Fully exact and fully dualizable module categories

We define fully exact module categories, a subclass of exact module categories over a finite braided tensor category that is stable under the relative Deligne product. In contrast, we demonstrate with examples in both zero and non-zero characteristic of the base field that the class of exact module categories is not stable under this product. We also observe in examples that fully exact module categories form a dense subset in the class of exact ones. The monoidal 2-category of fully exact module categories strictly contains those of invertible and separable module categories. In fact, we show that each internal algebra of a fully exact module category is projectively separable, a generalization of separable algebras involving projective objects. In the semisimple case, a module category is fully exact if and only if it is separable. In general, fully exact module categories are not dualizable inside their class, but if they are, they are fully dualizable objects in the monoidal 2-category of finite module categories. We call such module categories perfect. We show that perfect module categories form a rigid monoidal 2-subcategory containing all fully dualizable objects. Therefore, we propose perfect module categories as a model for finite tensor 2-categories. If the braiding is symmetric, a module category is fully exact if and only if it is perfect. As a detailed example, we classify fully exact, and hence perfect, module categories over the symmetric tensor category of modules over Sweedler's four-dimensional Hopf algebra and compute their relative Deligne products, and the categories of 1-morphisms. For a general quasi-triangular Hopf algebra, we analyze when the category of finite-dimensional vector spaces is fully exact. We show that this is not the case for both Sweedler's Hopf algebra and Lusztig's factorizable small quantum group of type $A_1$ at an odd root of unity.

Monoidal adjunctions and abelian envelopes

We show how monoidal adjunctions can be used to prove the existence of monoidal abelian envelopes of pseudo-tensor categories, in particular, those admitting a combinatorial description with certain properties. We derive concrete general criteria, which we then demonstrate by giving relatively simple combinatorial proofs of the existence of new abelian envelopes for interpolation categories of the hyperoctahedral and of the modified symmetric groups.

Temperley-Lieb categories with coloured regions and Jones-Wenzl projectors

Generalised Temperley-Lieb categories with regions labelled by elements of a commutative algebra were introduced by M. Khovanov and the second author in [Pure Appl. Math. Q. 19 (2023), no. 5]. We consider the case where the regions are labelled by colours, corresponding to a complete set of orthogonal idempotents of a semisimple commutative algebra. We determine when these generalised Temperley-Lieb categories are semisimple and find the direct sum decompositions of tensor products of simple objects. As the main tool we use two-variable versions of Chebychev polynomials and coloured Jones-Wenzl projectors. As a consequence, we prove a conjecture of M. Khovanov and the second author on Gram determinants and non-degeneracy of trace pairings for the associated Temperley-Lieb algebras with coloured regions.

Presentations for small reflection equation algebras of type A

We give presentations, in terms of the generators and relations, for the reflection equation algebras of type $GL_n$ and $SL_n$, i.e., the covariantized algebras of the dual Hopf algebras of the small quantum groups of $\mathfrak{gl}_n$ and $\mathfrak{sl}_n$. Our presentations display these algebras as quotients of the infinite-dimensional reflection equation algebras of types $GL_n$ and $SL_n$ by identifying additional relations that correspond to twisting the nilpotency and unipotency relations of the finite-dimensional quantum function algebras. The presentations are valid for appropriately defined integral forms of these algebras.

Frobenius monoidal functors induced by Frobenius extensions of Hopf algebras

We show that induction along a Frobenius extension of Hopf algebras is a Frobenius monoidal functor in great generality, in particular, for all finite-dimensional and all pointed Hopf algebras. As an application, we show that induction functors from unimodular Hopf subalgebras to small quantum groups at roots of unity are Frobenius monoidal functors and classify such unimodular Hopf subalgebras. Moreover, we present stronger conditions on Frobenius extensions under which the induction functor extends to a braided Frobenius monoidal functor on categories of Yetter--Drinfeld modules. We show that these stronger conditions hold for any extension of finite-dimensional semisimple and co-semisimple (or, more generally, unimodular and dual unimodular) Hopf algebras.

Shifted Poisson structures on higher Chevalley-Eilenberg algebras

This paper develops a graphical calculus to determine the $n$-shifted Poisson structures on finitely generated semi-free commutative differential graded algebras. When applied to the Chevalley-Eilenberg algebra of an ordinary Lie algebra, we recover Safronov's result that the $(n=1)$- and $(n=2)$-shifted Poisson structures in this case are given by quasi-Lie bialgebra structures and, respectively, invariant symmetric tensors. We generalize these results to the Chevalley-Eilenberg algebra of a Lie $2$-algebra and obtain $n\in\{1,2,3,4\}$ shifted Poisson structures in this case, which we interpret as semi-classical data of `higher quantum groups'.

