Crystal electric field excitations and an effective-spin-$1/2$ ground doublet in the hyperkagome magnet Yb$_3$Sc$_2$Ga$_3$O$_{12}$

We use inelastic neutron scattering (INS) to determine the crystal electric field (CEF) excitations of Yb$^{3+}$ in the rare-earth hyperkagome magnet Yb$_3$Sc$_2$Ga$_3$O$_{12}$. Three nearly dispersionless magnetic excitations are observed near 58, 68, and 74~meV, corresponding to transitions from the ground-state Kramers doublet to the three excited doublets of the $J=7/2$ multiplet. A Stevens-operator analysis constrained by the local $222$ ($D_2$) symmetry reproduces the excitation energies and spectral weights and yields an Ising-type ground-state $g$ tensor. The first excited doublet lies approximately 58~meV above the ground state, establishing a well-isolated effective $J_{\mathrm{eff}}=1/2$ degree of freedom over the low-temperature regime relevant to collective magnetism. Notably, the directly measured CEF spectrum substantially revises the level scheme previously inferred from bulk measurements, while preserving the essential low-energy pseudospin description. Two independent fitting protocols give consistent excitation energies, ground-doublet wave functions, and $g$ tensors, despite the nonuniqueness of the individual CEF parameters. The resulting single-ion model also reproduces the characteristic susceptibility, magnetization, and field evolution of the Schottky anomaly in specific heat. These results establish the microscopic single-ion basis needed to construct an effective exchange Hamiltonian and to interpret future measurements of low-energy collective excitations in Yb$_3$Sc$_2$Ga$_3$O$_{12}$.

Nanoscale Imaging of Strain-Controlled Altermagnetic Domains in {\alpha}-MnTe

Altermagnets combine compensated magnetic order with momentum-dependent spin splitting, offering a route to spintronic functionality without the stray fields of conventional ferromagnets. Mechanical strain provides a promising means of controlling their N\'eel order, yet the microscopic pathway by which strain reorganizes an altermagnetic texture remains unresolved. Here, we combine scanning nitrogen-vacancy magnetometry with a piezo-driven uniaxial strain cell to directly image the strain-driven evolution of magnetic domains in bulk {\alpha}-MnTe at room temperature. By applying uniaxial stress along the nearest-neighbor Mn-Mn bond direction, we find that compressive strain reorganizes the magnetic texture through domain coalescence, increasing the size of the largest connected domain while reducing the domain-wall density. On sweeping toward tensile strain direction, however, the domain network follows a distinct trajectory from that observed during the compressive sweep. Instead, the large connected regions fragment into a new metastable configuration, producing pronounced hysteresis in the maximum domain size and stray-field distribution. These results identify domain connectivity and topology as key carriers of strain-induced magnetic memory. Our work reveals domain coalescence and hysteretic fragmentation as the microscopic pathway of strain control in {\alpha}-MnTe and establishes a route toward strain-programmable altermagnetic textures and reconfigurable spintronic devices.

Field-induced first order transitions and phase coexistence in the Kitaev quantum spin liquid candidate BaCo2(AsO4)2

BaCo2(AsO4)2 (BCAO) is an insulating Kitaev quantum spin liquid candidate with a rich low-temperature phase diagram. Below 5 K, it exhibits double-zigzag magnetic order. Upon application of an in-plane magnetic field, the magnetic structure first transforms into an up-up-down (UUD) state near 0.12 T and then enters a fully spin-polarized ferromagnetic (FM) state near 0.5 T. In the narrow field regime close to the polarized phase, a finite residual thermal conductivity has been reported, suggesting a possible field-induced quantum spin liquid phase. Using neutron scattering, we show that the field-induced double-zigzag-to-UUD transition near 0.15 T is accompanied by the emergence of a cluster of localized UUD spin excitations that coexist with conventional spin waves. Upon further increasing field, BCAO undergoes a first-order UUD-to-FM transition with coexistence of UUD and FM phases, accompanied by a sharp response in the spin Seebeck coefficient. These results do not support a quantum spin liquid scenario near the UUD-to-FM critical field. Instead, modeling indicates that the broad excitations arise from bound spin-flip pairs, while a low-lying dispersive branch near the FM phase boundary carries the same sign of magnetization as the FM order. These excitations naturally account for the observed sign of the spin Seebeck response and are likely relevant to the thermal conductivity near the critical field.
