Defending Adversarial Attacks by Correcting logits

Generating and eliminating adversarial examples has been an intriguing topic in the field of deep learning. While previous research verified that adversarial attacks are often fragile and can be defended via image-level processing, it remains unclear how high-level features are perturbed by such attacks. We investigate this issue from a new perspective, which purely relies on logits, the class scores before softmax, to detect and defend adversarial attacks. Our defender is a two-layer network trained on a mixed set of clean and perturbed logits, with the goal being recovering the original prediction. Upon a wide range of adversarial attacks, our simple approach shows promising results with relatively high accuracy in defense, and the defender can transfer across attackers with similar properties. More importantly, our defender can work in the scenarios that image data are unavailable, and enjoys high interpretability especially at the semantic level.

Near-room-temperature giant topological Hall effect in antiferromagnetic kagome metal YMn6Sn6

The kagome lattice, consisting of interconnected triangles and hexagons uniquely, is an excellent model system for study frustrated magnetism, electronic correlation and topological electronic structure. After an intensive investigation on frustrated magnetism in insulating magnetic kagome lattices, the interplay between charge and spin degrees of freedom via spin-orbital coupling in metallic systems (kagome metals) has become an attractive topic recently. Here, we study centrosymmetric YMn6Sn6 with Mn kagome lattice. We discover that it exhibits giant topological Hall effect near room temperature, ascribed to the field-induced non-collinear spin texture, possibly a skyrmion lattice (SkL) state. Combined with the large intrinsic anomalous Hall effect, YMn6Sn6 shows a synergic effect of real- and momentum-space Berry phase on physical properties. Since the features of tunable magnetic interaction and flexible structure in this large homologous series, it provides a novel platform for understanding the influence of electronic correlations on topological quantum states in both real and momentum spaces.

Energy Efficiency Maximization for Full-Duplex UAV Secrecy Communication

This letter proposes a new full-duplex (FD) secrecy communication scheme for the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) and investigates its optimal design to achieve the maximum energy efficiency (EE) of the UAV. Specifically, the UAV receives the confidential information from a ground source and meanwhile sends jamming signals to interfere with a potential ground eavesdropper. As the UAV has limited on-board energy in practice, we aim to maximize the EE for its secrecy communication, by jointly optimizing the UAV trajectory and the source/UAV transmit/jamming powers over a finite flight period with given initial and final locations. Although the problem is difficult to solve, we propose an efficient iterative algorithm to obtain its suboptimal solution. Simulation results show that the proposed joint design can significantly improve the EE of UAV secrecy communication, as compared to various benchmark schemes.

Improving Low-Resource Cross-lingual Document Retrieval by Reranking with Deep Bilingual Representations

In this paper, we propose to boost low-resource cross-lingual document retrieval performance with deep bilingual query-document representations. We match queries and documents in both source and target languages with four components, each of which is implemented as a term interaction-based deep neural network with cross-lingual word embeddings as input. By including query likelihood scores as extra features, our model effectively learns to rerank the retrieved documents by using a small number of relevance labels for low-resource language pairs. Due to the shared cross-lingual word embedding space, the model can also be directly applied to another language pair without any training label. Experimental results on the MATERIAL dataset show that our model outperforms the competitive translation-based baselines on English-Swahili, English-Tagalog, and English-Somali cross-lingual information retrieval tasks.

This Email Could Save Your Life: Introducing the Task of Email Subject Line Generation

Given the overwhelming number of emails, an effective subject line becomes essential to better inform the recipient of the email's content. In this paper, we propose and study the task of email subject line generation: automatically generating an email subject line from the email body. We create the first dataset for this task and find that email subject line generation favor extremely abstractive summary which differentiates it from news headline generation or news single document summarization. We then develop a novel deep learning method and compare it to several baselines as well as recent state-of-the-art text summarization systems. We also investigate the efficacy of several automatic metrics based on correlations with human judgments and propose a new automatic evaluation metric. Our system outperforms competitive baselines given both automatic and human evaluations. To our knowledge, this is the first work to tackle the problem of effective email subject line generation.

