Spectral analysis beyond $\ell^2$ on Sierpinski lattices

We study the spectrum of the Laplacian on the Sierpinski lattices. First, we show that the spectrum of the Laplacian, as a subset of $\mathbb{C}$, remains the same for any $\ell^p$ spaces. Second, we characterize all the spectral points for the lattices with a boundary point.

Eigenvalues of Laplacians on Higher Dimensional Vicsek Set Graphs

We study the graphs associated with Vicsek sets in higher dimensional settings. First, we study the eigenvalues of the Laplacians on the approximating graphs of the Vicsek sets, finding a general spectral decimation function. This is an extension of earlier results on two dimensional Vicsek sets. Second, we study the Vicsek set lattices, which are natural analogues to the Sierpinski lattices. We have a criterion when two different Vicsek set lattices are isomorphic.

Existence and uniqueness of diffusions on the Julia sets of Misiurewicz-Sierpinski maps

We study the balanced resistance forms on the Julia sets of Misiurewicz-Sierpinski maps, which are self-similar resistance forms with equal weights. In particular, we use a theorem of Sabot to prove the existence and uniqueness of balanced forms on these Julia sets. We also provide an explorative study on the resistance forms on the Julia sets of rational maps with periodic critical points.

Spectral Decimation for Families of Self-Similar Symmetric Laplacians on the Sierpinski Gasket

We construct a one-parameter family of Laplacians on the Sierpinski Gasket that are symmetric and self-similar for the 9-map iterated function system obtained by iterating the standard 3-map iterated function system. Our main result is the fact that all these Laplacians satisfy a version of spectral decimation that builds a precise catalog of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions for any choice of the parameter. We give a number of applications of this spectral decimation. We also prove analogous results for fractal Laplacians on the unit Interval, and this yields an analogue of the classical Sturm-Liouville theory for the eigenfunctions of these one-dimensional Laplacians.

Laplacians on Julia sets of rational maps

The study of Julia sets gives a new and natural way to look at fractals. When mathematicians investigated the special class of Misiurewicz's rational maps, they found out that there is a Julia set which is homeomorphic to a well known fractal, the Sierpinski gasket. In this paper, we apply the method of Kigami to give rise to a new construction of Laplacians on the Sierpinski gasket like Julia sets with a dynamically invariant property.

Polynomials on the Sierpinski Gasket with Respect to Different Laplacians which are Symmetric and Self-Similar

We study the analogue of polynomials (solutions to $Δ^{n+1} u =0$ for some $n$) on the Sierpinski gasket ($SG$) with respect to a family of symmetric, self-similar Laplacians constructed by Fang, King, Lee, and Strichartz, extending the work of Needleman, Strichartz, Teplyaev, and Yung on the polynomials with respect to the standard Kigami Laplacian. We define a basis for the space of polynomials, the monomials, characterized by the property that a certain "derivative" is 1 at one of the boundary points, while all other "derivatives" vanish, and we compute the values of the monomials at the boundary points of $SG$. We then present some data which suggest surprising relationships between the values of the monomials at the boundary and certain Neumann eigenvalues of the family of symmetric self-similar Laplacians. Surprisingly, the results for the general case are quite different from the results for the Kigami Laplacian.

A Convex Surface with Fractal Curvature

We construct a surface that is obtained from the octahedron by pushing out 4 of the faces so that the curvature is supported in a copy of the Sierpinski gasket in each of them, and is essentially the self similar measure on SG. We then compute the bottom of the spectrum of the associated Laplacian using the finite element method on polyhedral approximations of our surface, and speculate on the behavior of the entire spectrum.

A Trace Theorem For Sobolev Spaces On The Sierpinski Gasket

We give a discrete characterization of the trace of a class of Sobolev spaces on the Sierpinski gasket to the bottom line. This includes the L2 domain of the Laplacian as a special case. In addition, for Sobolev spaces of low orders, including the domain of the Dirichlet form, the trace spaces are Besov spaces on the line.

The Mathieu Differential Equation and Generalizations to Infinite Fractafolds

One of the well-studied equations in the theory of ODEs is the Mathieu differential equation. A common approach for obtaining solutions is to seek solutions via Fourier series by converting the equation into an infinite system of linear equations for the Fourier coefficients. We study the asymptotic behavior of these Fourier coefficients and discuss the ways in which to numerically approximate solutions. We present both theoretical and numerical results pertaining to the stability of the Mathieu differential equation and the properties of solutions. Further, based on the idea of using Fourier series, we provide a method in which the Mathieu differential equation can be generalized to be defined on the infinite Sierpinski gasket. We discuss the stability of solutions to this fractal differential equation and describe further results concerning properties and behavior of these solutions.

