Observation of giant nonreciprocal charge transport from quantum Hall states in a topological insulator

Symmetry breaking in quantum materials is of great importance and can lead to nonreciprocal charge transport. Topological insulators provide a unique platform to study nonreciprocal charge transport due to their surface states, especially quantum Hall states under external magnetic field. Here, we report the observation of nonreciprocal charge transport mediated by quantum Hall states in devices composed of the intrinsic topological insulator Sn-Bi1.1Sb0.9Te2S, which is attributed to asymmetric scattering between quantum Hall states and Dirac surface states. A giant nonreciprocal coefficient of up to 2.26*10^5 A^-1 is found. Our work not only reveals the properties of nonreciprocal charge transport of quantum Hall states in topological insulators, but also paves the way for future electronic devices.

Light-induced giant enhancement of nonreciprocal transport at KTaO3-based interfaces

Nonlinear transport is a unique functionality of noncentrosymmetric systems, which reflects profound physics, such as spin-orbit interaction, superconductivity and band geometry. However, it remains highly challenging to enhance the nonreciprocal transport for promising rectification devices. Here, we observe a light-induced giant enhancement of nonreciprocal transport at the superconducting and epitaxial CaZrO3/KTaO3 (111) interfaces. The nonreciprocal transport coefficient undergoes a giant increase with three orders of magnitude up to 105 A-1T-1. Furthermore, a strong Rashba spin-orbit coupling effective field of 14.7 T is achieved with abundant high-mobility photocarriers under ultraviolet illumination, which accounts for the giant enhancement of nonreciprocal transport coefficient. Our first-principles calculations further disclose the stronger Rashba spin-orbit coupling strength and the longer relaxation time in the photocarrier excitation process, bridging the light-property quantitative relationship. Our work provides an alternative pathway to boost nonreciprocal transport in noncentrosymmetric systems and facilitates the promising applications in opto-rectification devices and spin-orbitronic devices.

Defect-induced helicity-dependent terahertz emission in Dirac semimetal PtTe2 thin films

Nonlinear transport enabled by symmetry breaking in quantum materials has aroused considerable interest in condensed matter physics and interdisciplinary electronics. However, the nonlinear optical response in centrosymmetric Dirac semimetals via the defect engineering has remained highly challenging. Here, we observe the helicity-dependent terahertz (THz) emission in Dirac semimetal PtTe2 thin films via circular photogalvanic effect (CPGE) under normal incidence. This is activated by artificially controllable out-of-plane Te-vacancy defect gradient, which is unambiguously evidenced by the electron ptychography. The defect gradient lowers the symmetry, which not only induces the band spin splitting, but also generates the giant Berry curvature dipole (BCD) responsible for the CPGE. Such BCD-induced helicity-dependent THz emission can be manipulated by the Te-vacancy defect concentration. Furthermore, temperature evolution of the THz emission features the minimum of the THz amplitude due to the carrier compensation. Our work provides a universal strategy for symmetry breaking in centrosymmetric Dirac materials for efficient nonlinear transport and facilitates the promising device applications in integrated optoelectronics and spintronics.

Classification of solutions to $3$-D and $4$-D mixed order conformally invariant systems with critical and exponential growth

In this paper, without any assumption on $v$ and under the extremely mild assumption $u(x)= O(|x|^{K})$ as $|x|\rightarrow+\infty$ for some $K\gg1$ arbitrarily large, we classify solutions of the following conformally invariant system with mixed order and exponentially increasing nonlinearity in $\mathbb{R}^{3}$: $$ \begin{cases} \ (-Δ)^{\frac{1}{2}} u=v^{4} ,&x\in \mathbb{R}^{3},\\ \ -Δv=e^{pw} ,&x\in \mathbb{R}^{3},\\ \ (-Δ)^{\frac{3}{2}} w=u^{3} ,&x\in \mathbb{R}^{3}, \end{cases} $$ where $p>0$, $w(x)=o(|x|^{2})$ at $\infty$ and $u,v\geq0$ satisfies the finite total curvature condition $\int_{\mathbb{R}^{3}}u^{3}(x)\mathrm{d}x<+\infty$. Moreover, under the extremely mild assumption that \emph{either} $u(x)$ or $v(x)=O(|x|^{K})$ as $|x|\rightarrow+\infty$ for some $K\gg1$ arbitrarily large \emph{or} $\int_{\mathbb{R}^{4}}e^{Λpw(y)}\mathrm{d}y<+\infty$ for some $Λ\geq1$, we also prove classification of solutions to the conformally invariant system with mixed order and exponentially increasing nonlinearity in $\mathbb{R}^{4}$: \begin{align*} \begin{cases} \ (-Δ)^{\frac{1}{2}} u=e^{pw} ,&x\in \mathbb{R}^{4},\\ \ -Δv=u^2 ,&x\in \mathbb{R}^{4},\\ \ (-Δ)^{2} w=v^{4} ,&x\in \mathbb{R}^{4}, \end{cases} \end{align*} where $p>0$, and $w(x)=o(|x|^{2})$ at $\infty$ and $u,v\geq0$ satisfies the finite total curvature condition $\int_{\mathbb{R}^{4}}v^{4}(x)\mathrm{d}x<+\infty$. The key ingredients are deriving the integral representation formulae and crucial asymptotic behaviors of solutions $(u,v,w)$ and calculating the explicit value of the total curvature.

