Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov superfluidity in one-dimensional optical lattices

Spin-polarized attractive Fermi gases in one-dimensional (1D) optical lattices are expected to be remarkably good candidates for the observation of the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phase. We model these systems with an attractive Hubbard model with population imbalance. By means of the density-matrix renormalization-group method we compute the pairing correlations as well as the static spin and charge structure factors in the whole range from weak to strong coupling. We demonstrate that pairing correlations exhibit quasi-long range order and oscillations at the wave number expected from FFLO theory. However, we also show by numerically computing the mixed spin-charge static structure factor that charge and spin degrees of freedom appear to be coupled already for small imbalance. We discuss the consequences of this coupling for the observation of the FFLO phase, as well as for the stabilization of the quasi-long range order into long-range order by coupling many identical 1D systems, as in quasi-1D optical lattices.

Nonequilibrium spin-dependent phenomena in mesoscopic superconductor-normal metal tunnel structures

We analyze the broad range of spin-dependent nonequilibrium transport properties of hybrid systems composed of a normal region tunnel coupled to two superconductors with exchange fields induced by the proximity to thin ferromagnetic layers and highlight its functionalities. By calculating the quasiparticle distribution functions in the normal region we find that they are spin-dependent and strongly sensitive to the relative angle between exchange fields in the two superconductors. The impact of inelastic collisions on their properties is addressed. As a result, the electric current flowing through the system is found to be strongly dependent on the relative angle between exchange fields, giving rise to a huge value of magnetoresistance. Moreover, the current presents a complete spin-polarization in a wide range of bias voltages, even in the quasiequilibrium case. In the nonequilibrium limit we parametrize the distributions with an ``effective`` temperature, which turns out to be strongly spin-dependent, though quite sensitive to inelastic collisions. By tunnel coupling the normal region to an additional superconducting electrode we show that it is possible to implement a spin-polarized current source of both spin species, depending on the bias voltages applied.

Nonequilibrium pairing instability in ultracold Fermi gases with population imbalance

We present detailed numerical and analytical investigations of the nonequilibrium dynamics of spin-polarized ultracold Fermi gases following a sudden switching-on of the atom-atom pairing coupling strength. Within a time-dependent mean-field approach we show that on increasing the imbalance it takes longer for pairing to develop, the period of the nonlinear oscillations lengthens, and the maximum value of the pairing amplitude decreases. As expected, dynamical pairing is suppressed by the increase of the imbalance. Eventually, for a critical value of the imbalance the nonlinear oscillations do not even develop. Finally, we point out an interesting temperature-reentrant behavior of the exponent characterizing the initial instability.

Mott-insulating and glassy phases of polaritons in 1D arrays of coupled cavities

By means of analytical and numerical methods we analyze the phase diagram of polaritons in one-dimensional coupled cavities. We locate the phase boundary, discuss the behavior of the polariton compressibility and visibility fringes across the critical point, and find a non-trivial scaling of the phase boundary as a function of the number of atoms inside each cavity. We also predict the emergence of a polaritonic glassy phase when the number of atoms fluctuates from cavity to cavity.

Robust optimal quantum gates for Josephson charge qubits

Quantum optimal control theory allows to design accurate quantum gates. We employ it to design high-fidelity two-bit gates for Josephson charge qubits in the presence of both leakage and noise. Our protocol considerably increases the fidelity of the gate and, more important, it is quite robust in the disruptive presence of 1/f noise. The improvement in the gate performances discussed in this work (errors of the order of 10^{-3}-10^{-4} in realistic cases) allows to cross the fault tolerance threshold.

Multi-channel architecture for electronic quantum-Hall interferometry

We propose a new architecture for implementing electronic interferometry in quantum Hall bars. It exploits scattering among parallel edge channels. In contrast to previous developments, this one employs a simply-connected mesa admitting serial concatenation of building elements closer to optical analogues. Implementations of Mach-Zehnder and Hambury-Brown-Twiss interferometers are discussed together with new structures yet unexplored in quantum electronics.

Pumping through a quantum dot in the proximity of a superconductor

We study adiabatic pumping through a quantum dot tunnel-coupled to one normal and one superconducting lead. We generalize a formula which relates the pumped charge through a quantum dot with Coulomb interaction to the instantaneous local Green's function of the dot, to systems containing a superconducting lead. First, we apply this formula to the case of a non-interacting, single-level quantum dot in different temperature regimes and for different parameter choices, and we compare the results with the case of a system comprising only normal leads. Then we study the infinite-U Anderson model with a superconducting lead at zero temperature, and we discuss the effect of the proximity of the superconductor on the pumped charge.

dc Josephson Effect in Metallic Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes

The dc Josephson effect is investigated in a single-walled metallic carbon nanotube connected to two superconducting leads. In particular, by using the Luttinger liquid theory, we analyze the effects of the electron-electron interaction on the supercurrent. We find that in the long junction limit the strong electronic correlations of the nanotube, together with its peculiar band structure, induce oscillations in the critical current as a function of the junction length and/or the nanotube electron filling. These oscillations represent a signature of the Luttinger liquid physics of the nanotube, for they are absent if the interaction is vanishing. We show that this effect can be exploited to reverse the sign of the supercurrent, realizing a tunable π-junction.

