The Large N_c Baryon-Meson I_t = J_t Rule Holds for Three Flavors

It has long been known that nonstrange baryon-meson scattering in the 1/N_c expansion of QCD greatly simplifies when expressed in terms of t-channel exchanges: The leading-order amplitudes satisfy the selection rule I_t = J_t. We show that I_t = J_t, as well as Y_t = 0, also hold for the leading amplitudes when the baryon and/or meson contain strange quarks, and also characterize their 1/N_c corrections, thus opening a new front in the phenomenological study of baryon-meson scattering and baryon resonances.

Diquark Correlations from Nucleon Charge Radii

We argue that precise measurements of charge and magnetic radii can meaningfully constrain diquark models of the nucleon. We construct properly symmetrized, nonrelativistic three-quark wave functions that interpolate between the limits of a pointlike diquark pair and no diquark correlation. We find that good fits to the data can be obtained for a wide range of diquark sizes, provided that the diquark wave functions are close to those that reduce to a purely scalar state in the pointlike limit. A modest improvement in the experimental uncertainties will render a fit to the charge radii a more telling diagnostic for the presence of spatially correlated quark pairs within the nucleon.

Describing the Baryon Spectrum with 1/N_c QCD

This talk outlines recent advances using QCD in the 1/N_c limit aimed at understanding baryon scattering processes and their embedded short-lived baryon resonances. In this presentation we emphasize developing qualitative physical insight over presenting results of detailed calculations.

On the Existence of Heavy Pentaquarks: The large Nc and Heavy Quark Limits and Beyond

We present a very general argument that the analogue of a heavy pentaquark (a state with the quantum numbers of a baryon combined with an additional light quark and a heavy antiquark) must exist as a particle stable under strong interactions in the combined heavy quark and large Nc limits of QCD. Moreover, in the combined limit these heavy pentaquark states fill multiplets of SU(4)xO(8)xSU(2). We explore the question of whether corrections in the combined 1/Nc and 1/mQ expansions are sufficiently small to maintain this qualitative result. Since no model-independent way is known to answer this question, we use a class of ``realistic'' hadronic models in which a pentaquark can be formed via nucleon-heavy meson binding through a pion-exchange potential. These models have the virtue that they necessarily yield the correct behavior in the combined limit, and the long-distance parts of the interactions are model independent. If the long-distance attraction in these models were to predict bound states in a robust way (i.e., largely insensitive to the details of the short-range interaction), then one could safely conclude that heavy pentaquarks do exist. However, in practice the binding does depend very strongly on the details of the short-distance physics, suggesting that the real world is not sufficiently near the combined large Nc, mQ limit to use it as a reliable guide. Whether stable heavy pentaquarks exist remains an open question.

The 1/N_c Approach for Baryon Resonances

I give a brief overview of the model-independent analysis of unstable baryon resonances in the 1/N_c QCD expansion. This approach produces numerous surprising semi-quantitative phenomenological predictions that are supported by available observations.

Phenomenology of the Baryon Resonance 70-plet at Large N_c

We examine the multiplet structure and decay channels of baryon resonances in the large N_c QCD generalization of the N_c = 3 SU(6) spin-flavor 70. We show that this ``70'', while a construct of large N_c quark models, actually consists of five model-independent irreducible spin-flavor multiplets in the large N_c limit. The preferred decay modes for these resonances fundamentally depend upon which of the five multiplets to which the resonance belongs. For example, there exists an SU(3) ``8'' of resonances that is eta-philic and pi-phobic, and an ``8'' that is the reverse. Moreover, resonances with a strong SU(3) ``1'' component prefer to decay via a K-bar rather than via a pi. Remarkably, available data appears to bear out these conclusions.

SU(3) Baryon Resonance Multiplets in Large N_c QCD

We extend the recently developed treatment of baryon resonances in large N_c QCD to describe resonance multiplets collected according to the SU(3) flavor symmetry that includes strange quarks. As an illustration we enumerate the SU(3) partners of a hypothetical J^P = 1/2^{+/-} resonance in the SU(3) representation that reduces to 10-bar when N_c = 3, and reproduce results hitherto obtained only in the context of a large N_c quark picture. While these specific quantum numbers represent one favored set for the possible pentaquark state Theta^+ (1540), the method is applicable to baryon resonances with any quantum numbers.

Baryon Resonances in the 1/N_c Expansion

The 1/N_c expansion of QCD provides a valuable semiquantitative tool to study baryon scattering amplitudes and the short-lived baryon resonances embedded within them. A generalization of methods originally applied in chiral soliton models in the 1980's provides the key to deriving a rigorous 1/N_c expansion. One obtains model-independent relations among amplitudes that impose mass and width degeneracies among resonances of various quantum numbers. Phenomenological evidence confirms that patterns of resonant decay predicted by 1/N_c agree with data. One may extend the analysis to subleading orders in 1/N_c, where again agreement with data is evident, in both meson-baryon scattering and pion photoproduction.

