A local Szegö-type theorem in Toeplitz quantization

A Szegö-type theorem for Toeplitz operators was proved by Boutet de Monvel and Guillemin for general Toeplitz structures. We give a local version of this result in the setting of positive line bundles on compact symplectic manifolds.

Local trace formulae and scaling asymptotics in Toeplitz quantization

A trace formula for Toeplitz operators was proved by Boutet de Monvel and Guillemin in the setting of general Toeplitz structures. Here we give a local version of this result for a class of Toeplitz operators related to continuous groups of symmetries on quantizable compact symplectic manifolds. The local trace formula involves certain scaling asymptotics along the clean fixed locus of the Hamiltonian flow of the symbol, reminiscent of the scaling asymptotics of the equivariant components of the Szegö kernel along the diagonal.

Equivariant asymptotics for Toeplitz operators

In recent years, the Tian-Zelditch asymptotic expansion for the equivariant components of the Szegö kernel of a polarized complex projective manifold, and its subsequent generalizations in terms of scaling limits, have played an important role in algebraic, symplectic, and differential geometry. A natural question is whether there exist generalizations in which the projector onto the spaces of holomorphic sections can be replaced by the projector onto more general (non-complete) linear series. One case that lends itself to such analysis, and which is natural from the point of view of geometric quantization, is given by the linear series determined by imposing spectral bounds on an invariant self-adjoint Toeplitz operator. In this paper we focus on the asymptotics of the spectral projectors associated to slowly shrinking spectral bands.

On the Weyl law for Toeplitz operators

A Weyl law for Toeplitz operators was proved by Boutet de Monvel and Guillemin for general Toeplitz structures. In the setting of positive line bundles, we revisit this theme in light of local asymptotic techniques based on the microlocal theory of the Szego kernel. By pairing this approach with classical arguments used to estimate the spectral function of a pseudodifferential operator, we first establish a local Weyl law (that is, a pointwise estimate on the spectral function of the Toeplitz operator).

Szego kernels, Toeplitz operators, and equivariant fixed point formulae

Let $γ$ be an automorphism of a polarized complex projective manifold $(M,L)$. Then $γ$ induces an automorphism $γ_k$ of the space of global holomorphic sections of the $k$-th tensor power of $L$, for every $k=1,2,...$; for $k\gg 0$, the Lefschetz fixed point formula expresses the trace of $γ_k$ in terms of fixed point data. More generally, one may consider the composition of $γ_k$ with the Toeplitz operator associated to some smooth function on $M$. Still more generally, in the presence of the compatible action of a compact and connected Lie group preserving $(M,L,γ)$, one may consider induced linear maps on the equivariant summands associated to the irreducible representations of $G$. In this paper, under familiar assumptions in the theory of symplectic reductions, we show that the traces of these maps admit an asymptotic expansion as $k\to +\infty$, and compute its leading term.

A note on scaling asymptotics for Bohr-Sommerfeld Lagrangian submanifolds

An important problem in geometric quantization is that of quantizing certain classes of Lagrangian submanifolds, so-called Bohr-Sommerfeld Lagrangian submanifolds, equipped with a smooth half-density. A procedure for this in the complex projective setting is, roughly speaking, to apply the Szego kernel of the quantizing line bundle to a certain induced delta function supported on the submanifold. If the quantizing line bundle L is replaced by its k-th tensor power, and k tends to infinity, the resulting quantum states u_k concentrate asymptotically on the submanifold. This note deals with the scaling asymptotics of the u_k's along the submanifold; in particular, we point out a natural factorization in the corresponding asymptotic expansion, and provide some remainder estimates.

Scaling limits for equivariant Szego kernels

Suppose that the compact and connected Lie group G acts holomorphically on the irreducible complex projective manifold M, and that the action linearizes to the Hermitian ample line bundle L on M. Assume that 0 is a regular value of the associated moment map. The spaces of global holomorphic sections of powers of L may be decomposed over the finite dimensional irreducible representations of G. In this paper, we study how the holomorphic sections in each equivariant piece asymptotically concentrate along the zero locus of the moment map. In the special case where G acts freely on the zero locus of the moment map, this relates the scaling limits of the Szego kernel of the quotient to the scaling limits of the invariant part of the Szego kernel of (M,L).