Analyzing Social Media Data to Understand Consumers' Information Needs on Dietary Supplements

Despite the high consumption of dietary supplements (DS), there are not many reliable, relevant, and comprehensive online resources that could satisfy information seekers. The purpose of this research study is to understand consumers' information needs on DS using topic modeling and to evaluate its accuracy in correctly identifying topics from social media. We retrieved 16,095 unique questions posted on Yahoo! Answers relating to 438 unique DS ingredients mentioned in sub-section, "Alternative medicine" under the section, "Health". We implemented an unsupervised topic modeling method, Correlation Explanation (CorEx) to unveil the various topics consumers are most interested in. We manually reviewed the keywords of all the 200 topics generated by CorEx and assigned them to 38 health-related categories, corresponding to 12 higher-level groups. We found high accuracy (90-100%) in identifying questions that correctly align with the selected topics. The results could be used to guide us to generate a more comprehensive and structured DS resource based on consumers' information needs.

SParC: Cross-Domain Semantic Parsing in Context

We present SParC, a dataset for cross-domainSemanticParsing inContext that consists of 4,298 coherent question sequences (12k+ individual questions annotated with SQL queries). It is obtained from controlled user interactions with 200 complex databases over 138 domains. We provide an in-depth analysis of SParC and show that it introduces new challenges compared to existing datasets. SParC demonstrates complex contextual dependencies, (2) has greater semantic diversity, and (3) requires generalization to unseen domains due to its cross-domain nature and the unseen databases at test time. We experiment with two state-of-the-art text-to-SQL models adapted to the context-dependent, cross-domain setup. The best model obtains an exact match accuracy of 20.2% over all questions and less than10% over all interaction sequences, indicating that the cross-domain setting and the con-textual phenomena of the dataset present significant challenges for future research. The dataset, baselines, and leaderboard are released at https://yale-lily.github.io/sparc.

Exploiting Offset-guided Network for Pose Estimation and Tracking

Human pose estimation has witnessed a significant advance thanks to the development of deep learning. Recent human pose estimation approaches tend to directly predict the location heatmaps, which causes quantization errors and inevitably deteriorates the performance within the reduced network output. Aim at solving it, we revisit the heatmap-offset aggregation method and propose the Offset-guided Network (OGN) with an intuitive but effective fusion strategy for both two-stages pose estimation and Mask R-CNN. For two-stages pose estimation, a greedy box generation strategy is also proposed to keep more necessary candidates while performing person detection. For mask R-CNN, ratio-consistent is adopted to improve the generalization ability of the network. State-of-the-art results on COCO and PoseTrack dataset verify the effectiveness of our offset-guided pose estimation and tracking.

Secure Wireless Communication via Intelligent Reflecting Surface

An intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) can adaptively adjust the phase shifts of its reflecting units to strengthen the desired signal and/or suppress the undesired signal. In this letter, we investigate an IRS-aided secure wireless communication system where a multi-antenna access point (AP) sends confidential messages to a single-antenna user in the presence of a single-antenna eavesdropper. In particular, we consider the challenging scenario where the eavesdropping channel is stronger than the legitimate communication channel and they are also highly correlated in space. We maximize the secrecy rate of the legitimate communication link by jointly designing the AP's transmit beamforming and the IRS's reflect beamforming. While the resultant optimization problem is difficult to solve, we propose an efficient algorithm to obtain high-quality suboptimal solution for it by applying the alternating optimization and semidefinite relaxation methods. Simulation results show that the proposed design significantly improves the secrecy communication rate for the considered setup over the case without using the IRS, and outperforms a heuristic scheme.

Anisotropic spin fluctuations in detwinned FeSe

Superconductivity in FeSe emerges from a nematic phase that breaks four-fold rotational symmetry in the iron plane. This phase may arise from orbital ordering, spin fluctuations, or hidden magnetic quadrupolar order. Here we use inelastic neutron scattering on a mosaic of single crystals of FeSe detwinned by mounting on a BaFe2As2 substrate to demonstrate that spin excitations are most intense at the antiferromagnetic wave vectors QAF = (1, 0) at low energies E = 6-11 meV in the normal state. This two-fold (C2) anisotropy is reduced at lower energies 3-5 meV, indicating a gapped four-fold (C4) mode. In the superconducting state, however, the strong nematic anisotropy is again reflected in the spin resonance (E = 3.7 meV) at QAF with incommensurate scattering around 5-6 meV. Our results highlight the extreme electronic anisotropy of the nematic phase of FeSe and are consistent with a highly anisotropic superconducting gap driven by spin fluctuations.

