Cavity Plasmon: Enhanced Luminescence Effect on InGaN Light Emitting Diodes

We fabricated polygonal nanoholes in the top p-GaN layer of the InGaN/GaN light-emitting diode, followed by the deposition of Au/Al metal thin film within the nanoholes to create metal microcavities, thereby constructing the surface plasmon structure. The findings indicate that with increased current injection, the light output of the LEDs rose by 46%, accompanied by a shift of the gain peak position towards the plasmon resonance energy. The maximum enhancement factor increases to 2.38 as the coupling distance decreases from 60 nm to 30 nm. Interestingly, time-resolved photoluminescence data showed that the spontaneous emission decay time lengthened due to the plasmon coupling, suggesting the presence of a new plasmon coupling mechanism. Finite-Difference Time-Domain simulation results show that the electric field is localized at certain locations around the metal microcavity, generating a new type of shape-sensitive plasmon, named Cavity Plasmon here. This intense localization leads to a longer lifetime and enhances the recombination efficiency of excitons. We discuss several unique properties of the cavity plasmon generated by the polygonal metal microcavity with several specific angular shapes. The results demonstrate that the cavity plasmon generated by the polygonal metal microcavity is a highly promising technique for enhancing the light emission performance of of relevant semiconductor optoelectronic devices.

Local Avalanche Photodetectors Driven by Lightning-rod Effect and Surface Plasmon Excitations

Sensitive avalanche photodetectors (APDs) that operate within the ultraviolet spectrum are critically required for applications in detecting fire and deep-space exploration. However, the development of such devices faces significant challenges, including high avalanche breakdown voltage, the necessity for complex quenching circuits, and thermal runaway associated with Geiger-mode avalanche operation. To mitigate these issues, we report on a 4H-SiC APD design utilizing micro-holes (MHs) structures and Al nano-triangles (NTs) to enhance surface electric field driven by strong localized surface plasmon excitations and lightning-rod effect. The device demonstrates a record low avalanche breakdown voltage of approximately 14.5 V, a high detectivity of 7E13 Jones, a nanosecond-level response time, and repeated stable detections without the requirement of a quenching circuit. Collectively, when compared with the conventional wide-bandgap-based APDs, this device achieves a reduction in avalanche breakdown voltage by an order of magnitude and exhibits a substantial increase in detectivity. Consequently, the proposed APD configuration presents a promising candidate for ultraviolet detection and integrated optoelectronic circuits.

A Light-Emitting-Diodes-Integrated Silicon Carbide Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor

A light-emitting-diodes (LEDs)-integrated silicon carbide (SiC) insulated gate bipolar transistors (LI-IGBT) is proposed in this paper. The novelty of the LI-IGBT depends on the photogeneration effect of III-nitride LEDs embedded in the poly-Si regions of IGBT. Then, the photogenerated carriers are formed in the JFET region and the drift layer, indicating the increase of the conductivity in LI-IGBT as compared with the SiC IGBT with hole-barrier layer (H-IGBT) and the SiC IGBT with charge storage layer (CSL-IGBT). The static simulation results show that the electron density of the LI-IGBT at the middle of the drift layer is separately 17.44 times and 15.81 times higher than those of the H-IGBT and CSL-IGBT, yielding 40.91% and 37.38% reduction of forward voltage drop, respectively, and also, the LI-IGBT shows 304.59% and 263.67% improvements in BFOM as compared with CSL-IGBT and H-IGBT, respectively. For the dynamic simulation in one cycle, the loss of LI-IGBT is separately reduced by 6.57% and 8.57% compared to H-IGBT and CSL-IGBT. Meanwhile, the relationship between VC(sat) and Eturn-off can be optimized by adjusting collector doping and minority carrier lifetime. These results reveal that the proposed SiC IGBT will be more suitable for ultra-high voltage application.

AnimateAnything: Consistent and Controllable Animation for Video Generation

We present a unified controllable video generation approach AnimateAnything that facilitates precise and consistent video manipulation across various conditions, including camera trajectories, text prompts, and user motion annotations. Specifically, we carefully design a multi-scale control feature fusion network to construct a common motion representation for different conditions. It explicitly converts all control information into frame-by-frame optical flows. Then we incorporate the optical flows as motion priors to guide final video generation. In addition, to reduce the flickering issues caused by large-scale motion, we propose a frequency-based stabilization module. It can enhance temporal coherence by ensuring the video's frequency domain consistency. Experiments demonstrate that our method outperforms the state-of-the-art approaches. INDUS: Effective and Efficient Language Models for Scientific Applications