Frobenius monoidal functors from ambiadjunctions and their lifts to Drinfeld centers

We identify general conditions, formulated using the projection formula morphisms, for a functor that is simultaneously left and right adjoint to a strong monoidal functor to be a Frobenius monoidal functor. Moreover, we identify stronger conditions for the adjoint functor to extend to a braided Frobenius monoidal functor on Drinfeld centers building on our previous work in [arXiv:2402.10094]. As an application, we construct concrete examples of (braided) Frobenius monoidal functors obtained from morphisms of Hopf algebras via induction.

Infinitesimal 2-braidings from 2-shifted Poisson structures

It is shown that every $2$-shifted Poisson structure on a finitely generated semi-free commutative differential graded algebra $A$ defines a very explicit infinitesimal $2$-braiding on the homotopy $2$-category of the symmetric monoidal dg-category of finitely generated semi-free $A$-dg-modules. This provides a concrete realization, to first order in the deformation parameter $\hbar$, of the abstract deformation quantization results in derived algebraic geometry due to Calaque, Pantev, To\"en, Vaqui\'e and Vezzosi. Of particular interest is the case when $A$ is the Chevalley-Eilenberg algebra of a Lie $N$-algebra, where the braided monoidal deformations developed in this paper may be interpreted as candidates for representation categories of `higher quantum groups'.

Projection formulas and induced functors on centers of monoidal categories

Given a monoidal adjunction, we show that the right adjoint induces a braided lax monoidal functor between the corresponding Drinfeld centers provided that certain natural transformations, called projection formula morphisms, are invertible. We investigate these induced functors on Drinfeld centers in more detail for the monoidal adjunction of restriction and (co-)induction along morphisms of Hopf algebras. The resulting functors are applied to examples related to affine algebraic groups, quantum groups at roots of unity, and Radford--Majid biproducts of Hopf algebras. Moreover, we use the projection formula morphisms to prove a characterization theorem for monoidal Kleisli adjunctions and a crude monoidal monadicity theorem. The functor on Drinfeld centers induced by the Eilenberg--Moore adjunction is given in terms of local modules over commutative central monoids.

The Braids on your Blanket

In this expositional essay, we introduce some elements of the study of groups by analysing the braid pattern on a knitted blanket. We determine that the blanket features pure braids with a minimal number of crossings. Moreover, we determine polynomial invariants associated to the links obtained by closing the braid patterns of the blanket.

Frobenius Monoidal Functors of Dijkgraaf-Witten Categories and Rigid Frobenius Algebras

We construct a separable Frobenius monoidal functor from $\mathcal{Z}\big(\mathsf{Vect}_H^{ω|_H}\big)$ to $\mathcal{Z}\big(\mathsf{Vect}_G^ω\big)$ for any subgroup $H$ of $G$ which preserves braiding and ribbon structure. As an application, we classify rigid Frobenius algebras in $\mathcal{Z}\big(\mathsf{Vect}_G^ω\big)$, recovering the classification of étale algebras in these categories by Davydov-Simmons [J. Algebra 471 (2017), 149-175, arXiv:1603.04650] and generalizing their classification to algebraically closed fields of arbitrary characteristic. Categories of local modules over such algebras are modular tensor categories by results of Kirillov-Ostrik [Adv. Math. 171 (2002), 183-227, arXiv:math.QA/0101219] in the semisimple case and Laugwitz-Walton [Comm. Math. Phys., to appear, arXiv:2202.08644] in the general case.

Reflective centers of module categories and quantum K-matrices

Our work is motivated by obtaining solutions to the quantum reflection equation (qRE) by categorical methods. To start, given a braided monoidal category $\mathcal{C}$ and $\mathcal{C}$-module category $\mathcal{M}$, we introduce a version of the Drinfeld center $\mathcal{Z}(\mathcal{C})$ of $\mathcal{C}$ adapted for $\mathcal{M}$; we refer to this category as the "reflective center" $\mathcal{E}_{\mathcal{C}}(\mathcal{M})$ of $\mathcal{M}$. Just like $\mathcal{Z}(\mathcal{C})$ is a canonical braided monoidal category attached to $\mathcal{C}$, we show that $\mathcal{E}_{\mathcal{C}}(\mathcal{M})$ is a canonical braided module category attached to $\mathcal{M}$; its properties are investigated in detail. Our second goal pertains to when $\mathcal{C}$ is the category of modules over a quasitriangular Hopf algebra $H$, and $\mathcal{M}$ is the category of modules over an $H$-comodule algebra $A$. We show that the reflective center $\mathcal{E}_{\mathcal{C}}(\mathcal{M})$ here is equivalent to a category of modules over an explicit algebra, denoted by $R_H(A)$, which we call the "reflective algebra" of $A$. This result is akin to $\mathcal{Z}(\mathcal{C})$ being represented by the Drinfeld double Drin($H$) of $H$. We also study the properties of reflective algebras. Our third set of results is also in the Hopf setting above. We show that reflective algebras are quasitriangular $H$-comodule algebras, and examine their corresponding quantum $K$-matrices; this yields solutions to the qRE. We also establish that the reflective algebra $R_H(\Bbbk)$ is an initial object in the category of quasitriangular $H$-comodule algebras, where $\Bbbk$ is the ground field. The case when $H$ is the Drinfeld double of a finite group is illustrated.