From Brain Imaging to Graph Analysis: a study on ADNI's patient cohort

In this paper, we studied the association between the change of structural brain volumes to the potential development of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Using a simple abstraction technique, we converted regional cortical and subcortical volume differences over two time points for each study subject into a graph. We then obtained substructures of interest using a graph decomposition algorithm in order to extract pivotal nodes via multi-view feature selection. Intensive experiments using robust classification frameworks were conducted to evaluate the performance of using the brain substructures obtained under different thresholds. The results indicated that compact substructures acquired by examining the differences between patient groups were sufficient to discriminate between AD and healthy controls with an area under the receiver operating curve of 0.72.

3D Trajectory Optimization in Rician Fading for UAV-Enabled Data Harvesting

In this paper, we consider a UAV-enabled WSN where a flying UAV is employed to collect data from multiple sensor nodes (SNs). Our objective is to maximize the minimum average data collection rate from all SNs subject to a prescribed reliability constraint for each SN by jointly optimizing the UAV communication scheduling and three-dimensional (3D) trajectory. Different from the existing works that assume the simplified line-of-sight (LoS) UAV-ground channels, we consider the more practically accurate angle-dependent Rician fading channels between the UAV and SNs with the Rician factors determined by the corresponding UAV-SN elevation angles. However, the formulated optimization problem is intractable due to the lack of a closed-form expression for a key parameter termed effective fading power that characterizes the achievable rate given the reliability requirement in terms of outage probability. To tackle this difficulty, we first approximate the parameter by a logistic ('S' shape) function with respect to the 3D UAV trajectory by using the data regression method. Then the original problem is reformulated to an approximate form, which, however, is still challenging to solve due to its non-convexity. As such, we further propose an efficient algorithm to derive its suboptimal solution by using the block coordinate descent technique, which iteratively optimizes the communication scheduling, the UAV's horizontal trajectory, and its vertical trajectory. The latter two subproblems are shown to be non-convex, while locally optimal solutions are obtained for them by using the successive convex approximation technique. Last, extensive numerical results are provided to evaluate the performance of the proposed algorithm and draw new insights on the 3D UAV trajectory under the Rician fading as compared to conventional LoS channel models.

Optimal Cyber-Insurance Contract Design for Dynamic Risk Management and Mitigation

With the recent growing number of cyberattacks and the constant lack of effective defense methods, cyber risks become ubiquitous in enterprise networks, manufacturing plants, and government computer systems. Cyber-insurance provides a valuable approach to transfer the cyber risks to insurance companies and further improve the security status of the insured. The designation of effective cyber-insurance contracts requires the considerations from both the insurance market and the dynamic properties of the cyber risks. To capture the interactions between the users and the insurers, we present a dynamic moral-hazard type of principal-agent model incorporated with Markov decision processes, which are used to capture the dynamics and correlations of the cyber risks as well as the user's decisions on the protections. We study and fully analyze a case with a two-state two-action user under linear coverage insurance, and we further show the risk compensation, Peltzman effect, linear insurance contract principle, and zero-operating profit principle in this case. Numerical experiments are provided to verify our conclusions and further extend to cases of a four-state three-action user under linear coverage insurance and threshold coverage insurance.

Network-Connected UAV: 3D System Modeling and Coverage Performance Analysis

With growing popularity, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are pivotally extending conventional terrestrial Internet of Things (IoT) into the sky. To enable high-performance two-way communications of UAVs with their ground pilots/users, cellular network-connected UAV has drawn significant interests recently. Among others, an important issue is whether the existing cellular network, designed mainly for terrestrial users, is also able to effectively cover the new UAV users in the three-dimensional (3D) space for both uplink and downlink communications. Such 3D coverage analysis is challenging due to the unique air-ground channel characteristics, the resulted interference issue with terrestrial communication, and the non-uniform 3D antenna gain pattern of ground base station (GBS) in practice. Particularly, high-altitude UAV often possesses a high probability of line-of-sight (LoS) channels with a large number of GBSs, while their random binary (LoS/Non-LoS) channel states and (on/off) activities give rise to exponentially large number of discrete UAV-GBS association/interference states, rendering coverage analysis more difficult. This paper presents a new 3D system model to incorporate UAV users and proposes an analytical framework to characterize their uplink/downlink 3D coverage performance. To tackle the above exponential complexity, we introduce a generalized Poisson multinomial (GPM) distribution to model the discrete interference states, and a novel lattice approximation (LA) technique to approximate the non-lattice GPM variable and obtain the interference distribution efficiently with high accuracy. The 3D coverage analysis is validated by extensive numerical results, which also show effects of key system parameters such as cell loading factor, GBS antenna downtilt, UAV altitude and antenna beamwidth.