Large language models (LLMs) trained on general domain corpora showed remarkable results on natural language processing (NLP) tasks. However, previous research demonstrated LLMs trained using domain-focused corpora perform better on specialized tasks. Inspired by this insight, we developed INDUS, a comprehensive suite of LLMs tailored for the closely-related domains of Earth science, biology, physics, heliophysics, planetary sciences and astrophysics, and trained using curated scientific corpora drawn from diverse data sources. The suite of models include: (1) an encoder model trained using domain-specific vocabulary and corpora to address NLP tasks, (2) a contrastive-learning based text embedding model trained using a diverse set of datasets to address information retrieval tasks and (3) smaller versions of these models created using knowledge distillation for applications which have latency or resource constraints. We also created three new scientific benchmark datasets, CLIMATE-CHANGE NER (entity-recognition), NASA-QA (extractive QA) and NASA-IR (IR) to accelerate research in these multi-disciplinary fields. We show that our models outperform both general-purpose (RoBERTa) and domain-specific (SCIBERT) encoders on these new tasks as well as existing tasks in the domains of interest. Furthermore, we demonstrate the use of these models in two industrial settings -- as a retrieval model for large-scale vector search applications and in automatic content tagging systems.

Global strong solution of the 3D inhomogeneous liquid crystal flows with density-dependent viscosity and large velocity

This paper concerns the initial boundary value problem of three-dimensional inhomogeneous incompressible liquid crystal flows with density-dependent viscosity. When the viscosity coefficient $μ(ρ)$ is a power function of the density with the power larger than $1$, that is $μ(ρ)=μρ^α$ with $α>1$, it is proved that the system exists a unique global strong solution as long as the initial density is sufficiently large and $L^3$-norm of the derivative of the initial director is sufficiently small. This is the first result concerning the global strong solution for three-dimensional inhomogeneous liquid crystal flows without smallness of velocity.

StuGPTViz: A Visual Analytics Approach to Understand Student-ChatGPT Interactions

The integration of Large Language Models (LLMs), especially ChatGPT, into education is poised to revolutionize students' learning experiences by introducing innovative conversational learning methodologies. To empower students to fully leverage the capabilities of ChatGPT in educational scenarios, understanding students' interaction patterns with ChatGPT is crucial for instructors. However, this endeavor is challenging due to the absence of datasets focused on student-ChatGPT conversations and the complexities in identifying and analyzing the evolutional interaction patterns within conversations. To address these challenges, we collected conversational data from 48 students interacting with ChatGPT in a master's level data visualization course over one semester. We then developed a coding scheme, grounded in the literature on cognitive levels and thematic analysis, to categorize students' interaction patterns with ChatGPT. Furthermore, we present a visual analytics system, StuGPTViz, that tracks and compares temporal patterns in student prompts and the quality of ChatGPT's responses at multiple scales, revealing significant pedagogical insights for instructors. We validated the system's effectiveness through expert interviews with six data visualization instructors and three case studies. The results confirmed StuGPTViz's capacity to enhance educators' insights into the pedagogical value of ChatGPT. We also discussed the potential research opportunities of applying visual analytics in education and developing AI-driven personalized learning solutions.

Analytic properties of Speyer's $g$-polynomial of uniform matroids

Let $U_{n,d}$ denote the uniform matroid of rank $d$ on $n$ elements. We obtain some recurrence relations satisfied by Speyer's $g$-polynomials $g_{U_{n,d}}(t)$ of $U_{n,d}$. Based on these recurrence relations, we prove that the polynomial $g_{U_{n,d}}(t)$ has only real zeros for any $n-1\geq d\geq 1$. Furthermore, we show that the coefficient of $g_{U_{n,[n/2]}}(t)$ is asymptotically normal by local and central limit theorems.

Global large strong solutions to the compressible Navier-Stokes equations with density-dependent viscosities, case I: isentropic flows

In this paper, we consider the Cauchy problem for the three-dimensional barotropic compressible Navier-Stokes equations with density-dependent viscosities. By considering the system as an elliptic-dominated structure and defining suitable energy functionals, after the elaborate index analysis, we establish the global existence of strong solutions as long as the initial data is large enough. This is a big contrast to the classical results where the initial data is a small perturbation of some resting states.

