Towards Transparent and Efficient Anomaly Detection in Industrial Processes through ExIFFI

Anomaly Detection (AD) is crucial in industrial settings to streamline operations by detecting underlying issues. Conventional methods merely label observations as normal or anomalous, lacking crucial insights. In Industry 5.0, interpretable outcomes become desirable to enable users to understand the rational under model decisions. This paper presents the first industrial application of ExIFFI, a recent approach for fast, efficient explanations for the Extended Isolation Forest (EIF) AD method. ExIFFI is tested on four industrial datasets, demonstrating superior explanation effectiveness, computational efficiency and improved raw anomaly detection performances. ExIFFI reaches over then 90\% of average precision on all the benchmarks considered in the study and overperforms state-of-the-art Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) approaches in terms of the feature selection proxy task metric which was specifically introduced to quantitatively evaluate model explanations.

Trajectory Tracking for Tilted Hexarotors with Concurrent Attitude Regulation

Tilted hexarotors embody a technology that remains partially unexploited in terms of its potential, especially concerning precise and concurrent position and attitude control. Focusing on these aerial platforms, we propose two control architectures that can tackle the trajectory tracking task, ensuring also the attitude regulation: one is designed resting on the differential flatness property of the system, which is investigated in the paper, and the other is a hierarchical nonlinear controller. We comparatively discuss the performance of the two control schemes, in terms of the accuracy of both the tracking control action and the attitude regulation, the input effort, and the robustness in the presence of disturbances. Numerical results reveal both the robustness of the hierarchical approach in the case of external disturbance and the accuracy of the differential flatness-based controller in unwindy conditions.

Tag-based Visual Odometry Estimation for Indoor UAVs Localization

The agility and versatility offered by UAV platforms still encounter obstacles for full exploitation in industrial applications due to their indoor usage limitations. A significant challenge in this sense is finding a reliable and cost-effective way to localize aerial vehicles in a GNSS-denied environment. In this paper, we focus on the visual-based positioning paradigm: high accuracy in UAVs position and orientation estimation is achieved by leveraging the potentials offered by a dense and size-heterogenous map of tags. In detail, we propose an efficient visual odometry procedure focusing on hierarchical tags selection, outliers removal, and multi-tag estimation fusion, to facilitate the visual-inertial reconciliation. Experimental results show the validity of the proposed localization architecture as compared to the state of the art.

Robust two-degrees-of-freedom control of hydraulic drive with remote wireless operation

In this paper, a controller design targeting the remotely operated hydraulic drive system is presented. A two-degrees-of-freedom PID position controller is used, which is designed so that to maximize the integral action under robust constraint. A linearized model of the system plant, affected by the parameters uncertainties such as variable communication time-delay and overall system gain, is formulated and serves for the control design and analysis. The performed control synthesis and evaluation are targeting the remote operation where the wireless communication channel cannot secure a deterministic real-time of the control loop. The provided analysis of uncertainties makes it possible to ensure system stability under proper conditions. The theoretically expected results are confirmed through laboratory experiments on the standard industrial hydraulic components.

Disturbance Observer-based Robust Control and Its Applications: 35th Anniversary Overview

Disturbance Observer has been one of the most widely used robust control tools since it was proposed in 1983. This paper introduces the origins of Disturbance Observer and presents a survey of the major results on Disturbance Observer-based robust control in the last thirty-five years. Furthermore, it explains the analysis and synthesis techniques of Disturbance Observer-based robust control for linear and nonlinear systems by using a unified framework. In the last section, this paper presents concluding remarks on Disturbance Observer-based robust control and its engineering applications.