Capacity Enhancement of n-GHZ State Super-dense Coding Channels by Purification and Quantum Neural Network

A super-dense coding protocol based on the n-GHZ state is proposed to enable the two communicating parties to choose the number of transmitted code words according to their demand and to adapt the quantum super-dense coding protocol to multiple transmitted code word scenarios. A method is proposed that combines entanglement purification and Quantum Neural Network (QNN) to improve the channel capacity of super-dense coding. By simulating a realistic quantum communication noise environment in the Cirq platform, the effect of purification and QNN on the enhancement of fidelity and channel capacity in super-dense coding communication scenarios with different dimensions under unitary and non-unitary noise conditions is analyzed. The experimental results show that the channel capacity of super-dense coding is improved in different degrees when purification and QNN are applied separately, and the combination of purification and QNN has a superimposed effect on the channel capacity enhancement of super-dense coding, and the enhancement effect is more significant in different dimensions.

Rotating multistate Proca stars

In this paper, we construct the rotating multistate Proca stars (RMPSs) composed of two coexisting Proca fields including the ground state and first excited state. We consider the solution families of RMPSs in synchronized frequency and non-synchronized frequency scenarios, respectively. We discuss the characteristics of the matter fields changing with the synchronized frequency or non-synchronized frequency, and then we explore the relationship between the ADM mass $M$ and the frequency. We also analyze the characteristics of ADM mass $M$ as a function of the angular momentum $J$ simultaneously. Furthermore, we calculate the binding energy of RMPSs and analyze the stability of the solutions. Finally, we discuss the ergosphere of RMPSs.

Muted: Multilingual Targeted Offensive Speech Identification and Visualization

Offensive language such as hate, abuse, and profanity (HAP) occurs in various content on the web. While previous work has mostly dealt with sentence level annotations, there have been a few recent attempts to identify offensive spans as well. We build upon this work and introduce Muted, a system to identify multilingual HAP content by displaying offensive arguments and their targets using heat maps to indicate their intensity. Muted can leverage any transformer-based HAP-classification model and its attention mechanism out-of-the-box to identify toxic spans, without further fine-tuning. In addition, we use the spaCy library to identify the specific targets and arguments for the words predicted by the attention heatmaps. We present the model's performance on identifying offensive spans and their targets in existing datasets and present new annotations on German text. Finally, we demonstrate our proposed visualization tool on multilingual inputs.

Global Strong Solutions to the incompressible Magnetohydrodynamic Equations with Density-Dependent Viscosity and Vacuum in 3D Exterior Domains

The nonhomogeneous incompressible Magnetohydrodynamic Equations with density-dependent viscosity is studied in three-dimensional (3D) exterior domains with slip boundary conditions. The key is the constraint of an additional initial value condition $B_0\in L^p (1\leqslant p<12/7)$, which increase decay-in-time rates of the solutions, thus we obtain the global existence of strong solutions provided the gradient of the initial velocity and initial magnetic field is suitably small. In particular, the initial density is allowed to contain vacuum states and large oscillations. Moreover, the large-time behavior of the solution is also shown.

PointGAT: A quantum chemical property prediction model integrating graph attention and 3D geometry

Predicting quantum chemical properties is a fundamental challenge for computational chemistry. While the development of graph neural networks has advanced molecular representation learning and property prediction, their performance could be further enhanced by incorporating 3D structural geometry into 2D molecular graph representation. In this study, we introduce the PointGAT model for quantum molecular property prediction, which integrates 3D molecular coordinates with graph-attention modeling. Comparison with other current models in molecular prediction tasks showed that PointGAT could provide higher predictive accuracy in various benchmark datasets from MoleculeNet, including ESOL, FreeSolv, Lipop, HIV, and 10 out of 12 tasks of the QM9 dataset. To further examine PointGAT prediction of quantum mechanical (QM) energies, we constructed a C10 dataset comprising 11,841 charged and chiral carbocation intermediates with QM energies calculated at the DM21/6-31G*//B3LYP/6-31G* levels. Notably, PointGAT achieved an R2 value of 0.950 and an MAE of 1.616 kcal/mol, outperforming other models. Additional ablation studies indicated that incorporating molecular geometry into the model resulted in markedly higher predictive accuracy, reducing the MAE value from 1.802 kcal/mol to 1.616 kcal/mol. Moreover, visualization of PointGAT atomic attention weights suggested its predictions were interpretable. Findings in this study support the application of PointGAT as a powerful and versatile tool for quantum chemical property prediction that can facilitate high-accuracy modeling for fundamental exploration of chemical space as well as drug design and molecular engineering.

