Finiteness obstructions and Euler characteristics of categories

We introduce notions of finiteness obstruction, Euler characteristic, L^2-Euler characteristic, and Möbius inversion for wide classes of categories. The finiteness obstruction of a category Gamma of type (FP) is a class in the projective class group K_0(RGamma); the functorial Euler characteristic and functorial L^2-Euler characteristic are respectively its RGamma-rank and L^2-rank. We also extend the second author's K-theoretic Möbius inversion from finite categories to quasi-finite categories. Our main example is the proper orbit category, for which these invariants are established notions in the geometry and topology of classifying spaces for proper group actions. Baez-Dolan's groupoid cardinality and Leinster's Euler characteristic are special cases of the L^2-Euler characteristic. Some of Leinster's results on Möbius-Rota inversion are special cases of the K-theoretic Möbius inversion.

Efficient subdivision in hyperbolic groups and applications

We identify the images of the comparision maps from ordinary homology and Sobolev homology, respectively, to the $l^1$-homology of a word-hyperbolic group with coefficients in complete normed modules. The underlying idea is that there is a subdivision procedure for singular chains in negatively curved spaces that is much more efficient (in terms of the $l^1$-norm) than barycentric subdivision. The results of this paper are an important ingredient in a forthcoming proof of the authors that hyperbolic lattices in dimension at least 3 are rigid with respect to integrable measure equivalence. Moreover, we prove a proportionality principle for the simplicial volume of negatively curved manifolds with regard to integrable measure equivalence.

Spectral distribution and $L^2$-isoperimetric profile of Laplace operators on groups

We give a formula relating the $L^2$-isoperimetric profile to the spectral distribution of the Laplace operator associated to a finitely generated group $Γ$ or a Riemannian manifold with a cocompact, isometric $Γ$-action. As a consequence, we can apply techniques from geometric group theory to estimate the spectral distribution of the Laplace operator in terms of the growth and the Følner's function of the group, generalizing previous estimates by Gromov and Shubin. This leads, in particular, to sharp estimates of the spectral distributions for several classes of solvable groups. Furthermore, we prove the asymptotic invariance of the spectral distribution under changes of measures with finite second moment.

A spectral sequence to compute L2-Betti numbers of groups and groupoids

We construct a spectral sequence for L2-type cohomology groups of discrete measured groupoids. Based on the spectral sequence, we prove the Hopf-Singer conjecture for aspherical manifolds with poly-surface fundamental groups. More generally, we obtain a permanence result for the Hopf-Singer conjecture under taking fiber bundles whose base space is an aspherical manifold with poly-surface fundamental group. As further sample applications of the spectral sequence, we obtain new vanishing theorems and explicit computations of L2-Betti numbers of groups and manifolds and obstructions to the existence of normal subrelations in measured equivalence relations.

Degree theorems and Lipschitz simplicial volume for non-positively curved manifolds of finite volume

We study a metric version of the simplicial volume on Riemannian manifolds, the Lipschitz simplicial volume, with applications to degree theorems in mind. We establish a proportionality principle and a product inequality from which we derive an extension of Gromov's volume comparison theorem to products of negatively curved manifolds or locally symmetric spaces of non-compact type. In contrast, we provide vanishing results for the ordinary simplicial volume; for instance, we show that the ordinary simplicial volume of non-compact locally symmetric spaces with finite volume of Q-rank at least 3 is zero.

Amenable covers, volume and L2-Betti numbers of aspherical manifolds

We provide a proof for an inequality between volume and L2-Betti numbers of aspherical manifolds for which Gromov outlined a strategy based on general ideas of Connes. The implementation of that strategy involves measured equivalence relations, Gaboriau's theory of L2-Betti numbers of R-simplicial complexes, and other themes of measurable group theory. Further, we prove new vanishing theorems for L2-Betti numbers that generalize a classical result of Cheeger and Gromov. As one of the corollaries, we obtain a gap theorem which implies vanishing of L2-Betti numbers of an aspherical manifold when its minimal volume is sufficiently small.

Simplicial volume of Hilbert modular varieties

The simplicial volume introduced by Gromov provides a topologically accessible lower bound for the minimal volume. Lafont and Schmidt proved that the simplicial volume of closed, locally symmetric spaces of non-compact type is positive. In this paper, we present a generalization of this result to certain non-compact locally symmetric spaces of finite volume, to so-called Hilbert modular varieties. The key idea is to reduce the problem to the compact case by first relating the simplicial volume of these manifolds to the Lipschitz simplicial volume and then taking advantage of a proportionality principle for the Lipschitz simplicial volume. Moreover, using computations of Bucher-Karlsson for the simplicial volume of products of closed surfaces, we obtain the exact value of the simplicial volume of Hilbert modular surfaces.

Homological Invariants and Quasi-Isometry

Building upon work of Y. Shalom we give a homological-algebra flavored definition of an induction map in group homology associated to a topological coupling. As an application we obtain estimates of the (co)homological dimension of groups G and H, where G embeds uniformly into H and the (co)homological dimension of G is finite. Another consequence of our results is that the Hirsch ranks of quasi-isometric solvable groups coincide. Further, it is shown that the real cohomology rings of quasi-isometric nilpotent groups are isomorphic as graded rings. On the analytic side, we apply the induction technique to Novikov-Shubin invariants of amenable groups, which can be seen as homological invariants, and show their invariance under quasi-isometry.

L^2-Betti Numbers of Discrete Measured Groupoids

There are notions of L^2-Betti numbers for discrete groups (Cheeger-Gromov, Lueck), for type II_1-factors (recent work of Connes-Shlyakhtenko) and for countable standard equivalence relations (Gaboriau). Whereas the first two are algebraically defined using Lueck's dimension theory,Gaboriau's definition of the latter is inspired by the work of Cheeger and Gromov. In this article we give a definition of L^2-Betti numbers of discrete measured groupoids that is based on Lueck's dimension theory, thereby encompassing the cases of groups, equivalence relations and holonomy groupoids with an invariant measure for a complete transversal. We show that with our definition, like with Gaboriau's,the L^2-Betti numbers of a countable group G coincide with the L^2-Betti numbers of the orbit equivalence relation of a free action of G on a probability space. This yields a new proof of the fact the L^2-Betti numbers of groups with orbit equivalent actions coincide.
