two color indices impeded a complete demonstration. We develop a diagrammatic technique to solve this problem. The key ingredient is the introduction of an effective multi-gluon vertex: a "traffic circle" or "roundabout" diagram. We show that arbitrarily complicated diagrams can be reduced to simple ones with the same leading N_c scaling using this device, and that the leading contribution to baryon mass does, in fact, scale as N_c^2.

Optimal Parametrization of Deviations from Tribimaximal Form of the Neutrino Mass Matrix

We obtain a general parametrization for the neutrino Majorana mass matrix in which all possible deviations from tribimaximal mixing are given by three complex parameters, and the deviation from each tribimaximal mixing eigenvector is identified with precisely two of them. This parametrization provides a useful tool for classifying the corrections to exact tribimaximal mixing in flavor models.

Pion Electroproduction Amplitude Relations in the 1/N_c Expansion

We derive expressions for pion electroproduction amplitudes in the 1/N_c expansion of QCD, and obtain from them linear relations between the electromagnetic multipole amplitudes that hold at all energies. The leading-order relations in 1/N_c compare favorably with available data (especially away from resonances), but the next-to-leading-order relations tend to provide only small or no improvement.

All you need is N: Baryon spectroscopy in two large N limits

The generalization of QCD to many colors is not unique; each distinct choice corresponds to a distinct 1/N_c expansion. The familiar 't Hooft N_c -> \infty limit places quarks in the fundamental representation of SU(N_c), while an alternative approach places quarks in its two-index antisymmetric representation. At N_c=3 these two 1/N_c expansions coincide. We compare their predictions for certain observables in baryon spectroscopy, particularly mass combinations organized according to SU(3) flavor breaking. Each large N_c limit generates an emergent spin-flavor symmetry that leads to the vanishing of particular linear combinations of baryon masses at specific orders in the expansions. Experimental evidence shows that these relations hold at the expected orders regardless of which large N_c limit one uses, suggesting the validity of either limit in the study of baryons. We also consider a hybrid large N_c limit in which one flavor is taken to transform in the two-index antisymmetric representation and the rest of the flavors are in the fundamental representation. While this hybrid large N_c limit is theoretically attractive, we show that for a wide class of observables it faces some phenomenological difficulties.

Production of the Smallest QED Atom: True Muonium (mu^+ mu^-)

The "true muonium" (mu^+ mu-) and "true tauonium" (tau^+ tau^-) bound states are not only the heaviest, but also the most compact pure QED systems. The rapid weak decay of the tau makes the observation of true tauonium difficult. However, as we show, the production and study of true muonium is possible at modern electron-positron colliders.

A Higher-Derivative Lee-Wick Standard Model

The Lee-Wick Standard Model assumes a minimal set of higher-derivative quadratic terms that produce a negative-norm partner for each Standard Model particle. Here we introduce additional terms of one higher order in the derivative expansion that give each Standard Model particle two Lee-Wick partners: one with negative and one with positive norm. These states collectively cancel unwanted quadratic divergences and resolve the hierarchy problem as in the minimal theory. We show how this next-to-minimal higher-derivative theory may be reformulated via an auxiliary field approach and written as a Lagrangian with interactions of dimension four or less. This mapping provides a convenient framework for studies of the formal and phenomenological properties of the theory.

The Pion Form Factor in AdS/QCD

Holographic QCD provides a unique framework in which to compute QCD observables. In this talk we summarize recent numerical work on computing the pion electromagnetic form factor using an AdS/QCD action that includes both spontaneous and explicit chiral symmetry breaking. We consider both hard- and soft-wall model results and develop an intermediate background that supports the best features of both. We also begin to see possible evidence in the fit for the presence of 1/N_c corrections.

Minimal Lee-Wick Extension of the Standard Model

We consider a minimal Lee-Wick (LW) extension to the Standard Model in which the fields providing the most important contributions to the cancellation of quadratic divergences are the lightest. Partners to the SU(2) gauge bosons, Higgs, top quark, and left-handed bottom quark are retained in the low-energy effective theory, which is valid up to approximately 10 TeV; the remaining LW partners appear above this cutoff and complete the theory in the ultraviolet. We determine the constraints on the low-energy spectrum from the electroweak parameters S and T, and find LW states within the kinematic reach of the LHC at the 95% confidence level.

