Adiabatic pumping in a Superconductor-Normal-Superconductor weak link

We present a formalism to study adiabatic pumping through a superconductor - normal - superconductor weak link. At zero temperature, the pumped charge is related to the Berry phase accumulated, in a pumping cycle, by the Andreev bound states. We analyze in detail the case when the normal region is short compared to the superconducting coherence length. The pumped charge turns out to be an even function of the superconducting phase difference. Hence, it can be distinguished from the charge transferred due to the standard Josephson effect.

Adiabatic pumping through interacting quantum dots

We present a general formalism to study adiabatic pumping through interacting quantum dots. We derive a formula that relates the pumped charge to the local, instantaneous Green function of the dot. This formula is then applied to the infinite-U Anderson model both for weak and strong tunnel-coupling strengths.

Phase diagram of spin-1 bosons on one-dimensional lattices

Spinor Bose condensates loaded in optical lattices have a rich phase diagram characterized by different magnetic order. Here we apply the Density Matrix Renormalization Group to accurately determine the phase diagram for spin-1 bosons loaded on a one-dimensional lattice. The Mott lobes present an even or odd asymmetry associated to the boson filling. We show that for odd fillings the insulating phase is always in a dimerized state. The results obtained in this work are also relevant for the determination of the ground state phase diagram of the S=1 Heisenberg model with biquadratic interaction.

Clauser-Horne inequality and decoherence in mesoscopic conductors

We analyze the effect of decoherence on the violation of the Clauser-Horne (CH) inequality for the full electron counting statistics in a mesoscopic multiterminal conductor. Our setup consists of an entangler that emits a flux of entangled electrons into two conductors characterized by a scattering matrix and subject to decoherence. Loss of phase memory is modeled phenomenologically by introducing fictitious extra leads. The outgoing electrons are detected using spin-sensitive electron counters. Given a certain average number of incoming entangled electrons, the CH inequality is evaluated as a function of the numbers of detected particles and on the various quantities characterizing the scattering matrix. When decoherence is turned on, we show that the amount of violation of the CH inequality is effectively reduced. Interestingly we find that, by adjusting the parameters of the system, there exists a protected region of $Q$ values for which violation holds for arbitrary strong decoherence.

Quantum relative positioning in Hilbert space

A new class of state transformations that are quantum mechanically prohibited is introduced. These can be seen as the generalization of the universal-NOT transformation which, for all pure inputs state of a given Hilbert space produces pure outputs whose projection on the original state is fixed to a value smaller than one. The case of not pure output states is also addressed. We give an application of these transformations in the context of separability criteria.

Geometric phases and Andreev reflection in hybrid rings

We study the Andreev reflection of a hybrid mesoscopic ring in the presence of a crown-like magnetic texture. By calculating the linear-response conductance as a function of the Zeeman splitting and the magnetic flux through the ring, we are able to identify signatures of the Berry phase acquired by the electrons during transport. This is proposed as a novel detection scheme of the spin-related Berry phase, having the advantage of a larger signal contrast and robustness against ensemble averaging.

Full Counting Statistics in Strongly Interacting Systems: Non-Markovian Effects

We present a theory of full counting statistics for electron transport through interacting electron systems with non-Markovian dynamics. We illustrate our approach for transport through a single-level quantum dot and a metallic single-electron transistor to second order in the tunnel-coupling strength, and discuss under which circumstances non-Markovian effects appear in the transport properties.

From perfect to fractal transmission in spin chains

Perfect state transfer is possible in modulated spin chains, imperfections however are likely to corrupt the state transfer. We study the robustness of this quantum communication protocol in the presence of disorder both in the exchange couplings between the spins and in the local magnetic field. The degradation of the fidelity can be suitably expressed, as a function of the level of imperfection and the length of the chain, in a scaling form. In addition the time signal of fidelity becomes fractal. We further characterize the state transfer by analyzing the spectral properties of the Hamiltonian of the spin chain.

Information-capacity description of spin-chain correlations

Information capacities achievable in the multi-parallel-use scenarios are employed to characterize the quantum correlations in unmodulated spin chains. By studying the qubit amplitude damping channel, we calculate the quantum capacity $Q$, the entanglement assisted capacity $C_E$, and the classical capacity $C_1$ of a spin chain with ferromagnetic Heisenberg interactions.

