Necessity of spacetime shear for cosmological gravitational waves

We show that a general but shear-free perturbation of homogeneous and isotropic universes are necessarily silent, without any gravitational waves. We prove this in two steps. First we establish that a shear free perturbation of these universes are acceleration-free and the fluid flow geodesics of the background universe maps onto themselves in the perturbed universe. This effect then decouples the evolution equations of the electric and magnetic parts of the Weyl tensor in the perturbed spacetimes and the magnetic part no longer contains any tensor modes. Although the electric part, that drives the tidal forces, do have tensor modes sourced by the anisotropic stress, these modes have homogeneous oscillations at every point on a time slice without any wave propagation. We also show the presence of vorticity vector waves that are sourced by the curl of heat flux. This analysis shows the critical role of the shear tensor in generating cosmological gravitational waves in an expanding universe.

On homothetic Killing vectors in stationary axisymmetric vacuum spacetimes

In this paper we consider homothetic Killing vectors in the class of stationary axisymmetric vacuum (SAV) spacetimes, where the components of the vectors are functions of the time and radial coordinates. In this case the component of any homothetic Killing vector along the $z$ direction must be constant. Firstly, it is shown that either the component along the radial direction is constant or we have the proportionality $g_{ϕϕ}\propto g_{ρρ}$, where $g_{ϕϕ}>0$. In both cases, complete analyses are carried out and the general forms of the homothetic Killing vectors are determined. The associated conformal factors are also obtained. The case of vanishing twist in the metric, i.e., $ω= 0$ is considered and the complete forms of the homothetic Killing vectors are determined, as well as the associated conformal factors.

An investigation on gravitational entropy of cosmological models

In this paper, we investigate the entropy of the free gravitational field for a given epoch for some well-known isotropic and anisotropic cosmologies. We use the definition of gravitational entropy proposed by Clifton, Ellis, and Tavakol, where the 2-index square root of the 4-index Bel-Robinson tensor is taken to be the energy momentum tensor for the free gravity. We examine whether, in the vicinity of the initial singularity, the ratio of the energy density of free gravity to that of matter density goes to zero, validating Penrose's conjecture on Weyl curvature. Whenever this is true, the gravitational entropy increases monotonically with time, leading to structure formation. For the models considered by us, we identify the conditions for which the Weyl curvature hypothesis is valid, and the assumptions under which it is validated, or otherwise.

Matter shear and vorticity in conformally flat spacetimes

In this paper we consider conformally flat perturbations on the Friedmann Lemaitre Robertson Walker (FLRW) spacetime containing a general matter field. Working with the linearised field equations, we unearth some important geometrical properties of matter shear and vorticity and how they interact with the thermodynamical quantities in the absence of any free gravity powered by the Weyl curvature. As there are hardly any physically realistic rotating exact conformally flat solutions in general relativity, these covariant and gauge invariant results bring out transparently the role of vorticity in the linearised regime. Most interestingly, we demonstrate that the matter shear obeys a transverse traceless tensor wave equation, and the vorticity obeys a vector wave equation in this regime. These shear and vorticity waves replace the gravitational waves in the sense that they causally carry the information about local change in the curvature of these spacetimes.

Matching conditions in Locally Rotationally Symmetric spacetimes and radiating stars

We recast the well known Israel-Darmois matching conditions for Locally Rotationally Symmetric (LRS-II) spacetimes using the semitetrad 1+1+2 covariant formalism. This demonstrates how the geometrical quantities including the volume expansion, spacetime shear, acceleration and Weyl curvature of two different spacetimes are related at a general matching surface inheriting the symmetry, which can be timelike or spacelike. The approach is purely geometrical and depends on matching the Gaussian curvature of 2-dimensional sheets at the matching hypersurface. This also provides the constraints on the thermodynamic quantities on each spacetime so that they can be matched smoothly across the surface. As an example we regain the Santos boundary conditions and model of a radiating star matched to a Vaidya exterior in general relativity.

Tidal forces are gravitational waves

In this paper we show in a covariant and gauge invariant way that in general relativity, tidal forces are actually a hidden form of gravitational waves. This must be so because gravitational effects cannot occur faster than the speed of light. Any two body gravitating system, where the bodies are orbiting around each other, may generate negligible gravitational waves, but it is via these waves that non-negligible tidal forces (causing shape distortions) act on these bodies. Although the tidal forces are caused by the electric part of the Weyl tensor, we transparently show that some small time varying magnetic part of the Weyl tensor with non zero curl must be present in the system that mediates the tidal forces via gravitational wave type effects. The outcome is a new test of whether gravitational effects propagate at the speed of light.