Qubits as devices to detect the third moment of current fluctuations

Under appropriate conditions controllable two-level systems can be used to detect the third moment of current fluctuations. We derive a Master Equation for a quantum system coupled to a bath valid to the third order in the coupling between the system and the environment. In this approximation the reduced dynamics of the quantum system depends on the frequency dependent third moment. Specializing to the case of a controllable two-level system (a qubit) and in the limit in which the splitting between the levels is much smaller than the characteristic frequency of the third moment, it is possible to show that the decay of the qubit has additional oscillations whose amplitude is directly proportional to the value of the third moment. We discuss an experimental setup where this effect can be seen.

Decoherence induced by interacting quantum spin baths

We study decoherence induced on a two-level system coupled to a one-dimensional quantum spin chain. We consider the cases where the dynamics of the chain is determined by the Ising, XY, or Heisenberg exchange Hamiltonian. This model of quantum baths can be of fundamental importance for the understanding of decoherence in open quantum systems, since it can be experimentally engineered by using atoms in optical lattices. As an example, here we show how to implement a pure dephasing model for a qubit system coupled to an interacting spin bath. We provide results that go beyond the case of a central spin coupled uniformly to all the spins of the bath, in particular showing what happens when the bath enters different phases, or becomes critical; we also study the dependence of the coherence loss on the number of bath spins to which the system is coupled and we describe a coupling-independent regime in which decoherence exhibits universal features, irrespective of the system-environment coupling strength. Finally, we establish a relation between decoherence and entanglement inside the bath. For the Ising and the XY models we are able to give an exact expression for the decay of coherences, while for the Heisenberg bath we resort to the numerical time-dependent Density Matrix Renormalization Group.

Entanglement production in chaotic quantum dots subject to spin-orbit coupling

We study numerically the production of orbital and spin entangled states in chaotic quantum dots for non-interacting electrons. The introduction of spin-orbit coupling permit us to identify signatures of time-reversal symmetry correlations in the entanglement production previously unnoticed, resembling weak-(anti)localization quantum corrections to the conductance. We find the entanglement to be strongly dependent on spin-orbit coupling, showing universal features for broken time-reversal and spin-rotation symmetries.

Luther-Emery Phase and Atomic-Density Waves in a Trapped Fermion Gas

The Luther-Emery liquid is a state of matter that is predicted to occur in one-dimensional systems of interacting fermions and is characterized by a gapless charge spectrum and a gapped spin spectrum. In this Letter we discuss a realization of the Luther-Emery phase in a trapped cold-atom gas. We study by means of the density-matrix renormalization-group technique a two-component atomic Fermi gas with attractive interactions subject to parabolic trapping inside an optical lattice. We demonstrate how this system exhibits compound phases characterized by the coexistence of spin pairing and atomic-density waves. A smooth crossover occurs with increasing magnitude of the atom-atom attraction to a state in which tightly bound spin-singlet dimers occupy the center of the trap. The existence of atomic-density waves could be detected in the elastic contribution to the light-scattering diffraction pattern.

Adiabatic pumping through a quantum dot with coulomb interactions: A perturbation expansion in the tunnel coupling

We present a diagrammatic real-time approach to adiabatic pumping of electrons through interacting quantum dots. Performing a systematic perturbation expansion in the tunnel-coupling strength, we compute the charge pumped through a single-level quantum dot per pumping cycle. The combination of Coulomb interaction and quantum fluctuations, accounted for in contributions of higher order in the tunnel coupling, modifies the pumping characteristics via an interaction-dependent renormalization of the quantum-dot level. The latter is even responsible for the {\em dominant} contribution to the pumped charge when pumping via time-dependent tunnel-coupling strengths.

Decoherence by engineered quantum baths

We introduce, and determine decoherence for, a wide class of non-trivial quantum spin baths which embrace Ising, XY and Heisenberg universality classes coupled to a two-level system. For the XY and Ising universality classes we provide an exact expression for the decay of the loss of coherence beyond the case of a central spin coupled uniformly to all the spins of the baths which has been discussed so far in the literature. In the case of the Heisenberg spin bath we study the decoherence by means of the time-dependent density matrix renormalization group. We show how these baths can be engineered, by using atoms in optical lattices.

Superconducting Fluctuation Corrections to the Thermal Current in Granular Metals

The first-order superconducting fluctuation corrections to the thermal conductivity of a granular metal are calculated. A suppression of thermal conductivity proportional to $T_c/(T-T_c)$ is observed in a region not too close to the critical temperature $T_c$. As $T\simeq T_c$, a saturation of the correction is found, and its sign depends on the ratio between the barrier transparency and the critical temperature. In both regimes, the Wiedemann-Franz law is violated.

Robustness of optimal working points for non-adiabatic holonomic quantum computation

Geometric phases are an interesting resource for quantum computation, also in view of their robustness against decoherence effects. We study here the effects of the environment on a class of one-qubit holonomic gates that have been recently shown to be characterized by "optimal" working times. We numerically analyze the behavior of these optimal points and focus on their robustness against noise.

Huge nonequilibrium magnetoresistance in hybrid superconducting spin valves

A hybrid ferromagnet-superconductor spin valve is proposed. Its operation relies on the interplay between nonequilibrium transport and proximity-induced exchange coupling in superconductors. Huge tunnel magnetoresistance values as large as some 10^6% can be achieved in suitable ferromagnet-superconductor combinations under proper voltage biasing. The controllable spin-filter nature of the structure combined with its intrinsic simplicity make this setup attractive for low-temperature spintronic applications where reduced power dissipation is an additional requirement.