Emergency of black holes from wormholes

In this paper, we study the spherically symmetric Dirac star model in the presence of a phantom field, obtaining a traversable wormhole solution in non-trivial topological spacetime. This solution exhibits asymmetry in both the field configuration and the metric and possesses a finite ADM mass $M$ and Noether charge $Q$. Furthermore, we find that due to the presence of a wormhole at the center, this solution exhibits many differences from the Dirac star under trivial spacetime. Notably, when the wormhole throat size is small, our numerical calculations indicate the emergence of an extremely approximate black hole solution on one side of the wormhole spacetime, a phenomenon unexplored. At this time, the Kretschmann scalar near the throat tends to infinity, indicating the wormhole becomes untraversable.

Excited Dirac stars with higher azimuthal harmonic index

In this paper, we investigate the properties of the first excited state Dirac stars (DSs) with higher azimuthal harmonic index (specifically, the azimuthal harmonic indexes $m_D$ = $3/2$, $5/2$, $7/2$), as well as the relationship between the ADM mass and angular momentum of Dirac stars with respect to frequency. Moreover, We find that the ergospheres of DSs appear at lower spinor field frequencies, and both the ergospheres and the distribution of the spinor field functions are asymmetric about the equatorial plane. Furthermore, we introduce the ground state scalar field and examine its impact on this system, which is known as the multi-state Dirac-boson stars (DBSs) model. We show various types of solution families for DBSs under both synchronized frequency $ω$ and nonsynchronized frequencies and find that similar to DSs, the spinor field and the ergospheres of DBSs are also asymmetric about the equatorial plane, but the ergospheres appear at higher spinor field frequencies.

Model Inversion Attack via Dynamic Memory Learning

Model Inversion (MI) attacks aim to recover the private training data from the target model, which has raised security concerns about the deployment of DNNs in practice. Recent advances in generative adversarial models have rendered them particularly effective in MI attacks, primarily due to their ability to generate high-fidelity and perceptually realistic images that closely resemble the target data. In this work, we propose a novel Dynamic Memory Model Inversion Attack (DMMIA) to leverage historically learned knowledge, which interacts with samples (during the training) to induce diverse generations. DMMIA constructs two types of prototypes to inject the information about historically learned knowledge: Intra-class Multicentric Representation (IMR) representing target-related concepts by multiple learnable prototypes, and Inter-class Discriminative Representation (IDR) characterizing the memorized samples as learned prototypes to capture more privacy-related information. As a result, our DMMIA has a more informative representation, which brings more diverse and discriminative generated results. Experiments on multiple benchmarks show that DMMIA performs better than state-of-the-art MI attack methods.

Revisiting and Exploring Efficient Fast Adversarial Training via LAW: Lipschitz Regularization and Auto Weight Averaging

Fast Adversarial Training (FAT) not only improves the model robustness but also reduces the training cost of standard adversarial training. However, fast adversarial training often suffers from Catastrophic Overfitting (CO), which results in poor robustness performance. Catastrophic Overfitting describes the phenomenon of a sudden and significant decrease in robust accuracy during the training of fast adversarial training. Many effective techniques have been developed to prevent Catastrophic Overfitting and improve the model robustness from different perspectives. However, these techniques adopt inconsistent training settings and require different training costs, i.e, training time and memory costs, leading to unfair comparisons. In this paper, we conduct a comprehensive study of over 10 fast adversarial training methods in terms of adversarial robustness and training costs. We revisit the effectiveness and efficiency of fast adversarial training techniques in preventing Catastrophic Overfitting from the perspective of model local nonlinearity and propose an effective Lipschitz regularization method for fast adversarial training. Furthermore, we explore the effect of data augmentation and weight averaging in fast adversarial training and propose a simple yet effective auto weight averaging method to improve robustness further. By assembling these techniques, we propose a FGSM-based fast adversarial training method equipped with Lipschitz regularization and Auto Weight averaging, abbreviated as FGSM-LAW. Experimental evaluations on four benchmark databases demonstrate the superiority of the proposed method over state-of-the-art fast adversarial training methods and the advanced standard adversarial training methods.