Sparse Averages of Partial Sums of Fourier Series

We study convergence properties of sparse averages of partial sums of Fourier series of continuous functions. By sparse averages, we are considering an increasing sequences of integers $n_0 < n_1 < n_2 < ...$ and looking at \begin{equation*} \tildeσ_N(f)(t) = \frac{1}{N+1}\sum_{k=0}^{N}s_{n_k}(f)(t) \end{equation*} to determine the necessary conditions on the sequence $\{n_k\}$ for uniform convergence. Among our results, we find that convergence is dependent on the sequence: we give a proof of convergence for the linear case, $n_k = pk$, for $p$ a positive integer, and present strong experimental evidence for convergence of the quadratic $n_k = k^2$ and cubic $n_k = k^3$ cases, but divergence for the exponential case, $n_k = 2^k$. We also present experimental evidence that if we replace the deterministic rules above by random processes with the same asymptotic behavior then almost surely the answer is the same.

Geometry and Laplacian on Discrete Magic Carpets

We study several variants of the classical Sierpinski Carpet (SC) fractal. The main examples we call infinite magic carpets (IMC), obtained by taking an infinite blowup of a discrete graph approximation to SC and identifying edges using torus, Klein bottle or projective plane type identifications. We use both theoretical and experimental methods. We prove estimates for the size of metric balls that are close to optimal. We obtain numerical approximations to the spectrum of the graph Laplacian on IMC and to solutions of the associated differential equations: Laplace equation, heat equation and wave equation. We present evidence that the random walk on IMC is transient, and that the full spectral resolution of the Laplacian on IMC involves only continuous spectrum. This paper is a contribution to a general program of eliminating unwanted boundaries in the theory of analysis on fractals.

The Abelian Sandpile Model on Fractal Graphs

We study the Abelian sandpile model (ASM), a process where grains of sand are placed on a graph's vertices. When the number of grains on a vertex is at least its degree, one grain is distributed to each neighboring vertex. This model has been shown to form fractal patterns on the integer lattice, and using these fractal patterns as motivation, we consider the model on graph approximations of post critically finite (p.c.f) fractals. We determine asymptotic behavior of the diameter of sites toppled and characterize graphs which exhibit a periodic number of grains with respect to the initial placement.

Spectrum of the Laplacian on Regular Polyhedra

We study eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on the surfaces of four of the regular polyhedrons: tetrahedron, octahedron, icosahedron and cube. We show two types of eigenfunctions: nonsingular ones that are smooth at vertices, lift to periodic functions on the plane and are expressible in terms of trigonometric polynomials; and singular ones that have none of these properties. We give numerical evidence for conjectured asymptotic estimates of the eigenvalue counting function. We describe an enlargement phenomenon for certain eigenfunctions on the octahedron that scales down eigenvalues by a factor of $\frac{1}{3}$.

Spectral Asymptotics of the Laplacian on Surfaces of Constant Curvature

The purpose of this paper is to explore the asymptotics of the eigenvalue spectrum of the Laplacian on 2 dimensional spaces of constant curvature, giving strong experimental evidence for a conjecture of the second author \cite{strichartz2016}. We computed and analyzed the eigenvalue spectra of several different regions in Euclidean, Hyperbolic, and Spherical space under Dirichlet, Neumann, and mixed boundary conditions and in particular we found that the average of the difference between the eigenvalue counting function and a 3-term prediction has the expected nice behavior. All computational code and data is available on our companion website \cite{murray2015results}

Numerical integration for fractal measures

We find estimates for the error in replacing an integral $\int f dμ$ with respect to a fractal measure $μ$ with a discrete sum $\sum_{x \in E} w(x) f(x)$ over a given sample set $E$ with weights $w$. Our model is the classical Koksma-Hlawka theorem for integrals over rectangles, where the error is estimated by a product of a discrepancy that depends only on the geometry of the sample set and weights, and variance that depends only on the smoothness of $f$. We deal with p.c.f self-similar fractals, on which Kigami has constructed notions of energy and Laplacian. We develop generic results where we take the variance to be either the energy of $f$ or the $L^1$ norm of $Δf$, and we show how to find the corresponding discrepancies for each variance. We work out the details for a number of interesting examples of sample sets for the Sierpiński gasket, both for the standard self-similar measure and energy measures, and for other fractals.

Analysis on hybrid fractals

We introduce hybrid fractals as a class of fractals constructed by gluing several fractal pieces in a specific manner and study energy forms and Laplacians on them. We consider in particular a hybrid based on the $3$-level Sierpinski gasket, for which we construct explicitly an energy form with the property that it does not "capture" the $3$-level Sierpinski gasket structure. This characteristic type of energy forms that "miss" parts of the structure of the underlying space are investigated in the more general framework of finitely ramified cell structures. The spectrum of the associated Laplacian and its asymptotic behavior in two different hybrids is analyzed theoretically and numerically. A website with further numerical data analysis is available at http://www.math.cornell.edu/~harry970804/.

Analysis on the Projective Octagasket

The existence of a self similar Laplacian on the Projective Octagasket, a non-finitely ramified fractal is only conjectured. We present experimental results using a cell approximation technique originally given by Kusuoka and Zhou. A rigorous recursive algorithm for the discrete Laplacian is given. Further, the spectrum and eigenfunctions of the Laplacian together with its symmetries are categorized and utilized in the construction of solutions to the heat equation.