Efficient Online Quantum Generative Adversarial Learning Algorithms with Applications

The exploration of quantum algorithms that possess quantum advantages is a central topic in quantum computation and quantum information processing. One potential candidate in this area is quantum generative adversarial learning (QuGAL), which conceptually has exponential advantages over classical adversarial networks. However, the corresponding learning algorithm remains obscured. In this paper, we propose the first quantum generative adversarial learning algorithm-- the quantum multiplicative matrix weight algorithm (QMMW)-- which enables the efficient processing of fundamental tasks. The computational complexity of QMMW is polynomially proportional to the number of training rounds and logarithmically proportional to the input size. The core concept of the proposed algorithm combines QuGAL with online learning. We exploit the implementation of QuGAL with parameterized quantum circuits, and numerical experiments for the task of entanglement test for pure state are provided to support our claims.

Non-integrable stable approximation by Stein's method

We develop Stein's method for $α$-stable approximation with $α\in(0,1]$, continuing the recent line of research by Xu \cite{lihu} and Chen, Nourdin and Xu \cite{C-N-X} in the case $α\in(1,2).$ The main results include an intrinsic upper bound for the error of the approximation in a variant of Wasserstein distance that involves the characterizing differential operators for stable distributions, and an application to the generalized central limit theorem. Due to the lack of first moment for the approximating sequence in the latter result, we appeal to an additional truncation procedure and investigate fine regularity properties of the solution to Stein's equation.

Impact of the first order antiferromagnetic phase transition on the paramagnetic spin excitations and nematic phase of SrFe$_2$As$_2$

Understanding the nature of the electronic nematic phase in iron pnictide superconductors is important for elucidating its impact on high-temperature superconductivity. Here we use transport and inelastic neutron scattering to study spin excitations and in-plane resistivity anisotropy in uniaxial pressure detwinned BaFe$_2$As$_2$ and SrFe$_2$As$_2$, the parent compounds of iron pnictide superconductors. While BaFe$_2$As$_2$ exhibits weakly first order tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural and antiferromagnetic (AF) phase transitions below $T_s > T_N\approx 138$ K, SrFe$_2$As$_2$ has strongly coupled first order structural and AF transitions below $T_s= T_N\approx 210$ K. We find that the direct signatures of the nematic phase persist to lower temperatures above the phase transition in the case of SrFe$_2$As$_2$ compared to BaFe$_2$As$_2$. Our findings support the conclusion that the strongly first-order nature of the magnetic transition in SrFe$_2$As$_2$ weakens the nematic phase and resistivity anisotropy in the system.

CGNet: A Light-weight Context Guided Network for Semantic Segmentation

The demand of applying semantic segmentation model on mobile devices has been increasing rapidly. Current state-of-the-art networks have enormous amount of parameters hence unsuitable for mobile devices, while other small memory footprint models follow the spirit of classification network and ignore the inherent characteristic of semantic segmentation. To tackle this problem, we propose a novel Context Guided Network (CGNet), which is a light-weight and efficient network for semantic segmentation. We first propose the Context Guided (CG) block, which learns the joint feature of both local feature and surrounding context, and further improves the joint feature with the global context. Based on the CG block, we develop CGNet which captures contextual information in all stages of the network and is specially tailored for increasing segmentation accuracy. CGNet is also elaborately designed to reduce the number of parameters and save memory footprint. Under an equivalent number of parameters, the proposed CGNet significantly outperforms existing segmentation networks. Extensive experiments on Cityscapes and CamVid datasets verify the effectiveness of the proposed approach. Specifically, without any post-processing and multi-scale testing, the proposed CGNet achieves 64.8% mean IoU on Cityscapes with less than 0.5 M parameters. The source code for the complete system can be found at https://github.com/wutianyiRosun/CGNet.