Pion Form Factor in Improved Holographic QCD Backgrounds

We extend a recent numerical calculation of the pion electromagnetic form factor F_π(Q^2) in holographic QCD to study two important issues regarding the behavior of fields in the bulk. First, we show that using a chiral symmetry-breaking field formally satisfying the boundary conditions of the ``soft-wall'' model changes numerical results very little from the earlier calculation that ignores these constraints. Second, we use a background field that interpolates between ``hard-wall'' and ``soft-wall'' models to obtain an improved model that reproduces the desirable phenomenological features of both. In all cases, F_π$ for large Q^2 is shallower than data, an effect that can be cured by relaxing the fit to one of the static observables, particularly the decay constant f_π.

Pion Form Factors in Holographic QCD

Using a holographic dual model of QCD, we compute the pion electromagnetic form factor F_pi(Q^2) in the spacelike momentum transfer region, as well as pion couplings to vector mesons g_rho^(n) pi pi. Spontaneous and explicit chiral symmetry breaking are intrinsic features of this particular holographic model. We consider variants with both ``hard-wall'' and ``soft-wall'' infrared cutoffs, and find that the F_pi(Q^2) data tend to lie closer to the hard-wall model predictions, although both are too shallow for large Q^2. By allowing the parameters of the soft-wall model (originally fixed by observables such as m_rho) to vary, one finds fits that tend to agree better with F_pi(Q^2). We also compute the pion charge radius for a variety of parameter choices, and use the values of f^(n)_rho, g_{rho^(n) pi pi} and m^(n)_rho to observe the saturation of F_pi(0) by rho poles.

An Identity on SU(2) Invariants

We prove an identity [Eq. (1) below] among SU(2) 6j and 9j symbols that generalizes the Biedenharn-Elliott sum rule. We prove the result using diagrammatic techniques (briefly reviewed here), and then provide an algebraic proof. This identity is useful for studying meson-baryon scattering in which an extra isoscalar meson is produced.

1/N_c Corrections in Meson-Baryon Scattering

Corrections to meson/ground-state baryon scattering amplitudes in the 1/N_c expansion of QCD have previously been shown to be controlled by the t-channel difference |I_t - J_t| of isospin and angular momentum and by the change of hypercharge Y_t. Here we derive the corresponding expressions in the original scattering s channel, allowing for nonzero meson spin and nontrivial SU(3) flavor quantum numbers, and provide explicit examples of the crossing relevant for pi N --> rho N and K N scattering.

pi N --> Multi-pi N Scattering in the 1/N_c Expansion

We extend the 1/N_c expansion meson-baryon scattering formalism to cases in which the final state contains more than two particles. We first show that the leading-order large N_c processes proceed through resonant intermediate states (e.g., rho N or pi Delta). We then tabulate linear amplitude expressions for relevant processes and find that the pole structure of baryon resonances can be uniquely identified by their (non)appearance in eta N or mixed partial-wave pi Delta final states. We also show that quantitative predictions of pi N to pi Delta branching ratios predicted at leading order alone do not agree with measurements, but the inclusion of 1/N_c corrections is ample to explain the discrepancies.

Baryons and Large N_c in Happy Resonance

I discuss recent developments in the large N_c treatment of unstable baryon resonances and the scattering amplitudes in which they appear. These include pion photoproduction, extension to three-flavor processes, decoupling of large N_c artifacts, and combination of this approach with results of chiral symmetry.

Interplay of the Chiral and Large N_c Limits in pi N Scattering

Light-quark hadronic physics admits two useful systematic expansions, the chiral and 1/N_c expansions. Their respective limits do not commute, making such cases where both expansions may be considered to be especially interesting. We first study pi N scattering lengths, showing that (as expected for such soft-pion quantities) the chiral expansion converges more rapidly than the 1/N_c expansion, although the latter nevertheless continues to hold. We also study the Adler-Weisberger and Goldberger-Miyazawa-Oehme sum rules of pi N scattering, finding that both fail if the large N_c limit is taken prior to the chiral limit.

Decoupling Spurious Baryon States in the 1/N_c Expansion of QCD

We identify ``spurious'' states in meson-baryon scattering, those that appear in QCD for N_c > 3 but decouple for N_c = 3. The key observation is that the relevant flavor SU(3) Clebsch-Gordan coefficients contain factors of 1 - 3/N_c. We show that this method works even if SU(3) is badly broken. We also observe that resonant scattering poles lying outside naive quark model multiplets are not necessarily large N_c artifacts, and can survive via configuration mixing at N_c = 3.
