On semi-infinite cohomology of finite dimensional graded algebras

We describe a general setting for the definition of semi-infinite cohomology of finite dimensional algebras, and provide its categorical interpretation. We apply this interpretation to compute semi-infinite cohomology of some modules over the small group at a root of unity, generalizing an earlier result of S. Arkhipov (conjectured by B. Feigin).

Perverse sheaves on affine flags and nilpotent cone of the Langlands dual group

In math.RT/0201073 we constructed an equivalence between the derived category of equivariant coherent sheaves on the cotangent bundle to the flag variety of a simple algebraic group and a (quotient of) the category of constructible sheaves on the affine flag variety of the Langlands dual group. Below we prove certain properties of this equivalence; provide a similar ``Langlands dual'' description for the category of equivariant coherent sheaves on the nilpotent cone; and deduce some conjectures by Lusztig and Ostrik.

The small quantum group and the Springer resolution

In math.RT/0304173 the derived category of the principal block in modules over the Lusztig quantum algebra at a root of unity is related to the derived category of equivariant coherent sheaves on the Springer resolution. In the present paper we deduce a similar relation between the derived category of the principal block for the {\em small (reduced) quantum algebra} and the derived category of (non-equivariant) coherent sheaves on the Springer resolution. As an application we get a geometric description of Hochschild cohomology (in particular, the center) of the regular block for the small quantum group, and use it to give an explicit description of a certain subalgebra in the center (obtained previously by another method and under more restrictive assumptions in math.QA/0107098. We also briefly explain the relation of our result to the geometric description math.RT/0407048 of the derived category of modules over the De Concini -- Kac quantum algebra.

Geometric Langlands correspondence for D-modules in prime characteristic: the GL(n) case

Let X be a smooth projective curve over an algebraically closed field k of characteristic p>0. In this paper we explore the relation between algebraic D-modules on the moduli space $Bun_n$ of vector bundles of rank n on X and coherent sheaves on the moduli space $Loc_n$ of vector bundles endowed with a connection (in the way predicted by Beilinson and Drinfeld for k of characteristic 0). The main technical tools used in the paper are the geometry of the Hitchin system and the Azumaya property of the algebra of differential operators in characteristic p.

Singular localization and intertwining functors for reductive Lie algebras in prime characteristic

In math.RT/0205144 we observed that, on the level of derived categories, representations of the Lie algebra of a semisimple algebraic group over a field of finite characteristic with a given (generalized) regular central character can be identified with coherent sheaves on the formal neighborhood of the corresponding (generalized) Springer fiber. In the present paper we treat singular central characters. The basic step is the Beilinson-Bernstein localization of modules with a fixed (generalized) central character as sheaves on the partial flag variety corresponding to the singularity of the character. These sheaves are modules over a sheaf of algebras which is a version of twisted crystalline differential operators, but is actually larger. We discuss translation functors and intertwining functors. The latter generate an action of the affine braid group on the derived category of modules with a regular (generalized) central character, which intertwines different localization functors. We also describe the standard duality on Lie algebra modules in terms of D-modules and coherent sheaves.

Localization of modules for a semisimple Lie algebra in prime characteristic

We observe that on the level of derived categories, representations of the Lie algebra of a semisimple algebraic group over a field of characteristic $p> h$ (where $h$ is the Coxeter number), with a given (generalized) central character are the same as the coherent sheaves on (generalized) Springer fibers. The first step is to observe that the derived functor of global sections provides an equivalence between the derived category of $D$-modules (with no divided powers) on the flag variety and the appropriate derived category of modules over the corresponding Lie algebra. Thus the ``derived'' version of the Beilinson-Bernstein localization Theorem holds in sufficiently large positive characteristic. Next, the algebra of (``crystalline'') differential operators is an Azumaya algebra and its splittings on Springer fibers allow us to pass from D-modules to coherent sheaves. As an application we compute the rank of the Grothendieck group of the category of modules over the Lie algebra with a fixed central character.

Noncommutative Counterparts of the Springer Resolution

Springer resolution of the set of nilpotent elements in a semisimple Lie algebra plays a central role in geometric representation theory. A new structure on this variety has arisen in several representation theoretic constructions, such as the (local) geometric Langlands duality and modular representation theory. It is also related to some algebro-geometric problems, such as the derived equivalence conjecture and description of T. Bridgeland's space of stability conditions. The structure can be described as a noncommutative counterpart of the resolution, or as a $t$-structure on the derived category of the resolution. The intriguing fact that the same $t$-structure appears in these seemingly disparate subjects has strong technical consequences for modular representation theory.