Non-existence of expansion-free dynamical stars with rotation and spatial twist

Extending a previous work by the same authors, we investigate the existence of expansion-free dynamical stars with non-zero spatial twist and rotation and show that such stars cannot exist. Firstly, it is shown that a rotating expansion-free dynamical star with zero twist cannot exist. This is due to the fact that such stars cannot radiate and they are shear-free, in which case the energy density $ρ$ is time independent. Secondly, we prove that a non-rotating expansion-free dynamical star with non-zero spatial twist also cannot exist, as either the strong energy condition must be violated, i.e. $ρ+3p<0$, or the star must be shear-free in which case the star is static ($Θ=Ω=Σ=0$). Finally, if we insist that the rotation and spatial twist are simultaneously non-zero, then the star cannot be shear-free in which case we obtain a quadratic polynomial equation in $ϕ$ and $Σ$ with no real solutions. Therefore such stars cannot exist.

Some Result on Cosmological and Astrophysical Horizons and Trapped Surfaces

We study the evolution of horizons of black holes in the $1+1+2$ covariant setting and investigate various properties intrinsic to the geometry of the foliation surfaces of these horizons. This is done by interpreting formulations of various quantities in terms of the geometric and thermodynamic quantities. We establish a causal classification for horizons in different classes of spacetimes. We have also recovered results by Ben-Dov and Senovilla which put cut-offs on the equation of state parameter $σ$, determining the spacelike, timelike and non-expanding horizons in the the Robertson-Walker class of spacetimes. We show that stability of marginally trapped surfaces (MTS) in the Robertson-Walker spacetimes is only achievable under the conditions of negative pressure, and also classify the spacelike future outer trapping horizons (SFOTH) in the Robertson-Walker spacetimes via bounds on the equation of state parameter $σ$. For the Lemaitre-Tolman-Bondi (LTB) model, it is shown that a relationship between the energy density and the electric part of the Weyl curvature, $\mathcal{E}$, gives the causal classification of the MTTs. It is further shown that only spacelike MTTs are foliated by stable MTS, and that this stability guarantees no shell crossing. We also provide an explicit proof of the third law of black hole thermodynamics for the LRS II class of spacetimes, and by extension, any spacetime whose outgoing and ingoing null geodesics are normal to the MTS.

On Properties of Expansion-free Dynamical Stars

We study the geometrical and dynamical features of expansion-free dynamical stars in general relativity. Such stars can exist only if particular physical and geometric conditions are satisfied. Firstly, for trapping to exist in an expansion-free dynamical star, the star must accelerate and radiate simultaneously. If either are zero, then the shear \(Sigma\) must be zero through out the star, in which case the star is static (\(Θ=Σ=0\)). Secondly, we prove that with nonzero acceleration and radiation expansion-free dynamical stars must be conformally flat.

Conformal symmetries in generalised Vaidya spacetimes

In this paper we excavate, for the first time, the most general class of conformal Killing vectors, that lies in the two dimensional subspace described by the null and radial co-ordinates, that are admitted by the generalised Vaidya geometry. Subsequently we find the most general class of generalised Vaidya mass functions that give rise to such conformal symmetry. From our analysis it is clear that why some well known subclasses of generalised Vaidya geometry, like pure Vaidya or charged Vaidya solutions, admit only homothetic Killing vectors but no proper conformal Killing vectors with non constant conformal factors. We also study the gravitational collapse of generalised Vaidya spacetimes that posses proper conformal symmetry to show that if the central singularity is naked then in the vicinity of the central singularity the spacetime becomes almost self similar. This study definitely sheds new light on the geometrical properties of generalised Vaidya spacetimes.

Role of equation of states and thermodynamic potentials in avoidance of trapped surfaces in gravitational collapse

In this paper we consider the novel scenario where a spherically symmetric perfect fluid star is undergoing continual gravitational collapse while continuously radiating energy in an exterior radiating spacetime. There are no trapped surfaces and the collapse ends to a flat spacetime. Also the collapsing matter obeys the weak and dominant energy conditions at all epoch. Our analysis transparently brings out the role of the equation of state as well as the bounds on the thermodynamic potentials to realise such a scenario. We argue that, since the system of Einstein field equations allows for such a scenario for an open set of initial data as well as the equation of state function in their respective functional spaces, these models are generic and devoid of the problems and paradoxes related to horizons and singularities. The recent high resolution radio telescopes should in principle detect the presence of these compact objects in the sky.

