Homology and homotopy complexity in negative curvature

Linear upper bounds are provided for the size of the torsion homology of negatively curved manifolds of finite volume in all dimensions $d\ne 3$. This extends a classical theorem by Gromov. In dimension $3$, as opposed to the Betti numbers, the size of torsion homology is unbounded in terms of the volume. Moreover, there is a sequence of $3$-dimensional hyperbolic manifolds that converges to $\mathbb{H}^3$ in the Benjamini--Schramm topology while its normalized torsion in the first homology is dense in $[0,\infty]$. In dimension $d\geq 4$ a somewhat precise estimate is given for the number of negatively curved manifolds of finite volume, up to homotopy, and in dimension $d\ge 5$ up to homeomorphism. These results are based on an effective simplicial thick-thin decomposition which is of independent interest.

Lattice envelopes

We introduce a class of countable groups by some abstract group-theoretic conditions. It includes linear groups with finite amenable radical and finitely generated residually finite groups with some non-vanishing $\ell^2$-Betti numbers that are not virtually a product of two infinite groups. Further, it includes acylindrically hyperbolic groups. For any group $Γ$ in this class we determine the general structure of its possible lattice embeddings, i.e. of all compactly generated, locally compact groups that contain $Γ$ as a lattice. This leads to a precise description of possible non-uniform lattice embeddings of groups in this class. Further applications include the determination of possible lattice embeddings of fundamental groups of closed manifolds with pinched negative curvature.

An adelic arithmeticity theorem for lattices in products

We prove that, under mild assumptions, a lattice in a product of semi-simple Lie group and a totally disconnected locally compact group is, in a certain sense, arithmetic. We do not assume the lattice to be finitely generated or the ambient group to be compactly generated.

Cantor systems and quasi-isometry of groups

The purpose of this note is twofold. In the first part we observe that two finitely generated non-amenable groups are quasi-isometric if and only if they admit topologically orbit equivalent Cantor minimal actions. In particular, free groups if different rank admit topologically orbit equivalent Cantor minimal actions unlike in the measurable setting. In the second part we introduce the measured orbit equivalence category of a Cantor minimal system and construct (in certain cases) a representation of this category on the category of finite-dimensional vector spaces. This gives rise to novel fundamental invariants of the orbit equivalence relation together with an ergodic invariant probability measure.

l2-Betti numbers of discrete and non-discrete groups

This survey is an extended version of a talk during the Arbeitsgemeinschaft on totally disconnected locally compact groups, held in Oberwolfach in October 2014. We explain the definition of l2-Betti numbers of locally compact groups -- both discrete and non-discrete. Specific topics include proportionality principle, dimension function, Petersen's definition for locally compact groups, examples.

Topological models of finite type for tree almost automorphism groups

We show that tree almost automorphism groups, including Neretin groups, satisfy the analogue of the $F_\infty$-finiteness condition in the world of totally disconnected groups: They possess a cellular action on a contractible cellular complex such that the stabilizers are open and compact and the restriction of the action on each $n$-skeleton is cocompact.

Integral Foliated Simplicial Volume of Aspherical Manifolds

We consider the relation between simplicial volume and two of its variants: the stable integral simplicial volume and the integral foliated simplicial volume. The definition of the latter depends on a choice of a measure preserving action of the fundamental group on a probability space. We show that integral foliated simplicial volume is monotone with respect to weak containment of measure preserving actions and yields upper bounds on (integral) homology growth. Using ergodic theory we prove that simplicial volume, integral foliated simplicial volume and stable integral simplicial volume coincide for closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds and closed aspherical manifolds with amenable residually finite fundamental group (being equal to zero in the latter case). However, we show that integral foliated simplicial volume and the classical simplicial volume do not coincide for hyperbolic manifolds of dimension at least 4.

Volume and homology growth of aspherical manifolds

We provide upper bounds on the size of the homology of a closed aspherical Riemannian manifold that only depend on the systole and the volume of balls. Further, we show that linear growth of mod p Betti numbers or exponential growth of torsion homology imply that a closed aspherical manifold is "large".

On the structure and arithmeticity of lattice envelopes

We announce results about the structure and arithmeticity of all possible lattice embeddings of a class of countable groups which encompasses all linear groups with simple Zariski closure, all groups with non-vanishing first l2-Betti number, word hyperbolic groups, and, more general, convergence groups.

L2-invisibility and a class of local similarity groups

In this note we show that the members of a certain class of local similarity groups are l2-invisible, i.e. the non-reduced group homology of the regular unitary representation vanishes in all degrees. This class contains for example Thompson's group V and Nekrashevych-Röver groups. They yield counterexamples to a generalized zero-in-the-spectrum conjecture for groups that admit a classifying space with finitely many cells in each dimension.

On the growth of Betti numbers in $p$-adic analytic towers

We study the asymptotic growth of Betti numbers in tower of finite covers and provide simple proofs of approximation results, which were previously obtained by Calegari-Emerton, in the generality of arbitrary p-adic analytic towers of covers. Further, we also obtain partial results about arbitrary pro-$p$ towers.

On the cohomology of weakly almost periodic group representations

We initiate a study of cohomological aspects of weakly almost periodic group representations on Banach spaces, in particular, isometric representations on reflexive Banach spaces. Using the Ryll-Nardzewski fixed point Theorem, we prove a vanishing result for the restriction map (with respect to a subgroup) in the reduced cohomology of weakly periodic representations. Combined with the Alaoglu-Birkhoff decomposition theorem, this generalizes and complements theorems on continuous group cohomology by several authors.

Weak notions of normality and vanishing up to rank in L2-cohomology

We study vanishing results for L2-cohomology of countable groups under the presence of subgroups that satisfy some weak normality condition. As a consequence we show that the L2-Betti numbers of SL(n,R) for any infinite integral domain R vanish below degree n-1. We also give a uniform proof for the vanishing of L2-Betti numbers of Thompson's groups F and T.

Integrable measure equivalence and rigidity of hyperbolic lattices

We study rigidity properties of lattices in hyperbolic n-space with n>2 and of surface groups in the context of (integrable) measure equivalence. The results for lattices in hyperbolic n-space with n>2 are generalizations of Mostow rigidity; they include a cocycle version of strong rigidity and an integrable measure equivalence classification. Despite the lack of Mostow rigidity for n=2 we show that cocompact lattices in SL(2,R) allow a similar integrable measure equivalence classification.

Euler Characteristics of Categories and Homotopy Colimits

In a previous article, we introduced notions of finiteness obstruction, Euler characteristic, and L^2-Euler characteristic for wide classes of categories. In this sequel, we prove the compatibility of those notions with homotopy colimits of I-indexed categories where I is any small category admitting a finite I-CW-model for its I-classifying space. Special cases of our Homotopy Colimit Formula include formulas for products, homotopy pushouts, homotopy orbits, and transport groupoids. We also apply our formulas to Haefliger complexes of groups, which extend Bass--Serre graphs of groups to higher dimensions. In particular, we obtain necessary conditions for developability of a finite complex of groups from an action of a finite group on a finite category without loops.
