A categorical approach to the stable center conjecture

The stable center conjecture asserts that the space of stable distributions in the Bernstein center of a reductive p-adic is closed under convolution. It is closely related to the notion of an L-packet and endoscopy theory. We describe a categorical approach to the depth zero part of the conjecture. As an illustration of our method, we show that the Bernstein projector to the depth zero spectrum is stable.

On the depth r Bernstein projector

In this paper we prove an explicit formula for the Bernstein projector to representations of depth at most r. As a consequence, we show that the depth zero Bernstein projector is supported on topologically unipotent elements and it is equal to the restriction of the character of the Steinberg representation. As another application, we deduce that the depth r Bernstein projector is stable. Moreover, for integral depths our proof is purely local.

Character values and Hochschild homology

We present a conjecture (and a proof for G=SL(2)) generalizing a result of J. Arthur which expresses a character value of a cuspidal representation of a $p$-adic group as a weighted orbital integral of its matrix coefficient. It also generalizes a conjecture by the second author proved by Schneider-Stuhler and (independently) the first author. The latter statement expresses an elliptic character value as an orbital integral of a pseudo-matrix coefficient defined via the Chern character map taking value in zeroth Hochschild homology of the Hecke algebra. The present conjecture generalizes the construction of pseudo-matrix coefficient using compactly supported Hochschild homology, as well as a modification of the category of smooth representations, the so called compactified category of smooth $G$-modules. This newly defined "compactified pseudo-matrix coefficient" lies in a certain space on which the weighted orbital integral is a conjugation invariant linear functional, our conjecture states that evaluating a weighted orbital integral on the compactified pseudo-matrix coefficient one recovers the corresponding character value of the representation. We also discuss general properties of that space, building on works of Waldspurger and Beuzart-Plessis.

On parabolic restriction of perverse sheaves

We prove exactness of parabolic restriction and induction functors for conjugation equivariant sheaves on a reductive group generalizing a well known result of Lusztig who established this property for character sheaves. We propose a conjectural (but known for character sheaves) t-exactness property of the Harish-Chandra transform and provide an evidence for that conjecture. We also present two applications generalizing some results of Gabber and Loeser on perverse sheaves on an algebraic torus to an arbitrary reductive group.

On dimension growth of modular irreducible representations of semisimple Lie algebras

In this paper we investigate the growth with respect to $p$ of dimensions of irreducible representations of a semisimple Lie algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ over $\overline{\mathbb{F}}_p$. More precisely, it is known that for $p\gg 0$, the irreducibles with a regular rational central character $λ$ and $p$-character $χ$ are indexed by a certain canonical basis in the $K_0$ of the Springer fiber of $χ$. This basis is independent of $p$. For a basis element, the dimension of the corresponding module is a polynomial in $p$. We show that the canonical basis is compatible with the two-sided cell filtration for a parabolic subgroup in the affine Weyl group defined by $λ$. We also explain how to read the degree of the dimension polynomial from a filtration component of the basis element. We use these results to establish conjectures of the second author and Ostrik on a classification of the finite dimensional irreducible representations of W-algebras, as well as a strengthening of a result by the first author with Anno and Mirkovic on real variations of stabilities for the derived category of the Springer resolution.

Character bounds for finite groups of Lie type

We establish new bounds on character values and character ratios for finite groups $G$ of Lie type, which are considerably stronger than previously known bounds, and which are best possible in many cases. These bounds have the form $|χ(g)| \le χ(1)^{α_g}$, and give rise to a variety of applications, for example to covering numbers and mixing times of random walks on such groups. In particular we deduce that, if $G$ is a classical group in dimension $n$, then, under some conditions on $G$ and $g \in G$, the mixing time of the random walk on $G$ with the conjugacy class of $g$ as a generating set is (up to a small multiplicative constant) $n/s$, where $s$ is the support of $g$.

Geometry of second adjointness for p-adic groups

We present a geometric proof of Bernstein's second adjointness for a reductive $p$-adic group. Our approach is based on geometry of the wonderful compactification and related varieties. Considering asymptotic behavior of a function on the group in a neighborhood of a boundary stratum of the compactification, we get a "co-specialization" map between spaces of functions on various varieties with $G\times G$ action. These maps can be viewed as maps of bimodules for the Hecke algebra, and the corresponding natural transformations of functors lead to the second adjointness. We also get a formula for the "co-specialization" map expressing it as a composition of the orishperic transform and inverse intertwining operator; a parallel result for $D$-modules was obtained in arXiv:0902.1493. As a byproduct we obtain a formula for the Plancherel functional restricted to a certain commutative subalgebra in the Hecke algebra, generalizing a result by Opdam.