Global large strong solution of the 3D inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes equations with density-dependent viscosity

This paper concerns the Dirichlet problem of three-dimensional inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes equations with density-dependent viscosity. When the viscosity coefficient $μ(ρ)$ is a power function of the density ($μ(ρ)=μρ^α$ with $α>1$), it is proved that the system will admit a unique global strong solution as long as the initial data are sufficiently large. This is the first result concerning the existence of large strong solution for the inhomogeneous Navier-Stokes equations in three dimensions.

fairBERTs: Erasing Sensitive Information Through Semantic and Fairness-aware Perturbations

Pre-trained language models (PLMs) have revolutionized both the natural language processing research and applications. However, stereotypical biases (e.g., gender and racial discrimination) encoded in PLMs have raised negative ethical implications for PLMs, which critically limits their broader applications. To address the aforementioned unfairness issues, we present fairBERTs, a general framework for learning fair fine-tuned BERT series models by erasing the protected sensitive information via semantic and fairness-aware perturbations generated by a generative adversarial network. Through extensive qualitative and quantitative experiments on two real-world tasks, we demonstrate the great superiority of fairBERTs in mitigating unfairness while maintaining the model utility. We also verify the feasibility of transferring adversarial components in fairBERTs to other conventionally trained BERT-like models for yielding fairness improvements. Our findings may shed light on further research on building fairer fine-tuned PLMs.

Advanced Financial Fraud Detection Using GNN-CL Model

The innovative GNN-CL model proposed in this paper marks a breakthrough in the field of financial fraud detection by synergistically combining the advantages of graph neural networks (gnn), convolutional neural networks (cnn) and long short-term memory (LSTM) networks. This convergence enables multifaceted analysis of complex transaction patterns, improving detection accuracy and resilience against complex fraudulent activities. A key novelty of this paper is the use of multilayer perceptrons (MLPS) to estimate node similarity, effectively filtering out neighborhood noise that can lead to false positives. This intelligent purification mechanism ensures that only the most relevant information is considered, thereby improving the model's understanding of the network structure. Feature weakening often plagues graph-based models due to the dilution of key signals. In order to further address the challenge of feature weakening, GNN-CL adopts reinforcement learning strategies. By dynamically adjusting the weights assigned to central nodes, it reinforces the importance of these influential entities to retain important clues of fraud even in less informative data. Experimental evaluations on Yelp datasets show that the results highlight the superior performance of GNN-CL compared to existing methods.

FE-GUT: Factor Graph Optimization hybrid with Extended Kalman Filter for tightly coupled GNSS/UWB Integration

Precise positioning and navigation information has been increasingly important with the development of the consumer electronics market. Due to some deficits of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), such as susceptible to interferences, integrating of GNSS with additional alternative sensors is a promising approach to overcome the performance limitations of GNSS-based localization systems. Ultra-Wideband (UWB) can be used to enhance GNSS in constructing an integrated localization system. However, most low-cost UWB devices lack a hardware-level time synchronization feature, which necessitates the estimation and compensation of the time-offset in the tightly coupled GNSS/UWB integration. Given the flexibility of probabilistic graphical models, the time-offset can be modeled as an invariant constant in the discretization of the continuous model. This work proposes a novel architecture in which Factor Graph Optimization (FGO) is hybrid with Extend Kalman Filter (EKF) for tightly coupled GNSS/UWB integration with online Temporal calibration (FE-GUT). FGO is utilized to precisely estimate the time-offset, while EKF provides initailization for the new factors and performs time-offset compensation. Simulation-based experiments validate the integrated localization performance of FE-GUT. In a four-wheeled robot scenario, the results demonstrate that, compared to EKF, FE-GUT can improve horizontal and vertical localization accuracy by 58.59\% and 34.80\%, respectively, while the time-offset estimation accuracy is improved by 76.80\%. Out-of-Plane Polarization from Spin Reflection Induces Field-Free Spin-Orbit Torque Switching in Structures with Canted NiO Interfacial Moments

Realizing deterministic current-induced spin-orbit torque (SOT) magnetization switching, especially in systems exhibiting perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA), typically requires the application of a collinear in-plane field, posing a challenging problem. In this study, we successfully achieve field-free SOT switching in the CoFeB/MgO system. In a Ta/CoFeB/MgO/NiO/Ta structure, spin reflection at the NiO interface, characterized by noncollinear spin structures with canted magnetization, generates a spin current with an out-of-plane spin polarization σz. We confirm the contribution of σz to the field-free SOT switching through measurements of the shift effect in the out-of-plane magnetization hysteresis loops under different currents. The incorporation of NiO as an antiferromagnetic insulator, mitigates the current shunting effect and ensures excellent thermal stability of the device. The sample with 0.8 nm MgO and 2 nm NiO demonstrates an impressive optimal switching ratio approaching 100% without an in-plane field. This breakthrough in the CoFeB/MgO system promises significant applications in spintronics, advancing us closer to realizing innovative technologies.

