Spectrum of the Laplacian on the Vicsek Set "with no loose ends"

We study the spectral properties of a fractal VNLE obtained from the standard Vicsek set VS by making a countable number of identifications of points so that all the line segments in VS become circles in VNLE. We show that the standard Laplacian on VNLE satisfies spectral decimation with the same cubic renormalization polynomial as for VS, and thereby give a complete description of all eigenfunctions of the Laplacian. We then study the restrictions of eigenfunctions to the large circles in VNLE and prove that these are Lipschitz functions.

Sampling Theory with Average Values on the Sierpinski Gasket

In the case of some fractals, sampling with average values on cells is more natural than sampling on points. In this paper we investigate this method of sampling on $SG$ and $SG_{3}$. In the former, we show that the cell graph approximations have the spectral decimation property and prove an analog of the Shannon sampling theorem.. We also investigate the numerical properties of these sampling functions and make conjectures which allow us to look at sampling on infinite blowups of $SG$. In the case of $SG_{3}$, we show that the cell graphs have the spectral decimation property, but show that it is not useful for proving an analogous sampling theorem.

Unexpected Spectral Asymptotics for Wave Equations on certain Compact Spacetimes

We study the spectral asymptotics of wave equations on certain compact spacetimes where some variant of the Weyl asymptotic law is valid. The simplest example is the spacetime $S^1 \times S^2$. For the Laplacian on $S^1 \times S^2$ the Weyl asymptotic law gives a growth rate $O(s^{3/2})$ for the eigenvalue counting function $N(s) = \#\{λ_j: 0 \leq λ_j \leq s\}$. For the wave operator there are two corresponding eigenvalue counting functions $N^{\pm}(s) = \#\{λ_j: 0 < \pm λ_j \leq s\}$ and they both have a growth rate of $O(s^2)$. More precisely there is a leading term $\frac{π^2}{4}s^2$ and a correction term of $as^{3/2}$ where the constant $a$ is different for $N^{\pm}$. These results are not robust, in that if we include a speed of propagation constant to the wave operator the result depends on number theoretic properties of the constant, and generalizations to $S^1 \times S^q$ are valid for $q$ even but not $q$ odd. We also examine some related examples.

Boundary Value Problems on a Half Sierpinski Gasket

We study boundary value problems for the Laplacian on a domain $Ω$ consisting of the left half of the Sierpinski Gasket ($SG$), whose boundary is essentially a countable set of points $X$. For harmonic functions we give an explicit Poisson integral formula to recover the function from its boundary values, and characterize those that correspond to functions of finite energy. We give an explicit Dirichlet to Neumann map and show that it is invertible. We give an explicit description of the Dirichlet to Neumann spectra of the Laplacian with an exact count of the dimensions of eigenspaces. We compute the exact trace spaces on $X$ of the $L^2$ and $L^\infty$ domains of the Laplacian on $SG$. In terms of the these trace spaces, we characterize the functions in the $L^2$ and $L^\infty$ domains of the Laplacian on $Ω$ that extend to the corresponding domains on $SG$, and give an explicit linear extension operator in terms of piecewise biharmonic functions.

Boundary Value Problems for a Family of Domains in the Sierpinski Gasket

For a family of domains in the Sierpinski gasket, we study harmonic functions of finite energy, characterizing them in terms of their boundary values, and study their normal derivatives on the boundary. We characterize those domains for which there is an extension operator for functions of finite energy. We give an explicit construction of the Green's function for these domains.

Energy Measures of Harmonic Functions on the Sierpiński Gasket

We study energy measures on SG based on harmonic functions. We characterize the positive energy measures through studying the bounds of Radon-Nikodym derivatives with respect to the Kusuoka measure. We prove a limited continuity of the derivative on the graph $V_*$ and express the average value of the derivative on a whole cell as a weighted average of the values on the boundary vertices. We also prove some characterizations and properties of the weights.