Microlocal sheaves and quiver varieties

We relate Nakajima Quiver Varieties (or, rather, their multiplicative version) with moduli spaces of perverse sheaves. More precisely, we consider a generalization of the concept of perverse sheaves: microlocal sheaves on a nodal curve X. They are defined as perverse sheaves on normalization of X with a Fourier transform condition near each node and form an abelian category M(X). One has a similar triangulated category DM(X) of microlocal complexes. For a compact X we show that DM(X) is Calabi-Yau of dimension 2. In the case when all components of X are rational, M(X) is equivalent to the category of representations of the multiplicative pre-projective algebra associated to the intersection graph of X. Quiver varieties in the proper sense are obtained as moduli spaces of microlocal sheaves with a framing of vanishing cycles at singular points. The case when components of X have higher genus, leads to interesting generalizations of preprojective algebras and quiver varieties. We analyze them from the point of view of pseudo-Hamiltonian reduction and group-valued moment maps.

Stability conditions for Slodowy slices and real variations of stability

We provide examples of an explicit submanifold in Bridgeland stabilities space of a local Calabi-Yau, and propose a new variant of definition of stabilities on a triangulated category, which we call a "real variation of stability conditions". We discuss its relation to Bridgeland's definition; the main theorem provides an illustration of such a relation. We also state a conjecture by the second author and Okounkov relating this structure to quantum cohomology of symplectic resolutions and establish its validity in some special cases. More precisely, let X be the standard resolution of a transversal slice to an adjoint nilpotent orbit of a simple Lie algebra over C. An action of the affine braid group on the derived category of coherent sheaves on X and a collection of t-structures on this category permuted by the action have been constructed in arXiv:1101.3702 and arXiv:1001.2562 respectively. In this note we show that the t-structures come from points in a certain connected submanifold in the space of Bridgeland stability conditions. The submanifold is a covering of a submanifold in the dual space to the Grothendieck group, and the affine braid group acts by deck transformations. In the special case when dim (X)=2 a similar (in fact, stronger) result was obtained in arXiv:math/0508257.

Wreath Macdonald polynomials and categorical McKay correspondence

Mark Haiman has reduced Macdonald positivity conjecture to a statement about geometry of the Hilbert scheme of points on the plane, and formulated a generalization of the conjectures where the symmetric group is replaced by the wreath product $S_n\ltimes (Z/r Z)^n$. He has proven the original conjecture by establishing the geometric statement about the Hilbert scheme, as a byproduct he obtained a derived equivalence between coherent sheaves on the Hilbert scheme and coherent sheaves on the orbifold quotient of ${\mathbb A}^{2n}$ by the symmetric group $S_n$. A short proof of a similar derived equivalence for any symplectic quotient singularity has been obtained by the first author and Kaledin via quantization in positive characteristic. In the present note we show the properties of the derived equivalence which imply the generalized Macdonald positivity for wreath products.

On Koszul duality for Kac-Moody groups

For any Kac-Moody group $G$ with Borel $B$, we give a monoidal equivalence between the derived category of $B$-equivariant mixed complexes on the flag variety $G/B$ and (a certain completion of) the derived category of $B^\vee$-monodromic mixed complexes on the enhanced flag variety $G^\vee/U^\vee$, here $G^\vee$ is the Langlands dual of $G$. We also prove variants of this equivalence, one of which is the equivalence between the derived category of $U$-equivariant mixed complexes on the partial flag variety $G/P$ and certain "Whittaker model" category of mixed complexes on $G^\vee/B^\vee$. In all these equivalences, intersection cohomology sheaves correspond to (free-monodromic) tilting sheaves. Our results generalize the Koszul duality patterns for reductive groups in the work of Beilinson, Ginzburg and Soergel .

Character D-modules via Drinfeld center of Harish-Chandra bimodules

The category of character D-modules is realized as Drinfeld center of the abelian monoidal category of Harish-Chandra bimodules. Tensor product of Harish-Chandra bimodules is related to convolution of D-modules via the long intertwining functor (Radon transform) by a result of Beilinson and Ginzburg. Exactness property of the long intertwining functor on a cell subquotient of the Harish-Chandra bimodules category shows that the truncated convolution category can be realized as a subquotient of the category of Harish-Chandra bimodules. Together with the description of the truncated convolution category arXiv:math/0605628v3 this allows us to derive classification of irreducible character sheaves over $\mathbb C$ obtained by Lusztig by a different method. We also give a simple description for the top cohomology of convolution of character sheaves over $\mathbb C$ in a given cell modulo smaller cells and relate the so-called Harish-Chandra functor to Verdier specialization in the De Concini-Procesi compactification.