Thermal transport in granular metals

We study the electron thermal transport in granular metals at large tunnel conductance between the grains, $g_T \gg 1$ and not too low a temperature $T > g_Tδ$, where $δ$ is the mean energy level spacing for a single grain. Taking into account the electron-electron interaction effects we calculate the thermal conductivity and show that the Wiedemann-Franz law is violated for granular metals. We find that interaction effects suppress the thermal conductivity less than the electrical conductivity.

Fully Frustrated Cold Atoms

Fully frustrated Josephson Junction arrays (FF-JJA's) exhibit a subtle compound phase transition in which an Ising transition associated with discrete broken translational symmetry and a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition associated with quasi-long-range phase coherence occur nearly simultaneously. In this Letter we discuss a cold atom realization of the FF-JJA system. We demonstrate that both orders can be studied by standard momentum-distribution-function measurements and present numerical results, based on a successful self-consistent spin-wave approximation, that illustrate the expected behavior of observables.

Continuous measurements of two qubits

We develop a theory of coherent quantum oscillations in two, in general interacting, qubits measured continuously by a mesoscopic detector with arbitrary non-linearity and discuss an example of SQUID magnetometer that can operate as such a detector. Calculated spectra of the detector output show that the detector non-linearity should lead to mixing of the oscillations of the two qubits. For non-interacting qubits oscillating with frequencies $Ω_1$ and $Ω_2$, the mixing manifests itself as spectral peaks at the combination frequencies $Ω_1\pm Ω_2$. Additional nonlinearity introduced by the qubit-qubit interaction shifts all the frequencies. In particular, for identical qubits, the interaction splits coherent superposition of the single-qubit peaks at $Ω_1=Ω_2$. Quantum mechanics of the measurement imposes limitations on the height of the spectral peaks.

Solid-State Quantum Communication With Josephson Arrays

Josephson junction arrays can be used as quantum channels to transfer quantum information between distant sites. In this work we discuss simple protocols to realize state transfer with high fidelity. The channels do not require complicate gating but use the natural dynamics of a properly designed array. We investigate the influence of static disorder both in the Josephson energies and in the coupling to the background gate charges, as well as the effect of dynamical noise. We also analyze the readout process, and its backaction on the state transfer.

The charge shuttle as a nanomechanical ratchet

We consider the charge shuttle proposed by Gorelik {\em et al.} driven by a time-dependent voltage bias. In the case of asymmetric setup, the system behaves as a rachet. For pure AC drive, the rectified current shows a complex frequency dependent response characterized by frequency locking at fracional values of the external frequency. Due to the non-linear dynamics of the shuttle, the rachet effect is present also for very low frequencies.

Dynamical Imperfections in quantum computers

We study the effects of dynamical imperfections in quantum computers. By considering an explicit example, we identify different regimes ranging from the low-frequency case, where the imperfections can be considered as static but with renormalized parameters, to the high frequency fluctuations, where the effects of imperfections are completely wiped out. We generalize our results by proving a theorem on the dynamical evolution of a system in the presence of dynamical perturbations.

Chaotic dynamics in superconducting nanocircuits

The quantum kicked rotator can be realized in a periodically driven superconducting nanocircuit. A study of the fidelity allows the experimental investigation of exponential instability of quantum motion inside the Ehrenfest time scale, chaotic diffusion and quantum dynamical localization. The role of noise and the experimental setup to measure the fidelity is discussed as well.

Mesoscopic supercurrent transistor controlled by nonequilibrium cooling

The distinctive quasiparticle distribution existing under nonequilibrium in a superconductor-insulator-normal metal-insulator-superconductor (SINIS) mesoscopic line is proposed as a novel tool to control the supercurrent intensity in a long Josephson weak link. We present a description of this system in the framework of the diffusive-limit quasiclassical Green-function theory and take into account the effects of inelastic scattering with arbitrary strength. Supercurrent enhancement and suppression, including a marked transition to a $π$-junction are striking features leading to a fully tunable structure. The role of the degree of nonequilibrium, temperature, and materials choice as well as features like noise, switching time, and current and power gain are also addressed.

Andreev interference in adiabatic pumping

Within the scattering approach, we develop a model for adiabatic quantum pumping in hybrid normal/superconductor systems where several superconducting leads are present. This is exploited to study Andreev-interference effects on adiabatically pumped charge in a 3-arm beam splitter attached to one normal and two superconducting leads with different phases of the order parameters. We derive expressions for the pumped charge through the normal lead for different parameters for the scattering region, and elucidate the effects due to Andreev interference. In contrast to what happens for voltage-driven transport, Andreev interference does not yield in general a pumped current which is a symmetric function of the superconducting-phase difference.