Extensions and their Minimizations on the Sierpinski Gasket

We study the extension problem on the Sierpinski Gasket ($SG$). In the first part we consider minimizing the functional $\mathcal{E}_λ(f) = \mathcal{E}(f,f) + λ\int f^2 d μ$ with prescribed values at a finite set of points where $\mathcal{E}$ denotes the energy (the analog of $\int |\nabla f|^2$ in Euclidean space) and $μ$ denotes the standard self-similiar measure on $SG$. We explicitly construct the minimizer $f(x) = \sum_{i} c_i G_λ(x_i, x)$ for some constants $c_i$, where $G_λ$ is the resolvent for $λ\geq 0$. We minimize the energy over sets in $SG$ by calculating the explicit quadratic form $\mathcal{E}(f)$ of the minimizer $f$. We consider properties of this quadratic form for arbitrary sets and then analyze some specific sets. One such set we consider is the bottom row of a graph approximation of $SG$. We describe both the quadratic form and a discretized form in terms of Haar functions which corresponds to the continuous result established in a previous paper. In the second part, we study a similar problem this time minimizing $\int_{SG} |Δf(x)|^2 d μ(x)$ for general measures. In both cases, by using standard methods we show the existence and uniqueness to the minimization problem. We then study properties of the unique minimizers.

"Graph Paper" Trace Characterizations of Functions of Finite Energy

We characterize functions of finite energy in the plane in terms of their traces on the lines that make up "graph paper" with squares of side length $mn$ for all $n$, and certain $\12-$order Sobolev norms on the graph paper lines. We also obtain analogous results for functions of finite energy on two classical fractals: the Sierpinski gasket and the Sierpinski carpet.

Average Error for Spectral Asymptotics on Surfaces

Let $N(t)$ denote the eigenvalue counting funtion of the Laplacian on a compact surface of constant nonnegative curvature, with or without boundary. We define a refined asymptotic formula $\tilde{N}(t)=At+Bt^{1/2}+C$, where the constants are expressed in terms of the geometry of the surface and its boundary, and consider the average error $A(t) = \frac{1}{t} \int_0^{t}D(s)ds$ for $D(t) = N(t) - \tilde{N}(t)$. We present a conjecture for the asymptotic behavior of $A(t)$, and study some examples that support the conjecture.

Pseudo-differential Operators on Fractals

We define and study pseudo-differential operators on a class of fractals that include the post-critically finite self-similar sets and Sierpinski carpets. Using the sub-Gaussian estimates of the heat operator we prove that our operators have kernels that decay and, in the constant coefficient case, are smooth off the diagonal. Our analysis can be extended to product of fractals. While our results are applicable to a larger class of metric measure spaces with Laplacian, we use them to study elliptic, hypoelliptic, and quasi-elliptic operators on p.c.f. fractals, answering a few open questions posed in a series of recent papers. We extend our class of operators to include the so called Hörmander hypoelliptic operators and we initiate the study of wavefront sets and microlocal analysis on p.c.f. fractals.

Orthogonal Polynomials on the Sierpinski Gasket

The construction of a Laplacian on a class of fractals which includes the Sierpinski gasket ({\bf $SG$}) has given rise to an intensive research on analysis on fractals. For instance, a complete theory of polynomials and power series on $SG$ has been developed by one of us and his coauthors. We build on this body of work to construct certain analogs of classical orthogonal polynomials (OP) on $SG$. In particular, we investigate key properties of these OP on $SG$, including a three-term recursion formula and the asymptotics of the coefficients appearing in this recursion. Moreover, we develop numerical tools that allow us to graph a number of these OP. Finally, we use these numerical tools to investigate the structure of the zero and the nodal sets of these polynomials.