Representations of semisimple Lie algebras in prime characteristic and noncommutative Springer resolution

We prove most of Lusztig's conjectures from the paper "Bases in equivariant K-theory II", including the existence of a canonical basis in the Grothendieck group of a Springer fiber. The conjectures also predict that this basis controls numerics of representations of the Lie algebra of a semi-simple algebraic group over an algebraically closed field of positive characteristic. We check this for almost all characteristics. To this end we construct a non-commutative resolution of the nilpotent cone which is derived equivalent to the Springer resolution. On the one hand, this noncommutative resolution is shown to be compatible with the positive characteristic version of Beilinson-Bernstein localization equivalences. On the other hand, it is compatible with the t-structure arising from the equivalence of Arkhipov-Bezrukavnikov with the derived category of perverse sheaves on the affine flag variety of the Langlands dual group, which was inspired by local geometric Langlands duality. This allows one to apply Frobenius purity theorem to deduce the desired properties of the basis. We expect the noncommutative counterpart of the Springer resolution to be of independent interest from the perspectives of algebraic geometry and geometric Langlands duality.

On tensor categories attached to cells in affine Weyl groups

We prove a conjecture by Lusztig, which describes the tensor categories of perverse sheaves on affine flag manifolds, with tensor structure provided by truncated convolution, in terms of the Langlands dual group. We also give a geometric (categorical) description of Lusztig's bijection between two-sided cells in an affine Weyl group, and unipotent conjugacy classes in the Langlands dual group. The main tool is the sheaf-theoretic construction of the center of the affine Hecke algebra due to Gaitsgory (based on ideas of Beilinson and Kottwitz), see math.AG/9912074.

Highest weight modules at the critical level and noncommutative Springer resolution

In arXiv:1001.2562 a certain non-commutative algebra $A$ was defined starting from a semi-simple algebraic group, so that the derived category of $A$-modules is equivalent to the derived category of coherent sheaves on the Springer (or Grothendieck-Springer) resolution. Let $\hat{\g}$ be the affine Lie algebra corresponding to the Langlands dual Lie algebra. Using results of Frenkel and Gaitsgory arXiv:0712.0788 we show that the category of $\hat{\g}$ modules at the critical level which are Iwahori integrable and have a fixed central character, is equivalent to the category of modules over a quotient of $A$ by a central character. This implies that numerics of Iwahori integrable modules at the critical level is governed by the canonical basis in the $K$-group of a Springer fiber, which was conjecturally described by Lusztig and constructed in arXiv:1001.2562.

Affine braid group actions on derived categories of Springer resolutions

In this paper we construct and study an action of the affine braid group associated to a semi-simple algebraic group on derived categories of coherent sheaves on various varieties related to the Springer resolution of the nilpotent cone. In particular, we describe explicitly the action of the Artin braid group. This action is a "categorical version" of Kazhdan--Lusztig--Ginzburg's construction of the affine Hecke algebra, and is used in particular by the first author and Ivan Mirkovic in the course of the proof of Lusztig's conjectures on equivariant K-theory of Springer fibers.

Perverse coherent sheaves (after Deligne)

This note is mostly an exposition of an unpublished result of Deligne, which introduces an analogue of perverse $t$-structure on the derived category of coherent sheaves on a Noetherian scheme with a dualizing complex. Construction extends to the category of coherent sheaves equivariant under an action of an algebraic group; though proof of the general statement in this case does not require new ideas, it provides examples (such as sheaves on the nilpotent cone of a semi-simple group equivariant under the adjoint action) where construction of coherent "intersection cohomology" sheaves works.

Parabolic induction and restriction functors for rational Cherednik algebras

We introduce parabolic induction and restriction functors for rational Cherednik algebras, and study their basic properties. Then we discuss applications of these functors to representation theory of rational Cherednik algebras. In particular, we prove the Gordon-Stafford theorem about Morita equivalence of the rational Cherednik algebra for type A and its spherical subalgebra, without the assumption that c is not a half-integer, which was required up to now. Also, we classify representations from category O over the rational Cherednik algebras of type A which do not contain an S_n-invariant vector, and confirm a conjecture of Okounkov and the first author on the number of such representations. In the second version we have added a result on the simplicity of the spherical Cherednik algebra of type A for -1<c<0, and a strengthened version of the main result of arXiv:math/0312474, as well as an appendix by the second author containing arXiv:0706.4308, on the reducibility of the polynomial representation of the trigonometric Cherednik algebra.
