Static trace free Einstein equations and stellar distributions

We construct models of static spherical distributions of perfect fluid in trace--free Einstein gravity theory. The equations governing the gravitational field are equivalent to the standard Einstein's equations however, their presentation is manifestly different which motivates the question whether new information would emerge due to the nonlinearity of the field equations. The incompressible fluid assumption does not lead to the well known Schwarzschild interior metric of Einstein gravity and a term denoting the presence of a cosmological constant is present on account of the integration process. The Schwarzschild interior is regained as a special case of a richer geometry. On the other hand, when the Schwarzschild geometry is prescribed, a constant density fluid emerges consistent with the standard equations. A complete model of an isothermal fluid sphere with pressure and density obeying the inverse square law is obtained. Corrections to the model previously presented in the literature by Saslaw {\it {et al}} are exhibited. The isothermal ansatz does not yield a constant gravitational potential in general but both potentials are position dependent. Conversely, it is shown that assuming a constant $g_{rr}$ gravitational potential does not yield an isothermal fluid in general as is the case in standard general relativity. The results of the standard Einstein equations are special cases of the models reported here. Noteworthy is the fact that whereas the previously reported isothermal solution was only of cosmological interest, the solution reported herein admit compact objects by virtue of the fact that a pressure-free hypersurface exists. Finally we analyze the consequences of selecting the Finch--Skea metric as the seed solution.

Echoes from the black holes: Evidence of higher order corrections to General Relativity in strong gravity regime

We show that the higher order curvature corrections to general relativity in the strong gravity regime of near horizon scales produce a rapidly oscillating and infalling Ricci scalar fireball just outside the horizon. This can generate the ringdown modes of gravitational waves having the same natural frequency as those which are generated by the black hole mergers. Our analysis provides a viable explanation to the echoes in the ringdown modes recently detected from the LIGO data, without invoking the existence of any exotic structures at the horizon.

4-dimensional spacetimes from 2-dimensional conformal null data

In this paper we investigate whether the holographic principle proposed in string theory has a classical counterpart in general relativity theory. We show that there is a partial correspondence: at least in the case of vacuum Petrov type D spacetimes that admit a non-trivial Killing tensor, which encompass all the astrophysical black hole spacetimes, there exists a one to one correspondence between gravity in bulk and a two dimensional classical conformal scalar field on a null boundary.

Scalar wave scattering from Schwarzschild black holes in modified gravity

We consider the scattering of gravitational waves off a Schwarzschild black hole in $f(R)$ gravity. We show that the reflection and transmission coefficients for tensor waves are the same as in General Relativity. While the scalar waves, which are not present in General Relativity, demonstrate interesting features. The equation that governs these scalar waves can be reduced to a Volterra integral equation. Analysis of this equation shows that a larger fraction of these waves are reflected compared to what one obtains for tensors. This may provide a novel observational signature for fourth order gravity.

New class of LRS spacetimes with simultaneous rotation and spatial twist

We establish the existence and find the necessary and sufficient conditions for a new class of solutions of Locally Rotationally Symmetric spacetimes that have non vanishing rotation and spatial twist simultaneously. We transparently show that the existence of such solutions demand non vanishing and bounded heat flux and these solutions are self similar. We provide a brief algorithm indicating how to solve the system of field equations with the given Cauchy data on an initial spacelike Cauchy surface. Finally we argue that these solutions can be used as a first approximation from spherical symmetry to study rotating, inhomogeneous, dynamic and radiating astrophysical stars.

Notes on Cosmic Censorship Conjecture revisited: Covariantly

In this paper we study the dynamics of the trapped region using a frame independent semi-tetrad covariant formalism for general Locally Rotationally Symmetric (LRS) class II spacetimes. We covariantly prove some important geometrical results for the apparent horizon, and state the necessary and sufficient conditions for a singularity to be locally naked. These conditions bring out, for the first time in a quantitative and transparent manner, the importance of the Weyl curvature in deforming and delaying the trapped region during continual gravitational collapse, making the central singularity locally visible.

Constructing black hole entropy from gravitational collapse

Based on a recent proposal for the gravitational entropy of free gravitational fields, we investigate the thermodynamic properties of black hole formation through gravitational collapse in the framework of the semitetrad 1+1+2 covariant formalism. In the simplest case of an Oppenheimer-Snyder-Datt collapse we prove that the change in gravitational entropy outside a collapsing body is related to the variation of the surface area of the body itself, even before the formation of horizons. As a result, we are able to relate the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of the black hole endstate to the variation of the vacuum gravitational entropy outside the collapsing body.

Thermodynamics of gravity favours Weak Censorship Conjecture

We use the formulation of thermodynamics of gravity as proposed by Clifton, Ellis and Tavakol on the gravitational collapse of dustlike matter, that violates the strong or weak cosmic censorship conjecture depending on the initial data. We transparently demonstrate that the gravitational entropy prefers the scenario where the stronger version is violated but the weak censorship conjecture is satisfied. This is a novel result, showing the weak cosmic censorship and hence the future asymptotically simple structure of spacetime, is being validated by the nature of gravity, without imposing any extra constraint on the form of matter.

Is cosmic censorship restored in higher dimensions?