Laplacians on Julia Sets III: Cubic Julia Sets and Formal Matings

We continue the study of constructing invariant Laplacians on Julia sets, and studying properties of their spectra. In this paper we focus on two types of examples: 1) Julia sets of cubic polynomials $z^3 + c$ with a single critical point; 2) formal matings of quadratic Julia sets. The general scheme introduced in earlier papers in this series involves realizing the Julia set as a circle with identifications, and attempting to obtain the Laplacian as a renormalized limit of graph Laplacians on graphs derived form the circle with identifications model. In the case of cubic Julia sets the details follows the pattern established for quadratic Julia sets, but for matings the details are quite challenging, and we have only been completely successful for one example. Once we have constructed the Laplacian, we are able to use numerical methods to approximate the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions. One striking observation from the data is that for the cubic Julia sets the multiplicities of all eigenspaces (except for the trivial eigenspace of constants) are even numbers. Nothing like this is valid for the quadratic julia sets studied earlier. We are able to explain this, based on the fact that three is an odd number, and more precisely because the dihedral-3 symmetry group has only two distinct one-dimensional irreducible representations.

Average Number of Lattice Points in a Disk

The difference between the number of lattice points in a disk of radius $\sqrt{t}/2π$ and the area of the disk $t/4π$ is equal to the error in the Weyl asymptotic estimate for the eigenvalue counting function of the Laplacian on the standard flat torus. We give a sharp asymptotic expression for the average value of the difference over the interval $0 \leq t \leq R$. We obtain similar results for families of ellipses. We also obtain relations to the eigenvalue counting function for the Klein bottle and projective plane.

Harmonic functions and the spectrum of the Laplacian on the Sierpinski carpet

Kusuoka and Zhou have defined the Laplacian on the Sierpinski carpet using average values of functions on small cells and the graph structure of cell adjacency. We have implemented an algorithm that uses their method to approximate solutions to boundary value problems. As a result we have a wealth of data concerning harmonic functions with prescribed boundary values, and eigenfunctions of the Laplacian with either Neumann or Dirichlet boundary conditions. We will present some of this data and discuss some ideas for defining normal derivatives on the boundary of the carpet.

Spectral Asymptotics Revisited

We introduce two new heuristic ideas concerning the spectrum of a Laplacian, and we give theorems and conjectures from the realms of manifolds, graphs and fractals that validate these heuristics. The first heuristic concerns Laplacians that do not have discrete spectra: here we introduce a notion of "spectral mass", an average of the diagonal of the kernel of the spectral projection operator, and show that this can serve as a substitute for the eigenvalue counting function. The second heuristic is an "asymptotic Schur's lemma" that describes the proportions of the spectrum that transforms according to the irreducible representations of a finite group that acts as a symmetric group of the Laplacian. For this to be valid we require the existence of a fundamental domain with relatively small boundary. We also give a version in the case that the symmetry groups is a compact Lie group. Many of our results are reformulations of known results, and some are merely conjectures, but there is something to be gained by looking at them together with a new perspective.

Exact Spectral Asymptotics on the Sierpinski Gasket

One of the ways that analysis on fractals is more complicated than analysis on manifolds is that the asymptotic behavior of the spectral counting function $N(t)$ has a power law modulated by a nonconstant multiplicatively periodic function. Nevertheless, we show that for the Sierpinski gasket it is possible to write an exact formula, with no remainder term, valid for almost every $t$. This is a stronger result than is valid on manifolds.

Outer Approximation of the Spectrum of a Fractal Laplacian

We present a new method to approximate the Neumann spectrum of a Laplacian on a fractal K in the plane as a renormalized limit of the Neumann spectra of the standard Laplacian on a sequence of domains that approximate K from the outside. The method allows a numerical approximation of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions for lower portions of the spectrum. We present experimental evidence that the method works by looking at examples where the spectrum of the fractal Laplacian is known (the unit interval and the Sierpinski Gasket (SG)). We also present a speculative description of the spectrum on the standard Sierpinski carpet (SC), where existence of a self-similar Laplacian is known, and also on nonsymmetric and random carpets and the octagasket, where existence of a self-similar Laplacian is not known. At present we have no explanation as to why the method should work. Nevertheless, we are able to prove some new results about the structure of the spectrum involving "miniaturization" of eigenfunctions that we discovered by examining the experimental results obtained using our method.
