Baryon Mass Splittings in the 1/N_c Expansion

The $I=0,1,2,3$ mass splittings of the spin-$1/2$ octet and spin-$3/2$ decuplet baryons are analyzed in the $1/\N$ expansion combined with perturbative flavor breaking. We show there is considerable experimental evidence that the baryon masses satisfy the hierarchy predicted by this expansion. Since flavor symmetry-breaking suppression factors alone are not sufficient to describe the observed hierarchy, we conclude that there is firm evidence for the $1/\N$ expansion in the baryon masses. Our analysis differs from non-relativistic $SU(6)$.

Determination of SU(6) Clebsch-Gordan Coefficients and Baryon Mass and Electromagnetic Moment Relations

We compute and tabulate the Clesbsch--Gordan coefficients of the $SU(6) \supset SU(3) \times SU(2)$ product ${\overline{\bf 56}} \otimes {\bf 56}$, which are relevant to the nonrelativistic spin-flavor symmetry of the lightest baryons. Under the assumption that the largest representation in this product, the ${\bf 2695}$, gives rise to operators in a chiral expansion that produce numerically small effects, we obtain a set of relations among the masses of the baryons, as well as among their magnetic dipole and higher multipole moments. We compare the mass relations to experiment, and find numerical predictions for the $Σ^0$-$Λ$ mass mixing parameter and eighteen of the twenty-seven magnetic moments in the ${\bf 56}$.

Baryon Masses at Second Order in Chiral Perturbation Theory

We analyze the baryon mass differences up to second order in chiral perturbation theory, including the effects of decuplet intermediate states. We show that the Coleman--Glashow relation has computable corrections of order $(m_d - m_u) m_s$. These corrections are numerically small, and in agreement with the data. We also show that corrections to the $Σ$ equal-spacing rule are dominated by electromagnetic contributions, and that the Gell-Mann--Okubo formula has non-analytic corrections of order $m_s^2 \ln m_s$ which cannot be computed from known matrix elements. We also show that the baryon masses cannot be used to extract model-independent information about the current quark masses.

Baryon decuplet mass relations in chiral perturbation theory

Baryon decuplet masses within an $SU(3)_L \times SU(3)_R$ chiral Lagrangian formalism are found to satisfy four relations at second order in flavor breaking. As a result, the one-loop corrections from Lagrangian terms up to first order in flavor breaking are observed to give finite and calculable corrections to these relations. The formal expressions for these corrections are presented, followed by numerical evaluations. We find consistency between the experimental values of breaking of the relations and the loop corrections of these relations as predicted by chiral perturbation theory.

Meson Mass Splittings in the Nonrelativistic Model

Mass splittings between isodoublet meson pairs and between $0^{-}$ and $1^{-}$ mesons of the same valence quark content are computed in a detailed nonrelativistic model. The field theoretic expressions for such splittings are shown to reduce to kinematic and Breit-Fermi terms in the nonrelativistic limit. Algebraic results thus obtained are applied to the specific case of the linear-plus-Coulomb potential, with resultant numbers compared to experiment.