In this paper we extend the analysis of gravitational collapse of generalised Vaidya spacetimes to higher dimensions, in the context of the Cosmic Censorship Conjecture. We present the sufficient conditions on the generalised Vaidya mass function, that will generate a locally naked singular end state. Our analysis here generalises all the earlier works on collapsing higher dimensional generalised Vaidya spacetimes. With specific examples, we show the existence of classes of mass functions that lead to a naked singularity in four dimensions, which gets covered on transition to higher dimensions. Hence for these classes of mass function Cosmic Censorship gets restored in higher dimensions and the transition to higher dimensions restricts the set of initial data that results in a naked singularity.

Buchdahl-Bondi limit in modified gravity: Packing extra effective mass in relativistic compact stars

We generalise the Buchdahl-Bondi limit for the case of static, spherically symmetric, relativistic compact stars immersed in Schwarzschild vacuum in f(R)-theory of gravity, subject to very generic regularity, thermodynamic stability and matching conditions. Similar to the case of general relativity, our result is model independent and remains true for any physically realistic equation of state of standard stellar matter. We show that an extra-massive stable star can exist in these theories, with surface redshift larger than 2, which is forbidden in general relativity. This result gives a novel and interesting observational test for validity or otherwise of general relativity and also provides a possible solution to the dark matter problem.

Global structure of Black Holes via dynamical system

We recast the system of Einstein field equations for Locally Rotationally Symmetric spacetimes into an autonomous system of covariantly defined geometrical variables. The analysis of this autonomous system gives all the important global features of the maximal extension of these spacetimes. We conclude that the dynamical system analysis can be a powerful mathematical tool for qualitative understanding of the global structure of spacetimes covariantly, without actually solving the field equations.

Gravitational collapse of generalised Vaidya spacetime

We study the gravitational collapse of a generalised Vaidya spacetime in the context of the Cosmic Censorship hypothesis. We develop a general mathematical framework to study the conditions on the mass function so that future directed non-spacelike geodesics can terminate at the singularity in the past. Thus our result generalises earlier works on gravitational collapse of the combinations of Type-I and Type-II matter fields. Our analysis shows transparently that there exist classes of generalised Vaidya mass functions for which the collapse terminates with a locally naked central singularity. We calculate the strength of the these singularities to show that they are strong curvature singularities and there can be no extension of spacetime through them.

Collapsing spherical stars in f(R) gravity

We perform a careful investigation of the problem of physically realistic gravitational collapse of massive stars in f(R)-gravity. We show that the extra matching conditions that arise in the modified gravity imposes strong constraints on the stellar structure and thermodynamic properties. In our opinion these constraints are unphysical. We prove that no homogeneous stars with non-constant Ricci scalar can be matched smoothly with a static exterior for any nonlinear function f(R). Therefore, these extra constraints make classes of physically realistic collapse scenarios in general relativity, non-admissible in these theories. We also find an exact solution for an inhomogeneous collapsing star in the Starobinski model that obeys all the energy and matching conditions. However, we argue that such solutions are fine-tuned and unstable to matter perturbations. Possible consequences on black hole physics and the cosmic censorship conjecture are also discussed.

Astrophysical Black Hole horizons in a cosmological context: Nature and possible consequences on Hawking Radiation

This paper considers the nature of apparent horizons for astrophysical black hole situated in a realistic cosmological context. Using semi-tetrad covariant methods we study the local evolutions of the boundaries of the trapped region in the spacetime. For a collapsing massive star immersed in a cosmology with Cosmic Background Radiation (CBR), we show that the initial 2 dimensional marginally trapped surface bifurcates into inner and outer horizons. The inner horizon is timelike while the continuous CBR influx into the black hole makes the outer horizon spacelike. We discuss the possible consequences of these features for Hawking radiation in realistic astrophysical contexts.

Vibrating Black Holes in f(R) gravity

We consider general perturbations of a Schwarzschild black holes in the context of f(R) gravity. A reduced set of frame independent master variables are determined, which obey two closed wave equations - one for the transverse, trace-free (tensor) perturbations and the other for the additional scalar degree of freedom which characterise fourth-order theories of gravity. We show that for the tensor modes, the underlying dynamics in f(R) gravity is governed by a modified Regge-Wheeler tensor which obeys the same Regge-Wheeler equation as in General Relativity. We find that the possible sources of scalar quasinormal modes that follow from scalar perturbations for the lower multipoles result from primordial black holes, while higher mass, stellar black holes are associated with extremely high multipoles, which can only be produced in the first stage of black hole formation. Since scalar quasi-normal modes are short ranged, this scenario makes their detection beyond the range of current experiments.

Neutron stars in Starobinsky model

We study the structure of neutron stars in $f(R)=R+αR^{2}$ theory of gravity (Starobinsky model), in an exact and non-perturbative approach. In this model, apart from the standard General Relativistic junction conditions, two extra conditions, namely the continuity of the curvature scalar and its first derivative needs to be satisfied. For an exterior Schwarzschild solution, the curvature scalar and its derivative has to be zero at the stellar surface. We show that for some equation of state (EoS) of matter, matching all conditions at the surface of the star is impossible. Hence the model brings two major fine-tuning problems: (i) only some particular classes of EoS are consistent with Schwarzschild at the surface and (ii) given that EoS, only a very particular set of boundary conditions at the centre of the star will satisfy the given boundary conditions at the surface. Hence we show that this model (and subsequently many other f(R) models where uniqueness theorem is valid) is highly unnatural, for the existence of compact astrophysical objects. This is because the EoS of a compact star should be completely determined by the physics of nuclear matter at high density and not the theory of gravity.