Finite-dimensional quantum groups of type Super A and non-semisimple modular categories

We construct a series of finite-dimensional quantum groups as braided Drinfeld doubles of Nichols algebras of type Super A, for an even root of unity, and classify ribbon structures for these quantum groups. Ribbon structures exist if and only if the rank is even and all simple roots are odd. In this case, the quantum groups have a unique ribbon structure which comes from a non-semisimple spherical structure on the negative Borel Hopf subalgebra. Hence, the categories of finite-dimensional modules over these quantum groups provide examples of non-semisimple modular categories. In the rank-two case, we explicitly describe all simple modules of these quantum groups. We finish by computing link invariants, based on generalized traces, associated to a four-dimensional simple module of the rank-two quantum group. These knot invariants distinguish certain knots indistinguishable by the Jones or HOMFLYPT polynomials and are related to a specialization of the Links-Gould invariant.

Indecomposable objects in Khovanov-Sazdanovic's generalizations of Deligne's interpolation categories

Khovanov and Sazdanovic recently introduced symmetric monoidal categories parameterized by rational functions and given by quotients of categories of two-dimensional cobordisms. These categories generalize Deligne's interpolation categories of representations of symmetric groups. In this paper, we classify indecomposable objects and identify the associated graded Grothendieck rings of Khovanov-Sazdanovic's categories through sums of representation categories over crossed products of polynomial rings over a general field. To obtain these results, we introduce associated graded categories for Krull-Schmidt categories with filtrations as a categorification of the associated graded Grothendieck ring, and study field extensions and Galois descent for Krull-Schmidt categories.

The indecomposable objects in the center of Deligne's category $Rep(S_t)$

We classify the indecomposable objects in the monoidal center of Deligne's interpolation category $Rep(S_t)$ by viewing $Rep(S_t)$ as a model-theoretic limit in rank and characteristic. We further prove that the center of $Rep(S_t)$ is semisimple if and only if $t$ is not a non-negative integer. In addition, we identify the associated graded Grothendieck ring of this monoidal center with that of the graded sum of the centers of representation categories of finite symmetric groups with an induction product. We prove analogous statements for the abelian envelope.

Differential graded cell 2-representations

This article develops a theory of cell combinatorics and cell 2-representations for differential graded 2-categories. We introduce two types of partial preorders, called the strong and weak preorder. We then analyse and compare them. The weak preorder is more easily tractable, while the strong preorder is more closely related to the combinatorics of the associated homotopy 2-representations. To each left cell, we associate a maximal ideal spectrum, and each maximal ideal gives rise to a differential graded cell 2-representation. We prove that any strong cell is contained in a weak cell and that there is a bijection between the corresponding maximal ideal spectra. Finally, we classify weak and strong cell 2-representations for dg 2-categories of projective bimodules over finite-dimensional differential graded algebras.

Pretriangulated 2-representations via dg algebra 1-morphisms

This paper develops a theory of pretriangulated 2-representations of dg 2-categories. We characterize cyclic pretriangulated 2-representations, under certain compactness assumptions, in terms of dg modules over dg algebra 1-morphisms internal to associated dg 2-categories of compact objects. Further, we investigate the Morita theory and quasi-equivalences for such dg 2-representations. We relate this theory to various classes of examples of dg categorifications from the literature.

Constructing non-semisimple modular categories with local modules

We define the class of rigid Frobenius algebras in a (non-semisimple) modular category and prove that their categories of local modules are, again, modular. This generalizes previous work of A. Kirillov, Jr. and V. Ostrik [Adv. Math. 171 (2002), no. 2] in the semisimple setup. Examples of non-semisimple modular categories via local modules, as well as connections to the authors' prior work on relative monoidal centers, are provided. In particular, we classify rigid Frobenius algebras in Drinfeld centers of module categories over group algebras, thus generalizing the classification by A. Davydov [J. Algebra 323 (2010), no. 5] to arbitrary characteristic.