On Deformations of Associative Algebras

In a classic paper, Gerstenhaber showed that first order deformations of an associative k-algebra A are controlled by the second Hochschild cohomology group of A. More generally, any n-parameter first order deformation of A gives, due to commutativity of the cup-product on Hochschild cohomology, a morphism from the graded algebra Sym(k^n) to Ext^*(A,A), the Ext-algebra in the category of A-bimodules. We prove that any extension of the n-parameter first order deformation of A to an INFINITE ORDER formal deformation provides a canonical `lift' of the graded algebra morphism above to a dg-algebra morphism from Sym(k^n) to the dg-algebra RHom(A,A), where the Symmetric algebra Sym(k^n) is viewed as a dg-algebra (generated by the vector space $\k^n$ placed in degree 2) with zero differential.

Cohomology of tilting modules over quantum groups and $t$-structures on derived categories of coherent sheaves

The paper is concerned with cohomology of the small quantum group at a root of unity, and of its upper triangular subalgebra, with coefficients in a tilting module. We relate it to a certain t-structure on the derived category of equivariant coherent sheaves on the Springer resolution, and to equivariant coherent IC sheaves on the nil-cone. The support of these cohomology is described in terms of cells in affine Weyl groups, and the basis in the Grothendieck group they provide is related to the Kazhdan-Lusztig basis, as predicted by J. Humphreys and V. Ostrik. The proof is based on earlier results of Arkhipov, Ginzburg and the author which allow us to reduce the question to purity of IC sheaves on affine flag varieties.

Quantum Groups, the loop Grassmannian, and the Springer resolution

We establish equivalences of derived categories of the following 3 categories: (1) Principal block of representations of the quantum at a root of 1; (2) G-equivariant coherent sheaves on the Springer resolution; (3) Perverse sheaves on the loop Grassmannian for the Langlands dual group. The equivalence (1)-(2) is an `enhancement' of the known expression for quantum group cohomology in terms of nilpotent variety, due to Ginzburg-Kumar. The equivalence (2)-(3) is a step towards resolving an old mystery surrounding the existense of two completely different realizations of the affine Hecke algebra which have played a key role in the proof of the Deligne-Langlands-Lusztig conjecture. One realization is in terms of locally constant functions on the flag manifold of a p-adic reductive group, while the other is in terms of equivariant K-theory of a complex (Steinberg) variety for the dual group. Our equivalence (2)-(3) may be viewed as a `categorification' of the isomorphism between the corresponding two geometric realizations of the fundamental polynomial representation of the affine Hecke algebra. The composite of the two equivalences above yields an equivalence between abelian categories of quantum group representations and perverse sheaves. A similar equivalence at an even root of unity can be deduced, following Lusztig program, from earlier deep results of Kazhdan-Lusztig and Kashiwara-Tanisaki. Our approach is independent of these results and is totally different (it does not rely on representation theory of Kac-Moody algebras). It also gives way to proving Humphreys' conjectures on tilting U_q(g)-modules, as will be explained in a separate paper.

Gluing of perverse sheaves on the basic affine space

This paper is devoted to the study of the gluing construction for perverse sheaves on $G/U$ introduced by Kazhdan and Laumon ($G$ is a semisimple gourp, $U$ is the unipotent radical of a Borel subgroup in $G$). Kazhdan and Laumon conjectured that all Ext-groups in the glued category are finite-dimensional and that global cohomological dimension is finite. We prove the first part of this conjecture. In the appendix we show that the simple object in the glued category corresponding to the constant sheaf has infinite cohomological dimension, thus disproving the second part of the above conjecture.

Gluing of abelian categories and differential operators on the basic affine space

The notion of gluing of abelian categories was introduced by Kazhdan and Laumon in an attempt of another geometric construction of representations of finite Chevalley groups; the approach was later developed by Polishchuk and Braverman. We observe that this notion of gluing is a particular case of a general categorical construction (used also by Kontsevich and Rosenberg to define "noncommutative schemes"). We prove a conjecture of Kazhdan which says that the D-module counterpart of the Kazhdan-Laumon gluing construction produces a category equivalent to modules over the ring $\mathcal D$ of global differential operators on the basic affine space. As an application we show that $\mathcal D$ is Noetherian, and has finite injective dimension as a module over itself.

On tensor categories attached to cells in affine Weyl groups II

George Lusztig conjectured that asymptotic affine Hecke algebra of a simply connected group can be explicitly described in terms of convolution algebras. Main Theorem of this note (which is a continuation of RT/0010089) is a weak version of this Conjecture. This version is strong enough to reprove all previously known results (due to Nanhua Xi) in this direction, for example the case of type $\tilde A_n$, see QA/0010159.

Quasi-exceptional sets and equivariant coherent sheaves on the nilpotent cone

In math.AG/0005152 a certain $t$-structure on the derived category of equivariant coherent sheaves on the nil-cone of a simple complex algebraic group was introduced (the so-called perverse $t$-structure corresponding to the middle perversity). In the present note we show that the same $t$-structure can be obtained from a natural quasi-exceptional set generating this derived category. As a consequence we obtain a bijection between the sets of dominant weights and pairs consisting of a nilpotent orbit, and an irreducible representation of the centralizer of this element, conjectured by Lusztig and Vogan (and obtained by other means in math.RT/0010089).
