A Self-Supervised Feature Map Augmentation (FMA) Loss and Combined Augmentations Finetuning to Efficiently Improve the Robustness of CNNs

Deep neural networks are often not robust to semantically-irrelevant changes in the input. In this work we address the issue of robustness of state-of-the-art deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) against commonly occurring distortions in the input such as photometric changes, or the addition of blur and noise. These changes in the input are often accounted for during training in the form of data augmentation. We have two major contributions: First, we propose a new regularization loss called feature-map augmentation (FMA) loss which can be used during finetuning to make a model robust to several distortions in the input. Second, we propose a new combined augmentations (CA) finetuning strategy, that results in a single model that is robust to several augmentation types at the same time in a data-efficient manner. We use the CA strategy to improve an existing state-of-the-art method called stability training (ST). Using CA, on an image classification task with distorted images, we achieve an accuracy improvement of on average 8.94% with FMA and 8.86% with ST absolute on CIFAR-10 and 8.04% with FMA and 8.27% with ST absolute on ImageNet, compared to 1.98% and 2.12%, respectively, with the well known data augmentation method, while keeping the clean baseline performance.

Coherent potential approximation for spatially correlated disorder

The coherent potential approximation (CPA) is extended to describe satisfactorily the motion of particles in a random potential which is spatially correlated and smoothly varying. In contrast to existing cluster-CPA methods, the present scheme preserves the simplicity of the conventional CPA in using a single self-energy function. Its accuracy is checked by a comparison with the exact moments of the Green's function, and with the spectral function from numerical simulations. The scheme is applied to excitonic absorption spectra in different spatial dimensions.

Analysis of the exciton-exciton interaction in semiconductor quantum wells

The exciton-exciton interaction is investigated for quasi-two-dimensional quantum structures. A bosonization scheme is applied including the full spin structure. For generating the effective interaction potentials, the Hartree-Fock and Heitler-London approaches are improved by a full two-exciton calculation which includes the van der Waals effect. With these potentials the biexciton formation in bilayer systems is investigated. For coupled quantum wells the two-body scattering matrix is calculated and employed to give a modified relation between exciton density and blue shift. Such a relation is of central importance for gauging exciton densities in experiments which pave the way toward Bose-Einstein condensation of excitons.

Non-circular semiconductor nanorings of type I and II: Emission kinetics in the exciton Aharonov-Bohm effect

Transition energies and oscillator strengths of excitons in dependence on magnetic field are investigated in type I and II semiconductor nanorings. A slight deviation from circular (concentric) shape of the type II nanoring gives a better observability of the Aharonov-Bohm oscillations since the ground state is always optically active. Kinetic equations for the exciton occupation are solved with acoustic phonon scattering as the major relaxation process, and absorption and luminescence spectra are calculated showing deviations from equilibrium. The presence of a non-radiative exciton decay leads to a quenching of the integrated photoluminescence with magnetic field.

Electron-Phonon Interaction in Embedded Semiconductor Nanostructures

The modification of acoustic phonons in semiconductor nanostructures embedded in a host crystal is investigated including corrections due to strain within continuum elasticity theory. Effective elastic constants are calculated employing {\em ab initio} density functional theory. For a spherical InAs quantum dot embedded in GaAs barrier material, the electron-phonon coupling is calculated. Its strength is shown to be suppressed compared to the assumption of bulk phonons.

Center-of-Mass Properties of the Exciton in Quantum Wells

We present high-quality numerical calculations of the exciton center-of-mass dispersion for GaAs/AlGaAs quantum wells of widths in the range 2-20 nm. The k.p-coupling of the heavy- and light-hole bands is fully taken into account. An optimized center-of-mass transformation enhances numerical convergence. We derive an easy-to-use semi-analytical expression for the exciton groundstate mass from an ansatz for the exciton wavefunction at finite momentum. It is checked against the numerical results and found to give very good results. We also show multiband calculations of the exciton groundstate dispersion using a finite-differences scheme in real space, which can be applied to rather general heterostructures.