Direct Detection of Universal Expansion by Holonomy in the McVittie Spacetime

In general relativity the parallel transfer of a vector around a closed curve in spacetime, or along two curves which together form a closed loop, usually results in a nonzero deficit angle between the vector's initial and final positions. We show that such holonomy in the McVittie spacetime, which represents a gravitating object imbedded in an expanding universe, can in principle be used to directly detect the expansion of the universe, for example by measuring changes in the components of a gyroscopic spin axis. Although such changes are of course small, they are large enough (\D S \sim 10^{-7}) that they could conceivably be measured if the real universe behaved like the McVittie spacetime. The real problem is that virialization will lead to domains decoupled from the global expansion on a scale much larger than that of the solar system, making such an experiment infeasible probably even in principle. Nevertheless the effect is of interest in relation to ongoing discussions, dating back at least to Einstein and Straus, which concern the relationship between the expansion of the universe and local systems.

Conformally Flat Collapsing Stars in f (R) gravity

The present work includes an analytical investigation of a collapsing spherical star in f (R) gravity. The interior of the collapsing star admits a conformal flatness. Information regarding the fate of the collapse is extracted from the matching conditions of the extrinsic curvature and the Ricci curvature scalar across the boundary hypersurface of the star. The radial distribution of the physical quantities such as density, anisotropic pressure and radial heat flux are studied. The inhomogeneity of the collapsing interior leads to a non-zero acceleration. The divergence of this acceleration and the loss of energy through a heat conduction forces the rate of the collapse to die down and the formation of a zero proper volume singularity is realized only asymptotically.

Transferring Energy in General Relativity

A problem in general relativity is, how the gravitational field can transfer energy and momentum between different distant places. The issue is that matter stress tensor is locally conserved, with no explicit interaction with the free gravitational field, which is represented by the Weyl tensor. In this paper we explicitly construct an interaction tensor for free gravity and matter, that depicts the interplay between the energy momentum tensor of free gravity, which is taken to be the symmetric two index square root of Bell-Robinson tensor, and matter. This is examined both in the case of Coulomb-like Petrov type D spacetimes and radiation like Petrov type N spacetimes, where a unique square root exists. The first case generalises the Tweedledum and Tweedledee thought experiment regarding gravitational induction in Newtonian gravity to general relativistic scenarios, and the second gives a proposal for how gravitational radiation can transfer energy and momentum between distant objects separated by a vacuum.

Conformal Symmetries of Locally Rotationally Symmetric Spacetimes

In this paper we investigate conformal symmetries in Locally Rotationally Symmetric (LRS) spacetimes using a semitetrad covariant formalism. We demonstrate that a general LRS spacetime which rotates and spatially twists simultaneously has an inherent homothetic symmetry in the plane spanned by the fluid flow lines and the preferred spatial direction. We discuss the nature and consequence of this homothetic symmetry showing that a null Killing horizon arises when the heat flux has an extremal value. We also consider the special case of a perfect fluid and the restriction on the conformal geometry.

Geometrical properties of trapped surfaces and apparent horizons

In this paper, we perform a detailed investigation on the various geometrical properties of trapped surfaces and the boundaries of trapped region in general relativity. This treatment extends earlier work on LRS II spacetimes to a general 4 dimensional spacetime manifold. Using a semi-tetrad covariant formalism, that provides a set of geometrical and matter variables, we transparently demonstrate the evolution of the trapped region and also extend Hawking's topology theorem to a wider class of spacetimes. In addition, we perform a stability analysis for the apparent horizons in this formalism, encompassing earlier works on this subject. As examples, we consider the stability of MOTS of the Schwarzschild geometry and Oppenheimer-Snyder collapse.

Rotating and spatially twisting Locally Rotationally Symmetric Spacetimes in f(R)-Gravity: a No-Go theorem

Recently, in a series of papers, we established the existence and found a general solution for the simultaneously rotating and twisting locally rotationally symmetric spacetimes in general relativity, which can model inhomogeneous and dynamic astrophysical bodies. However, these spacetimes necessarily require imperfect fluids with entropy flux. Therefore, in this paper, we investigate the existence of these spacetimes in generic f(R)-gravity models, where the entropy flux is generated purely by higher order curvature effects, while the standard matter still remains a perfect fluid. However, we transparently demonstrate here, that the symmetries of these spacetimes force the theory to be general relativity. This is a novel study that shows how the geometrical properties of a spacetime can be used to restrict the theories of gravity.

Rotating and twisting locally rotationally symmetric spacetimes: a general solution

In this paper we derive a general solution for the most general rotating and twisting locally rotationally symmetric spacetimes. This is achieved in three steps. First we decompose the manifold via 1+1+2 semi-tetrad formalism that yields a set of geometrical and thermodynamic scalars for the spacetime. We then recast the Einstein field equations in terms of evolution and propagation of these scalars. It is then shown that this class of spacetimes must possess self similarity and we use this property to solve for these scalars, thus obtaining a general solution. This solution has a number of very interesting cosmological or astrophysical consequences which we discuss in detail.