Semiclassical almost isometry

Let M be a complex projective manifold, and L an Hermitian ample line bundle on it. A fundamental theorem of Gang Tian, reproved and strengthened by Zelditch, implies that the Khaeler form of L can be recovered from the asymptotics of the projective embeddings associated to large tensor powers of L. More precisely, with the natural choice of metrics the projective embeddings associated to the full linear series |kL| are asymptotically symplectic, in the appropriate rescaled sense. In this article, we ask whether and how this result extends to the semiclassical setting. Specifically, we relate the Weinstein symplectic structure on a given isodrastic leaf of half-weighted Bohr-Sommerfeld Lagrangian submanifolds of M to the asymptotics of the the pull-back of the Fubini-Study form under the semiclassical projective maps constructed by Borthwick, Paul and Uribe.

Moment maps and equivariant volumes

The study of the volume of big line bundles on a complex projective manifold M has been one of the main veins in the recent interest in the asymptotic properties of linear series. In this article, we consider an equivariant version of this problem, in the presence of a linear action of a reductive group on M. The results in this paper extend and improve those in our previous unpublished work math.AG/0412433.

Equivariant asymptotics for Bohr-Sommerfeld Lagrangian submanifolds

Suppose given a complex projective manifold $M$ with a fixed Hodge form $Ω$. The Bohr-Sommerfeld Lagrangian submanifolds of $(M,Ω)$ are the geometric counterpart to semi-classical physical states, and their geometric quantization has been extensively studied. Here we revisit this theory in the equivariant context, in the presence of a compatible (Hamiltonian) action of a connected compact Lie group.

Equivariant volumes for linearized actions

Suppose given a linearized action on a polarized complex projective manifold (M,L), and assume that the stable locus is non-empty. We study the leading asymptotics of the dimension of the equivariant summands appearing in the space of global sections of high powers of L. We use Kirwan resolutions and an elementary algebro-geometric argument to reduce the problem to the case of non-singular actions (that is, actions for which the stable and semistable loci coincide and are non-empty).

The Szego kernel of a symplectic quotient

Suppose a compact Lie group acts on a polarized complex projective manifold (M,L). Under favorable circumstances, the Hilbert-Mumford quotient for the action of the complexified group may be described as a symplectic quotient (or reduction). This paper addresses some metric questions arising from this identification, by analyzing the relationship between the Szego kernel of the pair (M,L) and that of the quotient.

Moment maps and equivariant Szego kernels

Suppose given an Hamiltonian action of a compact semisimple Lie group on a polarized complex projective manifold $(M,L)$. We study by means of microlocal techniques the local and global asymptotic behaviour of linear series on $M$ defined in terms of the action and the irreducible representations of $G$.

Szego Kernels and Finite Group Actions

In the context of almost complex quantization, a natural generalization of algebro-geometric linear series on a compact symplectic manifold has been proposed. Here we suppose given a compatible action of a finite group and consider the linear subseries associated to the irreducible representations of $G$, give conditions under which these are base-point free and study properties of the associated projective morphisms. The results obtained are new even in the complex projective case.

The asymptotic growth of equivariant sections of positive and big line bundles

If a finite group acts holomorphically on a pair (X,L), where X is a complex projective manifold and L a line bundle on it, for every k the space of holomorphic global section of the k-th power of L splits equivariantly according to the irreducible representations of G. We consider the asymptotic growth of these summands, under various positivity conditions on L. The methods apply also to the context of almost complex quantization.

Free pencils on divisors

Let X be a smooth projective variety defined over an algebraically closed field, and let Y in X be a reduced and irreducible ample divisor in X. We give a numerical sufficient condition for a base point free pencil on $Y$ to be the restriction of a base point free pencil on $X$. This result is then extended to families of pencils and to morphisms to arbitrary smooth curves. Serrano had already studied this problem in the case n=2 and 3, and Reider had then attacked it in the case $n=2$ using vector bundle methods based on Bogomolov's instability theorem on a surface (char(k)=0). The argument given here is based on Bogomolov's theorem on an n-dimensional variety, and on its recent adaptations to the setting of prime charachterstic (due to Shepherd-Barron and Moriwaki).

Seshadri constants, gonality of space curves and restriction of stable bundles

We define the Seshadri constant of a space curve and consider ways to estimate it. We then show that it governs the gonality of the curve. We use an argument based on Bogomolov's instability theorem on a threefold. The same methods are then applied to the study of the behaviour of a stable vector bundle on P^3 under restriction to curves and surfaces.

On the surjectivity of Wahl maps on a general curve

This paper explores the geometric meaning of the failure of certain kinds of Wahl maps to surject on a general curve. Sufficient conditions for surjectivity are given. An approach used by Voisin to study canonical Wahl maps is applied in this direction.