High-pressure characterization of Ag$_3$AuTe$_2$: Implications for strain-induced band tuning

Recent band structure calculations have suggested the potential for band tuning in a chiral semiconductor, Ag$_3$AuTe$_2$, to zero upon application of negative strain. In this study, we report on the synthesis of polycrystalline Ag$_3$AuTe$_2$ and investigate its transport, optical properties, and pressure compatibility. Transport measurements reveal the semiconducting behavior of Ag$_3$AuTe$_2$ with high resistivity and an activation energy $E_a$ of 0.2 eV. The optical band gap determined by diffuse reflectance measurements is about three times wider than the experimental $E_a$. Despite the difference, both experimental gaps fall within the range of predicted band gaps by our first-principles DFT calculations employing the PBE and mBJ methods. Furthermore, our DFT simulations predict a progressive narrowing of the band gap under compressive strain, with a full closure expected at a strain of -4% relative to the lattice parameter. To evaluate the feasibility of gap tunability at such substantial strain, the high-pressure behavior of Ag$_3$AuTe$_2$ was investigated by $in$ $situ$ high-pressure X-ray diffraction up to 47 GPa. Mechanical compression beyond 4% resulted in a pressure-induced structural transformation, indicating the possibilities of substantial gap modulation under extreme compression conditions.

CMOSE: Comprehensive Multi-Modality Online Student Engagement Dataset with High-Quality Labels

Online learning is a rapidly growing industry. However, a major doubt about online learning is whether students are as engaged as they are in face-to-face classes. An engagement recognition system can notify the instructors about the students condition and improve the learning experience. Current challenges in engagement detection involve poor label quality, extreme data imbalance, and intra-class variety - the variety of behaviors at a certain engagement level. To address these problems, we present the CMOSE dataset, which contains a large number of data from different engagement levels and high-quality labels annotated according to psychological advice. We also propose a training mechanism MocoRank to handle the intra-class variety and the ordinal pattern of different degrees of engagement classes. MocoRank outperforms prior engagement detection frameworks, achieving a 1.32% increase in overall accuracy and 5.05% improvement in average accuracy. Further, we demonstrate the effectiveness of multi-modality in engagement detection by combining video features with speech and audio features. The data transferability experiments also state that the proposed CMOSE dataset provides superior label quality and behavior diversity.

Text-Driven Diverse Facial Texture Generation via Progressive Latent-Space Refinement

Automatic 3D facial texture generation has gained significant interest recently. Existing approaches may not support the traditional physically based rendering pipeline or rely on 3D data captured by Light Stage. Our key contribution is a progressive latent space refinement approach that can bootstrap from 3D Morphable Models (3DMMs)-based texture maps generated from facial images to generate high-quality and diverse PBR textures, including albedo, normal, and roughness. It starts with enhancing Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs) for text-guided and diverse texture generation. To this end, we design a self-supervised paradigm to overcome the reliance on ground truth 3D textures and train the generative model with only entangled texture maps. Besides, we foster mutual enhancement between GANs and Score Distillation Sampling (SDS). SDS boosts GANs with more generative modes, while GANs promote more efficient optimization of SDS. Furthermore, we introduce an edge-aware SDS for multi-view consistent facial structure. Experiments demonstrate that our method outperforms existing 3D texture generation methods regarding photo-realistic quality, diversity, and efficiency.

A Direct Method of Moving Planes for Logarithmic Schrödinger Operator

In this paper, we study the radial symmetry and monotonicity of nonnegative solutions to nonlinear equations involving the logarithmic Schr$\ddot{\text{o}}$dinger operator $(\mathcal{I}-Δ)^{\log}$ corresponding to the logarithmic symbol $\log(1 + |ξ|^2)$, which is a singular integral operator given by $$(\mathcal{I}-Δ)^{\log}u(x) =c_{N}P.V.\int_{\mathbb{R}^{N}}\frac{u(x)-u(y)}{|x-y|^{N}}κ(|x-y|)dy,$$ where $c_{N}=π^{-\frac{N}{2}}$, $κ(r)=2^{1-\frac{N}{2}}r^{\frac{N}{2}}\mathcal{K}_{\frac{N}{2}}(r)$ and $\mathcal{K}_ν$ is the modified Bessel function of second kind with index $ν$. The proof hinges on a direct method of moving planes for the logarithmic Schr$\ddot{\text{o}}$dinger operator.