COCO-O: A Benchmark for Object Detectors under Natural Distribution Shifts

Practical object detection application can lose its effectiveness on image inputs with natural distribution shifts. This problem leads the research community to pay more attention on the robustness of detectors under Out-Of-Distribution (OOD) inputs. Existing works construct datasets to benchmark the detector's OOD robustness for a specific application scenario, e.g., Autonomous Driving. However, these datasets lack universality and are hard to benchmark general detectors built on common tasks such as COCO. To give a more comprehensive robustness assessment, we introduce COCO-O(ut-of-distribution), a test dataset based on COCO with 6 types of natural distribution shifts. COCO-O has a large distribution gap with training data and results in a significant 55.7% relative performance drop on a Faster R-CNN detector. We leverage COCO-O to conduct experiments on more than 100 modern object detectors to investigate if their improvements are credible or just over-fitting to the COCO test set. Unfortunately, most classic detectors in early years do not exhibit strong OOD generalization. We further study the robustness effect on recent breakthroughs of detector's architecture design, augmentation and pre-training techniques. Some empirical findings are revealed: 1) Compared with detection head or neck, backbone is the most important part for robustness; 2) An end-to-end detection transformer design brings no enhancement, and may even reduce robustness; 3) Large-scale foundation models have made a great leap on robust object detection. We hope our COCO-O could provide a rich testbed for robustness study of object detection. The dataset will be available at https://github.com/alibaba/easyrobust/tree/main/benchmarks/coco_o.

Robust Automatic Speech Recognition via WavAugment Guided Phoneme Adversarial Training

Developing a practically-robust automatic speech recognition (ASR) is challenging since the model should not only maintain the original performance on clean samples, but also achieve consistent efficacy under small volume perturbations and large domain shifts. To address this problem, we propose a novel WavAugment Guided Phoneme Adversarial Training (wapat). wapat use adversarial examples in phoneme space as augmentation to make the model invariant to minor fluctuations in phoneme representation and preserve the performance on clean samples. In addition, wapat utilizes the phoneme representation of augmented samples to guide the generation of adversaries, which helps to find more stable and diverse gradient-directions, resulting in improved generalization. Extensive experiments demonstrate the effectiveness of wapat on End-to-end Speech Challenge Benchmark (ESB). Notably, SpeechLM-wapat outperforms the original model by 6.28% WER reduction on ESB, achieving the new state-of-the-art.

CValues: Measuring the Values of Chinese Large Language Models from Safety to Responsibility

With the rapid evolution of large language models (LLMs), there is a growing concern that they may pose risks or have negative social impacts. Therefore, evaluation of human values alignment is becoming increasingly important. Previous work mainly focuses on assessing the performance of LLMs on certain knowledge and reasoning abilities, while neglecting the alignment to human values, especially in a Chinese context. In this paper, we present CValues, the first Chinese human values evaluation benchmark to measure the alignment ability of LLMs in terms of both safety and responsibility criteria. As a result, we have manually collected adversarial safety prompts across 10 scenarios and induced responsibility prompts from 8 domains by professional experts. To provide a comprehensive values evaluation of Chinese LLMs, we not only conduct human evaluation for reliable comparison, but also construct multi-choice prompts for automatic evaluation. Our findings suggest that while most Chinese LLMs perform well in terms of safety, there is considerable room for improvement in terms of responsibility. Moreover, both the automatic and human evaluation are important for assessing the human values alignment in different aspects. The benchmark and code is available on ModelScope and Github.

Ultraviolet photon-counting single-pixel imaging

We demonstrate photon-counting single-pixel imaging in the ultraviolet region. Toward this target, we develop a high-performance compact single-photon detector based on a 4H-SiC single-photon avalanche diode (SPAD), where a tailored readout circuit with active hold-off time is designed to restrain detector noise and operate the SPAD in free-running mode. We use structured illumination to reconstruct 192$\times$192 compressed images at a 4 fps frame rate. To show the superior capability of ultraviolet characteristics, we use our single-pixel imaging system to identify and distinguish different transparent objects under low-intensity irradiation, and image ultraviolet light sources. The results provide a practical solution for general ultraviolet imaging applications.

Observation of colossal topological Hall effect in noncoplanar ferromagnet Cr5Te6 thin films

The topological Hall effect (THE) is critical to the exploration of the spin chirality generated by the real-space Berry curvature, which has attracted worldwide attention for its prospective applications in spintronic devices. However, the prominent THE remains elusive at room temperature, which severely restricts the practical integration of chiral spin textures. Here, we show a colossal intrinsic THE in large-area ferromagnet Cr5Te6 thin films epitaxially grown by pulsed laser deposition. Such a THE can be maintained until 270 K, which is attributed to the field-stimulated noncoplanar spin textures induced by the interaction of the in-plane ferromagnet and antiferromagnet infrastructures. Our first-principles calculations further verify the considerable Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in Cr5Te6. This work not only paves the way for robust chiral spin textures near room temperature in large-area low-dimensional ferromagnetic films for practical applications, but also facilitates the development of high-density and dissipationless spintronic devices.