Pion Photoproduction Amplitude Relations in the 1/N_c Expansion

We derive expressions for pion photoproduction amplitudes in the 1/N_c expansion of QCD, and obtain linear relations directly from this expansion that relate electromagnetic multipole amplitudes at all energies. The leading-order relations in 1/N_c compare favorably with available data, while the next-to-leading order relations seem to provide only a small improvement. However, when resonance parameters are compared directly, the agreement at O(1/N_c) or O(1/N_c^2) is impressive.

Pion-Nucleon Scattering Relations at Next-to-Leading Order in 1/N_c

We obtain relations between partial-wave amplitudes for pi-N-->pi-N and pi-N-->pi-Delta directly from large N_c QCD. While linear relations among certain amplitudes holding at leading order (LO) in 1/N_c were derived in the context of chiral soliton models two decades ago, the present work employs a fully model-independent framework based on consistency with the large N_c expansion. At LO we reproduce the soliton model results; however, this method allows for systematic corrections. At next-to-leading order (NLO), most relations require additional unknown functions beyond those appearing at leading order (LO) and thus have little additional predictive power. However, three NLO relations for the pi-N-->pi-Delta reaction are independent of unknown functions and make predictions accurate at this order. The amplitudes relevant to two of these relations were previously extracted from experiment. These relations describe experiment dramatically better than their LO counterparts.

SU(3) Clebsch-Gordan Coefficients for Baryon-Meson Coupling at Arbitrary N_c

We present explicit formulae for the SU(3) Clebsch-Gordan coefficients that are relevant for the couplings of large N_c baryons to mesons. In particular, we compute the Clebsch-Gordan series for the coupling of the octet (associated with mesons, and remains the correct representation at large N_c) to the large N_c analogs of the baryon octet and decuplet representations.

Baryons, IN_c

Excited baryons may be analyzed in the 1/N_c expansion as true resonances in scattering amplitudes. The key idea making this program possible is a generalization of methods originally applied to chiral soliton models in the 1980's. One finds model-independent relations among amplitudes that impose mass and width degeneracies among resonances of various quantum numbers. Phenomenological evidence demonstrates that patterns of resonant decay predicted by 1/N_c agree with data. The analysis can be extended to subleading orders in 1/N_c, where again agreement with data is evident.

Constraints on Natural MNS Parameters from |U_e3|

The MNS matrix structure emerging as a result of recent neutrino measurements strongly suggests two large mixing angles (solar and atmospheric) and one small angle (|U_e3| << 1). Especially when combined with the neutrino mass hierarchy, these values turn out to impose rather stringent constraints on possible flavor models connecting the three active fermion generations. Specifically, we show that an extremely small value of |U_e3| would require fine tuning of Majorana mass matrix parameters, particularly in the context of seesaw models.

Complete Analysis of Baryon Magnetic Moments in 1/N_c

We generate a complete basis of magnetic moment operators for the N_c = 3 ground-state baryons in the 1/N_c expansion, and compute and tabulate all associated matrix elements. We then compare to previous results derived in the literature and predict additional relations among baryon magnetic moments holding to subleading order in 1/N_c and flavor SU(3) breaking. Finally, we predict all unknown diagonal and transition magnetic moments to <= 0.15 mu_N accuracy, and suggest possible experimental measurements to improve the analysis even further.

Excited Baryon Decay Widths in Large N_c QCD

We study excited baryon decay widths in large N_c QCD. It was suggested previously that some spin-flavor mixed-symmetric baryon states have strong couplings of O(N_c^{-1/2}) to nucleons [implying narrow widths of O(1/N_c)], as opposed to the generic expectation based on Witten's counting rules of an O(N_c^0) coupling. The calculation obtaining these narrow widths was performed in the context of a simple quark-shell model. This paper addresses the question of whether the existence of such narrow states is a general property of large N_c QCD. We show that a general large N_c QCD analysis does not predict such narrow states; rather they are a consequence of the extreme simplicity of the quark model.

Partners of the Theta^+ in Large N_c QCD

A strangeness +1 exotic baryon Theta^+ has recently been seen in a number of experiments. We demonstrate that in large N_c QCD the existence of such a state implies the existence of S = +1 partner states with various spins and isospins but comparable masses. We discuss the spectroscopy of such states and possible channels in which they can be observed, based on the simple assumption that those states with pentaquark quantum numbers are unlikely to be large N_c artifacts.

Compatibility of Quark and Resonant Picture Excited Baryon Multiplets in 1/N_c

We demonstrate that the two major complementary pictures of large N_c baryon resonances--as single-quark orbital excitations about a closed-shell core [giving SU(2N_F) x O(3) multiplets], and as resonances in meson-baryon scattering amplitudes--are completely compatible in a specific sense: Both pictures give rise to a set of multiplets of degenerate states, for which any complete spin-flavor multiplet within one picture fills the quantum numbers of complete multiplets in the other picture. This result is demonstrated by: (i) straightforward computation of the lowest multiplets in both pictures; (ii) a study of the nature of quark excitations in a hedgehog picture; (iii) direct group-theoretical comparison of the constraints in the two pictures.
